it was good. It was really good. I cried so much. The despair, the grief, and in the midst of everything, the love for humanity and the hope for a better future and the dedication to persevere in the face of overwhelming fear. Identity mystery, teaching, a lot of personal growth, and a lot of what it means to love someone so much you'll sacrifice your existence for their dream. 100/10

Not your typically academy professor fiction... this one shows much more premise than the typical ones. Why? Simply, emotions and identity.

Imagine our MC, a wanderer, who has to upheld the Hero’s image in order to give hope amidst the prevailing demonic invasion. What makes this novel awesome... it’s a doppler, who aims to understand humans and act as one. Only two persons know his identify, one his role-model who’s dead unbeknownst by many, except the other person, who understands his undertaking in paving way for future heroes. Thus, he becoming... more>> an awesome academy professor.

Definitely looking forward for the story and more shapeshifting... his other faces. <<less

I love it!

I think this is the first novel that really made me 'miss' a character that died in prologue. I kinda want the author to pull a deus-ex-machina just for him QAQ. The guy was a real hero.

Also I'd disagree with Dg2's review. Only at chapter 3 and calls MC doormat lol. The Emperor was harsh at worst, and this was fueled by the fact the MC was replacing a recently dead friend of hers. Imagine? You're friend, savior, and maybe more, just died and someone is gonna wear... more>> their face and you have to swallow it down for the good of humanity. Eh, I'd be having attitude as well.

MC is kinda bland though imo, but I could stick that to him being a doppelganger and had no fixed personality. He is mimicking the dead hero now and more permanently (?), and we can see him grow as a person along the way. Finding out why he even bothers putting out the farce of being someone else.

Other characters, especially the kids, are all interesting, too. They got their motivations and baggages that the hero, as their teacher, will be guiding with.

Overall I would recommend this novel! <<less

A f*cking masterpiece. Not a lot of stories can make me feel something for the characters, especially one that dies immediately in the prologue, but this one does.

The romance tag, by the way, does not really apply to the MC. Yes, there are crushes on him (no reciprocation), but to be honest, it's not that important and it's not the main focus of the relationships between the characters, which is more akin to comradeship. It applies mostly to the students with each other, and in a well written manner, not... more>> like other action novels with romance where the romance suddenly makes characters feel one dimensional.

A lot of it is very bittersweet because the hero is dead, but also heartwarming. It's a great mesh of professor life, war action, and mystery because as we go along in the story,

The story really focuses on the dead hero a lot as well, like

In ch 165, the MC is put in some dreamscape that shows his fantasy where the hero survived and they lived in a peaceful world together with no Demon King or demons, as professors. That chapter was absolutely soul crushing.

And in chapter 322, where the doppleganger MC gets to hear Ted's words to him from the past, because he was looking at a memory of Ted, just before they both go to fight the demon king (in the past and in the present). I've never wanted a character to be alive again like Ted, even though he died in the very beginning.

Also some incredibly emotional moments between each of the characters, like in ch 185. No character is not fleshed out, especially the students, and there is real tension in the battles because there are high stakes that come with them, especially around ch 240+, where everything literally overhauls. Around that point, the academy genre becomes more of a war genre, and while usually I don't enjoy war focused stories that much, in the context of this story, it was very necessary and well done, and not boring at all because of the stakes.

And no, the MC is not simply a copy of the hero. In fact,

He differs from the hero in many ways, and aims to become stronger than him. Around 180 (?) he creates his own techniques, and around c260 he basically sheds the disguise and starts acting as himself, becoming a "second hero", rather than the first one. And he discovers more about humanity and the history behind everything than the first hero, who had not even come close to that.

The proofreader's notes are hilarious too. If you're reading this review, I love your little notes.

As for the ending:

The tragedy tag is no joke. The doppleganger hero dies in the end, but everyone else pretty much survives, and MC defeats the demon king. The side stories really pull everything together. While I'm a little disappointed that he dies after everything and doesn't get to really feel the rewards of his actions, even after the people themselves basically cursed him before he saved them, I guess it's also extremely fitting for this story. The heroes, at least in this story, never live to see the rewards of their story. Not Ted, nor the MC. But they did their duty anyway, and I'm at least satisfied with that.

Edit: I read the side stories. Eyy MC is going to be revived, but only after awhile. So no MC death after all, and the revival does make sense in the context of the story. His death in the first place was because of Zero, but his revival was also because of Zero, since he was actually nice enough to set requirements for that revival part.... requirements that the MC made through sacrifice. Even better ending imo, I always thought his death because of Zero was a little unfair to the MC before the side stories.

I knew I should've taken the tags literally.

This is just another academy professor fic.... even with the interesting twist, I fail to rekindle any excitement I had at first.

Anyway the MC is a doppler and the first girl he meets basically uses him as a doormat. So with a MC who refuses to grow a backbone and played second fiddle to the hero his whole life, I really can't see this as anything else but another generic KN. But this time with a ML as a beta JP MC.

