Wang Cuihua, an ordinary corporate s*ave, was on her way home when she suddenly transmigrated into a web novel. There, she became Yu Wanyin, a tyrant’s concubine. As it turned out, it was Concubine Yu’s turn to serve His Majesty in bed that night.

Upon meeting the tyrant, his words and mannerisms gave Yu Wanyin a curious sense of déjà vu. After careful contemplation, she decided to sound him out.

“How are you?” she blurted out in English.

The rims of Xiahou Dan’s eyes reddened, and he fell silent.

At length, he replied, also in English, “I’m fine, and you?”

Started reading this thinking it would be a lighthearted comic take on the reincarnation trope, and instead got s**ked into an intricate twist on harem politics and palace drama, complete with moral dilemmas and trust issues. Both the ML and FL agree to team up yet a hesitant to trust eachither, but even then make a formidable (and fantastic) power couple.

I really like that the author of this story didn't just forget 2 chapters in that the transmigrators were transmigrators- modern terminology still gets thrown around between them throughout the... more>> novel, and all of them do things that seem baffling from a historical perspective.

The main characters are all very human, with interesting twists on their embodied tropes, and there are still lighthearted moments of human beings making human connections and having fun throughout. <<less

Great characters and great story. I wish it was longer so some aspects and plotlines would be explained better, but it's just because I miss those characters. I came to read it after watching the donghua, and I really recommend it too!

I don't have anything to say about the novel - it's f*cking fantastic. I love the 'two funny transmigrators who have to work together' trope, and it's rare to see it done so well. The two of them just crack me up, and the plotline is also shaping up very well.

What I'm really here for is to stan the translator (Crabapple Pavilion at the time of writing). Those frequent updates! The flowiness of the prose! The clever way that it uses colloquialism to distinguish between modern and historical speech! How... more>> it reads so well in English and doesn't smell like MTL at all! This is Ridiculous... ly amazing. A C-novel like no other! Creative, emotional, lyrical, romantic, heartbreaking, regretful, with comedic moments here and there - this story has it all. Don’t be fooled by the low chapters - THIS IS RIDICULOUS is meaty in terms of plot and stuffs a LOT into those ~30 chapters.

I first found this novel via the donghua “How dare you?!”, which I loved. Then I started reading the translations, which made me fall even more in love. Thus far (I’m on ep 6) the donghua is pretty... more>> loyal to the novel!

TRANSLATIONS

Excellent! I love how you can read everything on one website. The translator puts just the right amount of explanation for any culture references. Their prose is gorgeous and suitable for the almost-nostalgic, historical setting of the main story. I can only note minor mistakes, such as paragraphs that were translated twice and switched pronouns here and there. Also be prepared to jump settings in chapters, as there is no break or indication of scene transition. This can sometimes be jarring. Otherwise, it was a super smooth translation which made for an enjoyable reading experience.

UNIQUE BACKGROUND

In a world (aka the internet) full of transmigration stories, THIS IS RIDICULOUS creates a refreshing setting with transmigration-ception. Here me out: there’s a book that the ogFL reads about where a tyrant and his devilish consort reign over a princely brother and nation. The ogFL, Xie Yong’er, transmigrates into that story, teams up with the prince brother and beats the tyrant and consort into success and a happy ending. OUR FL and ML transmigrate into this transmigration story, which puts them on a transmigration tier above the ogFL. Like I said, transmigration-ception. At the same time, the FL and ML may not have transmigrated at the same time. This creates a foundation for a LOT of plot twists and turns, reading into other people’s motives, and leaving clues. I love how the ML and FL find each other from an English phrase and are a power team from the beginning to end. And even though the ML has a tragic secret, the FL takes it all in stride as at that point her feelings for him are 100%.

