The Speedrun Manual of Miss Witch

Description

In her third year living in this steampunk world, Ciel gained the ability to simulate both the past and the future.

These simulations turned into a game where she could act without restraint, and after countless trials, real life became a replica she could navigate as though speedrunning it.

Churches, potions, mutations, the Old Gods, witches, sealed artifacts… none of these have anything to do with Ciel. She’s just an ordinary girl who wishes for a peaceful life.

She just happens to be particularly skilled at snuffing out danger before it even begins.

Idk how to write a structured review, so I'm just going to write what I think after reading the novel.

Honestly, this is amazing. I love how Ciel is not OP, and instead, always use the information advantage that she has to solve her problems/defeat her enemies. Whenever something new comes up to threaten her peaceful life, Ciel had to use her simulation power to first identify her enemies, gather intelligence of said enemies, compile informations, and come up with countermeasure. This process of unraveling thread of mysteries little by little... more>> is just so damn fun to read. There's also a healty amount of yuri later down the line, so it's a perfect novel if you're a yuri fan like me. I like Ciel's relationship with the FL, so precious. <<less

This is simply the best and most fun story (manga /anime / novel) I’ve ever experienced. I have read thousands of manga and 700+ novels and I genuinely haven’t enjoyed reading something this much, like EVER.

Right, first things first, the world building of this story is amazing. The story is set in around the Victorian times if I had to guess and it has a lot of fantasy additions, with cults, tons of churches and other supernatural agencies. The main power system in this world is potions which give the... more>> drinker powers based on the potion but also at the same time effect their personality and corruption rate; these potions can only be drunk by completing the corresponding rituals (the necromancies potion requires the drinker to stitch together body’s to create a sort of undead). These potions also have upgrades and these also come with new rituals (plague bearer needs the drinker to make a virus and kill a certain amount of people in a set time with said virus).

Next is the SYSTEM that so in a lot of stories now a days, this system is truly unique and DOESN’T make the MC op. The system allows the MC to spend fate points to go to the future, past or old days with a corresponding point increase depending on how long the time difference is. These time jumps are counted as simulations and no matter what the MC does in them, it doesn’t effect reality but it does allow the MC to get information about the future and rewards depending on what she does in the simulation from the system. If she survives the simulation without dying she can make a save file where that version of herself at the end of the simulation can be used in reality (main thing is that she can use as many potions as she like and can do rituals without affect the main timeline). Amazing differentiation from other systems.

The MC of the story is also extremely well written and I’m not a pro at writing reviews and opinions, so all I can say is that she is very likeable and is portrayed extremely well and even feels relatable (me if I wasn’t a scaredy cat!)

Lastly, the romance is nice! There isn’t any of that Waco drama bullsh*t like in other stories and the main couple get along really nicely.

All in all this is a really really good novel and I highly recommend it to everyone. <<less

YES! The old cover is back! Yipee!

  • Story Summary :
In this creative mix of steampunk and fantasy, the world is shown as a large simulation where every moment is like a "speedrun" in a carefully planned game. The story follows Ciel, who begins as an ordinary girl and then, in her third year in this alternate world, unexpectedly gains the unique ability to simulate both the past and the future. This power allows her to stop dangers before they occur, much like a speedrunner who makes every move count to finish... more>> a game quickly. I find it most appealing that instead of using common Victorian-steampunk-fantasy (gaslamp fantasy) ideas such as magical potions, ancient gods, witches, and mystical seals, the story turns expectations around by focusing on a main character whose only goal is to live a peaceful life amid all the chaos.

The way the world is built in this novel is truly notable. The author puts a great deal of effort into creating a setting that combines the old charm of a gear-driven, steampunk city with modern technology. Imagine large, mechanically enhanced cities where ancient gods, extraordinary individuals, and mysterious seals exist in a state of constant change. Every detail, from the busy, clattering streets to the hidden rules of time itself, adds more depth to the story that make the setting feel both wildly unpredictable and carefully organized. It is as if one steps into a world where each moment is a challenge to be managed, yet also a reminder of life's natural unpredictability.

