The Villainous Junior Brother Was Actually Secretly in Love with Me

Meng Chen had a gentle nature, but in his past life, he hated Xue Lang with a passion.

This newly admitted junior disciple was vicious and perverse, and for some unknown reason, always saw him as a thorn in his side, using various schemes and tricks to harm him.

But it wasn’t until he had endured all the humiliation, at the moment of his death, that he realized how terrifying the sect he trusted and relied on truly was — his senior and junior disciples had always been morbidly obsessed with him, and even the master who had raised him only did so to kill him with his own hands, to prove the Ruthless Way. All of Xue Lang’s actions were actually intended to force him to leave this abyss earlier.

Alive once more, Meng Chen had only two thoughts:

First— Revenge.

Second— Be kind to Xue Lang.

——

Xue Lang didn’t mind being a villain.

As long as he could let that person live freely, he was willing to do anything, even if it meant being hated to the bone.

Starting over after failure, he steeled himself and decided not to be soft-hearted this time, determined to play the role of an even more evil and vicious junior disciple.

…But something seemed off.

Xue Lang: “Surnamed Meng, don’t think I’ll be grateful just because you helped me!!”

Meng Chen calmly responded with a hum and brought a sweet date to his lips. “Just picked. Want to try?”

Xue Lang: “You useless tr*sh! If it weren’t for your meddling, I would have killed this demon beast long ago!”

Meng Chen’s brows furrowed deeply, his fair and slender fingers carefully touching the small wound on his face, softly coaxing, “It’s all my fault. Does it hurt?”

Xue Lang: … (covering his nosebleed)

No… what’s going on!?

I enjoyed everything up until Xue Lang (ML) , it’s a spoiler so

Spoiler

Xue Lang sacrificed himself so that a tribulation crossing dead soul would take over his body and fulfil his wish of protecting Meng Chen from his master (who wanted to erase his memories so that MC could go back to caring for him, selfish a**hole, I got high blood pressure from his shitty master there) and then that old monster takes over ML’s body.

I loved the angst personally, I cried like three times just cuz I felt emotional at like 4am but anyways.

I kinda disliked that whole amnesia trope thing but I understood it, but I can’t help but dislike it anyways.

[collapse]

I loved Xue Lang more than Meng Chen (MC), he was just so adorable and sweet, but I disliked him near the end because yeah.

Pei Yuze, Yin Chi and MC’s master can all go die and suffer a thousand hells. <<less

I really liked this novel up to where I read it. The reason I'm dropping it now is spoiler related so tap at your own discretion ig.

So. Xue lang dies. But not only that his soul scatters. If you're reading this review before reading the novel, Xue Lang is the ML or the villainous junior brother. He's amazing and lovely, the relationship between the ML and MC is so sweet. Which is why I'm extremely disappointed he dies. He supposedly is ALSO the demon venerable but I'm not buying it. EVEN IF IT TURNS OUT TO BE TRUE, I simply cannot reconcile the fact that they are the same person. I HATE amnesia plots for the same reason, they're never the same after regaining their memories, they're a combination of the new and the old. I hate it and I know this is going to be case, because that's where the plot is headed. I wish Meng Chen just cultivated to a point where he could go and travel to the world Xue Lang was originally from and live happily together after THERE. Idk there's also the fundamental differences between Xue Lang and the demon venerable. Like there is this point in the story where Meng Cheng leaves the demon castle, and it comes up that the demon venerable wasn't going to lock him up and strip him of his cultivation and leave him disabled, NOT BECAUSE HE'S OPPOSED TO IT but because he thinks those methods are beneath him. Which is really f*cked because Xue Lang WOULD NEVER. The reason he wouldn't do it/even think about it is because he respects and loves Mu Cheng so much. Another fundamental difference is that Xue Lang WANTS Mu Cheng to be free. He encourages Mu Cheng to go out and make friends while the demon venerable keeps him isolated (but this could also be because Mu Cheng is depressed after witnessing Xue lang die and as a result isolates himself.) but I believe that even if Mu Cheng wasn't depressed, he would not have

