The synopsis is kinda misleading, at least for me who got too excited because this is a danmei that has emphasis with nationalism, something not usually touched not only in Chinese danmei but also with Japanese BL. Nevertheless, the meticulous writing of the author by integrating facts about China and different places during that period, up to events reaching Cultural Revolution (if I'm not mistaken), will bring its readers to a rather realistic story of the characters as if travelling through time in China. The romance may be kind of... more>> dragging,

with the shou/uke getting annoying at times, the gong/seme makes up for it with his character development.

Definitely a good read, especially if you want a danmei with a touch of reality and history. <<less

When I say, ''I think about this almost on a daily basis.'' I do mean it. I have never been hurt by something this much, to the point of getting goosebumps on my skin evertime I reminiscence. This novel physically hurt me; my heart ached for hours. My husband tried to console me, but I cried even harder for reasons I won't reveal to avoid spoiling the novel. If I were to summarize it in one word, it would be bittersweet. This novel will effect you deeply; you will laugh,... more>> cry, feel their desperation, their frustrations and their lust... It's all so real, so raw. I've read the prequel before thinking I was just in for a good smut, which was, by the way, one of the best in my opinion. Lo and behold, it was more than good smut; it was amazing, which led me to this one. They are stand-alone stories, but let me tell you, if you read ''Living to Suffer'' before this one, the little details will just make you wail even louder. All in all, this novel is really a masterpiece; it transcends the danmei genre. If you are okay with crying shamelessly, go ahead, don't even think for a moment, and read it. <<less

Rarely do you see a novel that tells you what happens after "happily every after". This novel (if you also count the prequel), takes you from a tragic past life, to an initially controversial romance which became one of the greatest love stories I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Though their lives were filled with so much peril, it gave off such peace because of their great love for each other. I'd say the title is wrong, because even death couldn't take them away from each other

5 stars.! All the stars!! Waterworks. I’ve never cried this much with a book. I’m still crying when writing this. It’s a beautiful story throughout difficult historical times. It was very interesting to learn more about the history of China, and frequently I would catch myself reading about the historical happenings cited in the book

If you're looking for angst with hints of historic tragedies and complications in relationship- with a HE this is recommended for you.

5/5 would recommend. Especially if you're just looking for a novel to bawl your eyes off into. Although tragic in its theme it's a HE and the conflicts are resolved well in the ending. It's not rushed and quite well paced by the end. Initially it took a while for the relationship to develop, but once it did they quickly resolved they're complications and end up together.

This story could... more>> be read in one sitting and its a very good read. This is highly highly recommended for people who are looking for angst that isn't a slow burn. The story is filled to the brim with angst, with a sprinkle of fluff by the end. This is great for readers looking for angsty short bl novels with a HE for both the MC and ML.

And also- the smut is great. So if you're looking for angst+smut, this is super recommended for you. <<less

I always want to read it but put it behind my mind. Maybe bcuz the the novel cover. The novel is best I have read. I have no idea who rating this novel 1 star. They probably did not read it. The novel like this love at first sight, stalker, straight men, enjoying each other, and old married couple. If the novel isn't your cup of tea of straight forward detail s*x scene; don't read it. The author know it stuff. But... yeah really mostly s*x scene in middle of... more>> the story line. Later it got better. I only wish the story tell more about character personality. <<less

This is my first time I'm giving review on a novel.

This novel is really tear jerking and I don't even know how to explain in words. The MC and ML relationship are so deep that I've never seen in any other novel. Do not hesitate to read, you'll be missing it. It's a HE so don't worry, it's rather the way both MC and ML devote to each other that makes this novel so beautiful yet painful at the same time... Don't know how many times I've cried while reading... more>> this.. <<less

Ahhh! I read this sequel after 2 year wish had read it before. It was so good & realistic that it couldn't be more than that!! Loved it. It was a long time, I felt this much satisfaction after finishing a novel. Even though it HE it gave a bittersweet after taste but in a good way. The prequel was also good but this one is Best! Must mention both had outstanding smut!!! ( ꈍᴗꈍ) Loved both MC & ML. MC had a frank personality but when it's time for... more>> something he wanted to do, he was so stubborn! ML was amazingly calculative & decisive. But he had a great character development, which shows love truly can change someone. (*^3^) /~♡

I thought it would be some cliche story where s*umbag ML would hurt MC emotionally after making him for him, then after MC suffered great would leave ML, & he would regret bla bla bla! And I'm glad I'm proven wrong.୧| ͡ᵔ ﹏ ͡ᵔ |୨

If you had heartache after finishing prequel this one will thoroughly heal and soothe you! ♡ (˃͈ દ ˂͈ ༶ ) <<less

Words can't express how much I love this story. It's amazing.

The characters they're real, they feel, they act like real people, they struggle and make mistakes, they're insecure and vulnerable. Character growth throughout the entire story is brilliantly done. Shen Liangsheng at the beginning is a scummy guy and even if we know why he turned out to be like that we can't really support his actions but we take this journey with him and see how love changes him, how he's oblivious at first and then denying it only... more>> to come to accept his own feelings and become a better person to be with the man he loves, finally opening up to him completely. It's honestly inspiring.

Just like in their previous lives they suffer immensely and go through many, many difficulties but this time around they have each other.

I never cried over happy endings and I didn't cry reading Living to Suffer but I sobbed at the last couple chapters of this novel. It really touched my soul. A short story like this being able to convey what many 200 chapters long novels can't.

And I want to image that after the ending

Spoiler

They'll reincarnate again in another world and will live a happy care free life together like they've always wanted since they deserve it and they worked so hard for it. When at the very end they walk towards each other wearing ancient robes I want to imagine it's a sign that they finally atoned for the mistakes of their past lifes and their future incarnations will all be peaceful.

