《Devil》 tells the story of Chi You, the protagonist shou, who was killed by someone and cultivated for revenge with the help of Feng Li, the protagonist gong. When Jiang Luo woke up, he transmigrated into the body of the cannon fodder that killed the protagonist shou.

What’s even worse, he transmigrated at the time when the protagonist shou was already killed by the original body.

At the funeral, Jiang Luo was pushed in front of the coffin.

The deceased body of the protagonist shou in front of him was serene, with a smile at the corner of his lips. However, Jiang Luo knew that he had turned into a malicious spirit and was eyeing covetously at him.

The more dangerous it was, the calmer Jiang Luo became. When his desire for survival reached the critical point, he knelt on the ground with a puff, and forced himself to cry.

With his sincere emotion, he said: “Chi You, I love you so much. Please don’t leave me…”

The chilliness around him smothered slightly.

I absolutely LOVE this novel. The chemistry between the leads is genuinely so crazy, and I also think that the world setting is incredibly intriguing. This one kinda hits at one of my favorite dynamics (yandere x yandere), so you can take my review as a little bit biased, but I would highly recommend at least giving this a try. So good.

The main couple took the phrase 'Keep your friends close but your enemies closer' LITERALLY

┬┴┬┴┤ (͡° ͜ʖ├┬┴┬┴. These two 'enemies' have much more spark and are much more intimate than any of the top lovey-dovey novels out there (ABO novels would give them a run for their money though!). Both of the main characters are cynical, conniving, deceitful, selfish beings that's why they are a match made in hell. The only person that downgraded the quality of this novel is the previous translator (A rare occurrence) that completed this... more>> book; though I'm still thankful that I had the privilege of reading it with one/two brain cells. I've completed the story and was happy that I stuck to it.

At the beginning the story was really engaging, but it became a drag to read at some point. Especially so during the chapters that start to 'focus' on the MC. It felt like the other interesting characters kind of got black listed or something at some point. All in all, the story would have been better if the other characters were included more or remained a equal amount of inclusion in the story, like at the beginning chapters, as... more>> the story progressed.

I would have given it a higher score, but the ending gave me mixed feelings.

Spoiler

I was really annoyed that I didn't see Feng Li's ending. He wasn't included much even though he was originally the main ML. He was sort of cut out of the picture by MC, because he disgusted MC and reminded him of his messed up nanny.

Not to mention some of the other characters not getting any ending summary that felt complete. Although, the extra is an extra, I would have liked to see further in the future. I mean MC and ML can live for a long long time, and we only got to see Chi You proposing to MC in the last chapter. (〒﹏〒)

I could have also done without Qi Ye's ending extra. It made me so sad that he was screwed over from beginning to end of the story. On the one hand it's something that might have been perceived as realistic, if not for the fact that he ruins his entire life continuously. Let's be honest, who'd continue to pay a debt that isn't theirs so righteously and s*upidly. I feel like there should have been a end to it at some point and the debt he'd have realised that he needed to pay for, really shouldn't have costed that much more than everything he as the direct family heir held. They were one of the six famous families, I find it hard to believe that the treasures in their house amounted to so little.

4-4.5/5 because most of the novel (because of the translation) reads like almost bad MTL which is crazy: 1) he/her used interchangeably—still not sure the gender of some of the side characters, 2) the sentence would repeat like this. The sentence would repeat like this. 3) the potential added complexity with a good translation, 4) oh, and "the evil spirit", "evil spirits" continuous repetition. Open to re-reading with a new translator because the plot line and tension between the characters seem good (diamond in the rough vibes).

Despite that, I still... more>> managed to finish the novel which is a testament to either a solid plot line or my preference for strong leads.

Their love progression is well-paced and thought out, fitting naturally with what has been established about their characters. It was interesting to read the development based on their 'morally grey' villain-esque mentalities and how MC balances it with more traditionally accepted morals. The tension between the two is palpable, especially in the earlier half of the novel where they are enemies trying to suss each other out. Was really curious how it would develop into eventual romance and it delivered well with the use of non-cannon fodder side characters. Yes, in the beginning it became a game of "which side character is actually the evil spirit in disguise?" which got on the verge of overuse but got saved by the ML's game, which helped in great plot point progression.