CHARACTERS PLAYING 4D CHESS

I’m no stranger to palace schemes, betrayals, and plotting, but this story goes above and beyond in every aspect. Picture this: you’ve transmigrated to a story but don’t know if there are other transmigrators out there other than a tyrant emperor whose character is domineering and caught between a palace struggle between the Empress Dowager and brother, Prince Duan. All you know is that your team (the tyrant emperor) is caught in the middle and you kind of remember major plot lines (but not details). The ogFL is intent on following the original plot with Prince Duan’s faction, but Prince Duan is acting out of character and weirdly interested in you and your ability to outmaneuver him. At the same time, your fellow transmigrator the emperor knows a bit too much about the palace dealings as someone who hasn’t read the book... This is what our FL Yu Wanyin has to navigate as a transmigrator. Even though she has a background of a corporate s*ave, she thinks 2 steps ahead even with the novel script. The FL starts out just wanting to survive in the story, but eventually has her own ambition of bettering the world around her and serving the people - no longer thinking of everyone as “paper people.” She’s mentally strong and capable, standing by the ML emperor’s side through thick and thin.

The ML has a tragic past as someone who transmigrated as a teenager into a story he never read. He was lost and innocent as a modern middle schooler in the role of a crown prince, with no one to rely on. While he left clues for a future transmigrator to recognize him, no one replied. After 10 years, he grew up to be a suspicious and manipulated emperor who was also chronically ill. Despite all of this, his hope is renewed with the entrance of our FL and he uses all the knowledge and authority he gained from his years as a transmigrator to work with her to turn the tides. I love how loyal he was to her, and how he wasn’t afraid to do the dirty work (aka kill people). The flashbacks of his past were well-timed, emotional, and gripping, as readers follow the story of how he came to be this way. The ML recognizes the FL as his savior in a way, and treats her like the queen she is. We stan!! Also - the scenes of him doting on her (whether acting or real), pouring hot pot water, and tending to her are sweet and hilarious.

As for the side characters: all written with depth and emotion. From the ambitious Prince Duan whose cold heart is centered on glory and success, to Xie Yong’er’s gradual realization that she doesn’t have to go through the script, each character is personalized and written with care. My heart especially goes out towards the Emperor’s uncle/supporter Bei Zhou - a surprisingly well written gender fluid character (leaning towards trans fem) in this era - as well as his ministers who had their own personalities and passions. The way all the minor characters sit at the forefront of my mind is a testimony of the author’s stellar writing and mesmerizing ability to bring life to these “paper people.” (Although some tragic ends is a contributing factor as well)

WRITTEN WITH HEART

The story had a perfect balance of lyrical prose with metaphors and descriptions of nature, character introspection as they figure out next steps, and actual action/execution. I feel like Cnovels tend to lean one way or the other (ex: some with no emotion and pure action, some with only exposition and no action), but this author includes all the elements of storytelling to keep readers intrigued.

GRIPPING ROMANCE AND SATISFYING CONCLUSION

I loved the ending and how each lives of the main couple were wrapped up. I loved the reunion in modern times. My heart was just so full!!

In terms of the romance in historical times - while there was an easy transition from strangers to teammates, the romance was more steady than expected. The FL weighed out all her options before putting her eggs in one basket - the ML emperor. Meanwhile, the ML appreciated the FL from the beginning and was willing to sacrifice the world for her. Overall I would say it was a pretty healthy and well-balanced romance with each partner loving and respecting the other. Also I love how the FL redirected the harem’s activities to table tennis - LMAO!

OVERALL

THIS IS RIDICULOUS stands at the top of my enjoyed Cnovels, with a refreshing plot and 3D characters. Added bonuses: lots of action with martial arts, assassination attempts, poisoning attempts both successful and not, faking it until you make it, A+ acting from ML and FL, both lovable and tragic side characters, hotpot for the soul, and a beautiful love story.

TL;DR I recommend this story to transmigration lovers! Especially if these elements pique your interest:

  • Transmigration-ception
  • Power team couple!!
  • Ruthless antagonists and main leads that become even more ruthless
  • Amazing storytelling that keeps readers gripped
  • Happy ending!!
Trigger Warnings: s*xual assault/r*pe mentioned, drugging, cannibalism mentioned (oops), slight gore/torture; more info:

Spoiler

s*xual assault: ML was drugged and force bred to have a crown prince when he was 15 by the Empress Dowager. He doesn’t see the crown prince as his child.

