Wang Cuihua, an ordinary corporate s*ave, was on her way home when she suddenly transmigrated into a web novel. There, she became Yu Wanyin, a tyrant’s concubine. As it turned out, it was Concubine Yu’s turn to serve His Majesty in bed that night.

Upon meeting the tyrant, his words and mannerisms gave Yu Wanyin a curious sense of déjà vu. After careful contemplation, she decided to sound him out.

“How are you?” she blurted out in English.

The rims of Xiahou Dan’s eyes reddened, and he fell silent.

At length, he replied, also in English, “I’m fine, and you?”

One of the best C-novel I have ever read. The number of chapters might mislead you, it's not really that short of a read. It's still comparable to a hundred chapter novel given that each chapters are long.

After watching some episodes of the Donghua, the suspense got to me. I wanted to know more. I thought it'll be a light hearted comedy but wow. The scheming, drama, deaths and twists was done well for a short novel. It's jam packed and the pacing was great. The FL and ML's friendship to budding romance didn't feel forced. They had chemistry.

Truly satisfying unique transmigation novel. I came after watching the a few episodes of donghua. I thought I could read before untill next episode released as it was funny and the chapters were a few but the novel was mesmerizing; truly blown my mind. ᕦ (ò_óˇ) ᕤ

Even though chapters started in a light hearted way but as it progressed it became heavy hearted with many twists and turns. Only extras gave little bit of nectar. Many aspect was covered in the novel. The author depicted the plots in a fascinating... more>> way.ᕙ (@°▽°@) ᕗ

The MC really had the character development. From timid with little bit harmless schemer to extraordinary empress. This journey was filled with betrayal, death, killing, love, sympathy, empathy etc. MC adopt a clam mind after ups and downs. The ML, he was another amazing character which I truly admired (read to find why). But he was really a chef's kiss. The love between MC & ML came naturally but lasted permanently. ( ◜‿◝ ) ♡ The villains were definitely not the mindless ones, they truly showed a their intelligence with their each moves. (ノ゚0゚) ノ~

Highly recommend! Don't look at its size, its really one of masterpiece!ヾ (・ω・*) ノ <<less

Starts off light hearted, straightforward, and pretty fun, and quickly changes to have all the intrigue and twists. It seems like the stereotypical character types at first, which is hilarious in of itself considering how the the novel starts off almost a parody of its own genre. As the novel progresses, the characters become more 3D and you start to understand their history, motivations, and decisions. Being a historical novel, there is a lot of grayscale, and there were definitely times when you can see the characters question themselves and... more>> what they do. It's a pretty interesting character and philosophical exploration if you wanted to think more deeply, but if you didn't it is a very fun and well-paced novel. The extras are heartbreakingly gold. <<less

This is a surprisingly amazing novel. It starts out more like a historical comedy. Somewhat light hearted and bright. It seems like a somewhat typical transmigration story.

Then as the story goes on, the mysteries get revealed like layers of an onion. Slowly, the story grows in depth and draws you more and more into this world. Highly recommend as a hidden gem

I heard this was being made into a drama so I came to check it out, but turns out I've read it before so I thought I'd leave a review.

I think it was very interesting very well written. Except for being a bit rushed in some places.

The characters were very well written especially the Fl, ML and OgFl.

... more>> The FL was very clever but not overly so while the Mls background was very mysterious and heartbreaking.

I think the writer touched on some very interesting themes that weren't normally considered in writing transmigraion novels. Most times you see an interesting well thought out idea that isn't well written but the writer really did a great job in making it interesting to read.

Kudos to the translator as well for picking this up and translating it very well. <<less

Undoubtedly one of the best CNs out there. For a 'short' novel, the two MCs were developed beautifully with a lot of depth and had the best dynamic. Side characters also held depth and had unique dynamics with each MC. The tone shift from comedy to political intrigue interspersed with tragic plot twists was done so smoothly (RIP my heart) and the politics weren't confusing and grips your attention. This novel touched my heart and will stay in my mind for a long time. But what allowed the novel to... more>> be appreciated fully was undoubtedly the coherence and high quality of the translation, kudos to Veyrithele! <<less

Glad I came upon this. It’s literally GOLD, you should dive right into it. It’s a breath of fresh air in the transmigration trope; it kept me absorbed despite the high word count per chapter. I have the same attitude as the FMC towards transmigration stories lately; I just skim through most stories nowadays. This one though, it definitely had me hooked!