Spoiler

Cute when they played a guessing game on who the ML is hidden amongst the side characters.

[collapse]

I quite enjoyed the different metaphysical dangerous situations that MC had to overcome in the beginning that helped him get stronger. Engaging enough and interspersed with sufficient leads interaction to make it even more exciting. It helped build up the side characters which I connected with as well.

Spoiler

When Dead Ghost (死鬼 which is also a way to curse at someone btw) died!!

[collapse]

The novel/transmigration plot was also somewhat explained in full, to a satisfying enough manner. Although I didn't quite get

Spoiler

did the 'predestined man' know they were in a novel setting? How did he know to pull MC in from another world? How did he even accomplish that? Just random insert of him rubbing off the mole? Is this a translation issue?

[collapse]

And I kind of wish

Spoiler

ML would find out that it's a novel setting and that MC liked ML when he read the novel—and the subsequent hehe fluffy parts.

[collapse]

The eventual confession (!!) was great and the small amounts of unwilling fluff after (especially the extras) were really enjoyable. The hinted at smut... wish there was better translation.

My favourite side character would have to be the ginseng baby. SO CUTE with its healing ginseng tears, hahahaha. "Daddy, save me~" MC eye roll.

Almost favourite with chance to be solid favourite with great translation. To revisit in the future :) <<less

  • @sbob I have cleared your doubt about how he transmigrated in the end of this review.
  • Its really an amazing novel and really a fresh breath to be honest. After reading mxtx's 3 novels and loving the mdzs and tgcf so long, I find this novel to be equally amazing. This novel is of different arc totally compared to those but it gives a different taste and quite nice in this genre. There are also other types of black belly and dark characters and their cunning but brilliant schemes related novels, but they were quite repetative and not that exciting or new. This novel is for sure different and gives off the feeling of, "it's quite evil and dark but in a way people could fall in love with".

And I totally love how it doesn't really push much or totally none of my trigger buttons with it's plot or dialogues. And its really not the worst type angst but quite a good sort of slow burn. Their relationship development is quite well reasoned, like, its not the cliche type of suddenly becoming too close or one side pursue crazily and well intentioned in love (like really being truly good) but other stubbornly doesn't want to admit even if they like (really hate such angst).

Totally this novel is such a great one and seriously this will never be kicked out of my most favourite list. Some day I'm gonna re-read it again fully when I mostly forgot it totally or got interest to read it again. I rarely ever have anything favourite because nothing really makes me much interested in or like in long term. So, it's a good pick. The best pick.

Note: even if there is adult things a bit, it's not too explicit or forced. So no triggers!

    See this secret spoiler:

    Spoiler

it's not actually a secret but still, it's really an amazing novel, the english translation might tr*shed it a bit but still, if you put your mind to it, you can understand. Its totally worth the time. Trust me and dive into it!!! Don't miss something so marvellous buddies!

    [collapse]

Its a pity the rating only has 5 stars. I'd glady give it a 99999 stars

. Hope you guys give it a try, it's quite good. Don't miss something so precious. But I really genuinely loved it. I hope you guys enjoy it too. Edit: @sbob, the new comment asking about how the destined man know abt jiang luo and if he know its a plot. I read it with chinese raws so much clear than mtl. I have explained it below: its a great spoiler too.

    Spoiler

Actually destined man doesn't know this world is inside a novel or plot. When the client who came to ask jiang luo for a project in original world, and jiang luo didnt quite listen since it's not his work but someone passed it to him and gave the client something different, the client got angry over his spent money and all because when he was explaining to jiang luo about his wishes on the project, jiang luo seemed quite kind hearted and well listening but it turns out to be all acting?! So then the client is an author it seems. So to relieve his anger, he wrote jiang luo in his novel [evil dead/the novel world] and made him a canon fodder who is tortured by ML many times and die. So only the name and image of jiang luo in novel world is same as in original world. Since it is written by that author with regards of real jiang luo. But, to how destined man know about jiang luo and pulled him into this novel world is because, since the client wrote jiang luo as inspiration into the novel, there seems to be a connection to real world jiang luo and the novel world one. And destined man could tell it. Jiang luo, He is the only one in this world who seems to have connection with a different world. So only destined man pulled him in through this way to change his fate since no one from this world can change the fate except someone from not this world. And so on. Destined man dont know its novel world or anything about plot. He only knows jiang luo of novel's world and original/other world have connection that no one else in novel world have.