ANOTHER mega big point. The power dynamics are totally different after Xue Lang dies. The demon venerable is the strongest cultivator in the realm now so IF Mu Cheng wanted to leave he physically wouldn't be able to. Which is scary considering everything he has been through (g*ooming, imprisonment, possible r*pe, mental torture, physical torture, severing cultivation, being rendered disabled and death)

The reason why Xue Lang was such a breath of fresh air was because of the respect he holds for Mu Cheng and the demon venerable doesn't have any if just superficial ones.

Frankly I don't know if this changes after he gets his memories back since I stopped reading right before he does but I'd like to hear your thoughts about this. After you've read the novel as well.

[collapse]

The first 3/4 of the novel are amazing so you should definitely read for those, but if you're not into amnesia plots then maybe this isn't for you. <<less

Sweet, and enjoyable read. The villain/s are despicable and my heart ached for the MC so much, but the amount of healing I got whenever the MC and ML were together 😭🤍

It's at a perfect length, but I still found myself wishing I could read more of them together and have fluff (and maybe some smut) after all they had to go through.

First review! This is only based off the current (3) translated chapters and so far the novel seems very promising! The translation is AMAZING, very top-notched and well-done. The translation and the route the story is taking right now is making me anticipate great things and will be rating it 5/5 to boost the ratings a bit more.

The story is following the synopsis quite literally and I already love both the MC and ML, though I can't determine who is gong and shou just yet (honestly, I am fine with... more>> either or). Xue Lang is adorable in and of himself; he's such a tsundere and I love how Meng Chen just goes along with what he says and causes Xue Lang to go speechless because he's punching cotton interacting with Meng Chen!

Not much is known of the past in regards to who the real perpetrators are, but we can tell from the beginning and the synopsis that the MC (Meng Chen) was greatly wronged and the only one willing to push him away from the danger was Xue Lang all along. This dynamic of repaying him in this second life and treating Xue Lang well is adorable (and a bit pitiful) when you recall the title and apply it to both lives.

It's very promising so far and I'm in love. I look forward to the oncoming chapters and thank the translator for their hard work! Will update this review when the time comes. <<less

This is so underrated!!! I don't come across shixiong x shidi novels that often, so I don't actually have anything to compare to, but I think this is a REALLY good read, with just under 70 chapters so it's also a quick read.

As the summary described it, MC was betrayed by his peak master and disciples (well, to be more accurate, one of them is his shixiong and the other his shidi–not the ML) who all had wicked intentions towards him. After he died miserably in his first life, he... more>> was reborn and swore to get revenge for himself in the second life.

Before the end of his first life, MC had also realized that the shidi–the ML this time–who had always been at odds with him had been the only person in the peak who had sincerely cared about him and had secretly been trying to save him all this time. The ML's 'villainous' behavior is all because he hopes that it will drive the MC away from the peak/sect and away from the clutches of the actual villains of the story.

The main point of the novel is to highlight the little wolf-dog ML's pure, selfless love for MC

Spoiler

Protecting him without expecting anything in return, SACRIFICING his soul just so MC could be free, wanting him to go out and experience the world and meet new people, if it meant MC would be happy, etc.

[collapse]

against the twisted and perverse 'love' of MC's other... suitors:

Spoiler

Imprisoning him against his wishes, not allowing him to get close or even show concern for anyone, crippling him, controlling him, and attempting to alter his memories so he couldn't leave their side, making the MC unalive himself out of sheer despair... etc.

[collapse]

This is a very satisfying revenge plot and the twist about the ML was that

Spoiler

he fell in love with the character Meng Chen from a novel, and still loved him when he transmigrated into that very novel, which is why he tried so hard to prevent the original plot from happening. As for the big sacrifice mentioned, if you've read the other reviews and don't want to read that part, you can stop at ch.50, as I feel like that's a hopeful, ambiguous ending to stop at. But I still highly recommend finishing the whole book as there a couple more twists at the end about the ML and MC's shared past~ and they do get their happy ending (after a lot of pain and tears), so it's worth to read it till the end!