Cannibalism: ML orders the guards to feed the villain’s amputated legs to him.

I've MTLed this to the end after reading available translated chapters because it is just that good.

Spoiler

Written from FL's view, there is so much suspense and mystery around everyone's identity and motives, even ML himself. And despite putting the readers into a detective mode scrutinising every little word and action a character does, the novel never failed to highlight the lighthearted parts of life as a transmigrator and the hilarious shenanigans that ensue when two (or three) transmigrators meet each other in ancient times.

I got shivers when the plot started edging on breaking 4th wall:

Spoiler

FL has transmigrated into a book about transmigration (call it book A), where ogFL was supposed to be a cannonfodder but after transmigration, turned things around with her knowledge of the plot of book she read (call it book B). There is an aspect where she brings up the fact that ogFL, even if she thinks she's human and everyone else is a paper character, is a paper character herself as a protagonist of a book (book A). OgFL's character, actions and personality are all written into fruition in book A. FL herself gained a bit of insight and started spiralling into the fact if she might just be a character someone else is reading about (BRUH GIRL YOU ARE). Though this didn't last long, it did give me a lot of goosebumps.

[collapse]

I've never personally read a novel so well executed, that all the hidden plot twists make sense when you think back on it. The ending does seem a bit rushed, but I think it ended at a good point in time because any longer would've been just dragging on. There are some politics that could've been expanded further, but personally wasn't too invested in it so it's better for me (i was here for dog food and I was served dog food, im satisfied).

I laughed, I cried, & I got so emotionally invested that I finished reading all 27 chapters in a day. Come in with tissues, because everyone is laying their lives on the line, for the sake of their loved ones, their dreams, their hopes & ambitions. Even if they're paper people, the weight of those lives won't change.

Came for the hahas and left with the boohoos

I wanted a silly little webnovel, so why was this so intricate and heart-wrenching?! QAQ

FL, ML, OGFL and so many side characters are all so likeable

Spoiler

I was so happy when OGFL was converted to the right side, and then I cried so ugly when she died. I wanted her to survive so badly....

This webnovel does not shy away from bloodshed, be it the gory details or sacrifices of key figures. There's no real cider or Mary Sue moments even though FL is heaven's new chosen one.

[collapse]

Some minor complaints is that there aren't any breaks between scene changes, so it feels jarring when you go from one location to another, especially so when it goes into a flashback, which by the way warrant like a semi content warning

Spoiler

ML was drugged with an aphrodisiac in a flashback when he was a teen, and it's heavily implied that he was SA-ed (doesn't matter who was on top; non-consenting party is the victim in my books) in order to produce a crown prince.

The scene itself is probably just like two or four lines, but I was gasping and clutching my non-existent pearls because the crown prince's conception was one of the biggest questions I had.

[collapse]

I wish the extras were a bit happier, maybe about the characters' next lives, but considering the side characters are all "paper people, " they wouldn't have a next life....

5/5

This story was simply a masterpiece. It really wasn't your usual palace intrigue transmigration story with predictable storyline because you would find so many plot twists until the end. The characters were also very well-written. They were very 3 dimensional and when you thought you could understand them, the author would suddenly pulled another layer above them and made you realized that there're still more of them.

At the beginning, I thought this story would take a comedic tone with lighthearted plot but boy...I was wrong.

I couldn't even begin to describe just how good this "short" novel is.

In fact, it's not short at all. At 27 chapters and extra, the author jammed a lot of twist and turns so each chapter is very very long.

We started with a cliche transmigration story, followed by discovering a teammate transmigrated person and plotting together how to save their lives. Then gradually, the mysteries came up.
Spoiler

like ML already transmigrated since 10 years ago, like how villain is aware of their gifts, and how ML has a sliver of backup plan when you just thought this will be the end.

