When I transmigrated, the protagonist was already dead.

Now, I have to protect the world after the bad ending.

So first things first, I became the enemy of the main heroine, who was on the brink of ending her life.

“I finally understand what all those things you said really meant.”

“I’m like this because of you, junior. Take responsibility.”

“I can only sleep when I’m next to you.”

…But for some reason, everyone is starting to act a little strange.

So, this novel is quite good. Although lacking in originality in some parts, it makes it up with some interesting concepts. I won't go over them in detail, to not ruin the immersion, so I'll only mention whatever happens in chapters 1-10. To begin with, our MC is reincarnated inside this video game which he has finished 29 times (excluding any bad endings he purposely sought out). So he has plenty of knowledge regarding the characters, game mechanics, events and so on. Nothing really original regarding this, a typical academy... more>> reincarnation, which there is nothing wrong with. I am a sucker for these novels.

The major difference between other novels, of the same genre, and this one, is the bandages used by the MC. They are called 'Veil Bandages' and have the unique ability to alter the MCs body (including age, gender, appearance and body structure). Inside this world, there are dungeon where apostles lurk. These apostles are minions of the Demon Sovereign. As you can guess, the MC's goal is to kill these apostles before finally killing the Demon Sovereign to bring peace. This is where the academies come in. The academy students are used to deal with the dungeon because only those who are 19 years old or younger are able to enter. Vikamon Niflheim was exiled both from his family and academy due to putting the third princess of the Empire where he resides in danger. It is after Vikamon is exiled that our MC takes over his body and has to find a way back to the academy. Therefore, he finds the 'Veil Bandages'. He uses these bandages to impersonate the cousin of the third princess and gets into the academy. The most important plot device are these bandages. Although they can alter the body, they also come at the cost of slowly erasing/dulling the emotions: love, hatred and sorrow. Although this sounds rather simple to deal with, you must understand that we unconsciously love ourselves (the reason why we avoid self-destructing), and empathy is felt due to sorrow (since we have felt that kind of sadness, we don't wish other to feel it too). So the implications are worse than you may think. The MC is basically forced to use this bandages to alter his appearance, and will probably continue using them to avoid the dungeon age restriction, since these bandages are that versatile.

The plot is good. Most of the events are already known to the MC due to him having no-lifed the game, but there are twists here and there to prevent the plot from feeling stale, boring and generally 'too easy for the mc'. Moreover, later on there are secrets uncovered which the MC has never seen inside the game, both about himself and the world. So there is plenty to uncover. As of chapter 200, the plot is somewhere around the middle point I would say, maybe a bit less depending on the author. Currently, the pacing is perfectly balanced I would say. A mix of romance, character development and action. No events feel forced or unnecessary. Hopefully, the author does not rush it because every rushed story always becomes mediocre.

Now, regarding the romance/Harem in the novel. Before you click off, expecting brainless interactions, and all female characters trying to land on MC's lower head, the females characters are certainly not useless or brainless, and there are close to no complains about them.
Spoiler

As I already mentioned before, the veil bandages play a big role in this story. You can probably guess the message that I am trying to convey just by yourself. Just by reading the first chapter, you already have a rough estimation of what is going to happen. The bandages basically are used to create a stalemate between the romance of our characters. Our MC is slowly becoming emotionless while the female heroines are slowly understanding their feelings. I would say this dynamic is definitely done tastefully and well. And I certainly like the current development and idea. I am just scared that the author is going to wait with the romance until the latest possible moment, thus giving us only 1-2 chapters of it at the very end. This has happened in other novels I previously read and is certainly distasteful. However, luckily the author does not show signs of going that route. The female characters are trying to rekindle the main characters emotions (which is possible and is mentioned by himself in the first chapter). So the dynamic becomes: A couple of girls are contesting with each other and are trying to make our MC feel love again. It is certainly a nice idea and rather unique in my opinion. I have read plenty of academy novels, and even more harem novels, and I have only seen this 'losing emotion' trope in 'I Became The Academy's Blind Swordsman' (highly recommend, very good novel, TL mediocre though, and unfortunately dropped by author at around 400 chapters ☹).