(I come from reading Chinese raws). BROooooo. The s*xual tension throughout this novel was off the charts!! I liked the plot to a decent degree and all, but the driving factor that made me not want to put down this novel was the chemistry between the MC and the ML. This is an enemies-to-lovers story, and the trope was done SO WELL. The relationship development is relatively slow; the order goes ML realizes -> MC realizes -> they formally get together, and all of that happens in the later... more>> chapters (but the ML and the MC fall for the other much earlier than they realize lol, you can tell pretty easily.) Each of their confrontations before they end up together is just so *chef's kiss*. Like they actually do have s*x a few times before they end up getting together, but like even outside of any intimate scenes just their physical and verbal confrontations are so CHARGED. And these confrontations happen so often!! Like, you have those plot-driven novels where we're with the MC 90% of the time and then like we get romance sometimes in that 10% of the time where the ML is around. But istg in this novel the ML is never not around in some sense (the ML's power involves puppet-controlling as well as some form of possession, so he has a really easy time to just be... always around lol). And it's not like he's only around for romance purposes nono, the author does such a good job weaving his appearances intricately into the plot itself. And so each of their unresolved sexual/romantic tension scenes are not overly deliberate in any way.

Anyways, let me just give some warnings about our beloved ML and MC. I personally love the heck out of them. But it's worth noting that neither are very morally upright individuals. The ML is straight-up an evil ghost, and he's the "big bad" of the novel that the MC transmigrates into. And while he turns out to not be the big bad after all in the actual story, there's very good reason why he was the "big bad" of the novel. He's got all the qualities. He's OP, mad, unsympathetic. He doesn't give a sh*t about saving human lives. He doesn't want to watch the world burn, he wants to watch it become overrun with ghosts.

Spoiler

He doesn't end up destroying the world because of the MC. But that's not because the MC fundamentally changed who he is. He leaves the world alone because he knows this is the way the MC likes it, and he loves the MC. So yes, he learns to love in end. But all of his positive emotions are reserved for the MC and the MC alone. He still gives 0 shits about the rest of humanity.

[collapse]

The MC on the other hand, is also quite twisted. He's also mad, by the way. This is a story of two madmen falling in love (my favorite!) He's significantly less callous than the ML, we know that from how much he genuinely cares about his friends (but also doesn't give too many shits about the rest of humanity lol). He's quite manipulative. In the very start of the story he basically puts on a huge act of who he is out of necessity, but that is maintained throughout the rest of the story. Even as he becomes genuine friends with the other characters, it's clear that he reserves many of his more real but less morally upstanding qualities for just the ML alone. I think even to the end, all the people around the MC are still not aware of his true face. He's really not that different from the ML.

I really liked the side characters in this novel! The MC and ML both have their "gangs" (difference is that the MC's gang is his friends while the ML's gang is his followers). They're all very... cute individuals lol. We don't get too much of them, as this story is still ultimately very MC-ML and primary-plot focused, but their personalities come out very easily and we also get a good amount of their backstories as well. The MC's friends, especially, are very memorable and different from each other.

As for the plot, it's pretty good. Even though this isn't an unlimited-flow novel, there is some semblance to one. Except for the final battle/climax/resolution stuff, the good majority of the story can be delineated into arcs. Each arc occurs in some sort of isolated space, bound by some set of rules, where the MC and co have to accomplish some sort of objective. Quite similar to the unlimited flow "instances." These arcs were all quite interesting and easy to read but nothing really super memorable. The underlying plotline is also quite interesting, and that's where a lot of the sense of mystery is built. I think the author does a pretty good job slowly revealing information by interspersing it throughout the arcs, answering and creating more questions, and then tying everything up in the end.

Anyways, a great read. Fantastic romance dynamic. Loved MC and ML's characters. Decent enough plot.

