Out of selfishness, he had favored his consort and neglected his wife. Ultimately, the one who stood by his side was the wife that he had neglected for 10 years…

After being reborn, Jing Shao decided to repent and turn over a new leaf…

phenomenal read filled with palace intrigue and politics!

a man full of regrets and bad memories is given a second chance to make things right; the third prince jingshao experiences a rebirth at a time when he is freshly married to his male wife. In his first life, he resents his wife, but after experiencing his wife's devotion and loyalty even in death, he is determined to make things right!

i absolutely loved this book. It had just the right amount of drama to keep the story interesting, and unlike other danmei... more>> gongs, he is doting and extremely loveable.

4.4 is too low for a rating, but I understand because sometimes the story feels too drawn out. At times like that I skim and all is well. <<less

I was so reluctant to read this novel because I hate reading novels with consorts and stuff. I don't like harem. But still, mustered the courage to read this and was not disatisfied!

There's no harem! It's a one on one love story. MC (seme) was very doting. In the end though, he wasn't able to share about his rebirth and I could understand that. If I were in his shoes, I would also feel uncomfortable talking about it. It might also be a reason of disharmony between the husbands.

Anyway, the... more>> ML (shou) was also the brain in this novel. He was a literati so basically, he did like majority of the decisions when it concerns the MC. He was a decisive person, he's somewhat shy with the MC wants to do that DEED. But nevertheless, he loves the MC.

There's also a catch between the MC's brother Jing Chen and a certain King, it's funny 🤣

It's a H.E and no stress between the couple's relationship ❤️ <<less

Super cute story. Plot has substance but doesn't drag on.

MTL has some problems. JS is very devoted and there isn't a r*pe scene in the second life.

*Disclaimer, this is all just my opinion, I do see how others might really love this story, but for me it's a solid 2.5 stars.

I agree with another reviewer, this novel is trying to be too many types of story, but it's just not working.

For a comedy, /shameless wife simping story, there is too much fighting and palace intrigue.

... more>> For a drama/royal intrigue, the comedy bits with the MC shamelessness seems out of place.

If it's a comedy, the MC being basically a meathead with not much in the brains department makes sense. For a palace intrigue drama, with him being so hot headed I'm surprised he lived until 20. I also started to dislike the MC after chapter 80 or so. He becomes forceful and shamless with the MC, not sweet like the first volume

ML is ok I guess. The author makes him a little black bellied and scheming at times and then other times makes him kind and generous. This would be okay but I don't think it's written well, and makes the character design inconsistent.

By the third volume I was pretty bored by the story, but had invested so much into it that I finished it.

I love redemption stories, and really wanted to love this one. I think the issue for me is the palace intrigue was too boring. The manhua has been translated some and I recommend it only to see how pretty the outfits are, otherwise it cuts out all the good bits 😏 and the flow is choppy in some places. <<less

This story suprisingly good, personally I like the whole content of this story...

They are all delivered in a simple and unhurried way, besides that the plot is also consistent and doesn't spread anywhere (well this often happens in stories with reborn themes, where instead of solving the conflict that causes MC death, they are running around and looking for other/new problems)

So yeah this novel is great... ... more>>
Spoiler

I mean yeah of course there are still a little plot hole, and the ending itself is still a little bit lacking (about ML Mother and how the poison things comes and work) but it is still within acceptable limits, so...

Really enjoyed this story!

I thought this story is like those typical extreme tyrant pampering story (eg 'I didn't love you enough' and similar) but it wasn't:

... more>> 1. This story actually has decent plot and smart court politics.

2. Great side characters that are sufficiently fleshed out and made sense to have them. I particularly like the 2nd prince. His Extra side story was great too and gave me a pleasant surprise! Also, love the relationship the 2nd prince has with the gong.

3. The gong (forgot whether gong is ML or MC, I read this a while ago) is not the typical OP gong. He is only OP in terms of fighting. He is actually not super smart when it comes to scheming and court politics. He really needs his 2nd brother and his shou in this respect. And I loved this premise. It makes the gong more cute and likeable. I do get fed up typical omnipotent tyrant who always becomes the emperor. At least I will still remember this gong after a year.

4. The shou is smart, but modest. He eventually gets his dream fulfilled and becomes successful but it is not the typical OP road. It was a normal jouney. Only once or twice I thought the author made it too easy for the shou (too OP, when the shou investigated the army of the gong), but besides that the shou actually has worked hard to get there.

5. Very likeable couple! Shou has all the brains and the gong is all brawns. The gong listens to the shou's planning. They really make a super cute and successful couple. <<less

This is a bit of a guilty pleasure danmei. What I love the most is a tragic character who (in the 1st chapter, not a spoiler) dies unloved getting doted on and appreciated by the main character after. You get to experience more of the establishing of the relationship WITH romantic context rather than the typical danmei love story full of missed connections and misunderstandings. There's plenty to dislike about the brutish nature of the main character and the restrictions of the court politics and sexist undertones but the novelty... more>> of the established relationship setting was exactly what I wanted.

