Zhang Xiaowan’s family had always been poor, but as she grew older, they managed to scr*pe by. Soon, she was on the verge of marriage, but the man she was engaged to had no affection for her. Despite this, she resigned herself to muddling through. She then moved to the capital, where she crossed paths with another transmigrated woman. This comparison made Zhang Xiaowan realize she had been living a depressing life. Yet, life had to go on. She had raised her younger siblings, gotten married, and started a family. What else could she do but continue living as a struggling transmigrated woman in an unforgiving era, even if her life was far from ideal?

This novel serves as the reality check of transmigration novels. The fact that it was published more than a decade ago is surprising because nowadays we have tons of transmigration novels that do not capture the underlying current in an ancient era like China especially regarding the subject of women.

But this novel was such a breath of fresh air because how true it reflected the circumstances of a woman in that era not even sparing our FL who, despite being a transmigrator, ultimately conformed to that timeline's expectation of women.

For... more>> the ML..... well he is similar to a scale machine that's all I can say. <<less

This novel is hard and depressing to read but that is because it depict a reality if transmigration to such era exist. Not a fairytale or magical at some sort and damn I love how consistent the author is, the FL is so fine and I like her the most. Just because the ML treats her better she will love him despite being a scum? Heck no! Satisfaction which I didnt know Ill get in this novel. The ML is baaadd but also a badass (in a cool way). The... more>> character development is there but since they are in ancient era and the author so realistically consistent, he is still a chauvinist and regards his wife as his possession.

Though really depressing from the start until the end. I was really thankful it ended in peace. I love and hate this novel. <<less

Hi, I'm Bambi, the translator! I read this novel in 2022, and I still, to this day, think about it. I have to be honest with you: this is an angsty read. You will cry, and you will be mad. You will hate the male lead, and you will hate this fictional world.

Zhang Xiaowan does not have rights or power in this world, like she does in our modern world. She will suffer a lot. I think it's one of the most truthful depictions of transmigration: the ache of not... more>> belonging, of being stranded in a place where you don't want to be, unable to be back home. This is, in many senses, a horror novel. One of the most important themes of the story is helplessness.

I want to translate this novel because I'm alone in this suffering with Xiaowan, and I need someone to read it too, cry with me, and scold the author with me. That's why it's annoying reading how everyone is willing to pity the male lead and be considerate of him.

Spoiler

Please don't forget he SA the female lead.

[collapse]

All reviews in favour of him are also in favour of his behavior.

Nico writes in their review: «Who are we to say whether a person deserves forgiveness for their past transgressions?» We can, everyone has a moral compass, alright? And if you can't decide whether it's wrong or bad, I would say you are favoring the action rather than condemning it.

Spoiler

Xiaowan couldn't leave him even when she wanted to, because she had no legal rights to live on her own in ancient China. It's only when he dies that she can rest in peace, literally, because although he kept her safe and her sons, he never did it gratuitously. He asked her to care for him like a son, to treat him like her husband, to serve him in bed and out of bed. He demanded complete obedience from her. Zhang Xiaowan once says that the real her (the modern her) only met Wang Yongzhao once: when she pointed an arrow at his heart. Later, the world showed her that it was a world built by men where women were treated like objects with no rights or place to speak, so she had to stay as a loyal wife to a man she would rather not marry, and was forced to marry. Meanwhile, the male lead could have concubines and chambermaids, have children with other women, go to war, or pretend to be sick when he did not want to go to war or to work. When he disliked the female lead, he threw her into a poor village and slept with other women. When they fought, he slept with other women to make her jealous (wishing to make her distraught and suffer). But when he wanted her, he made her pregnant with his child, because only then would she remain wholeheartedly on his side. Even when the pregnancy threatened her health, he did not regret it, and later even made her bear him another son. Now Zhang Xiaowan had three burdens to take care of, and couldn't bear to leave him.

[collapse]

You guys think he's pitiful? Pitiful people can be hateful, too. I dislike immensely that everyone is willing to look at the other side for the male lead, and barely anyone leaves a line of sympathy for the female lead (that's why I like reviews like Lostpasswords's, sobs). This novel is a patriarchal fantasy, and you should notice the extreme pressure exerted on the female lead to mold to the male lead's ideals so she could live a good life. Everyone says, "he changed for the better". It's better to say the heroine changed him. It fell to her to make him a good father and husband, and I bet she was tired of it.

Spoiler

We see many instances of this, like ch214, and I bet she was exhausted by the end of her life. Even in ch223, which everyone found funny, she is exhausted by his repeated questions. She has a jealous husband who punishes her, sexually and psychologically, when a suitor from her childhood sends her rabbits. It might be funny at first, but would you imagine living day after day with a paranoid, chauvinist, jealous husband like the male lead? We can see many more moments where she says and shows she's exhausted.

[collapse]

As a Chinese netizen wrote: You're so sympathetic to the man, it's a pity you weren't born with a D.

"Transmigrated into a Poor Farmer’s Daughter" is a touching and realistic story that shows the strength, sacrifice, and hope of its female lead. After being transported into a poor family’s life, she doesn’t give up. Instead, she works hard to improve not just her own future, but her whole family’s life.

What makes this story special is how true-to-life it feels. The struggles she faces—poverty, hunger, and hardship—are not sugarcoated. Yet, she stays strong, hopeful, and determined. Her willingness to sacrifice for her loved ones shows how selfless and inspiring she... more>> is.

This novel stands out because it’s not just fantasy—it feels real. It shows that even in the hardest times, a strong will and a kind heart can make a big difference. <<less

This is such an interesting novel, we have a douchebag male lead who yes eventually falls for the female lead but that doesn't magically reform him, he does change but those changes don't turn him to even a good partner let alone the normal male lead in cnovel land. The male lead here is simply a man of his times, a capable man of his time but not someone who understands the modern woman and that makes sense, gender roles have been so firmly established even in the current... more>> times let alone in those days. This author manages to make the story of our female lead compelling and if you are still living in a traditional country a lot of you might see your parent's relationship in the male and female lead. <<less

This is such a complex read that you honestly need to have a good grasp on human nature to truly understand both sides of this story's leads.

The MC is such a wake up call to the typical transmigration novels we know and love. She's truly resilient, intelligent, and talented. Most of all she was willing to endure whatever in order to survive.

I can't say the same for most of us, myself included. She did her best for her insta family, kept in line after learning about the times and ways... more>> of the world, tried to fit in, was thrown for the loop multiple times, had peace, had trouble, more perseverance, intense fear, peace again, etc. She's a G for real.

The introduction truly reminded me of MingLan's thoughts when she first noticed she transmigrated into a 6yo in ancient China but our MCs story shifts dramatically compared to MingLan.

The ML is truly the embodiment of an ancient man. And given that this is a historical novel, I'm not hating on him 100%, especially once we start seeing just how deep he needed to be scheming, and hiding his thoughts in order to protect his family which later included the MC, and kids. He truly was ruthless to everyone, especially himself. He committed a lot of mistakes, and was truly brutal in some cases; however, he started to change for the better. Who are we to say whether a person deserves forgiveness for their past transgressions? As I said in the beginning, you need a good grasp on your emotions when reading this novel, it pulls you in, and truly makes you feel bad for the most hated characters. It's wild how that happened.

Also, for some reason, instead of the ML being cringe in the later chapters by being overly jealous, and possessive of the MC, I just found him, and the situations funny. So we do have some comedic relief. <<less