(Side note: I also finished Thriller Trainee not too long ago, and there are a lot of similarities between the two novels. But shockingly noticing the similarities did not inhibit my enjoyment of the novel at all!! Most of the similarities were in the beginning, and the plotline becomes very different from Trainee. Some of the romance dynamics echoed each other but I loved how both novels did the enemies-to-lovers trope. ((Although I would more accurately call it enemies-and-lovers ehehehhe.)) The MC and ML of both are similarish in characterization where we have the whole two madmen falling in love thing. But I think they end up being quite different from each other! The dynamic of their interactions also are quite different. But anyways, if anyone reading this enjoyed either one of these two novels, the other is also a must-read!) <<less

Love everything about this novel, from the MC to the ML and the Mc’s friends. The story line is not rushed and the plot is well developed and does not seem forced or hurried. It displays just the right about if reaction. It was funny, sweet and had the right moment for a little angst. Dw it’s definitely not a tragedy.

Would definitely recommend, but I would say is that it was definitely long but each chapter was interesting.

You want to read a story where both MC and ML are yanderes and mutually torture each other, have a sadistic love, and fluffy in a bloody way, chapters that kept you wanting to read for the next and the next? This is the story for you!

Summary: MC was an interior designer with good fengshui knowledge. One day he found himself transmigrated into a book he read. Staring at a dead man's body inside of a coffin, ML. Someone began accusing MC of mu*dering ML who was in the coffin.... more>> Knowing ML's now an evil spirit and will haunt him, he started claiming that he was ML's lover! So that the living people who hated him, for thinking he had killed the ML would protect him. Both MC and ML shared a very bloody back and forth intense game of cat and mouse until chapter 50ish where ML started to feel feelings, not that he knows it's feelings he feels. Then the bloody game between MC and ML turned into a, still bloody, game of tense tempting "come to the evil side", which later on morphed into a sadistic yandere ML chasing his wife game. With a side dish plot of discovering the ML's curse and why he was cursed.

The author actually laid out the important bits early into the story, that would be of importance on the later parts of the story. But there were also some plot holes and some details in the story that goes against the setting that's been established, not that it was too big of a deal, at least for me personally.

Spoiler

Example: The MC earring which led him to go inside or see into other's soul, if someone were to touch it. Because early on MC's soul was tied to his body with a chain, that's supposedly would prevent the MC soul from being controlled, leave the body, or tampered with. This earring contradicts with the chains function, and MC isn't supposed to be able to use the earring.

[collapse]

There's also some details that the author didn't take the time to fully expand and explain, which I think will left some people wondering. But I think the author wanted us to imagine that part and think about it on our own (/□\*). <<less

EDIT: Read through Google MTL. Lots of confusing words but if you're familiar enough, it's still more readable. Still, I hope this gets proper HTL.

And YES, it's real good adventure!!! A bit anticlimactic at the end but that's probably because of the MTL. But I still liked it so much! I don't remember any loose ends and all the hints and foreshadowing were done right.

Someone said MC's friends are a burden. This is not true. His friends are weaker than him but they serve as his tethers to his humanity.... more>> Without his friends, he would've eventually become the next ML.

With that said, MC and ML are both toxic people and I love how the author doesn't even bother sugar coating it or launching into a moral-high-grounding type of redemption. They both remain just as they are and yet we see so much character development and emotional progress.

Plot-wise, the world-building was just enough to hold up the story, which is very nice because we are not bogged down by unnecessary details. We are given just enough for imagination, and just enough to move the plot forward. It has really been trimmed down into a lean narrative, without chunks of text explaining this or that.

--1st review--

Giving it 5 stars ahead of time because I can smell a good adventure even from here.

HOWEVER, the edited MTL is so confusing it's not even funny.

Spoiler

It was not unlucky that Jiang Luo and Qi Ye met the spider man that the tournament authorities had failed to spot during their inspection of Hu Bu village, but it was very unlucky.

Jiang Luo, sleepy-eyed, struggled to pull himself together, " Yun Nan Temple? Which temple?"

Ge Zhu said, "The Golden Rash Temple."