The updates stopped on chap 91, however the translator posts them on patreon!! I don't know if the editor is out but if you want them unedited but translated check their patreon. <<less

Does anyone know about another novel by this author called 君為下? I don't know the English name. But the titles look similar and the print copies are often sold together. I can't read very much Chinese so I can't read the description for myself but I was very curious if this book was a sequel or set in the same universe or something??

Anyway, as for TWF, it is by far the most consensual and mutual bl relationship I've read in a danmei novel so far that has s*x scenes. (MDZS... more>> loses a few points for never discussing WWX's CNC kink and for the first kiss scene, but also because the characters don't get together until the end we don't see as much of their daily lives.)

This book is full on fluff and mutual respect and deep love. I like it because the audience can clearly see both characters falling for each other and none of it feels forced or unbalanced. There's a lot of talk about high society etiquette that can be quite dry but things do become more exciting later on. <<less

It's a decent read. The MC and the ML are pretty likable characters and bonus points for having the same POV. It's pretty much the rebirth plot- making things better and loving the one who I ignored last birth. No plot twists to be expected here. This novel is completely drama based and is mostly driven on how the MC solves problems caused due to his family and how he makes up to he ML in this life.

This is about "a Second Chance"

When Cheng Wang, the handsome prince who tries his best to fix all his mistakes to his beautifully handsome wife Jung Qin.

Jung Qing is a whole package...

... more>> He got the look, a white and smooth skin, a good heart, smart and everything....

Cheng Wang is handsome and got a second chance

DID I CRIED ?

NO

DID I LAUGH ?

YES (extra chapter only)

I love the extra chapter,

it was so fun and I laugh a couple time...

For me personally it will be more complete to add more humor in the novel as funny as the extra chapter

I know this is not a comedy novel, but the author has a comedian talent...

Why don't you explore it more in that aspect

NOTE:

There is a audio drama, just give it a try..... you won't regret it <<less

I love this novel, particularly the interaction between ML and the MC. The MC dotes and respects the ML so much that I feel my teeth aching from the sweetness?...i never get bored/tired reading the chapters, already translated, repeatedly while I wait for the next chapter release.

This story had so much potential but the author focused more on JS eating vinegar and s*x scenes than developing the plot.

I forced myself to finish this novel and was left feeling empty.

Also if u replaced MH a wonan there'll be no difference. His character was too submissive and boring.

honestly, the one star comments is right. MC is tr*sh in both life. he is just doing it different way.

but I also want to be honest here that I read for the couple and character development... between couple. I dont really give a damn about other characters outside their interferences. as long as it is an OTP.

so here we go....

anyway about the story.

its good. has good writing. sometimes kinda dragging but still okay. after all this is only 100 ish chapters.

i read this on mtl so I was kinda curious why the early chapters I dont have problem in reading, but the middle to last chapters I have lots of difficulties. like the pronoun for which character the suddenly change to other characters, MC or ML teleported (not literally but somehow I read that he was still in bedroom and suddenly "the horse hoffed" he already in front of plaza >> this is just methapor, also the pacing was too quick cause lots of things happen like war with barbarian, go to border, meet someone, siege someone, rush back to capital, dead emperor, usurp, betray...

what I write upstair is bulshit. its been so long since I read I dont remember the plot anymoe lol

4.1 Stars

Date Read: 17/06/2024

Personal Enjoyment: 4/5

... more>> This was an entertaining read. It was good, not great or GOAT but like a solid 8/10 for me. Nothing really stood out in particular but there also wasn't really anything that I disliked. I do like this type of setting, 2nd chance and romance. I also liked how all the side romances can be the main characters of their own interesting yaoi story without it being too much or too cringy.

Short Summary: Gong, a military-minded MC died in regret and was brought back to the night of his marriage to the ML who stuck with him when everyone betrayed him. Even when he should have ample reasons to also leave him. This story is about how he does what he can to undo his regrets in his past life by investing in his relationships that he didn't before.

Plot: 4/5

The plot was good, as expected in this type of 2nd chance ancient China story with scheming, harem fighting and war. But a good chunk is the romance between the MC and ML and explicit smut lol.

Writing/Translation: 4/5

The translation I read from C5.3-Completed is from Chrysanthemum Garden. As usual, it is great but a little bit not as perfect. Some of the last few chapters weren't edited so some of the names weren't capitalised or spaces. But otherwise, it wasn't an issue.

However, the writing is a bit hard to understand the relationships' cause and effect. For example, since the first chapter, the relationship between the MC and his elder brother seems contradictory. There was a sentence that seemed like he spurned his elder brother. But when he was brought back, he happily clung to him. So I thought he thought badly of the older brother before and now he is using his 2nd chance to be close to this older brother who cared about him before. But then, we get this scene when the older bro was injured and comforting the MC who was anxious about the injury. There was this reflection that oh, his older brother really does care about him. But I thought he already knew that? Why another realisation now? So yeah, the messyness of the writing is not a dealbreaker of a situation but it could definitely be a lot clearer. I feel there is an emphasis on weird points of the overall relationship development when it might be better to be more gradual. Or it just could be the translation. Chinese meanings come across differently in English. So the nuance is a bit lost maybe.