[collapse]
So the romance is there, and it's a slow burn since it takes more than a hundred chapters to see any notable romantic feelings blossoming. Currently, at 200 chapters, there are about 5-6 girls showing romantic feelings to our MC, with 2-3 more potential ones. So it is not a very big harem. Author-nim has managed to deliver quite well until now, so I am giving him my trust in this one.

So, I already covered a bit of everything in general, without going into heavy details or spoilers. I would say that this novels is definitely worth reading if you are in search of a Academy & Harem novel. It certainly shares some elements with other novels, but nothing major or a 1-to-1 copy. I have no major complaints or anything I particularly dislike either. The harem/romance is a slow burn, done tastefully and the character interaction are fun to read. You certainly may find things to nit-pick if you go in expecting some kind of insane plot. But this novel is more of a simple, light-hearted academy novel which is written well. And it is certainly fun to read. I have nothing more to add, best of lucks in reading. 👋 <<less

I really like this one.

After reading all 140 chapters, I still can't get enough. There are definitely problems as it always seems to throw in another detail, but never do anything with it. Maybe I'm supposed to suspend my disbelief because at the end of the day, he is in a "game world" with an infinite number of clichés. 🧐 TL:DR: It's fun, and I recommend it, even as baby's first webnovel, each chapter is relatively short and there's quite a few chapters so jump in and let's both learn the... more>> joys of reading! <<less

It's a standard academy story with a small twist. If you've read one, you basically know how it goes - guy gets isekai'd into an academy game/novel, replacing a minor villain/mob/protagonist, and ab*ses his foreknowledge to navigate the story amidst impending doom.

The twist here is that he's inserted into an expelled character after the protagonist has already died, which forces him to be a bit more proactive rather than the common tendency for the inserts to fail to fade into the mob life.

However, that doesn't really change that much in... more>> the story compared to the baseline academy story, with the main interesting point being how he actually manages to make his public reputation somewhat villainous, which most villain inserts sidestep.

I can see some reviewers complaining about how much he's trying to stick to canon when it's already shattered to pieces, but irritation aside it does make some sense - using his knowledge to patch together something close to canon might reduce the chances of a nasty surprise ambushing him.

Overall, the first 50 chapters at least set up a promising start, so I'd say this is a 5/5 if you enjoy academy stories and one or two stars lower if you don't. <<less

I liked the concept at first, but the thing with this story is that it feels a bit "stiff" and simplistic (at least to me)... Maybe it's the predictable characters and development, maybe it's the way the author writes his/her story, or maybe it's the author's failed attempts at writing about the MC's psychology... I don't really know, it's probably all of that.

Supposedly, it's not a story about an OP MC. As a matter of fact, the author tries to put the MC in a difficult position (not that baddass,... more>> hated, involved in political schemes, etc.), but in the end the MC seems to be in total control most of the time (and, though his actions and insight are overly questionable, almost nobody questions them; he's free to move as he pleases).

It's not like everything goes according to his plans, of course (actually, the MC is one of these types, who thinks the only way to achieve a "good ending" is to perfectly follow the original game's scenario, but the world keeps throwing variables at him), but he somehow always finds some game knowledge to make things go in the "right" direction, and quite easily at that, which makes those variables look more like bumps on the road rather than actual deviations. At best, the only real "debuff" the author gives his/her MC is that he is hated by the mob... So what?

Furthermore, including the MC, I don't find most characters likable. They are very predictable and they all have some annoying quirks, probably there to make them more "interesting".

Also, one of the biggest problems I have with the story is that we have an "omniscient" MC who keeps the details of the scenario to himself for no reason. For example: he keeps talking about Nikita's bad ending, but he doesn't give any details. So it makes you wonder... How can you keep the scenario intact while changing it (to save her) ? and if you can change things, then why do you keep trying to get things back on track, letting her suffer for nothing? etc. Basically, all the questions you have about the story are not actual mysteries, but just things you don't understand because they were poorly explained. Maybe the author will explain all that later in a convincing way, but creating a false mystery based on the fact that the MC is not explaining things properly is just annoying and frustrating.

Overall I find the story so far unattractive, and even boring. <<less

While I know this story overall probably isn't anywhere near as good as I've rated it (It's probably like a 3.5 or 4/5 but my enjoyment was a 5/5), I will still stand by my rating. This is one of the most fun novels I've read.