I dont have words, this story is like those classical literature that I read in school. Patriotism and love both co-exist. I won’t lie, I wish I had enough money to make a movie for this. And not just a simple small budget movie, a full movie with good actors, beautiful sets, dramatics, everything

This novel wrecked me. Such a great body of work, I can’t believe it was only 27 chapters. Honestly, I don’t think I could read it again because it made me too emotional even though it was a HE. The ending becomes bittersweet because we’re seeing what happens after the “happily ever after” and see them age. It’s just really emotional to witness.

This felt so real, so so real. Before they got to the flood part it still felt like a novel but after that I felt like I was living a real life alongside them.

If I saw some of the places referenced in this novel irl right now I would probably just break down in tears. I hurt for Tientsin.

Every-time I read a novel like this one it feels like I’m living a other other life and when it ends I feel like a part of me has died.

I was looking for some angst novels and I noticed I still haven't rated or gave a review on this after a year or so. I remembered how devastated I felt after reading the Prequel novel and read this Sequel to ease my grief. Boiiii how heartbroken I was while reflecting on life. It was a bittersweet story of two limetimes, two souls. Ugh. I felt like crying and getting depressed just recalling the events here. Anyway, it's a highly recommended and well-done novel!

P.S.: Better read Living to Suffer before... more>> starting this novel. <<less

This book is good, very good. I usually read BL just for fun, I don't expect top notch writing or something deep. But this one hit deep. It's not your typical light bl novel, it is a real "Novel". This should be published as a real book. I've learned so many things about chinese history from this single book. It's like reading a real story based on real life events. It's sequel is "Living to suffer", but this 2 stories are so different. "Living to suffer" is fictional ancient... more>> theme but this sequel was very realistic. But both stories are written beautifully and bittersweet. I wouldn't read this story again, (like I don't want to watch Grave of fireflies again even tho it's one of the best WW2 stories) It might be HE but also kinda sad. Where they really happy, is it really happy life and happy ending? I mean they are still together, right... They are victims of their time and surrounding.

I look forward to this author. Sadly there are still only this 2 books from this author? I think she could become mainstream instead of sitting in "danmei" corner of literature. <<less

Beautiful story. Second time reading it and it is still as heart-rending as ever. I wished it never ended but I also know all good stories must come to an end.

I haven't written a review for a book in the longest time, but I had to for this. If your conflicted on whether you should read it or not you definitely should, the prequel living to suffer made me sad with how they couldn't be together but for this they could experience growing old together and go through lots of challenges together. I hated shen Liangsheng in the beginning of the book with how he treated ch'in ching feelings but he had his redemption arc.

The story is honestly so bitter... more>> sweet, the way the author infuses poetry to the story also adds to it's appeal.

It's deserves high rating and I definitely recommend it as your next read. <<less

A beautiful but bittersweet story set during a time of upheaval in China about a schoolteacher and a rich young master. Read the prequel “Living to Suffer” first if you want to understand all the references in this story. The story is only 27 chapters but the story will suck you in and take you for an emotional ride. Like the prequel, be prepared with tissues.

Translator does a fantastic job especially with providing links to the cultural and historic references in the story. This is truly an unforgettable story.

No. Death do not do them part. They together till the end. Their ending is beautifullly written.

Through story, I hate Shen Liangshen domineering personality. He has record of failed Chi'n Ching before (prequel novel). I also blaming Chi'n Ching submissive behaviour. He's the type liking to be prisoned cause the matter of feeling. Good thing Liangshen change his behaviour as he acknowledge his feeling. Good thing Chi'n Ching fall for that man.

At the end,

Now, when I say this, I speak for both the prequel and TDDUP-

I haven't read a book so investing and so incredibly wrecking yet gorgeously woven despite being so short.

The prose invokes in the readers a sense of dread that they cannot escape from but also ironically makes them anticipate what's to come and consume them.

I never delved into Chinese history, its legacy, or its past suffering (ignoring the little information we are fed in school), and though TDDUP is more romance and angst and less politics and history, it... more>> was thought-provoking and educating, making it a worthwhile read. I cannot praise the author enough for how incredible they were at their job, and I am at a loss trying to figure out how the translator managed to give us such a fantastic piece of work with no loss of its original essence (even if there was a loss, this book couldn't have been translated any better IMO).

This book was too hot and racy for a good portion of many chapters, which could have been replaced with some drama or plot instead, but even that was so well written that I cannot complain. But I do, in the back of my mind, wish the story was longer, not because I didn't want the book to end, but because the characters were so well written that they had the potential to have more to their names than just lovers (but that doesn't make this any less of a read).

The author knew how to stab us in the heart and heal it just to stomp on it again. They were a total sad*st but also a savior, and I want to worship them-.....

Ahem... coming back to the point, the story itself is filled with romance and more romance. So if you are here for a more dramatic plot, I still suggest you give this a shot for the experience of it (mainly because the last few chapters are a bit of a thrill when reading). I cannot for the life of me think of any plot holes that I could have possibly come across, but a book cannot exist without its drawbacks, and this one is no exception. There were parts in the story that I wished happened differently or didn't happen at all, for the sake of morality, but the story's writer is their own person and is free to express what they want, and I wouldn't read this book any other way.

The pacing of the book was a bit rough. It was by no means slow but was a bit too speedy at some places. Despite being a HE, it is still quite a tragic read, and the book should come with a 'Will lead to overuse of tissues' warning.

I would say 'it's your loss' if one decides not to give this book a go, but that's also because I am incredibly biased. <<less
