Transmigrated as the Princess Consort of a Fallen Nation

Qin Zheng transmigrated into the role of the Princess Consort,

but Qin Zheng, an engineer dispatched to a foreign country, didn’t get the script for a palace drama, nor did she have the chance to experience the luxurious life of a Princess Consort.

Because, the nation had perished.

A eunuch held three feet of white silk and said, “Your Highness, the city has fallen. Please leave with dignity.”

Qin Zheng: “…”

What kind of beginning was this?

In order to avoid being forced to commit su*cide, Qin Zheng had no choice but to go to the bed of her half-dead husband, the Crown Prince, and pretend to be deeply affectionate, shedding a few tears to delay time.

Emperor Chu Chengji, founder of the Great Chu Dynasty, was valiant and skilled in warfare.

He conquered the northern barbarians and drove out the southern savages, ushering in the prosperous era of Xuan Chu.

He spent his entire life in battles, without a wife or concubines.

Consequently, after his premature death, only a young scion from a collateral branch was selected to succeed him.

He departed during the peak of his prosperous reign, only to open his eyes and find himself at the time of his nation’s demise!

He was reincarnated as the current Crown Prince, his own nephew of many generations.

Learning that the territory he had opened up in the past was directly lost, the Emperor of the founding dynasty couldn’t help but laugh in exasperation.

How useless were these descendants?

Back then, he could establish this long-standing empire single-handedly, and today, he could rebuild it!

As for this stunningly beautiful Princess Consort, who cried so pitifully in front of him, the Emperor of the founding dynasty was extremely disdainful:

“Women would only hinder his speed of restoration!”

Later, the Emperor of the founding dynasty would knock on the door of the Pepper Room every night and ask, “Azhen, can I come back to sleep?”

Pretty standard fare for this type of thing---modern female and her outstanding ancient partner hold up the sky together---but it has the advantage of being relatively short. Nothing very much stands out: empire building clearly takes on a front seat vis-à-vis romantic narrative or character development and the comedy makes a retreat pretty early on; even the empire building is treated rather lightly with power politics and military affairs discussed rather vaguely on the whole---logistical aspects such as irrigation and flood-plane management make a stronger impression than the battle tactics... more>> or the romantic affairs of the secondary characters. The author also has too much affection for the main male antagonist-cum-second-male-lead which means we have to read more of his 'anguished regretful thoughts' (moping) than I had patience for. Nonetheless it never quite becomes outright annoying and we are not forced to deal with too many poisonous female antagonists and unlikely cannon fodder etc, which attests to an abstract but real thread of compassion in the story. Possibly this was originally only meant to highlight the virtues of the female lead but frankly the central focus of the story diverts from the leads for such a length of time towards the climax that the effect remains relatively positive. <<less

Obs: translated by AI.

I don't think it's possible to give this story less than 4 stars. It's well-developed, beautifully written, and has excellent pacing. For me, Chapter 100, my favorite, cemented it as a solid 5-star story.

Have you ever read stories referencing fallen empires and great military feats? Well, this one dives into how those events actually unfold.

Here, we see a shift in perspective as the protagonists work to rebuild their nation. The author meticulously details every step involved in consolidating a ruler's power: military strength, trustworthy ministers, intellectuals, farmers,... more>> commoners, talented individuals, and, of course, a strong partner to shoulder the burden.

One of the strengths of this romance is how the protagonists are portrayed as near-OP without actually being overpowered. Everything about their abilities is justified by their pasts or previous lives.

The legendary Emperor ML was worshiped as a god by his people. A natural unifier, he turned his country into a powerhouse, excelling as a brilliant strategist in both field battles and sieges. Raised in a Buddhist temple, he dedicated his life to leadership and duty, avoiding romantic relationships, which left the throne without an heir.

At 27, ML succumbed to illness, expecting to awaken in a new existence, as his faith taught. However, instead of finding peace or divine rebirth, he opened his eyes in a battered body amidst chaos. His last refuge lay in ruins, and the country he gave everything for was under attack. He discovered he had been reincarnated into the body of one of his descendants: the Crown Prince, who shared his fate. This descendant, rejected and threatened by his own father, was molded by hardship into a shadow of his potential.