Not so long chapters, but the book had soo many stories, twists and turns. Simple yet deep plot. I love the book specially the 2 ML and also the interaction of the doctor and his bodyguard with the 2 ML. Been a while since I read a BL story.

Actually the some scenes reminded me of several other BL novels I read, had a nostalgic feeling through out the story at some places.

I was very satisfied with this story! Not too long, not too short. Straightforward plot, and well executed! It’s nothing particularly mind-blowing of course, but it’s such a refreshing breath of fresh air in how simple and effective it is. I would say, if you need a pick-me-up after reading (or dropping) some nonsense novels, this is the perfect treat.

The translation is good too. Easy to read and understand. Also good in that “refreshing” aspect in case you’re a little tired of barely edited machine translations lol.

I give it a pretty high score, but relative to other works I gave 4 stars to, it should be lower. I enjoyed it a lot in the beginning, even though I feel like the obsession with Meng Chen (MC) was underdeveloped and wasn't fleshed out. The junior brother was easily dealt with, despite the torment he put the MC through in the previous life. The master was fine, but I don't think the reason why he was different in his previous life. As for the senior brother... he was... more>> dealt with abruptly and for his actions in the later part of the story it came out of the blue, and felt OOC to some degree.

Spoiler

The whole secret mastermind thing came out of nowhere. It could have worked with proper build-up, but he just didn't have it. There was foreshadowing that someone was pulling the strings and giving people false prophecies, but then it turned out to be senior brother. Suddenly there was this whole plot of constant reincarnation for 3000 years, and it wasn't fleshed out at all. The senior brother just shows up in the last few chapters without any real set up. And again it's just hard to reconcile this whole plot with the senior brother's established character.

[collapse]

There's a turn in the story where I felt that Xue Lang (ML) became an entirely different character, hardly reminiscent of what he was before. He was still pretty likeable, he became a more typical ML, but the loser husband kinda guy. But with his character change, the dynamic between the two also changed. I really enjoyed their dynamic before, however after it just became a generic wife chasing gong x pampered shou. In the beginning it felt balanced, with both of them caring around the same amount and putting around the same effort into the relationship. Then there was a period where the ML had to chase the MC around, and although you understand why the MC behaves the way he does, it's not really something the ML deserves. He never wronged the MC, so just making him chase the MC without any love back was painful to watch, and made me dislike the MC. Then when they get back together, the balance still isn't restored, and the MC becomes completely passive in the relationship, and the ML has to initiate all the time, not to mention he does all the grand gestures of affection, while the MC just receives it. Basically, ML is lucky that MC is with him, and that's it. The MC is often annoyed with the ML's antics, and we can't really see the fondness he used to have for the ML.

I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with this dynamic, but it wasn't the dynamic I signed up to in the beginning. Admittedly, I liked the ML better and would have wanted him to pampered a bit more. Again, the treatment he got felt wrong in the grand scheme of things, when he didn't wrong the MC at all, and put in the more effort.

Another side note, that in the beginning of the story the MC was the stronger one, which was fresh for me. But over time it was flipped, disproportionately so. From then on the MC didn't lift a finger and felt really weak.

If you're interested in the context, here are the spoilers:

Spoiler

The ML sacrifices himself to kill the master and free the MC from him. He does this by summoning a powerful demon lord, scattering his soul and letting that demon occupy his body. The MC is saved, but heartbroken. He sets out to search for MC. The ML becomes a demon lord, but has amnesia. He has no idea who he's, doesn't remember his life as the ML, nor has memories as a demon Still when he sees the MC he falls in love, and starts chasing him. The MC thinks that the ML is gone forever, and the ML in front of him is just a demon in the ML's body, so he rejects him and gives him the cold shoulder. Then the MC realises that the demon might actually really is ML, he's overjoyed and takes the ML for treatment. ML gets back his memories, but not really his personality and is still constantly insecure and jealous of his previous self.

