I transmigrated as a character in a novel.

Well, that happens.

I’ve read so many fantasy novels by now that I’m not narrow-minded enough to be shocked by something like this.

Sometimes in life, you just… end up in a novel!

Maybe regress a little!

That’s life, right? Happens to the best of us.

But why, out of all things, did I have to possess a fluffy furball picked up by a Yandere Top?!

“Elton, is neutering a cat really necessary?”

“Yes, it’s essential. It can prevent problematic behavior during mating season and is also important for their health.”

Out of nowhere, Leonard asked the question, and his aide, Elton, responded firmly.

Juwan rolled his big eyes back and forth between the two of them.

The word “neutering” sounded ominous as hell, but since he was currently playing the role of a cat, he pretended not to understand a thing.

His eyes were the very picture of innocence and purity.

“I see. Then schedule the neutering for that one.”

“WHAT?! NOOOOOO!!!!”

Faced with the imminent loss of something very precious, Juan screamed without thinking.

All eyes turned to him in shock.

Ah, I’m so screwed.

Status: c96
3.5-ish stars (with major caveat) up to ch 96: An amusing mashup of genres: a BL romance comedy transmigration-into-fantasy-novel cat-shape-shifter cat-novel. Although the setup (and, uh, many, many of the plot beats) is basically the exact same as the author's other novel set in the same universe (Possessing the Obsessive Maniac's Cotton Doll) this story manages to be entertaining in its own right—but fair warning that I'm not exaggerating when I say many things are exactly the same (hence the caveat, if I hadn't read the other novel first, I... more>> would've rated this one a bit higher). The characters are different from the other novel and the CP's relationship is slightly different, but if I had to nitpick, I'd say the characters in this novel are a little less well-developed and feel a bit shallower, if still fun to read.

(Note that for the Laidbacks translation, its status says "completed" at 96 chapters but the story is NOT complete as of the time of posting this. It very obviously stops in the middle of the story with no resolution to anything.)

(EDIT: Did some digging around and on the official Kakaopage it looks the story actually does "officially" end at chapter 96 as it is marked "Complete" right there on the page, despite it chopping off in the middle of the story with no resolution to anything. There are then 12 chapters of an "extra" story, and one AU chapter. I have not read any of them so I don't know what they involve, I hope/expect that the extras actually finish the freaking story, but as of the time of this posting, they appear to be untranslated.)

I'm guessing the protagonist's name would alternately be translated as Joo-an rather than Juan—as it is, I kept reading it as if it were Spanish, which isn't a complaint, just a funny note and it kept throwing me mentally having to correct myself that that's def not how this Korean protagonist's name is pronounced. After a short while though the story switches to calling him by his new cat-name Yellian.

But here's a big weird thing: Later on the story starts referring to Yellian as "it" rather than "him" (whether he's in cat-form or human-form), which I didn't really like, and even later started referring to Yellian as "they/them/their"—I'm totally cool with gender-neutral pronouns but it's a weird choice considering that Yellian was firmly established as a man and male in a BL novel, and there was nothing at all to ever even hint he might be nonbinary. It gets even weirder because after chapters and chapters of they/them, it switches to calling Yellian "him" for a little while, but then switches back to "it" and "itself" for a long time, and then back to "they/them". I'm not sure if this is the translator's decision or if the original text refers to Yellian in atypical terms. Except for this persistent and extremely weird oddity, the rest of the translation is fine.

If you read the author's other novel set in the same world, Possessing the Obsessive Maniac's Cotton Doll, this novel's setup and some of the plot beats are extremely similar: modern protagonist has a possibly fatal accident and wakes up in a non-human body in a fantasy world he realizes is from a toxic R18 BL novel he read in the past, and of course he ends up in the clutches of the yandere seme/gwanggong/crazy top duke who in the original story pursued, caught, and brutalized the pitiable bottom, and the protagonist can change between nonhuman and human forms eventually but doesn't know how to control it. Like in the other novel, the duke is BFFsies with the emperor. Additionally (lots of spoilers obvs for both novels) —

Spoiler

The MC also acquires a pet baby dragon that likes to bite/grab him with its mouth and cover him in saliva, and that the MC regards as his "child". The MC also gets drunk, in the process rambling on about the ML being a "mad duke" right to his face, prompting the duke to question him the next day during the MC's hangover about being called a "mad duke", during which the MC is forced to reveal that the MC's is a character in a BL novel and that the MC is a transmigrator, and the ML's reaction is to believe him and generally take it in stride rather than be shocked or outraged. Also, after getting drunk and falling asleep, the MC wakes up chained to the bed because the ML doesn't want him to run away.