Honestly, as a whole it's a pretty standard Korean Academy-Harem Transmigration story, if you aren't a fan of those then why are you even here. The whole 'twist' of the story is a decent gimmick but nothing mind-blowing, it essentially just enables our MC to... more>> replace the original MC, there's only really 1 major way the gimmick actually affects the in world characters (but that part is really good.)

The harem itself is so so fun, like genuinely I cannot name a single one of the confirmed or potential love interests that is annoying. Like they may not be the deepest characters ever, but enjoyment-wise? Peak.

The weakest part is probably the main character? I like him quite a bit, but if we are being honest he doesn't feel like that unique of an MC. Still pretty enjoyable though. He's your typical 3rd rate villain side-character who got dealt with early on in the original story, he has no special abilities or anything outside of his game knowledge and that's it. Basically he's a fun and decently interesting MC but he won't be blowing anyone's socks off anytime soon. (Again I really like him though.)

Personally I think the story itself is actually really enjoyable, it's your typical transmigration-academy-harem story where the MC wants to save the world and get a happy ending, but it's still done really well imo

There are obviously quite a few misunderstandings as is typical in an academy-harem story, but none of them are annoying or over the top, they're all pretty much just generous interpretations of events.

Spoiler

If I had to name 1 thing about this series I love it's the Veil Bandages he wears. Before he enters the academy he equips an item for the sake of keeping his identity hidden, these are the Veil Bandages, the idea is the trade-off for wearing them is over time he will lose key emotions (Love, Sorrow & Rage) and this right here is such an amazing idea. At first glance it seems like some contrived way for the author to have a harem story without having the main character need to choose anyone until the story is over, and I'll admit, that's exactly what it does, but it doesn't just end there, as an example his loss of love isn't what you'd expect, sure he loses the capability to fall in love, but he also loses the idea of love as a whole, friendly love, familial love, self love etc, which heavily affects him throughout the story in different ways.

[collapse]

Also one more thing I want to add, the author uploads daily AND they make their own art for the series, I genuinely do not understand how this is possible but I have so much respect.

The art is so goated (the authors insta is @muhwaggocran1 where they upload all the art they make.) <<less

So yeah started out as a classic academy story but well.. with an interesting start which is kinda twisted everything is quite alright but I should say author kinda messed up few parts for starters the most important part of any novel is MCs skills and abilities like character interactions are also important but I'll talk about em later.. so MCs skills.. if you ask me author really did a poor job..I saw side characters having better described powers than our MC.. like all of the skills MC have are... more>> like unimaginable and completely illogical.i mean I know author wanted to make his skills unique and all but damn did he mess up badly

Spoiler

so we start out with MC who doesn't Even have any abilities when he started out but he has plan that was cool he had everything figured out even though his character was done for but from then on... MC gets a item called veil bandage by seducing a witch it was all skimmed out in a single sentence anyways and it was well believable to some extent but the forced plot armour says he bought along few items along with those veil bandages which helps him to transform into other character that required to infiltrate academy

[collapse]

Yeah after some what passable item collection MC enters academy against all odds but from here on what MC does to gain powers and the skills he got are no way logical at all.. they could've been cooler if author described them better but nah all of the MCs fights were so underwhelming lame to be honest I mean I can't even picture bare minimum of what tf he's doing there they say steel comes out fire comes out explosions comes out thunders comes out and everything is cool since he has steel body.. and dony even start me on the evolution of his powers based on fights like at every fight a new feature of his power gets explained as if a forced plot armour.. like when MC feels cold we get hit with info saying "I'm safe cause this steel power has feature of heat" so I'm okay also when he fights fire.." I'm safe cause this can absorb fire " and even tho explained but everything is barely logical.. and they talk about magic inscriptions on his body and idk MCs body is steel so he have them on his body and otherwise they're usually made on objects and stuff.. but when MC is using them so much to the point of abusing them.. why the hell is no one in the world using them anywhere not even on objects.. like if they're are efficient (I mean MC used them easily so they have to be) why no one is making them in their swords and stuff and no body even talks about it.. over MCs fights and powers are soo underwhelming.

