I woke up as Monica, the villainess living a reckless life in a novel I had given up writing.

If things go according to the original work, death awaits me.

To avoid this fate, I must desperately prevent a divorce from my husband.

“No, no divorce, please.”

“That’s quite the joke.”

Even though there seemed to be no hope in this deadlock, I didn’t give up. I tried to change the basic settings to get back to my original world, and then ‘change’ began to happen……

* * *

My husband, who had been demanding a divorce, starts covertly courting me while also lending a helping hand.

“How should I respond to your flirting?”

“You should fall for it.”

“Why are you reading to me?”

“…To make you fall for me.”

“Liam, why do you keep saying stuff like that? What will you really do if I fall for it?”

“Isn’t it obvious? I’ll take responsibility for you for the rest of my life.”

Liam spoke as if he couldn’t bear to let me leave this place, meet another man, confess love, and start a family.

“I’ll make sure you don’t regret it. I love you.”

This summary is terribly inaccurate. It SHOULD say: After discovering that his debauched wife, Monica, has been replaced by the author of this world, here to shake the very foundations that it is built upon, her husband begins to change. (Courtship begins.)

This is NOT a "regretful male lead tries to win his wife back" story. This is a "save the world" story.

Three main things happen at once.

Spoiler

We find out very early that our transmigrator MC is desperate to prevent the divorce between Monica and Liam because she keeps "hearing" the line from her story in her mind that Monica dies shortly after the divorce is finalized. She realizes that if she wants to get home, she first has to live.

Liam (husband) arrives first at the marital counseling session that Monica set up to delay the divorce. The counselor gets Liam thinking and he realizes that he doesn't actually know anything about Monica. What she likes, dislikes, her favorite things, what drives her. He fell for her beauty and that was it. It shakes him to realize that he's also at fault for the relationship failing.

Then, SUDDENLY!

Spoiler

Monica is delayed arriving at the marital counseling session because she has a brush with death in a 10-carriage pileup. She isn't hurt, but she's shaken to the core, which gives the spirit that brought her here a chance to put her to sleep and have a nice, long, one-on-one talk about what's going on.

This is Evanso's final attempt to bring Sujeong to this world in order to save it. They tried twice before and accidentally grabbed other souls, who weren't able to make a change and ultimately died, forcing Evanso to rewind the world and try again. Evanso's now out of energy and tells Monica she has one chance to give this story an end: happily ever after or the destruction of the world. It's all up to her.

Like any NORMAL transmigrator, Monica keeps arguing that if she can go back to her original world, she can just write a new ending. Evanso shoots down that idea by pointing out that Sujeong's growing hatred and resentment towards the men in her life that ruined her, inspiring her to write this story in the first place, has breathed life into this world that is now a separate entity from her writing entirely. Thus, the only place to change things for this world is from within the world itself.

Evanso also gives her a heads-up that this world has two kinds of people in it: protectors, who want to keep the original story going, and rejectors, who are trying to change the story. If she wants to save this world and give it a happy ending, she'll have to find and work with the rejectors to change things, but the protectors will stand in her way and be a regular threat to her life. In parting, they also promise Monica a special ability, given with the last of their power.

(Evanso also says that if she can end the story successfully, she might be able to go home to her own world.)

Liam arrives, shaken by Monica's near-death experience and his own changing viewpoint, and takes her home. This is when the third set of events unfolds.

Spoiler

Monica starts taking notes about what Evanso told her in her notebook, in Hangul (Korean script). Shortly afterwards, when she goes to talk with Liam, she notices something odd on the skin barely visible under his shirt and thus begins the first of many attempts to get him to strip so she can see it properly and confirm that he's got writing in Hangul on his body. Of course he resists. He's weirded out by the weird crap appearing on his body and even has already had people from the temple come to confirm he isn't cursed. The last thing he's going to do is let his crazy harridan wife undress him to oogle it, too!!

Eventually, he does relent, and she's floored to see the writing, which she realizes is the same as what she wrote in her notebook. She grabs her notebook to show him that it's what she wrote and that she CAN read the strange characters.

After then gathering her courage, she tells him everything. About her, the world, and what she needs to do. It does take him some soul-searching and a trip to the temple before he fully accepts her words (in the meantime, she discovers how to erase the writing from his body, so he ends up at the temple with the writing removed).

(Evanso's promised special ability allows Monica to effectively turn Liam into a whiteboard as long as she writes in Hangul script. Anything she writes in Korean ends up tattooed on Liam's body somewhere.)

Liam also realizes at this point that the "Monica" who has been shaking his resolve about the divorce is actually Sujeong. Ever since the marital counselor pointed out that true couples know each other well, he realizes that Sujeong is the one he wants to know more about, get closer to. He agrees with her that the divorce is off, to save her life, but points out that they'll need to put on a show of gradual reconciliation in order to convince everyone else. He uses this as an excuse to start seducing her.