Practically speaking, this story is about more than just high-concept abilities and fantastical environments. It's a meditation on human agency and the longing for peace in an unpredictable world. Ciel's power to simulate time isn't merely a cool plot device, it serves as a metaphor for our deep desire to control our destiny, to turn life's unexpected challenges into puzzles we can solve.

  • Personal Review:
What stands out most about this webnovel is that every character appears as a real, well-rounded person. The author examines each character's motivations, fears, weaknesses, and strengths in a way that feels both natural and carefully designed. With the ongoing simulation of the past and future, each detail about them unfolds gradually, keeping the story interesting and lively, as if a new aspect is revealed each time you read a chapter.

Ciel, the main character, is a clear example of this quality. It is impressive how her personality changes based on the paths she takes, with each decision quietly altering who she is. The twist that her simulation self is essentially her real self is not merely a clever narrative trick, it opens an interesting discussion of identity and how we define ourselves through our choices. It is quite similar to watching a player explore many different routes in a game, where every decision affects the outcome in unexpected ways.

What makes Ciel's power so interesting is its originality. The ability to simulate both the past and future is a fully developed mechanism that the author explains clearly and accurately. Everything connects smoothly, and there is little room for plot holes. Every character's actions consistently reflect who they are, which makes the entire story feel carefully organized and realistic, even among its fantastic elements.

The world building in this novel is another important feature. The setting isn't just there for a background, it actually plays an active role in shaping the story. From the complex networks of organizations to the ripple effects of events unfolding in each simulation, every element is connected with clear cause and effect. The idea that Ciel can simulate outcomes without changing reality creates a unique setting for exploring moral dilemmas. It is as if the world is arranged as a vast experiment where every action is examined for its possible impact, even if it does not alter the real state of things.

This arrangement leads to a particularly interesting aspect of the story, Ciel's morally ambiguous actions in her simulations. Because she knows that nothing she does in the simulations has real-life consequences, she often ends up playing the role of the villain. This is not because she is naturally evil, but because the line between right and wrong becomes unclear in a realm without usual consequences. It is a thought-provoking exploration of ethics, challenging the reader to consider whether our moral decisions are truly defined by their outcomes or by the simple act of choosing.

Overall, this webnovel is an excellent combination of creative world building, strong character development, and a familiar but fresh narrative structure. It makes us not only enjoy a well-made story but also to think about larger themes such as the nature of identity, the power of choice, and the complicated nature of morality in an unpredictable world.

PS. There's some shoujo-ai subplot happening. Btw, Ciel is only around 15-16 years old.

Also, there's an illustration of Ciel in her different character paths. Such as the [Avenger/Judge], [Temptor/Instigator] and [Pure Mode]. Just search for the raw title in google.

**A surprisingly solid read with a shift you may or may not like**

(Reviewed at ch.140+)

This novel starts off strong with a dark, intriguing premise. The MC, Ciel, gains the ability to simulate both the past and future, and uses it to quietly survive in a European-style world where the supernatural exists but stays hidden from the common folk. She’s not overpowered in a traditional sense—just incredibly methodical. It gives the early chapters a unique vibe: not flashy, but tense and unpredictable.

What really worked for me was the tone.... more>> There’s this persistent sense of isolation, like Ciel’s already died hundreds of times inside her own mind. Her actions feel cold, calculated—not out of malice, but survival. The atmosphere leans into mystery and supernatural horror, and the pacing respects your patience.

However, starting around chapter 138, the story takes a noticeable turn. Yuri elements are introduced. They don’t hijack the plot or kill the mystery, but they *do* change the emotional tone. Ciel starts relying on people more, and you get moments that lean toward warmth and affection. Not full “power of friendship” levels, but enough that the sharp grit of her earlier perseverance fades a bit under the fluff.

It’s not a drop in quality—it’s a shift in mood. If you’re here for the early cold and gritty vibe, just know it softens later on. Still worth reading, but your enjoyment of the later chapters might depend on how much you like that change. <<less

I really like the plot so far, I won't into detail for spoiler reasons, but I love the protagonist's personality, she's intelligent, pragmatic, and brings depth to the story.

I'd recommend you give it a shot, read a couple of chapters and decide whether or not it's your cup of tea.

