I do not understand why is this so highly rated. This novel attempts multiple things yet it succeeds at none of them.

The descriptions are surface level no scene or person is truly given time to develop. They're given a mostly irrelevant one-liner and the story moves on assuming you to fill the rest of the gaps.

It also suffers from the fact that the prologue/ chapter 0 already starts in the middle of the plot so the first tens of chapters are just rushing through random events that led him to... more>> continuously get promoted, except it doesn't actually tell you why he became a civil servant at the start.

MC comes pre packaged with baggage you are just assumed to understand, the girl is a 'tyrant' in the original work, Apparently that is all you need to know to stake your life and do anything to get away from that situation. What part of her makes her a tyrant? Why does he actively avoid the princess? Because shes the future tyrant of course, that book from my last life said it, so dont question more. Its like an incredibly shallow worldview.

Instead of using the opportunity to make it show that the MC is skilled but intentionally trying so hard to fail at his job that he succeeds instead, he just gets deus ex machina levels of luck to 'fail upwards'. Hes not trying to do good despite being in a bad situation. He's trying to do bad and just by sheer luck he does good. He supports an orphanage because he has an ulterior motive to get closer to the 'protagonist' of the story. He doesnt side with a good person thats a reformist because he 'knows' the reformist will succeed but die in the process.

This is not a person with ideals or rather anything, its some random witless coward doing what he thinks in his shallow mind is the path to living. Except even that part isnt written properly. When this future tyrant insists on being his assistant he doesnt see that as an opportunity to change the future but instead as a death flag. Not that any of this is explained properly because its like the book leaves more than half of the 'content' out.

Just skip this. Its not worth reading. A 5 out of 10 at best, aggressively mediocre with an empty feeling. <<less

Surprisingly well written and fun. The novel really hit the balance for troupes of misunderstanding: grounded logic, absurd development, irony, and how the misunderstanding of others rings somewhat true. I especially like how there is this undertone of true worth, of something going for the MC even without all his luck: complete confidence he will land on his feet after he loses his job and thrive, wherever he might be; his decision to buy all the sandwiches just because it's good, and that the seller works for a charity... It's... more>> a lot of show don't tell, keeping down even the part where others praise the MC for his supposed good deed.

Basically, MC (civil worker) trying to get demoted and escape the kingdom cause he know the future so he try to show how poor his performance is unfortunately he got SSS rank luck (?) so everything he done only make him looks like competent worker. Quite interesting 1 pov (yup, just MC pov), I can't give it 5 star yet cause most of kn got great start and then a bit disappointed at the ending, but I definitely recommend this if you like good misunderstanding

Never wrote a review but so far this novel was too enjoyable for me not to recommend it.

Even though the MC knows he reincarnated into a novel, it's not the overused concept of knowing future events and taking advantage of them. He just knows if he continues to be a government official, a rebellion in the future will probably kill him.

Thus he tries to mess up or perform badly to get fired, but luck means he succeeds every time. That's the main recurring plot.

Don't take the novel too seriously and... more>> you'll have good a time. Each chapter is like it's own self contained episode and I find myself giggling every time <<less

"Being simple and straightforward, it's not a work of art that will change your life, nor does it try to be. It's simply a fun story about a man with such absurd luck that it's almost comical. Every time I read a new chapter, I find myself with a smile on my face, and for me, that's more than enough to recommend this work to others. In conclusion, in my opinion, the following comment perfectly captures the vibe of the story:"

Cap 16 by Rin

" Tries to fail- becomes a hero

Tries... more>> to succeed- makes a religion and becomes god " <<less

It's a fun comedy series, with a lot of luck and humor on the MC. It's not supposed to be serious and becomes a fun read going through the antics of MC succeeding through failure.

I have been looking for a new novel for a long time to read and am glad I came across this one. A man who constantly fails upwards when all he wants to do is fail has been more entertaining than I thought it would. The man probably got reincarnated by the god of luck or something as no matter what he tries he always succeeds. Don't let it fool you that it is his only quality though as he also works hard to make people's lives better. Quite entertaining... more>> and looking forward to more chapters. <<less

I haven't read something this fun for a while now, this was a really great find. Usually when it comes to this type of Korean comedy novels it can get way too exaggerated or over the top. And that's actually no different in this novel, except it actually fully embraces how absurd the plot can get. You can find the MC working as a construct worker, spending time in the prison, spending a vacation in a tribal village, the plot can get really unpredictable in where it goes and I... more>> love that. The plot never takes itself seriously, but the crucial thing is that the MC does take his situation very seriously since it's a life or death matter for him. It forms a delicate balance between being just serious enough for you to care about what's happening but also silly enough to be an enjoyable ride.