[collapse]

I love how the conspiracies played out. There's always an interesting turn just when I think I can predict the next move.

Ending is a bit cliche but nonetheless very satisfying.

A sure 5 stars to this story.

Started this novel because of the iQiyi animation, didn't really expect much, because I just wanted to see the ridiculous interactions between FL and ML, but it turned out to be such a hidden gem. I didn't expect all the twists and turns, the depth of each character, and the well written palace plot. In my opinion, the story ended at the right moment, not too rushed nor dragged on.

I love it so much!

If you're looking for a not-so-heavy-on-the-dark-side-and-unlimited-mu*ders historical novel, I highly recommend this one!

It's very enjoyable and the relationship between the two MCs is super harmonious. Their partnership and friendship just fell perfectly into place, even before any romantic relationship. Their personalities are great and they're both effing hilarious. There's nothing too heavy or angsty in the novel though I did cry a bunch of times (I'm an emotional person).

As I've mentioned, the FL and ML have a beautiful dynamic. They're able to literally only rest when... more>> they're with each other, and there's a lot of normalcy. The things they do to bond are really relatable as modern people. They make jokes and references that only the other can understand–I think this and their friendship gives the court intrigue a good contrast.

I didn't expect it to be one of my favorites among novels I found through NU, but here we are. I loved it so much to the point I had to research it to find it in different mediums. And guess what? Apparently there's a donghua coming out! I've seen the PV already. I'm so excited for it! <<less

Started this story because I thought it would be a short comedic uneventful read.

I was wrong.

I was incredibly impressed by the depth of this story that puts many other transmigration or ancient-times novels to shame.

Read if you like

    • Strong MC with morals (21st century modern MC who does her best to stay true to herself and acts like it!)
    • Ethical dilemmas (how does someone with modern ethics and morals and appreciation for human life survive in ruthless historical times?)
    • Mysteries, plot twists, and more mysteries galore
    • Humorous moments, relateable moments, sad moments
    • No filler or padding just for wordcount
I was incredibly impressed that

Spoiler

there was redemption for the female "villain."

[collapse]

Moments that I'll always remember fondly:

Spoiler
    • the humor when the emperor cuts windy people off to "skip" to the point but unfortunately the MC couldn't do the same
    • the first time the MC's maid betrayed her and she had to struggle with protecting herself
    • the scholar (who's life was saved by the MC) protesting at the MC participating in politics
    • the moment the MC realized she could also be a CEO and do it well
[collapse]

And finally, while I liked the ending,

Spoiler

I lowkey would not have minded the MC ascending to rulership much earlier.

[collapse]

Translation was great. Some of the later chapters (after ch20+) needed a bit more editing (eg. The special weapon's name changed a few times) and also some character nicknames. But overall really quality read.

I may rate it again later, but for now I don’t know how I actually feel about the novel. It was very dramatic with many ups and downs! I was almost certain it was a tragedy with no way out for most of the novel. The emperor is in such a hopeless situation. I’ve never seen the life of a political puppet so vividly explained. He works so hard with no way out.

About the r*pe tag

Spoiler

The victim is shockingly the Tyrant. This is off-camera, but a pivotal part of what makes the Tyrant a Tyrant. There is a flashback to a scene explaining that he did not want to leave any children, because he would lose his value as a puppet. He refused to touch the harem and killed any concubines forced onto him which harmed the interests of the image dowager. The exact scene cuts off as a room full of male and female servants force medicine down, likely aphrodisiacs. This is likely the origin of the “son”. It’s no wonder the empress died quickly after childbirth.

[collapse]

The transmigration of the male and female leads has a lot of humorous interactions between them, but the situation is not easily broken by their presence. The novel is full of adversity and an almost completely hopeless fight against fate. The heavenly way even gets a little pissed off at them for resisting their scripts so hard. This makes the struggle even more difficult.