Spoiler

The Crown Prince, feared by his immortality-obsessed father, pretended to be a libertine to seem incapable of ruling. When forced to marry, he chose Qin Sheng, a frail young woman from a noble family, but feigned interest in her sister, Qin Zheng, the dynasty's most beautiful woman, already engaged. He hoped his choice would be rejected, with Qin Sheng offered instead. However, Qin Zheng, wanting to protect her sister, accepted the marriage, breaking her engagement and inadvertently accelerating the fall of the Chu Dynasty.

The FL, our MC, is the story's sole point of view. A civil engineer specializing in bridges and roads, she also studied related fields like mechanical, fluvial, and electrical engineering. Raised in a close-knit family surrounded by supportive relatives, she learned skills like carpentry and developed a strong sense of altruism, dedicating herself to community work in remote areas. A lover of romance novels, she transmigrated into one she found filled with lamentable characters.

Upon awakening in this new world, she was greeted by a su*cide note directed at her. Though dressed elegantly, her forced escape made her abandon almost everything, including her identity. She now inhabits the body of a tragic character: a young woman who believed she sacrificed her happiness for her sister. After a broken engagement, she watched her childhood love become her country's enemy, and even in death, her body was scourged, her reputation ruined as a supposed temptress blamed for her nation's downfall.

Luckily, the ex-emperor, a man of principles, saved the woman he called his nominal wife. During their escape, they faced countless losses, injuries, and hardships but found strength in each other and their traveling companion. Neither gave up on the other, even when they had every reason to.

Reading this story, I realized that FL's transmigration and ML's reincarnation were the work of fate, bringing together two extraordinary people in one plane. They were truly made for each other.

The protagonists' relationship was calm, realistic, and devoid of unnecessary drama. From the beginning, they supported and respected each other, despite initial doubts and fears. ML admired FL's skill and care, while she valued his talent, strength, and attentiveness. Their romance was subdued, taking a backseat to the story's main focus: saving the nation.

Along the way, they encountered fascinating characters who both endured and caused significant events. One thing I loved was the author's decision to give satisfying endings to most of the secondary characters I grew to adore, even forming couples hinted at throughout the plot. Starting from Chapter 149, the narrative explores new perspectives, ensuring that all surviving characters receive a fitting conclusion. However, the author did not spare our emotions in the final stages of the war, sacrificing beloved characters as martyrs.

Some Critiques:

> Despite FL's intelligence, her obliviousness to ML's true identity was frustrating. I wanted to yell at her to realize he was NOT the Crown Prince from the book!

> The translation had several issues with titles, character names, and city names. While it didn't bother me much, it might be a turnoff for more demanding readers.

Even so, the writing is impactful, poetic, and easy to follow, compensating for these technical flaws. This story carries a tone of tragedy and perseverance, blending terrible moments with extraordinary victories into an emotionally rich narrative.

Ultimately, I loved the plot from start to finish and highly recommend it. It's a captivating work that stands out uniquely among its peers. <<less

This type of thing is actually rare (maybe not the kind ur thinking)

I'm talking about not having an immature leads who only acts and think about making readers laugh and being OP.

I'm the type of person when there's too much romance, its smooth sailing boring ship. And when there's too much logistics and dramatic external factors that doesn't really matter, then GOODBYE!

Yet somehow, this story makes me feel so balance. Its the right amount of wholesome, respectful, gentle yet stern sweetness and that dose of reality that in desperate... more>> situations, reality would show you that there will be cannibals in a war. Yeah, its short, straightforward and just the way I like it, no too much drama and s*upid schemes.

There's also just the right amount of casts with established characters and obvious motivations of why they act the way they do that moves the story along. I love the well-deserved ending of the side-characters.

Though this is still a transmigration type, the ognovel is just a novel. Its just a random text that doesn't really do much in the story, there's no indepth mention of it whatsoever. The ogleads weren't choosen by the heavens, there's no auras of fairies and immortals, there's no OPness favored by destiny. They're just 2 normal people maybe telling a story about a certain parts of their life and

somehow, that story became the ogleads' dream in their current reality.

This is a story of a troubled times. Wars is everywhere, the common people are suffering, and chaos in the world.

There's no petty backyard schemes nor palace drama. We don't have time for that.

In the beginning, FL & ML fled the city. Their main objective is to survive and protecting each other. Then the stage will get higher. There will be politics, schemes, wars, and all that mess to unify the empire. It's not just because. I like that both leads really care for the people.