One thing I'm very pleasantly surprised about is how the main heroine of the story is not over-the-top like how the main heroine in other novels in the genre treat their protagonists. I was fully expecting this to be another cringe fest where the heroines have no personalities but yandere who have some inexplicable affection for the MC, and so far we haven't had that yet. The main heroine tries her best to act like a normal person because people aren't supposed to know her real identity and that is such a refreshing dynamic to me who usually hates this archetype. She doesn't have a lot of screen time as well, losing to even a few other side characters in the novel because it focuses more on how the MC fails upwards in society.

So far the vibe of the novel is very much a slice of life setting and I love that, the pacing is reasonably fast but also doesn't rush, there's just a lot of events happening in a short amount of chapters which I just really like. All in all a great novel if you're into this sort of thing, if you're the type to take medieval fantasy novels too seriously you might feel like it's insulting your time but if you're just here to waste your time because you're bored then this novel is more than good enough for a day's worth of entertainment. Looking forward to reading the novel regularly from now on. <<less

The first few chapters are rough, it's written in like a much prolonged prologue. The translator seems to put genuine effort though, going out of the way to explain slang and references. The chapters have more depth and details later on, it seems like a normal story instead of short memoirs or synopsis once most of the major characters are introduced.

Comedy is the primary focus, so I wouldn't take this novel seriously. Just treat it as a light-hearted wish-fullfilment story.

Is this supposed to be funny? I haven't laughed, giggled, chuckled, or even smirked while reading this. This story isn't even funny unintentionally. Not a single situation in the first five chapters hint at comedy. The author expects readers to laugh at the absurdity of Ascal succeeding when he wants to fail, but the setup and punchline doesn't work with zero exaggeration. Ascal reacts to every situation with mild anxiety rather than an overblown meltdown. He continues to do his job, and his only plan is to go to his... more>> job with only a minor amount of tardiness. Even his co-workers are better examples of comedy by bringing pillows to sleep at their jobs, which would fit in a situational comedy sketch from The Office.

Without humor, this novel has very little to offer in terms of plot or character development. The translation is done well. Unfortunately, the story is not worth the effort. <<less

It's fun and well written enough.

Misunderstanding trope at work. Trying to fail and unintentionally succeeding, side characters having a misconception on the Mc's actions, and etc etc.

My only pet peeve is the lack of MC, Ascal's background. We know he's trying to get fired, but we have no knowledge of his personality beyond trying to get fired. It is fine and all considering the target of the story though.

Nonetheless would have liked information on the primary guy we're reading about.

Ngl first review, never done it before so Ima be quick

This story is rather good, at first glance the plot seems to be headed in a very generic direction. Pretty much some dude gotta escape from this yandare empress. So when I read the first 10 chapters I was decently surprised with how it actually turned out.

The story is light hearted with elements of romance and slice of life. Everyday we have are MC try to get fired but successfully fails and ends up getting promoted/awarded for his efforts which... more>> in many chapters is rather hilarious as it’s the punchline towards the story.

Spoiler

one really good example is when the MC travels to this village in order to succeed in helping what seems like a hopeless village from starvation, this isn’t out of good faith but instead a plot as he thinks this will actually result in a failure and end up getting fired but instead he ends up becoming a religious deity

[collapse]

Most chapters are self contained as in they detail one day out of the character so theirs no story plots (as far as ch 30) that last longer then 5 chapters nonetheless their are still events that are recounted or directly affect further chapters which to me is very refreshing as I don’t feel the drag that comes with having long storylines.

The characters are also very memorable with each having its unique trait personally that makes most of them rather likable. My favorite has to be the prince the way he acts is just too good.

Any how if your looking for a good read and nothing too serious give it a try as I certain you will like it. <<less

Hats off to the author for writing and the translators for translating this. Quite the rollercoaster story as most of the time the things that happen are happening on their own while the MC is just trying to live his life as peacefully as possible ... more>>
Spoiler

Which in turn leads him to do everything he can to get fired from his job as a civil servant of the Empire.

[collapse]
which just leads to more misunderstandings.

The story is just a slice of life with comedic effects and an undertone of seriousness mixed in due to its medieval settings
Spoiler

as even his home-cooked confectionery is more delectable than those baked by top patissier

[collapse]
so it might not be a good one for those who want action and adventure of a powerful MC who curbstomps anyone and everyone that come his way as this MC Ascal himself has no real martial or magical power for any kind of conflicts.

You can think of this story as
Spoiler

one whose protagonist himself understands the absurdity caused by his actions and is just trying to somehow untangle himself from the main plot and live a normal life away from the soon-to-be-war-ridden-according-to-the-original-plot-Empire

so read it for fun and if you don't like it then you should just find something to suit your taste. <<less

Don't take the title seriously, it has nothing to do with the novel, at least as of chapter 20.

The novel is mainly a comedy, and it is decent at it and the characters are pretty likable (including Mc).

But...

... more>> It is EXTREMELY REPETITIVE. Like holy shit. Every single chapter is basically a new situation where MC wants to worsen his reputation and somehow it ALWAYS has the best possible outcome for him.

