I'll have to give this a 3.8 for now. I have mixed feelings about this one. It's not a bad read. The world building is interesting but it sometimes feel a bit lacking. The reader is thrown into a difficult situation right off the bat. The MC, Song Shi, just found herself transmigrated into a different world and is forced to either awaken or die. She doesn't end up awakening but doesn't end up dying either because the person in front of her awakened so the experiment was stopped. Plus,... more>> it looks like her actions caught the eye of the top researcher so they spared her. During all this, a system pops up and starts showing her percentages and data on herself, leading her to believe she is able to awaken two superpowers (healing and berserker) which no one has ever done before. She also doesn't have any memories of the pervious self but learns that her mother hates her so much because her biological father so she's thrown out of the house and left to fend for herself. Her mother is a healer but was hurt so she's unable to use her powers anymore and the MC doesn't know who her father is besides the fact that he's probably a berserker too. What I don't understand is that the MC doesn't know that much self defense or attacking skills. Also, the author doesn't tell us anything about her life before transmigration so we basically have zero info on her. The only reason given to us on how she survived the experiment (being locked in a cage with a beast) is just the fact that she's probably faster due to her berserker gene. It feels like the author focuses a lot on the action and things happening, but there's not a lot of build-up or explanation as to how we got to that point or why and sometimes, it doesn't make sense logically.

Spoiler

For example, she was told not to expose herself as a duel-power user and then she's set up and is "forced" to fight back (but not really because honestly, she could have walked away and control herself. After all, the story was telling us on how great her mental control is but then suddenly she got so angry she couldn't help herself??)

Another example is when the school is going to evacuate secretly due to the beast tide and leave the helpless humans behind but one of her teammates exposed it to the students and like 90% of the students vote to stay? Like, most of the freshmen who just got to the school all suddenly feel like they have to fight against this near-impossible level 8 beast tide and do it bravely?? I mean, this is a world where everyone discriminate against berserker genes and you can be forced to either die or awaken and yet, they have so much patriotism in them these 18 year olds are willing to fight against beasts that they have little to none experience with?

[collapse]

So it kinda feels like the author picks and chooses what ideas they like the best out of the genre and sticks them all here. The MC is pretty emotionless and even though she's strong, it doesn't feel like you can connect with her well because the author doesn't really invest in her background. Like, why is she wanting to be so strong? Why is she working so hard? What is her motivation? Sure she has a system and wants to improve it, but we don't know why she wants to. She isn't the real Song Shi that was previously bullied and can give us a reason. We don't know a lot about her before she transmigrated. There's nothing we can really connect to the MC with. Overall, I think the story is just ok but execution can be better. If you like genres like this and are bored then it's not a bad read so far. I also haven't gotten to the romance yet (if there is any) but maybe I'll read until I get there. <<less

Atmosphere is more serious and brutal that in average Jinjiang novel, it reminds me of Korean web novels, but not as dark. There is almost no humor.

MC is thrown into the world and is mostly reactionary — instead of moving the plot, the plot moves her. There is a huge difference between social classes and obviously she is in the lowest one, where everyone steps on her. She fights back in a manner of "hurting enemy by 800 and oneself by 1000". I'm not sure if she is so relentless... more>> because of her character or her genes (in this world genes affect psychology: berserkers are cheeky and aggressive, healers are gentle and so on). Because of her gradually awakening healing powers she gets beaten up during the day while improving her fighting skills and heals up during the night, rinse and repeat.

After several chapters her powers are woken up and and her situation improves. She gets enrolled into an elite class with other "awakeners", and gradually gets recognition without too much face-slapping. The school and subsequent university she's in are basically military academies, so most of the time students are training and fighting.

Author keeps it very down to earth — there are no breathtaking beauties, all mighty CEOs, mysterious schoolboys from underground organizations, etc. I am very prone to feeling cringe, but not here. There is absolute zero romance, no idealistic teenagers, no emotional confrontations (only physical ones). Actually I don't remember characters talking about their feeling or getting at all emotional.

World building is average, basically there are 11 human cities, with are about 10 million people each, in the "Federation", that are surrounded by monster territory. How large is this "Federation" is unknown, other countries are not mentioned, maybe it covers the entire world, but everyone speaks the same language.

The "system" plays very minor part, and is mostly used to explain MCs specialness and to illustrate how her skills upgrades numerically. It does not talk, has no shop, does not provide weird quests. Basically just a character panel, but number upgrades are not mentioned in every other sentence like in some Japanese web novels.

After MC gets very powerful author introduces the main villain, which somewhat collides with the general down-to-earth feel of the novel with no almighty individuals. Maybe author couldn't think of anything else to move the plot forward, because as I mentioned above the MC, while is not passive per se, is reactionary. I don't think author has the whole plan and just writes by plot arcs.

So. As a web novel I think it's somewhat solid, but without potential of being a book.

Edit: I forgot to mention that all characters (including MC) are genderless. You can swap pronouns any way around and won't feel any difference. I'm not sure if it's deliberate or because of author's lack of skill. I feel like everyone is a dude. <<less

Honestly such a solid book with potential, MC was quite captivating despite being slightly mary sue. Setting itself is darker and more gory than I preferred but its decent

what turns me off is the lack of social connection, everything is filled with distrust hate betrayal and negative filling to the point I don't quite enjoy it as much. Wish there was some companionship or partnership, some that is available doesn’t really count because at the end Song Shi doesn’t really trust anyone with her fate, her motive is also slightly... more>> questionable. Yes you want yo survive but was that all? I think there is a point where if you just want yo survive it would stop at a certain point of the plot and you could just end it without it being overly too much. <<less
