“Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” -Matthew 7:14

Guomen, 過門/过门, meaning marriage in Chinese. If explained literally, it means going past the gates/door-a reference to the Bible(see above).

“Through the Strait Gates”: to me, it’s the best way to explain it.

The gate’s narrow, the road small for them.

Their past and future interwoven into a tangled, messed up web.

Thirteen years of sour and bittersweet memories. And seven years in between that washed out everything they had like water, leaving only stark, plain, throbbing dullness.

It's okay. Quite realistic with imperfect characters. Quite light, carefree and sentimental. Although, I don't know why, it felt as if there's something missing in the romance. And important conversations unhad. I had expectations of them but I think I was somehow disappointed with their turnout.

But it was the first of Priest's that I actually ended up finishing, lol.

Excellent translation too.

Guomen isn't your typical sweet novel filled with saccharine moments. It's a realistic portrayal of two very different boys falling in love with each other. To walk through the narrow door is truly too difficult, mirroring the complexities and real world problems of a homos*xual relationship.

This was a reflective work for me. I projected a lot while reading this. As someone who often finds themselves in the role of a mediator/people pleaser, I deeply related to Xu Xilin. At the same time, I worried about him and his... more>> feelings for Dou Xun because it felt like he was going through the motions, his feelings seeming surface level. (Maybe I was projecting but it invoked my own fears - the fear of just meeting expectations and trying to please others without feeling true passion and love in a relationship)

But as the story progressed, I was glad to see the Xu Xilin’s feelings deepen. It wasn't some great significant moment, but a gradual realization. It made me hopeful that maybe one day, in the course of everyday events, I too would find myself deeply in love.

What's interesting about Guomen is that the characters never really had a dating phase. Due to circumstances, they became family before anything else. Unlike other couples who ease into living together after spending time on dates and trips, these two created their own world in their home. This unique situation added both strength and strain to their relationship.

The novel touches on the difficulties of balancing individual needs with relationship demands. It explores themes of compromise, devotion, and the struggle to maintain one's identity while creating a shared world. These universal themes resonate deeply, reminding us that deep down, we all know the major fault lines of any relationship we're in.

In the end, Guomen left me feeling not necessarily tearful, but deeply reflective. It's a story that stays with you, prompting thoughts about youth, love, society and the people you meet in the journey called life. <<less

What killed me was that many times could I deeply understand what they felt, for moments it was soul turning. So many of the specific and unique yet universal feelings are involved, so to experience it all again I have no regrets that I read this (despite feeling as though everything else in the story meant nothing to me).

Characters individually and their relationships with each other were authentic. There were all sorts problems you could easily see others in real life having. It was to an extent you would normally... more>> see in stories and naturally expect. For most. The one that really stood out was, of course, the main characters.

Dou Xun and Xu Xilin are both different, seemingly in all traits. I was really looking forward to how they would come together, and my expectations for that process has been fulfilled. I had a rough idea of how things would play out into trouble, they went as I thought. The specific circumstances I could never guess and I find that Priest explained well with those life situations.

However, I wasn't as sure how Priest would resume afterwards. In the end, there were inexplicit factors that explained more deeply into how things got to be resolved between the two. You could really only understand if you've experienced yourself. But I think to be able to personally relate as a person myself was what made the portrayal and experience especially humane.

It's ironic to call it humane. There's the offensive comment made towards Filipinos. Many are surprised, and I can understand. But the Filipino maids are something common and normalized in China's culture, and Priest seems to have the tendency to think more of a group / universal sort of point of view. Seeing her adapt that prejudiced view that's so common in her own nation isn't surprising. But this isn't defend her. It's that everyone's gonna have their flaws, whether or not you should to continue consuming her work should be totally on what you feel would be best for your own good. But seeing so many people surprised, I encourage you think more about the author when consuming their works <<less

this novel. Yes I have my own opinion about it. That's why I decided not to give any stars.

i do agree with the fact that this novel is such a beautiful novel about the character growth of 2 youthful teenagers. It's a slice of life, coming of age, romance novel with a great plot and flow but also undeniably well written characters.

but, I was really surprised to see the racist comments that priest wrote. I am not here to justify it. It is wrong and it is offensive to many... more>> people.

i admit that I love her works. And I truly enjoy them. But I need explanations for this one please

this novel could've been such a good novel with high ratings even without the racist part. I would've rate it 5 stars <<less

First of all, in the 1st chapter, I felt it is a very pleasant read everything appeared good. I was impressed with the author’s imagery and wonderful word explanation. However, from the flashback, I was disappointed with the writer's character explanation and character-specification. Q: Who is ML & Who is MC. I ignored it till 27 chapters and thought didn't matter as long the story reveals that but till the 38th chapters that are half of the story I was unable to identify the order of the character. It is... more>> a true priest is a good writer but also fails to the character-revealing to the readers and one of the such is me.

Secondly, I also dropped the previous novel Guardian, because I felt the characters were puzzling, and it left me with bluffed. It could be only a problem of mine anyway for me I need to understand the character to delve into the story. So I'm disappointed.

I hope the author could at least specify the ML & MC so it helps baka readers like me to get the idea of who is the leading character. <<less
