I’m up for slice of life but this one can sometime be boring some part are unnecessary dragging some got dealt with pretty fast but there are a lot of sweet and heartwarming moments

Also the lack of proof reading can diminished your reading experience. Throughout the whole novel the mixture of names are numerous not sure if it’s the author oversight or the translators 🤷‍♀️

When the Kang was first mentioned in the novel with its meaning (heated bed) that should be it but throughout the novel every time the... more>> Kang was mentioned it has to follow with its meaning we are not that forgetful 🤦‍♀️ others might not mind but I find it annoying

In my opinion the children actually carried the novel their antics are so cute and fun to read especially Wensheng he’s my MVP the most heartbreaking character I laugh and cry with him ❤️ <<less

Story was okay. Nothing much happened. It was all about their daily lives which at some point got very boring. The characters were good. Villains got dealed very fast. Overall it was okay.

#Worth reading#

Finished reading the story and honestly its very entertaining. Must admit I read the comments to see if I should start reading in the first place. Now that I finished the story I can say the following:

    1. Yes! The explanation of kang (heated bed) appearing every time its very annoying and unnecessary. If you read CN novels you know it by heart.
    1. Main plotline, mainly the ML and FL story itself its not moving at all and almost mondain. ML is taciturn but very shred, almost... more>> like a villain darkish persona to anyone but FL. Not in a bad way... He gets things done, he is very proficient in interrogation and assessing people character and intentions. They have almost no quarrels. The most interesting thing that happened to them was their reunion meeting (honestly, too funny. will laugh to tears, not going to explain why, read it! promise its worth it!!!)
        1. The beauty of the entire novel its the connections the main leads have. Brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents, friends and enemies. EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE has a story!!! In the entire novel they are the cream of the crop. Main leads are like the link in between all THEIR stories and are mostly there to support and encourage them to get over their hurdles.
        1. Honestly, It's 100% worth reading. I mean the stories!!! It's like the author checked the era general issues and assigned each character to have one. Examples being:
        • People taking advantage of reforms to settle old scores with ML family (bourgeoisie family) and made their life a living hell with approval from higher-ups
        • Family members coming back to get benefits after issues are resolved by acting pitiful
        • Training hounds to attack people by feeding them pieces of FL clothing
        • Women who went to the country side and was locked up with village man in the same room by his mother to ruin reputation
        • Man trying to hurt himself every time he has an argument with his wife to get forgiveness while his mother ab*sed and brainwashed their daughter (honestly it was disgusting to read this part as old woman is a PRO at manipulating others, not your usual mother in law, does is secretly and just ab*ses her mentally almost like a sick game of training humans to get specific reactions to verbal ques. Pretty much like dog training... Jesus, its terrible)
        • One of the topics that made my skin crawl with disgust was ABORTION. Don't worry its very satisfying how they handled it. The way people in power (mostly male) wanted to advance in position by enforcing the "one child per household" policy its absolutely disgusting. Telling a woman that is pregnant (and very happy to have the baby) that she has to abort her baby and get sterilised by the way (since they can be bundled like cabbages at the market, didn't you know, saves time, dahhh )..... GOLD...
        • And soooo many more
      5. The only thing I honestly did NOT like at all is the author's portrait of their daughter. Maybe just me who sees it that way maybe not.
      Spoiler

The author used the "genius at birth" troupe to describe how she was very smart at birth, she could walk and talk at 6 months old (just a few words don't worry, not a freak) BUT, the way it was portrait as if she can understand everything and still act like whatever she wanted its making her seem a a huge brat. Author made her able to walk and talk only to sneak into her moms room to undress her and breastfeed (maybe not big issue again, not a mom, but I would find it creepy), the way it was described as ML its VERY tired and could not even open her eyes while someone entered her room and took advantage... no thanks. No me like it!!! Also I don't know how just in her case she never sounds like a child no matter what. Somehow its like her only role in the novel was to introduce the abortion policy, she never sounded right age like her brother, she is speaking like an auntie when she scolds people, she is portrait as greedy when ML got a piece of jewellery and she immediately wanted to take it (author even mentioned she has gold, jade and precious stones, while parading a dress imported costing more than regular people salary... 6 YEARS OLD CHILD remember!!!) At the end ends up copying brothers carrier choice while being prized for knowing "psychology" because she finally wrote a book for children after being tutored by brother who wrote articles for magazines for like 9 years...

The writing wasn't that great. Reading it, it gave that feeling of a low budget CDrama — there were a lot of cringey scenes. Also, turn off your thinking brain, don't take it too seriously.
Spoiler

How did she suddenly have so many embroidered handkerchiefs and bags to sell the first time? Unless I missed it or the translation did not have it, it was not explained.

However, I'm giving it a four star rating because of the sad and emotional parts – WenSheng's and Changuang's sad scenes — heartbreaking. 😢Some of the writers insights/ life views were also on point, IMO.

The story was enjoyable, capturing the essence of a typical slice-of-life narrative with a mix of happy, sad, and mundane moments. However, the only flaw was the villain's point of view on their past life, which felt confusing and unclear.