Wow it was good, but my energy felt so drained after reading it. <<less

Surprisingly good. I didn't expect author could include so much in 27 chapters. I don't pay attention to how author execute the plot (so can't say how logical it is) but overall I think it was decent. The writing was at least convincing and the narrative vivid.

I could picture out the scenes in the story while reading and author also maintained momentum, keeping my interest to the book.

I'm shocked at how much I've loved this and it's oneself partly due to the misleading genre choices. Plus, it's not a short story despite the format (1chap here = 4 chapters elsewhere).

This story is akin to an onion with multiple layers. You think your getting something light and airy yet, as you keep peeling, you realize that it actually errs in morally gray zones.

Wang Cuihua, typical corporate drone (as she calls herself), suddenly finds herself waking up in a novel she was reading about – The Demonic Consort, a cliche villain transmigration story – as the female lead of the novel within the novel, aka, as the villain of the novel she was reading. Talk about meta!

The female lead of the novel, Xie Yong'er, and the male lead, Xiahou Bo, are destined to be together, and for our MC, who wakes up in the body of Yu Wanyin, the original female lead,... more>> are the main hurdles for her to live prosperously.

Except, YWY already knows that Xie Yong'er is a transmigrator... and apart from that, much to her surprise, even the Emperor – Xiahou Dan, brother to Xiahou Bo and the main villain in both novels – is from the same world as her.

Safe to say, I loved this book! Not only is every character well written, even the plot is intricately built, and the romance builds slowly and steadily! There's no rush, no luck or chance, or deus ex machina to conveniently drive the plot.

Emperor Dan and Yu Wanyin, clearly from a modern society, have a modern romance in a historical setting which is very refreshing to see! Romance aside, the development of the characters going from being unused to historical society, to surviving in it, to wanting to make it better since they're in a position of power to do so is also brilliantly done.

On that topic, we have some really good representation here – a trans woman unable to live her authentic self, but finding acceptance in her family and friends; a cross dressing woman who wishes to serve the country, but can only do so dressed as a man. Brilliant cast of side characters, honestly.

I can't praise the book more, except that I will urge everyone to read it! There was one twist that I did not see coming, and it really explained a lot of minute details. That elevated the story honestly.

Lastly, kudos to the translator! They've done a brilliant job!

Wow. After years of reading webnovels, I think I've found my new favorite.

Plot 4.5/5

  • The plot is so well structured and the writing flows so that every scene pulls you in. The first chapter felt a little clunky and rushed to set up the exposition, but after that events seem to unfold naturally. I appreciate that the FL and ML weren't all-knowing and that each character felt fully fleshed out with their own motivations, which drove most of the story. If I had one criticism, it felt like occasionally the passage of time within the novel was a little unclear, but it by no means impacted my enjoyment of the book overall.
  • Also, the ending was so satisfying. It was the perfect end to their story in my opinion.
ML 5/5

  • If you like slightly (or maybe more than slightly) yandere MLs than you'll love Xiahou Dan. Although sometimes he comes off a little cliche, the author does a good job of exploring his backstory and showing the reader how he came to be who he is within the story. Something I appreciate about this ML is that he fully respects the FL and watching their partnership evolve was one of the highlights of this novel.
FL 10/5

  • She's so good!!! I loved watching Wang Cuihua/Yu Wanyin grow and adapt to her new environment. Her struggles felt so real and human as she desperately tried to survive this foreign world. The author did an amazing job crafting the all characters for this story, but it really shines with our FL. She's strong, intelligent, brave, and kind, but maintains a level of relatability throughout and doesn't suddenly become a cold killing machine simply because she was transmigrated into an ancient setting. It was a joy to follow her journey, from stumbling first steps to taking the world in stride.
  • Spoiler

I also really love how when she transmigrated back to the modern world at the end, she didn't immediately brush everything off and feel right at home. After a lifetime away, she felt like an outsider and had mentally aged even though physically time stood still.

    [collapse]
Overall, this novel is a 5/5 for me, and I can't recommend it enough. Definitely give it a read if you have the time!