And talking about character interactions MC kinda pisses us off so frequently throughout the scenarios with his dumbass useless ramblings with characters which honestly seem completely useless.. atleast at the start he did something kinda bad to cheer up the main heroine with good intentions so I was okay with it but.. hell nah I couldn't even get why he played as*hole with whole academy like bro was going on and on and on "im getting hated anyways let's do this it can't get worse" I couldn't get logic behind of that stuff like yeah they're convincing but they doesn't seem necessary that's all. and a minor spoiler
Spoiler

so our MC knows what's gonna happen he knows one of the heroine gonna turn into this super powerful dragon and cause destruction because her brother dead.. so MC saves the brother.. but he fakes his death and asks the brother to go underground and let her go through broken phase and turn into a boss monster the over Powerd if there's a extreme logic behind this I could've been okay like yh this should go but only reason MC gave us along whole arc was " I can't change the plot for the plot she must become monster "like if you want her absent you could've faked her death too you know? But nah she has to go through all the despair and turn into monster so that plot stays like bro? Would it be too much to ask if you described the logic? And what happened after all the boss change? MC pulls of one plot armour after another and somehow defeats her after a lameass underwhelming fight like man zero rating for that fight...i couldn't even understand what the hell he's doing in that fight he says heat cold heat cold extreme heat extreme cold plot armour this plot armour that now boss defeated exactly this is how fight goes beleive ne

[collapse]

Let's talk about author's writing idk if they need to keep count on the no of words in every chapter but man author sure likes to repeat himself too much like every time.. every single time whether it's in middle of a intense fight or just a cut scene when the character appears for like 5 seconds he makes sure to explain their hair colour length of hair their dress their affiliation (noble /Main heroine/ princess blah blah) and then comes the name like if they appear 3 time we gets the description 3 time I wondered if only author kept half of that work in describing MCs fights and skills it could've been better and the repeated phrases.. idk does they think we'll forget who's the protagonist or something... MC literally said atleast 100s of times"I'm not the protagonist of this story" in every fking chapter and repeats the same line "I don't have flame of fire skill" at least a 1000 times at every single opportunity he gets.

Conclusion is that it's actually decent novel except the downsides I said above l coz the concept is really fresh we rarely see that like death of og MC in middle of scenarios and MC going in middle to take over his role it's fresh and interesting so do try reading it. At some point it kinda annoys you but it has nice mood to it. <<less

I usually like academy settings. But this one disappointed me.

One of the major issues is the lack of detailed explanations. The MC needs something and he somehow gets it and it is not even mentioned properly. For example: ... more>>
Spoiler

It was mentioned that the MC talked to the headmaster of the academy about transfering a student from another academy and the headmaster accepted it. But how did he even convince the headmaster? Not a single thing explained. There are other similar occurrences like this and we don't get details about them.

[collapse]

The characters feels empty. Usually when I read novels I can relate and feel attached to the characters. But relationships between the MC and other characters feels superficial. There are not enough scenes to develop their relationships.

The power system is not explained properly. It is said that the original protagonist Lucas possess the flames of resolve. It can cure Iris's nightmares and it is basically very powerful. But it is never explained with details. Same can be said for the other characters (Isabelle, Iris, Solvas and so on). Their powers are all explained on surface level.

The events themselves lack urgency or a sense of direction. While it's not boring all the time, the story often fails to convey why certain events matter in the long run. As a result, it's hard to feel invested in what's happening or excited about what's next.

The veil of bandages has not effected the story a lot yet (until chapter 100). But If I had a complaint that would be
Spoiler

after losing the ability to feel love, there's barely any noticeable change in his behavior. It's mentioned, but not shown in a meaningful way.

[collapse]

Overall it is not good. Some people seems to enjoy it, but not me. Only major flaw of this novel for me is that its lack of details. The power system, characters' relationships and various events happening are not described enough. If this was fixed it could be 4/5 maybe even higher. But I will still continue reading to see where it goes. <<less

Critical Rating: 4

Personal Enjoyment: 5

All in all, you know what kind of novel this is. It's a korean academy novel with our protagonist in a misunderstood backstory trope, so if you enjoy those you'll feel right at home. It starts off with the MC of the world dead and you have our protagonist start as just a side character with seemingly nothing, but their knowledge of the world.