Then there's also how the ML finds out that the MC is apparently slowly dying/won't survive for long, and he's torn up about it but also reluctant to tell the MC so delays telling him.

There are other smaller similarities too, but those are the big ones so far. Perhaps the author used the same outline for both novels lol.

[collapse]

The brief crossover extra from the previous novel also features as a scene in this novel, from Yellian's POV this time, though there's nothing new added or revealed, it's just the same scene.

If you haven't read the other novel, then this one will be just fine—but if you read Cotton Doll next, you'll notice how remarkably similar they are. I still found both novels entertaining in their own ways, as they're both lighthearted comedies, but I could see how some people might be bored or dislike how completely recycled the plot points are. And honestly, I liked Cotton Doll better, though idk if it's because I read it first so it was fresher compared to this recycled story.

Note that this novel has explicit smut baked into the main story, whereas with the first novel, I think the explicit stuff was limited to the extras. Legit, though, I'm 90% sure that the author also reused the same outline for first-time snusnu since it involves the exact same scene lol.

Spoiler

Wherein they do the deed and the bottom is like OMFG IT HURTS YOU'RE TOO BIG and the gong is like, my bad, let's try again next time, and the bottom is like NO WAY, I CAME THIS FAR, LET'S FINISH SO THIS PAIN ISN'T FOR NOTHING, and they finish the deed.

There's also a similar scene of snusnu aftercare involving the ML helping the MC by giving him an en*ma, which is also similarly written briefly and not particularly s*xily.

[collapse]

There are differences, of course. The MC is in the body of a cat, not a plushy, so he can still move around and such, but he has to be very careful because he can still speak like a human and is naturally inclined to, so he has to make an effort to only meow, lest he give himself away. For another, in like chapter 4 of the story after a vet examines him, the yandere top ML Leonard is informed that it's possible the injured cat his assistant rescued and brought back to the manor might be a rare/legendary feline humanoid i.e. A cat that can shift into human form, so there's a different set of tensions in play.

The comedy arises as Juan/Yellian overhears Leonard threatening to kick the cat out if it causes trouble, and so Juan/Yellian becomes determined to cause as much kitty mischief as possible in order to get himself kicked out and thereby regain his freedom. The duke, on the other hand, has no intention of actually kicking Yellian out, because possessing a rare feline humanoid could be advantageous in the future—but the duke is also something of a neat-freak and having a cat knock things off the table and claw the wallpaper is soon driving him up the wall.

The CP bickers a lot, with Leonard constantly threatening Yellian to keep him in line and Yellian meekly acquiescing only to forget a while later and start acting out again. Not to keep comparing it to the other novel, but while the MC in the other novel had a very concrete identity as a transmigrator and Korean youth, Yellian doesn't have quite that much grounding—his main focus is escaping Leonard (until they fall in love of course) but beyond that he doesn't seem to have a plan, doesn't really wonder about his circumstances (like, how/why did he transmigrate into a novel, what happened to his original body, etc), and in general although he is a sympathetic character and an entertaining one, he's not quite as fleshed out as one might hope.

After a good start, Yellian gradually becomes kind of a generic character: he pretty much seems entirely settled into this new world and doesn't seem to care about the life he left behind—and oddly, he doesn't seem to really think or care about the fact that he's a rare "feline humanoid" and can't control his ability to switch between cat and human forms. He's not curious about his new identity, doesn't make an effort to try to learn how to change at will, and mostly just wants to play with his pets and go on foodie dates with Leonard. While I didn't dislike him, I didn't particularly like him as the story went on and Yellian lost a lot of his initial spark and personality.

There's also sort of more of a direct plot involving the mystery of who tried to assassinate Leonard (as in the original novel), although it's not particularly exciting or twisty considering that there's a limited pool of suspects, and chapters go by without it being mentioned at all because the focus is on Yellian and Leonard's relationship—which isn't a negative thing per se, as their relationship is entertaining. However, there are a few loooong stretches of chapters consisting of hijinks and/or just relationship stuff (chapters of smut, going on dates at festivals that sound suspiciously modern including carnival games and getting hotteok and Dubai chocolate and coconut gelato, wtf) and/or the Mysterious Cat Disappearances Around Town But With No Real Updates Just Mentioning It's Still Happening, and the whole assassination thing is never mentioned.

So the plot pacing is uneven, but generally I was still entertained even if I did wonder wtf was up with the actual plot.

If you liked Possessing the Obsessive Maniac's Cotton Doll and want more of the same (like, f'real, more of the exact same), you'll probably enjoy this one. If you haven't read Cotton Doll, then I suggest reading that first because it's completed and largely the same/a bit better. <<less