Personally, I'm enjoying it quite a lot.

Holy shit, it's awsome. I've never seen a story that includes time jumping done as intresting, easy to understand, but at the same time detailed and well planed as in this novel.

It's not a genre I usually read, and even then, as soon as I started I couldn't stop reading for a moment. Translators also have done great job - making the story 100 times more enjoyable than with autotranslated chinese raws.

As for the plot itself, I won't tell you a thing. It's too good; you will have more fun... more>> exploring everything step by step by yourself. I can only guarantee that as soon as you read first few chapters, dropping it won't be an option. <<less

This story is inspired by Lord of the Mysteries, featuring a similar setting and power system. The protagonist is transmigrated into a seemingly ordinary world, but her life takes an unexpected turn when she suddenly gains a system with the ability to simulate both the past and future, albeit with certain limitations. After using the system to simulate the future, she gets killed at the hands of an unknown assailant. Now, she must unravel the mystery behind her death while protecting her loved ones.

This is a full-on action mystery novel... more>> where the protagonist navigates through the past and future to uncover vital clues. She's exceptionally intelligent, leveraging her tools to their fullest potential. The mysteries are intricately crafted, and simply uncovering them isn't enough to resolve the situation—she must figure out how to eliminate the threats while avoiding trouble.

If you're looking for a well-written story with intricate plotlines and a clever protagonist, this is the one to read. <<less

I read this a month or so ago and didn't read any further because it just isn't that amazing (writing this because I'm removing it from my reading list)

Way too fast paced, evil plots everywhere making me wonder how the city is still standing when the official churches / forces of good seem so incompetent

Not enough time in between evil plots to slow down and actually live in the world, the Yuri is completely irrelevant since there is no slice of life and no real relationship beyond "must protect... more>> weak MC" (who barely even qualifies as human, emotionally/socially speaking)

Would have liked to see more of MC's sister and the "regular peaceful life" but we only get very small snippets

Would say 3.5-3.7, I could agree with a 4 but I seriously wonder how this got so many 5 stars <<less

It's peak!!

I'll avoid repeating what everyone else has already said, but the different Beyonder paths and their ritual conditions were always my favorite part of LOTM, so a novel with an MC that dips into a bunch of them is super interesting to me, especially with how Ciel is completely willing to do horrifying things in her simulations to perfectly complete the ritual conditions.

It's everything I didn't know I wanted, and I'm super excited for more chapters.

Up there for my favourite novel I've read on this site, For me personally it surpasses Lord of the Mysteries at least in terms of entertainment value

The story's development had me hooked and the pacing was really satisfying, I never felt fatigued when reading even after reading most of it in one sitting. The world-building of LotM that it borrows is done justice and the MC's ability complements it so well. The mystery element is well done and you never feel like you are bloated with information.

Have you ever read one of those novels that you need to say "one more chapter and I go to sleep, " but when you actually finish the chapter it's so good that you need to keep reading? For me this is one of those novels

The story starts with our protagonist transmigrated from china to this new word that resembles a Victorian era Europe in the middle of Industrial Revolution into the body of Ciel, a girl that apparently killed herself due to the pressure of her harsh life

Although our... more>> protagonist (new) Ciel tries to find traces of magic or supernatural abilities in this new world, she soon discovers that there are only fakes and scams, and the world is perfectly normal... except it is not; it turn out the supernatural stuff was quite hidden.

The main cheat the protagonist have is her simulations that basically let her experience 24 hours of one random day form the future or the past, and after returning to reality she gains abilities or items or points depending on her actions

I think it's a great novel overall <<less

Really enjoy the story so far, It have the intricate power system, fantastic and memorable character with very real interaction between people. I cant really put this into word but when MC got such a unique power compare to others how do you write the story progression deeply interwoven with the power and keep things consistently on edge while still write well developed characters. TLDR the pieces just fall into place so damn well that I cant really show you what part is done best here. This novel also done... more>> a damn well job of depicting how hard it is to kill a massively stronger, more cunning and deeply rooted threat when you are so much more underpowered and have little to no backing.