As a demon, the ML is leagues stronger than MC.

[collapse]

I would still recommend this read, as it's still enjoyable. But I think it at one point it turned into more generic, and I lost the love I had for the characters. It's also more of a romance than anything else. <<less

Great read, highly recommend!! Engaging unpredictable plot, likeable MC and ML, a lot of PDA. The essence of this novel, for me, is a huge difference between pe*verted sick relationship tropes, often found in this type of literature vs actually good healthy bond between main CP. Great translation quality. It was also interesting to read about a young ML, who actually acts his age and strong, smart MC. Enjoyed it tremendously, finished in three days.

A good novel. Usually, men whose personalities similar to that surname Pei and surname Yin can be seen in so many novels as the male lead. Their obsession usually leads the MC into isolation and go against MC's wishes. But the male lead in this novel? He's different. This novel is very sweet and felt like a breath of fresh air because of the male lead, Xue Lang, does not obsess the MC to the point where he wants to imprison the MC. He also allows the MC to make... more>> many friends and let the MC find his own happiness.

So far, I really like their dynamic. It feels very balanced and non-toxic. But reading the review from Ninilia made me a little sad. Because I don't want that balance to be broken or have this novel become just like those other generic novels. Therefore, my journal shall end at chapter 31 in fear of being let down later on.

I did jump directly to read the last chapter plus the two extras though. Glad that ML's personality is still the same. One of the best ML I've read in bl novels. <<less

First of all I loooved this soo much ❤️❤️❤️ I definitely recommend reading it. (Caution!!! This felt like a breath of fresh air for me since I read generic novels one after another prior. Therefore my review might be biased.) It's not too long but not short either. The plot twist had me twisted in my seat I seriously thought it was gonna be BE for some chapters. Green flag ML with strong MC yum😋. A con may be MC's beauty? You'll get it lol. Anyway I didn't find it... more>> annoying though. Also there were some parts I didn't understand completely but since I MTLed I won't comment on those parts. <<less

The novel was very wonderful, although it is not the best (for those who have read many novels of this type).

But I really loved her and I loved Xiu Lang and Ming Chen's love so much that I felt jealous. 😂 There were some side characters that I wanted to know the ending of, like the girls who returned to their families, what happened and how they dealt with them, or the story of Chen Li's wife more.

The fights were fast paced though but I really enjoyed reading them so if... more>> you're hesitant to read them I really recommend them. <<less

I really enjoyed this book, but there are a few things I want to clear up. The summary makes it seem that the entire sect is obsessed with him, but it is just his master and his direct disciples. While there are a few weirdos, most of the other members of the sect are normal and quite endearing! They're not complex or anything, but its refreshing for the leads to have good interactions with side characters. The school culture is quite well defined. There is a lot put into the... more>> curriculum (more than usual) which really added to the world building. The first part of the story was a solid 10/10 and so enjoyable to read. What everyone else says about the ML is true; he has to be my favorite ML I have read in a long time. He is so endearing, adorable, and lovable.

I also want to clear up some things that other reviewers have said:

Spoiler

For convoluted reasons, MC thinks ML is dead, but he really isn't and is in another body. Because of amnesia and misunderstandings, MC is justifiably upset and mean to ML since he doesn't realize the new body is ML and does not want to betray his feelings to ML. This section is a hard to read since their past relationship is so lovely, but it is short and their actions are understandable. I just don't want people to drop because of this since this section is pretty minor.

[collapse]

While the 3/4 is really great, the ending is really rushed and just kind of ridiculous. The rest of the story is somewhat grounded but it just goes crazy towards the end. They also introduce a new couple who I did not care about since we had so little time with them. I still think the story is worth reading despite the disappointing ending because the beginning is so enjoyable. <<less