The romance is not overly cheesy but perfectly conveys their deep love for each other. The same goes for the other characters’ stories, too. Personally, I skip huge chunks... more>> of text whenever the story switches to the side leads stories, but never with this one. The author managed to make each of their stories unique, albeit tragic (some of them), and by the end of the novel you’ll find that each and every character is embedded deeply into your heart.

I’d like to say that this didn’t suffer from many cliches in the genre, but maybe that’s just me being biased haha. What I think got me hooked is the comedy, the dynamic between two modern people experiencing the ancient era. It basically had me HOWLING on my seat every couple of paragraphs.

Of course, not everything is sunshine and rainbows. There are moments that would absolutely tug at your heartstrings, guaranteed to make you drop a tear or two. Heck some of the characters’ fates are tragic, but still perfectly acceptable when you look at the grand scheme of things. It just balances everything out.

Spoiler

I personally wouldn’t have minded a tragic ending for the two of them, at least in that timeline. It wouldn’t have looked forced or just put out there you know for the sake of an impactful ending. I loved the way it was written, the part where FMC ‘sacrifices’ herself to at least save MC. Not overly cheesy, just poetic, that part.

All in all, just start reading it! <<less

Wow. This novel made me feel things I haven't felt, in like, forever? Maybe my whole life. But I'm not that old, so take it with a grain of salt, or whatever.

To get to the point? This novel is phenomenal. Stunning. Perfect. Magnificent. Whatever adjective you want to use to describe a work of art that leaves you feeling the whole spectrum of emotions, from anguish to suspense, and to the fulfillment I experienced after finishing the first extra chapter.

So, why do I like this novel so much?

... more>> The Plot

The story revolves around Yu Wanyin (MC) who is originally an office worker who gets transmigrated into an alternate universe as the concubine of a Chinese emperor's harem. The emperor Xiahou Dan, turns out, is the same. Dan's position on the throne is unstable. His so called "mother" the empress dowager, and "brother", Prince Duan, both vie for power in the imperial court. Wanyin and Dan collaborate to cement the power of the emperor, bringing peace and stability to the Great Xia Dynasty. The romance evolves naturally, and was super angsty at certain moments. However, this novel maintains a good balance between the angsty and the fluffy stuff. 11/10 novel. Go read it fr

The plot is meaty and contains a lot in just 27 (+3 extras which also have quite a bit of substance too) long chapters, and even though the novel might seem comparatively short to other webnovels, that's only because the author knows when and how to write an ending. The first initial part of the story is heavily focused on political intrigue, and pivotal moments in the plot contain some action. What I found most engaging was how I was never able to know what would happen next--the author put twists in the story that I simply could not predict. The novel gives a very real and solid sense of what is on the line, and the characters don't achieve success without a struggle. But the struggle is healthily balanced out with the good, too.

The Characters

The characterization is done very well, thankfully. The main focus of most of the story is political intrigue, it is very important for the quality of the characters to shine through. To me, that is the sign of a well written and realistic character is when you end up realized you care about the characters without realized when you began to care. They all feel real and alive, with each having their own backstory, personality, goals, and nuances in their relationship with one another. This is not for a few of the characters, but rather, the whole cast. The author does not neglect any of them, so if you're looking for a well written cast then look no further.

The main villains are also written well, if a bit cliche. However, I believe there is no inherent fault in writing cliched characters or plot. It is only when authors get lazy and use these cliches to carry their story, without focusing on the fundamental process of characterization and building the characters' motivations and personalities properly. Without a doubt, Prince Duan is an example of a well written cliche. He is a ruthless, manipulative, and unfeeling budding tyrant who you can help but feel is a sleaze and dislike intensely. His whole personality just gave me the ick and made me feel really uncomfortable, especially in his interactions with the MC. He uses people as tools and "discards" anyone who he believes no longer serves a purpose. To him, the ends justify the means. The empress dowager, who is like a secondary villain, is honestly just a terrible parent. Her motivations are very clear--all she wants is power and authority. She has abandoned everything else in foolish pursuit of this end goal, one that has no end.