But when it come to things that I love most about this novel is Ciel character development and interaction. She slowly stop fearing death, getting null from it and when she learn that in the simulation she is be able to getaway w nearly anything so her simulated self are so much more radical and is a nutjob meanwhile herself in the realworld try to be as safe as possible. This lead to her to have zero bottom line in the simulation, she'll even harm herself alot for the sake of people around her in the real world.

Spoiler

Like when in the simuation she have no probem calling god level being to descend and killing millions of innocent people while her real self try to distant from the cult as much as possible

[collapse]

Bonus for the very cute romance, Avena distress to Ciel state sometime when she was just getting better just to suddenly worsen and nearly dying after one night feel very real and add so much to the dynamic between characters <<less

It's a 9 out of 10. If you enjoyed LOTM, I would strongly urge you to read this novel.

The power system and the setting is very heavily LOTM inspired, but I would say that's it, really. Everything else is pretty novel. The situations the the MC finds themselves in one after the another, and how she chooses to deal with them are the best part of the novel. The MC is pragmatic, resourceful and realistic. The whole concept of this novel is about 'Simulating' the past and the future, and... more>> the MC makes really fun decisions on the basis of her being in a simulation. While in reality, she acts more cautiously.

As for what I did not like, there's a bit, but I don't think they bring down the novel down more than an 8.5 as it's more a matter of preference. You may not notice this in the beginning because it's really subtle, but this is a yuri novel. In the first 100+ chapters, it's more subtle, MC just had a natural chick magnet aura on her. Though, around the 100th chapter mark, I can't pinpoint it exactly, it starts to get a little raunchy every now and then. Personally, I thought it kinda ruined the flow and atmosphere of the novel. As I said, it's a matter of preference.

Aside from the raunchy stuff, I just did not find the supporting cast to be all the interesting. The antagonists felt like actual threats, so I have no problems with them. Slight tangent, but the antagonists, and the mysteries surrounding them are a huge plus to the story. They actually feel really scary and are able to create a lot of tension because you know exactly how bad things will get if they succeed. Anyways, it's just that the supporting cast, the characters that surround the MC, feel really insignificant, like NPCs. Yes, they are central to the plot, but they have no agency, because they never really do anything on their own. It's just feels like the MC's doing everything. Also, everyone that surrounds the MC is a woman. While I have no problem with this, it can be kinda dull.

I know I spent quite a bit of time writing about what I didn't enjoy regarding the novel, but I would still highly implore you to try it. I just have some very specific grievances with it. Seriously, it's a very fun read. <<less

It's a gem.

Pro's

-Interesting MC

... more>> -Interesting side characters

-Awesome handling of Time based power with proper restrictions and limits.

-Decent story

Cons

-MC turns into a mu*der hobo abit too quickly in the simulated times. I wish we had a tiny arc dedicated to her mentality changing in that regard.

-Too little screentime of friend\family time. Her sister is shoved into a corner too quickly. Granted the MC is on abit of a time limit so we'll sere if thjings quiet down.

All in all it's a story worth reading. It's unique, well written and the author handles established "story facts" well. <<less

It is quite an engaging and entertaining novel. I am hesitant to label it as masterpiece, because it has some flaws, mainly in convoluted world building and timelines. But it is good.

A bit like xianxia but not dao cultivation. Maybe this can be labeled as xuanhuan - mysterious genre. But the power system is like lovecraftian monster descendants.

The big drawback in timeloop story is that background/ side character would gradually lose importance. While it's inevitable, this story managed to do it elegantly by widening the scope of the setting.

The biggest... more>> advantage of this story: threat, tension.

At the latest chapter I read, it is still yuri single love interest, even though MC is surrounded by many girls. <<less

It's amazing 9.5/10

I really like the personality of the MC. She seems cold and calculating but is actually quite caring and funny. Especially her simulated self, lacking any restraints.

It has one of the more unique power systems I've ever seen so far. I'm not referring to her simulation system either but the world power system itself.

... more>> I really like side characters too. They're interesting enough for one to care about and they all have fun interactions with the MC.

Really love the small POV switches the story sprinkles about. Whether from the side characters or the mob characters.

Kinda reminds me a bit of the lord of mysteries actually.

Translations are really good as well.

Highly recommend <<less