Their sole goal is to fix a bad ending that has already begun, and they will do whatever it takes to ensure the... more>> remaining plot points aren't destroyed, even if it means hurting themselves in the process. Whether or not, you're against another MC doing the follow the story line trope is up to you, but I find it's fine for this character even though the answers the author created for his attitude towards love a bit heavy handed..

The most important aspect for these stories are character development and interactions. I really enjoyed the development of the characters and my particular favorite character arc was of the "unrequited love interest" who progressed pretty far from where she once was. The conversations between characters were also fun to read. This is the main reason I would recommend reading this. <<less

To put simply, MC reincarnated into a third rate villain which the plot is broken, the real MC is already expelled, and the story MC dies.

While the common one is to broke the plot to create absolute happy ending. This one is to reattaching everything with sacrifice and manipulating.

The very thing that makes me very attached to this series was the way MC interacting to every characters is unique and funny. It's very laughable when they bickering each others.

It very promising so far.

To expand more on its basic premise, the MC gets sent into the RPG pixel style game world he has played countless times to get to all endings including bad endings. In this world, there are 6 academies who basically trains children 17-19 years old to raid the Demon Palace since only those aged below 20 can enter it. These students must kill the demon apostles in there before it reaches full power and wrecks havoc in the surface. Our MC gets sent in the middle of one of the... more>> bad endings where the protagonist was team wiped during one of his raids which occurs around the middle of the game's story. Unfortunately for our new MC, the body he gets is of a student whose only redeeming trait is high stamina and good looks and is already disowned by his family and expelled from the academy at this time. As such, he must go back to the academy and somehow steer the story into a happy ending in place of the now deceased protagonist.

For anyone who likes reading about Korean Fantasy Academy stories, give it a try. It is a joy to read.

It has an interesting enough premise that sets it aside from other stories of this genre, a decent world-building, has combat that relies on teamwork and what is really important in stories like these, interesting and entertaining characters that has a good progression and development.

The thing that makes the MC and characters progress and develop in such an interesting way is because of the veil bandages as mentioned by another reviewer. It makes the user change appearances in exchange for losing one of the 3 fundamental emotions; love, anger, and sorrow.

Spoiler

The first emotion he lost was love but since he wore these bandages for a whole year compared to the original protagonist, overtime he lost all 3. Losing these 3 aren't so straightforward either, his loss of love included self love and with that losing fear making him more reckless and self sacrificing. With the loss of anger, he started caring less about things so any insults thrown at him or deplorable actions he witness stops affecting him. With the loss of sorrow, he lost his empathy unable to even worry about a friend who might end up dead.

[collapse]

That item played such a significant role in the character dynamics since it makes the MC a lot more interesting seeing how the loss of emotion affects his character throughout the story, allows the harem to stay without feeling like a wasted addition, makes the heroines try much more in expressing their feelings in order to restore his emotions and makes the characters pay more attention to MC to identify him while using another appearance.

As for the story, it has enough twists and turns to keep you hooked and the MC is sharp enough to infer some butterfly effects and oddly piled up coincidences to notice these. The action scenes when it comes to one on one/many duels are good to showcase the MC's power but is not that detailed and well choreographed but the group battles are intense and team work has a huge impact on the performance. The fights against the demon apostles would have you on the edge of your seats since their abilities vary and one wrong move could cost a team mate's life.

In my opinion, this novel is on the level of "The Extra's Survival Guide at the Academy" and can even surpass it if it keeps this level of quality. <<less

My main complaint is that the through-line tone is often of the grind of a dull aching despair, and doesn't tread towards hope or a lively sense of escape.

The novel is well told and executes its concept well... but for me lingering through the duller slower paced elements, the lingering sentiment through those is really unpleasant to linger on.

This means that there's a tense anxiety that trends when the author slowly develops an element... which means I'm not enjoying the novel because my desire to rush the reading towards the... more>> next element's development.

This technique might work best with an established author and a dedicated reader base. The tension then would be butting up against a sort of manic joy in reading a new work, and a pleasant expectation of previous experiences surprising in their qualities of execution.

Note how Harry Potter become a more dark and brooding work over time, yet retained an enthusiastic reader base. Short changing the process here, shows that it can be a tenuous struggle to keep a brooding tone, and at the same time inspire a reader to read more. <<less