The Romance

In the end, this novel is a romance novel. Focused on Yu Wanyin and Xiahou Dan, their relationship gradually evolves throughout the story, perhaps as a consequence to their circumstance which forces them to rely on each other, or perhaps because their love was truly meant to be. In my opinion, it seems to be both.

Some of the most emotionally evocative moments in the story revolve around their relationship, and the author uses this as a tool very well. The climaxes of the plot, which revolve around their relationship, are so worth the read when you get to it. The way the conflict resolves is extremely satisfying--the end results in webnovels often may seem like dues ex machina or unrealistic plot armor, but I found that this novel counters this effect by properly building up to said ending.

The romance is what I picture real love to be. Wanyin and Dan love each other so much, and to them, their presence is joy unto itself. I refrain from leaving any spoilers, but their love is so brilliantly encapsulated in the last few novels of the story, that I can't imagine the author could have done a better job. Even though you're not with them, and even though they must have experienced so many memories unknown from the prying eyes of the reader in their own little world, I was simply able to imagine all the things they did together. I was able to envision the joy they experienced while in each others company, doing daily mundane things such as drinking tea together next to a budding tree sapling, or relaxing together in a hot spring with hardly a worry in mind.

"Spring brought flowers, autumn the mountain moon, summer the flow of fireflies by the lake, and winter the warmth of nights by the fireplace. Their long list of wishes was entirely fulfilled, leaving no regrets."

-Extra 1: Why We Must Have Known Each Other to Meet

Grammar and Syntax

Mainly, this is just from the translator. Veyrithele does a really good job with the phrasing and flow of the novel, making this a very good translation where you aren't s**ked out of immersion due to poor grammar or word choices. Occasionally, there are some name errors and misplaced spaces, but it didn't bother me enough for me to even feel annoyed about it.

Kudos to the translator, who did such a good job in translating this novel to English. Very satisfied.

And, thank you to the author for writing something like this. I really liked it.

TLDR: GO READ IT! <<less

I'm just adding this in here to remind myself that this book was very good. All the other reviewers have summed it up very well so I'll keep this short.

The FL, ML, side characters, the story, it was all very well done. The balance of suspense and humour, the relatability, all made this novel so compelling.

Highly recommend!

When I read another review writing about “4 dimensional characters” before reading the novel I laughed it off, considering the synopsis and standard transmigration trope. I started to read and... THEY INDEED ARE 4 Dimensional CHARACTERS!

and not only the main characters, the background ones are excellent too. I would dare to say it’s one of the few novels where 5-6 scholars who help the leads feel like real people with their own distinct personalities

Spoiler

BTW Erlan’s crush was so bittersweet. But the Le guy, omg hilarious

[collapse]

If I would use one word to describe the novel: suspense.

you’ll find yourself constantly on the edge wondering where lies the truth between those seemingly endless lies.

the chemistry between characters is on point.

if I were to criticize (which would be a nitpicking at its highest) I would say there are next minor story points that seemed weak compared to the rest of the story (in another setting it might be even a strong point — it just felt a little off in the brutally ruthless world they got into). If you considering whether to read the novel or not - READ YOU WON’T REGRET. The things above are just me being grumpy before reading the extras. Maybe something would be revealed there

Spoiler

1. As in any other transmigrator story the question “why are they here?” is kinda meh. Like really? I couldn’t quite get the same real feeling like from the rest of the novel. Reasoning seemed a little weak to me. Again: it’s not weak if we consider the genre as a whole, but I think I would just preferred it to be unanswered.

2. A’bai and his master’s help. Looking back it might not be as great as the impression I got from it, but... Following the point above A’bai’s and his motivation were not that clear to me.