Shows some promise.

the gritty world is both under described as well as under utilized right now, which is fine. we are essentially starting the story in the second maybe third book of the story.

the main character already grew to immense skill and fought the ultimate bad guy to a stand still, then was assassinated. our NEW main character is a doppelganger posing as that person, rediscovering his stolen form's skills and developing/teaching new warriors/heroes for the war.

its both another dumb academy story, and the mid way point in a massive... more>> war story. we'll see how it continues to develop, but I'm liking it right now.

*I will admit though... there is a suspicious amount of female characters.... this VERY EASILY could turn into another bland overpowered main character with a thousand woman army of empty vessel heroines.... <<less

Pretty good story, setting, and characters. MC is a doppelgänger, but honestly shouldn’t be considered one after he gets a special ability that lets him mimic people’s abilities without having to turn into them, ruining the appeal of a doppelgänger altogether. It’s just another skill copying MC, if anything.

This one has my eye peeled every day I check to see if its updated haha.

The protag not being human I think is a interesting difference between many other stories, and it being nested in this academy setting shortly after the intro is a fun sort of way to apply an added emotional element of alienation to the teacher. It makes the compassion feel just a little more impactful.

I think this could be a real sweat heart of a story, its got a lot of promise, but you never know!

Right... more>> now its singing a little too close to 'can do no wrong' and all, but we've seen so many different examples of heroic figures failing in the story so far, that I can't help but enjoy it as a sense of foreboding.

We'll see if it actually happens or if its a rug pulled out from us ha! <<less

I've finished the main story and now just reading the extra chapters/epilogue.

Overall, I'm in agreement with the high majority of the reviews. This is not the typical instant gratification novels that are mostly populating the reading list of most readers nowadays. Give it a try.

(INCOMING RANT!!!)

I decided to drop it at chapter 71.

The main character is not...

Little things kept happening which pushed me to drop the whole novel. One would have to be the massive flashbacks/time skips. When I get invested into let's say a chapter then a bracket is placed at the bottom and this is what it says "A little while ago" or "Back in time" and let's also say the content that was in that chapter was a fight about to kind of start or not yet there... more>> but something is happening: Obviously I'm getting excited something is finally happening then it goes poof, it all goes down the drain. There was no reason for that flashback. At least I don't see the reason for it.

It might be anticipation the author was looking for but this also happens when nothing remotely interesting is going on. I would be fine if it happened here and there but for that to finally be the straw that broke the camel's back you'll have to understand how often it was happening.

The last thing would have to be the main character. I don't know how to describe him at this point. He was just there.

I already knew this was an academy novel, I wasn't mad about it. I actually was intrigued, I've read tons of novels where the setting takes place in an academy so one more wouldn't hurt. This certainly didn't. The issue was the doppelgänger itself after he's a professor at the academy. I loved his classes, the way he teaches the kids. The lengths he goes through to be able to impart any knowledge he had to them. It's admirable even but that's all he offers or should I say look forward to?

His fights are a whole nother dissatisfaction. Don't even get me wrong, I'm not looking for an op main character.

But I can't even feel proud of the mc? Be hyped about him? It might seem like a childish reason. No it is. There was nothing else I could look forward to in this story. I would've been fine if the whole book only covered his day to day as a professor, what he teaches them, what did they learn? What materials did you procure? I'll be fine with that.

This story is rooted in adventures.

His goal is to save humanity. Have people who could take his place if he one day leaves. He's fighting demons for goodness sake.

But 70 chapters and nothing of the sort? That I can even have a sliver of promise or hope about? Or excitement? For him alone, I should be proud, shouldn't I?

I wanna brag about the main character, I'm reading it because he's a main character in his story. So show me something?

I'm sure continuing forth I would find that but I simply can't anymore. I already invested my time and getting too frustrated when I already am would just be a waste of breath. It's such a bummer cause this drew me in so immensely. At first I didn't want to start it because there was a romance tag previously if I remember correctly but then it got removed it seems. I found out there's no romance involving the MC.

That's pretty much it. One comment below made me read it. Don't get me wrong. I was intrigued at first when I was reading it but I couldn't continue anymore. Getting frustrated with an MC is not anything new but it seems this takes the cake.

I wanted to know more on what exactly the emperor was to the original Ted Redymer and vice versa. How is it going to unfold in the coming chapters? Especially already knowing he's a fake. I loved the relationship he had with his students especially the counseling was a nice distraction to learn about the kids more.

I kind of knew it was going to end the way it did but holy hell did that lunch me in the gut. Both the first hero and the MC really were heroes and made me feel a certain type of way. The ending got spoiled for me so I skipped to it and now I'm I'm need of recovery lol. This honestly is such a good story and recommend it to everyone. The MC has such character growth.