EVERY SINGLE CHAPTER, I'm not exaggerating, it is literally every single chapter. It is funny every once in a while, but not when you have done it for 20 chapters in a row, possibly more.

It not only makes the plot very predictable, it also makes it boring.

Barely has anything important happen at all. I saw that this is a short novel with less then 110 chapters, so I assumed that the pacing would be pretty quick, but it is the contrary, it is slow asf <<less

MC wants to leave.

Everyone: I must have you

It's a comedy-focused novel. Don't expect much from the tyrant and obsession on the title. Maybe the author will explore that later, but 30 chapters in and it is just MC having incredible luck/bad luck at his career.

It's an office comedy in a fantasy world. It's good, I just wish the author pushed along the tyrant/plot.

The title should be "I'm trying to get fired, but I keep getting promoted".

Overall kind of an enjoyable light read that didn't overstay its welcome, but it does get significantly worse in the last third or so of the novel.

While not exactly a masterpiece, the story until that point felt more or less coherent and decently well put together. However, it seems like the second half was a bit rushed, causing it to feel incoherent at times. For example, the protagonist would bring an important item back from a trip but him acquairing that item was never shown. Additionally,

Spoiler

near the end of the story the protagonist was trapped in a gem by his girlfriend at the very end of a chapter because he tried to run away from his duties (the main recurring gag of the series), but in the very next chapter he is perfectly fine and the event is never referenced again.

[collapse]

There are quite a few examples of this and it just pulled me out of the story because I wasn't sure if I had skipped something important or if the author was just sloppy with his writing.

In general that last third felt less interesting than what came before as the novelty wore off and the author refused to properly explore the relationship between the protagonist and the main heroine, relegating it to mostly gags and very occasional romantic scenes (such as a kiss). I think that in the whole story they had a grand total of one date (and even then I am not sure whether or not it should be considered as such).

Spoiler

They also randomly decided to introduce full-on time travel at the very end which just left me scratching my head as the author used it to erase the one serious story development the story had to offer: the second princess' death

[collapse]

In conclusion, while I did enjoy my time with the novel, it is nothing to write home about and I was left sad that the writing left a lot to be desired. If you do decide to read this, you should definitely manage your expectations. <<less

Sometimes I question whether half this site's users have ever read an actual book.

Are they even engaging with these webnovels as stories, or just mindlessly absorbing words like some kind of literary IV drip?

The author throws around random nouns like confetti, and readers somehow mistake it for "world-building." The characters are cardboard cutouts—completely lifeless and uninteresting. Like so many poorly written (or poorly translated) webnovels, it's often impossible to tell who's even speaking, thanks to painfully generic dialogue.

... more>> Other reviewers talk about this too like it's funny. It's not.

Just plain bad overall, imo. <<less

So this is the first novel I finished. I have been reading novels for a long time now but I don't like endings so I just don't finish my reads leave them in half in hopes of continuing them someday; but this was different when I started this I didn't know it had ended at only hundred chapters had I known I wouldn't have started this but having finished it I feel satisfied. I recommend this to everbody reading this, you should add this to your memory of novels read... more>> this is worth the time.

Thanks for reading

Translation is good, and I MTL'ed the rest (very readable).

As someone that read it all, unlike the rest here, I think I can give a more complete opinion.

The plot worked great, I had a lot of fun. My only problem is the ending itself because it was sooo abrupt.

... more>> The side story helped with that issue 100% though. Supposedly it should continue at some point but at the very least I wasn't left with a cliffhanger until/if it continues.

The characters are very lively. It sure helps to make the story enganging and fun all the way.

I read some talked about it going in a poly direction as a bad thing. It has nothing to do with the quality of the writing or the story itself, it's not the base of the story in the first place either.

This isn't a shounen harem where the girls are brainless and the MC is s*upid and dense like a black hole, that's just your bias talking.

It's literally only on the side story that's ONE chapter. You can just ignore it altogether and be left with that pretty open ending if that makes you happier, people.

In my case I found it pretty funny because of all the bickering and the fact that it's not even clear who's who when the kids appear.

Also, MC's reaction is gold in terms of chill, which is partly what drives the story for me because I find it really funny thanks to how it was written. <<less

Well they had us the first half, not gonna lie.

That is pretty accurate here. Series implies its going to be slice of life with something in the end. Yandere tag always has something to work with. There was not.

When the halfway point rolls around and the main plot is barely mentioned, ok, the slow burn. When we hit the timeline jumping junk so all characters can be at the point for the next scene rather than developing there...? A bit weird but fine, just a bit generic, just a bit... more>> tr*sh.

The epilogue just ripping off the entirety of My Daughters are Regressors as the punchline for a joke that wasn't even funny, kinda ended up making maybe the one thing they could have salvaged a scrap of mediocrity possible. It did not.

Not worth the read at all <<less