3. the ending

everything IS great, but literally the 26th chapter was kinda rushed. Too much suspense for nothing, the half-betrayal and so on. Comparing to the rest of the novel it felt as coincidence, like “wow they got lucky”, which was underwhelming. But I digress

4. The son

Haha, I got a strong feeling that he was the only 2d person and his actions were guided by the author’s desire to discard him silently. Give a reader moral leverage to not care about the child. Well, understandable on one hand, but it was really “okay I see how he’s gonna end” moment for me

Looking at all these reviews makes me think... Did I read it ? Lol. There are so many positive reviews and they're all saying like this is the best transmigration novel. Maybe it's because they've never read better? Because I think the translation is very good, but I do think the novel is subpar. I've read better like a lot better. I think subverting the concept is interesting and I think having multiple people who are not from the world or from different areas transmigrating is interesting. I can't say... more>> I've read a book that has done exactly the same thing, but I don't even think this book executed it that well. Think it's interesting. I really appreciate the book for being open-minded about like I guess LGBTQ but that's only from the brief chapters I've read. To be fair, I have dropped it. I just think it's a bit boring. Reads really boring. I think the execution is not there. Like not enough detail to set the scene nor not enough detail to set up thinking nor not enough detail to just feel like a smooth transition throughout the narrative. Or even within a chapter.

I think it reads like: okay dialogue... Thought line... Description sentence or two of someone doing something... Dialogue... Dialogue.... thought.

They don't really set it up. It's all supposed to be a "mystery" But it's just not well written. In my opinion. I've read tons better. So I don't know maybe everyone else has not read other better books which is a shame but it's just not that amazing to me. So personally I find it boring and easy to lose attention because the details are barely there. Maybe the political intrigue is there but I actually emotionally feel nothing. Because there's no detail so I emotionally don't feel afraid and I don't feel afraid and I don't feel scared. And I'm supposed to feel that because there's mystery there's like I'm going to die there's like factors I don't know that we're trying to save a country with an empty treasury. I'm not afraid of anybody here. Because I don't think any of the actual characters that are in here are afraid of anybody. And it doesn't help that the writing is not detailed. There is no emotional setup in my opinion. At all. Or it's not impactful to me. I don't understand the other reviews but they did read the whole thing so I'm sure it's great. I think if you have not read better, you'll probably like this a lot. But if you have read better you'll just think oh it could have been better. Lol <<less

Just read it!!

It's like one of the best short story, or maybe it's the best one.

The title mislead me into thinking this would be funny and lighthearted story. Well, I never knew I could be so wrong the story was so good! If this is food, I would think that this is a luxury fancy dinner at 5 star michelin restaurant.

... more>> All of the characters felt so real. I really recommend anyone who already read so many transmigration stories to read it. Guarantee you wouldn't regret it!!

I just watch the donghua, and there's slightly difference between the donghua and the original novel. Some made me more realized how great the novel was, some details that made more impact.
Spoiler

in the novel the 6 scholars that got recruited by our FL and ML were stranger from each other, compared to the donghua that shown that they were friends. But, I thought that the novel made the impact and the theme of the story more. Because when some of them died, they were not even know what kind of person they were. They just knew they were in the same boat with them (literally and metaphorically) but not even close enough to even knew what food they liked, that they got so depressed in front of their tomb because they didn't even knew what to offer. But, I guess they want to make the donghua more lightheart conpared to the novel which is slightly dark amd depressing

This is undoubtedly the best historical & transmigration novel I've ever read.

Reading this novel is like a journey, the whole novel is intriguing and captivating. At some intense moments I found myself holding my breath lol.

Now this is what I call a brainy couple. Not only smart, they are meticulous and cautious. Unfortunately, so is the villain!

It's also more realistic in terms of not all good people ending well, not everything turns perfect, and the main characters aren't your saintly holy mother.

The translation is great, neat and consistent, very enjoyable to read.

Very very good novel, I'd say it perfectly matches what I look for in a novel: all main characters are smart, with a distinct personality, the secondary characters enrich the story, the plot is well woven with a nice plot twist that I didn't see coming, slow and believeable progression of the romatic relationship, many moments of subtle comedy and a satisfying ending.

I mostly liked how the author, especially in the first half of novel, enjoyed subverting the typical scenes of a palace intrigue novel making me laugh geniunely. For... more>> example: the classic scene of a group of jealous concubines who gang upon the MC and start insulting her. The Emperor appears out of nowhere and, instead of wasting time listening to the false-flattering concubines, directly order the guards to kill a couple of them and move on with the plot.

I have just one minor complaint, I think the ending of the villain was too cruel. He wasn't evil just for the sake of being evil, he was perhaps a little too narcissistic but had understandable reasons to hate the ML. Considering how the protagonists come from the modern society, I would have expected a bit of mercy. <<less