But I got used to it after a bit and then never noticed anything as an issue. It was only really the first like

of the story.

Pacing: 3.9/5

The pacing is a little bit slow at times. Or maybe it's my personal preference because I'm not interested in smut lol. Or light novel type romance. There are multiple chapters where the smut took up more than half the chapter haha. And I am not a fan of the top and bottom dynamic so I skimmed a lot of all that so that may be why it felt a little slow in those bits. However, the rest of the pacing was pretty good.

Setting/Worldbuilding: 4/5

Not bad. I felt like I travelled the world a bit with the story so it did something reasonably right. There were a lot of different places the story happened in so the variety was good. And the story made good use of all the different places to add things to the plot or story in some way.

Characters: 4.5/5

I really liked all the characters. The MC is likeable enough and is straightforward. The ML is a downtrodden bottom who grows to like the MC and gains his potential he thought gone with this imperial forced marriage. Every side character was interesting and likeable. A lot have their own nice intro and some had important roles in the story. They were also different from each other and had their own mind and personalities. I do wish we had more of them. The side characters also had their own relationships with each other, not the most real or the most deep but the fact it exists is a step up. The antagonists were kinda of typical people vying for power of the throne though so eh.

Romance: 4.3/5

The romance is good for its type. Not a fan of the top/bottom thing which this relationship is a very typical one. But 70% of the time the MC does pay attention to consent at the important points. At the very least, I didn't get the fury in my gut I usually do for the ML for having to endure the loss of body agency. Mostly because we are in the head of the MC and he really really cares about the ML. Who knows, if I read from the ML's POV, I might feel furious lol.

It took me 4 tries to finish this story because the manhua was too draggy. Thankfully the novel has much better pacing.

While the novel is well-written, there’s a lot of dubious plot points that were hastily skipped over because the author had no real way to explain it.
Spoiler

The most obvious being JS returning to the past. How? Why? I don’t know. And even till the end I don’t understand Prince Jing’s consort and her downward spiral. I was expecting some kind of justification like JS had previously harmed Prince Jing but she hated him for being a bastard son? When he’s Prince Jing’s full-blooded brother? I don’t understand.

It's been a while since I've read this but I figured it would be a bit of a disservice to not give it even a short review, just to get my thoughts out.

Overall, it's a decent novel which features our MC Jing Shao and his male partner, Mu Hanzhang. The romance isn't so overwhelming, and the palace intrigue and court politics takes up much more of the novel than the former does; but it's not so hard to follow. Rather, it's simplified for its readers at times. Not that I'm... more>> complaining about all that jazz. I actually enjoyed it pretty well, all things considered. The plot, and how it flows as the chapters progressed, was what kept me *figuratively* turning the page. The sweet moments between JS and MZH were more like dessert after an entertaining round of palace drama.

If I had any gripes with the story— or, rather, our main couple, it would be this.

Spoiler

IIRC, JS coerces MHZ into s*x somewhere down the line, when their relationship has been stabilized (I think it was after the war). JS apparently makes up for it, but I just thought that the whole interaction was so out of the blue; everything was going well.

Reading the comments in CG, I saw that a lot of people didn't like what JS did regardless, and I wouldn't fault them or anyone for it.

I wouldn't say that this novel is perfect, but it has a few strong sides, which makes it deserving of a high rating.

First of all, I liked that the characters actually acted as if they were from ancient times, especially the ML. Sometimes it seemed a bit annoying that he was so obedient to rules even when, deep down, he didn't want to be. At the beginning, he stayed silent. It looked like he had no backbone, but that was just how he was raised. His status and laws didn't... more>> give him a choice. I loved that, with MC's help, he began to be more independent and sounded out his opinions. He was so clever and talented that it would be cruel to keep him confined in a house.

I also liked that because MC was reborn, the course of history changed. He used information from his previous life to change some unfavorable situations that affected not only his life but also the development of the whole story. Sometimes in those kinds of stories, characters are reborn, but the flow of the story doesn't change, which doesn't look accurate.

Spoiler

The r*pe victim acted as one. Despite the fact that MC changed his behavior and was gentle, and despite the fact that he was a wife and, by the rules, should have obeyed every whim of his husband, he still feared physical intimacy and tensed every time MC touched him. It lasted quite a while, which was more believable than when victims act as if nothing happened the next day. R*pe is a disgusting crime that affects the victim in various ways, so I hate when authors downplay it.

[collapse]

Spoiler

I thought it was nice that even though MC and ML were married in both lives, MC fell in love with ML only in a second life. Because MC only paid attention to ML and truly got to know him only in second life. He felt gratitude for his courage and loyalty in past life but fell in love with ML because of who he truly was, not for his actions in past life

[collapse]

There were interesting side characters who made the story more wholesome. Although I would like to read more about them. Some characters disappeared in the middle of the story. I think they had more potential, and it would be better if the author wrote more about them.

Overall, the story is good; it has an interesting plot; the pace of story telling is fast; all the problems are resolved quickly, and things aren't dragged out; there is no angst; there are a lot of romantic moments. I think it's worth reading. <<less