Jiang Luo subconsciously looked at Ge Zhu, a former Buddhist son who had turned from Buddhism to Buddhism, and now he was going to a Buddhist monastery, wouldn't Ge Zhu have mixed feelings?

[collapse]

This is just from one small part of one chapter. I have a strong feeling MTL-ing from the raws would be more understandable than that.

With that said, it's a testament to this story that the quality of its essence can survive the bad MTL. <<less

A well-executed enemies-to-lovers plot, although I wished the MC showed his love for the ML more blatantly.

The plot is interesting and the story is well paced. All the major questions were answered, for example why the MC transmigrated.

One of my complaints would be that I found the side characters boring and, at times, frustrating- especially the MC's friends. I found them to be nothing but a burden to the MC and they didn't contribute much to the plot either.

Although I was enraptured by the plot, I wish there was more... more>> tension and horror.
Spoiler

I feel like this novel would have been more memorable if one of the MC's friends actually died. None of them did although they were all quite weak. Only Teng Bi, one of the ML's subordinates, died and was then resurrected.

[collapse]

I feel like this novel was a better execution of Thriller Trainee. Although the storyline is different, I found that there were quite a few similarities. <<less

Honestly I enjoyed it, it was at times climatic and scary, but it feels like MC is just cruising along the novel sometimes.. yes, he's familiar in design/architecture so is quite familiar in feng shui, but for him to quickly reach a level where he rivals the genius ML is a bit of a reach for me. I feel a bit bad that the rest of the characters arent getting that much love.. Other prodigies cannot compare to the MC (aside from the novel's protagonists). I still can't accept him... more>> being able to fluidly write charms off the bat when everyone else found it difficult and only doable after many years of practice.. the favouritism is real.

What I do like about this novel is the uniqueness in having the ML being the novel's protagonist bottom-turned-top. That's hot. The enemies to lovers trope still gets me and I lived for it.

Personal preference (so not going to impact my rating as much) but I just cannot stomach MC having long / longer hair. I wouldn't have made an issue about this if the story just stops mentioning this specific feature every single time.... I was looking forward to him cutting it so the repetition of him having long hair finally stops (yes I'm s*upid for hoping when the cover literally shows him with the long hair) but the ML stopping him, saying he likes it on him makes me a bit squirmy.. When MC had to crossdress, the author made it a point that you couldn't tell he was a man or a woman and I hated that. I wish for these bottoms to not be tied to femininity so much, and having "longer" hair, fair skin being some kind of a requirement.

Going to continue along the journey of finding untypical MCs.. <<less

The summary is already interesting but the real content is more than a simple cannon fodder trying to survive..

And it's ingenious how you change your opinion about the triangle love '' that don't exists by the way'' because the MC actually haven't read the novel until the end and discover with the reader.

The story is rhythmed by the tasks the MC and friends has to accomplish, with the ML interference. Like "hey, don't forget me". And it's a clever way to develop MC and ML hate relationship into something else.... more>> And the main plot takes a 180 degree turnaround about who's the bad guy. It's quite interesting even if the love is slow paced because honestly, only in novels you can love your mu*derer.. <<less

I really love this story, the MC and ML character makes their actions have some kind of logic (no a normal one for sure). With MC it is obvious that he is petty, vengeful, prideful and ML is similarly flawed character (sadistic, psychotic ect.). They are both emotional but don't really feel emotions with depth a healthy human should. You can tell something is not right. It would be tragic if someone else was to be partner of one of them.

Never knew this has been translated, but... God... Finally.

ML had MC killed 17/18 times, it's no wonder he hates ML to the core (worth to note that each time is torturous as hell

Leads are crazy af

The story pattern is quite visible for each arcs (MC roped into some shady ghostly sh*t - try to solve them - met ML - shady ghostly sh*t turn into complicated shady ghostly sh*t - end) BUT THEY ARE FUN. And the monsters are great.

Romance doesn't start until 50-60 chapter-ish I think... I forgot.

3.5/5, but leaning more towards the 4 than 3.

Interesting and comedic read with a fun relationship and development between the MC and ML.

Honestly, not so much on the plot for me, the development of the relationship between the MC and ML is what kept me going.
