Baek Yigang is a son of the Baek Clan, one of the seven great clans of Zhongyuan. Afflicted with the Taiyin Qi Blockage, he is cursed with a shortened lifespan and the inability to collect internal energy. He had been peacefully spending the rest of his days indoors when he was ambushed by a group of masked people. During the ambush, he lost his servant who was like a sister to him. Chased by the attackers, Baek Yigang escaped through a secret underground path. When he came across a blocked path, he decided he’d at least die fighting and picked up a rusted sword that was stuck in the ground…

It’s not often that a story about a terminally ill protagonist in a martial arts world manages to be so engaging, but The Terminally Ill Young Master of the Baek Clan pulls it off with style. The story starts with our main character, Baek Yi-gang, who is a reincarnator born into a powerful martial arts clan but with a twist – he has a terminal illness that prevents him from practicing martial arts and is destined to die before he turns twenty. Right from the get-go, you feel for this... more>> kid who's already lived one tragic life only to be dealt another bad hand. The plot kicks off when assassins attack his secluded manor, forcing him to confront his own weakness and mortality head-on. This initial incident is paced really well, creating a sense of urgency and setting the stage for Yi-gang's journey. What follows is a clever mix of martial arts action, clan politics, and a touch of the supernatural that keeps you turning the pages.

The characters are where this novel truly shines. Yi-gang is a fantastic protagonist. He's not your typical overpowered hero from the start. Instead, he's intelligent, witty, and has to rely on his smarts and the memories of his past life to navigate the dangerous world he's in. His internal struggles with his frail body and his determination to live are very compelling. The introduction of the Immortal Divine Sword, a ghost ancestor who can only communicate with Yi-gang, adds a great dynamic. Their banter is often hilarious and provides a lot of the novel's charm, but it also serves as the catalyst for Yi-gang's growth. The supporting cast, like his stoic younger brother Baek Ha-jun and the various young masters and misses from other clans, are also well-developed. The relationships, especially the complex brotherhood between Yi-gang and Ha-jun, are explored with a nice depth that adds emotional weight to the story.

The writing style is smooth and easy to get into. The author does a great job of blending action sequences with moments of character reflection and world-building. The pacing is generally excellent, with a good balance of fast-paced fights and slower, more plot-driven chapters. There are plenty of mysteries to keep you guessing, from the identity of the assassins to the secrets of the Baek clan's techniques. While it uses some common tropes of the genre, like a reincarnated protagonist and a hidden power system, it executes them in a fresh and entertaining way. It doesn’t get bogged down in overly complicated cultivation jargon, which makes it accessible even if you're not a hardcore fan of the genre. The story manages to be both fun and emotionally resonant, and for those reasons, I found it to be a truly memorable experience. <<less

I already read the manhwa first, but seems like the manhwa is just starting,

went to check the novel,

Oh well, I wish I could understand chinese, korean and japanese language,

so I could just read all their novels hahaha

My bad looks like I'm stuck with machine translations

The novel is okay, it's much better than other Gary Stu novels.