Okay I'll spill the side... more>> couples. They're pretty straight forward ships & no love triangles. You may read halfway & got curious to know who will get together with whom:

A part of me truly appreciates how the author draws us into a period of chaos and war but another part of me dislikes how it takes up 80% of the story. I'll be honest, I skipped through a lot of the battle talks. I think the most difficult part for me is reading about the antagonist. A victim at the starting point and unable to extricate himself from falling into the abyss. The ML gives you that mature, yummy s*x appeal vibe. The FL blends beauty, brains, innocence, and... more>> feistiness. Ironically, I think I like the quick love stories of the side characters more. Lin Zhao and Chen Daoxi was awkward and cute. Qin Sheng and Xie Huan was quiet and charming. Lin Yao and Lu Jinyan was shy and sweet. Overall, not a bad story but be prepared to focus on war and intrigue a lot, like A LOT! <<less

This novel is quite taxing to read.

The author has a penchant for repeatedly using flowery words everytime the MC and ML so much as look at each other or even by simply walking or blinking. Its too superficial for me.

Its not like the readers are lacking any cognition that she had to kept on emphasizing how good looking and appealing the characters were. It felt like that's all they've got going for them by how the mediocre author wrote it.

A potentially great novel "ruined" (it's still pretty good) by sidetracking. I really feel put off by novels who spends the last arc of the story gathering couples. One or two would've been fine but it's like they are speedrunning every named character getting a wife/husband. The main characters romance is forced to take a back seat to the point where the ending of the novel is about two other characters entirely. It's especially annoying because there's "important" (to me I guess) things happening while the author takes his time... more>> to add a bunch of romances or the villain being sad for way too long. Personally I would've preferred to know how they built their kingdom or just them being lovey-dovey.

The villain, Shen Yanzhi, is disgusting even if he might have had a troubles past. I wish we spent less time on him even if I feel sorry for him. <<less

Heed the tags. Action and Adventure.

I entered this with a light mind, thinking this would be a sweet, pampering, face slapping, typical bg ancient drama which is liked, but oh.... Don't get me wrong, this is also a good one, very inspiring and everything is moving. Court upheaval, war, engineering, war, a bit of this, WAR.

Just that, it's not my trope. The romance part is okay, but because of everything that is happening around htem, the time between the two seems lacking. I hoenstly couldn't focus on them since there's... more>> war happenings around them. To the point that even the side character's romance are sweeter than them.

Kudos to the author though, as they managed to integrate MC's previous life to this life!! That was a good call. Though as someone who likes palace dramas, romance, the typical ancient bg trope, , , this is really is not my thing.

Though I have to say, the villain is really reallllllllyyyyyy pitiful. I almost wished he was the ML KMFDAKMFKSA anyway, the Shen siblings are really pitiful, I cried reading about them. One thing author did so well in this is fleshing out the characters, even the minor ones.

The FL is an engineer who transmigrates into the Crown Princess Consort, just as the dynasty is being overthrown. The ML is the conquering founding Emperor from 300 years ago, who transmigrates into the dying Crown Prince. Both leads have mature, caring, responsible personalities and they're good together.

Together, they escape the ruined city and slowly rebuild their kingdom from scratch. In times of turmoil, civil war, feudal warlords, foreign invasions, floods and epidemics, they fall in love. There is no smut, it's almost all fade-to-black snu snu.

It's mostly a kingdom-building plot with some romance, similar to After Being Abducted by the General, The Marquis is Innocent, etc. Because of the scale of the plot (military conquest, overthrowing a dynasty), some major points are described in broad brushstrokes (thank goodness, I'm not here for the military history). There is no room for personal betrayals/scheming, as the setting is basically two good, competent people trying to protect their country in a turbulent world. <<less

Two notes for people considering reading this novel:

1. ML is not even remotely like how he's described in the synopsis. I passed this novel over a few times because I thought the ML was going to be a tool, he's actually respectful and appreciative of FL from the beginning.

2. It takes a while for the information about ML's identity to be explicitly stated in the actual book, even though it's clearly not meant to be a spoiler since it's in the synopsis. Which is potentially super confusing, especially since ML... more>> has more than 1 name.

So going in keep in mind that ML's original identity was Chu Chengji, the founding emperor of Chu, AKA Emperor Wu Jia, and that his new identity is the current crown prince of Chu, who is also named Chu Chengji.

I really loved this book and it's characters but I will say that it's a bit hard to understand sometimes. Even if you're like me and take notes as you read.

The translation could really use someone going through to make sure the names and titles are consistent. One chapter is especially bad because it drops a LOT of important plot knowledge but uses one character's name to refer to two different important characters.

There are also a few times where the author withholds a minor piece of information (a character's actual name, the configuration of a few locations) until after you need it. <<less

Gosh I haven't read a het novel in so long I've almost forgotten how it felt lol.

This was an awesome ride. The translations weren't perfect, but they are perfectly readable and context clues help a lot.

The romance development reminded me more of the sweet western historical romance novels I used to read, but the way things progressed in the background, especially in scale, very much gave epic Chinese alt-historical drama.

There are things about it that pulled me up short, and things that I wish didn't happen, but I reminded myself... more>> that this was Josei, so really, I should have known lol <<less

Very light on the romance but what you get is so so green flag good. But this is super focused on war and the rebuilding, like super super focused. Definitely not light reading. The writing style is pretty great but the translation messes up pronouns and names and comments say it’s missing chapters but I didn’t verify and honestly didn’t really notice.

Not gonna lie, this couple's romance is one of the healthiest i've seen in a cnovel and i've been reading webnovels for close to 7 years. Reading the synopsis and the first couple of chapters, I was expecting a r*pey and violent ML. He is not particularly soft either. Nor is he kind to the FL and cruel to others. And the pacing of their romance was perfect. It's nice to see none of these usual tropes.

A lot of people say both leads are not OP and that they rely... more>> on each other. I think the ML is near perfect compared to her. Man would have reclaimed the throne without her anyway but she did make it immensely easier for him.

The FL's characterization is a bit strange. Frankly, the only modern thing about her is her engineering past. The novel needed that to explain her skills and that's all. It's really a shame. Their relationship would have been more interesting if her personality and behavior clearly showed she is not an ancient person. I also got sick of her getting shy for a mf kiss !! like girl how were you an engineer meaning you were past your early twenties and had no first kiss??? The obsession with keeping the female protagonist a virg*n even when she was a grown adult living in the 21th century, just... makes the romance boring. Calling your husband shameless for wanting to kiss you? C'mon.

The rest of the story wasn't super engaging but I like how the other characters weren't made solely to worship or hate the main characters. I don't think they suffer major setbacks though, mainly because the ML has everything under control all the time.

Overall, I will give it 4/5. This novel had me giggling because the romance was heart warming. A nice break from law school lol. <<less

6/10 honestly the lead couple is one the healthiest couple I have ever seen in cnovel, they are willing to be truthful and talk things out when things happen. No angsty sh*t here. I do find the booking getting more boring after like 40 over chapters cause it is very politic and war-related content not much relationship or romance cut also the ending was a little abrupt. The war content even if I read I dont understand... like it so complicated hence I find myself skipping through so many parts.

she was once a civil engineer. And those were the skills that were needed to improve her circumstances and the country.

I also enjoyed that

Spoiler

the female villains weren't one-note and had redemption arcs.

[collapse]

I wish the villains were written a little smarter, but the rebel / intermediate dynasty was just so ridiculously insane and 1-D caricatures.

The author could have made a much better book by cutting out 90% of the villain scenes (especially the later half) and just focused on the war.

Spoiler

The MC and ML taking over the mountain was so much more enjoyable read than dealing with the tyrant imperials. And the storyline with the 2nd ML was just so draggy and tragic and kind of overly s*upid (author had to extremely villainize him to make readers feel like giving him up is the better choice).

[collapse]

Main relationship was nice. I did feel that the author put a bit of filler, a lot of scenes were dragged out unnecessarily with repetitive lines. There was definitely 1-2 chapters where I didn't read at all and didn't miss out on any troop movements or war plot point despite skipping.

Translation was mediocre, devolved into unedited MTL/chatGPT. So so so many switched pronouns and mixed up names (eg. ML would be doing something, but translation would say it was MC doing it instead.) <<less

I loved it! Especially Shen Yanzhi! He was a s*um but a complex scum.

When the story ended, it left me wanting. The last few chapters after the war focussed on all of the side characters. Author dedicated them to pairing off all of the named characters and didn’t pay any attention to our main pair, which was a travesty because they are a really nice pair. If I had a Chu Chengji all to myself then trust me, u was not gonna come down.

Where's the comedy? And the story is so slow paced. The author describe the event of one day for several chapters, it is boring. On the other hand I even felt sorry for Shen, I am not condoning his treason but he was also quite pitiful. The nove should have tragedy tag instead of comedy.
