Nan Gong Xi was a top national secret agent who found herself transmigrated as a female prison guard who inherited her mother’s business.

Her father was the warden, her younger brother was a junior officer, and her mother was a retired housewife. Her family had served as minor officials in the capital city for generations.

She had no special abilities, only memories from her past life. But exceptional people will shine through effort, no matter their background.

Watch as Nan Gong Xi, now called Gong Xiao Hua, grows from a junior guard into a female general of the kingdom.

Qin Chu Yuan came from a prestigious family line, blessed with talent and looks. Outwardly gentle, he was scheming on the inside.

The one correct calculation he made in life was marrying his one and only wife, Gong Xiao Hua. She fell right into his trap.

From then on, the married Qin Chu Yuan became a devoted, doting husband catering to his wife’s every need – to the point that onlookers grew tired of their affection.

As per usual with this group, the translations toss around the names and pronouns and duplicate paragraphs -- annoying, but readable if you're willing to put up with it.

The story itself isn't great, but also not the worst. The premise is good, but execution is miserably flawed in that some of the dramatic parts and most of the climaxes are summarized.

Spoiler

The greatest crime was summarizing the climax of the coup/rebellion "arc". FL swooped in to save the day, said her piece, and then when she's to take down the rebel prince, it goes from detailed to summary. WHAT BLUE B@LL$

Later on the collapse of another kingdom's monarch that the FL indirectly causes is ALSO only summarized, like are you KIDDING?! "But this is a story for another time." Um, no tf it is NOT, you lazy a$$ author!

[collapse]

Furthermore, when there's dialogue, the only indication of who's talking is a brief introduction. The lines are not marked with a speaker's name.

On a positive note, FL's fight sequences are told in detail and not just something like "in a flurry blah blah and the enemies' weapons fell from their hands before they could blink, and then they died." There is actual action even though FL is so OP.

The woman vs. Woman drama is boring, with the villainesses being pretty one-dimensional in that they are both spoiled, beautiful girls of higher rank than FL that want to marry ML. Who are they? What do they like? What motivates them besides the ML's handsomeness? Who cares!
Spoiler

Btw when we do away with them, they'll also only get a summary cuz, again, who cares!

[collapse]

This story probably would've been better with 300-400 fleshed out chapters instead of the 180+ we get. There are so many recurring characters and so many arcs, that just over 180 chapters is not enough space/time.

It was originally a 3 from me cuz those fight scenes are grand, but all that summarizing, ESPECIALLY FOR MAJOR PLOT/ARC CLIMAXES, irritated me 'til it raised my blood pressure. 2 only. I'm so disappointed and frustrated. <<less

Having read the review that FL’s problems come from ML’s family I already had an inkling that I would dislike the story and I was right.

FL is an assassin transmigrated to ancient times and she could be badass. After all she’s great at martial arts, hardworking and has a cool calm demeanor.

However ML’s noble family looks down on her and his mother insults her and says things like “stop thinking about getting together with my son! Know your place!!!” And FL is all ??? What???? Cause FL has no feelings... more>> for ML whatsoever. All this s*upid misunderstandings make me want to hurl and so I’m not going to read till translations are complete just to read the ending. <<less

1000/5✨✨✨

Yes it is a copy paste of transmigrating assassin in ancient times starters plot, but it definitely divulges from the more common route. If you love powerful Female MC, not a damsel in distress, but still a power couple, then this is the novel for you. I really really recommend it!!

Responding to another reviewer, yeah a bunch of issues are on ML's family, it they do get resolved pretty quickly afterwards. Yes the MIL isn't the nicest characters, I personally don't like her either, she is more of Tsundere... more>> later on. She doesn't get much screen time so... And ML's sister, sister-in-law, and nephew all love her.

And our ML is an absolute gem 💎. He is always there for her, he endured so much from his grandpa (idiotic old man). He is always there to support her career. Just stick around for our Main couple and side couples.

I won't spoil it further but it is a slow burn romance T-T (more on MC's side as ML fell hard pretty early on).

The ending was a bit rushed and would've liked it if they expanded more our couples relationships, daily life etc but it is a HE. <<less

Transmigrated secret agent transmigrates into a female prison guard in ancient times. As the strongest fighter and tactician, she ascends the ranks and protects her country.

I enjoyed the FL's strong fighting ability and her OP military tactics. This novel starts strong with the FL's viewpoint, trying to adapt to the ancient era. Unfortunately, as the plot gets bigger and ... more>>

turns into continental warfare, the FL is mentioned in passing in the third person, and the ending was too rushed. It would have been great if the latter part of the story were told from the FL's viewpoint, and the author had more time to develop the characters and situation towards the end.

[collapse]

There's very little romance.
Spoiler

The ML falls for her and they have a one-sided relationship for most of the book, as she's a wooden block when it comes to romance. But it's a HE.

Transmigrated assassin is a common template, yet I still find it refreshing to see this MC climbing up step by step relying on her skills, without going out of her way to show off at every turn, keeping her eyes on the goal and living life how she wants. She has a good personality that seeks to help others in dire need without looking for benefit, doing what she can and nothing more. I liked that when suffering a setback she accepts it calmly. While she doesn't passively endure humiliation,... more>> she knows her place.

However, MC's mingling in the high circles is forced, and the romance even more so. For starters, all of MC's misfortunes that she couldn't solve were indirectly caused by ML or his family, ML goes out of his way to fix them, and his attention feeds into the cycle. The characters involved are either completely brutal in their ways towards commoners, or directly broke through all social barriers to view her as an equal... These two extremes make for very shallow qualities. I feel like the author can not make personal views and cultural views coexist, which leads to one dimensional characterization of nobles.

The last straw for me was the event that brought MC and ML together. It brought up MC's helplessness in front of the ruling class in an unpleasant way, at the same time showing the apex of the shallow characterization, while foreshadowing how much MC would show off from then on...

Spoiler

I won't spoil the climax, but it was the Princess' birthday and MC brought a gift in the form of a drawing... To be honest, if anyone really expected a commoner prison guard to bring a great gift to the Princess' coming of age, they'd be out of their minds. Like they did in the novel is 100% setting her up for a catastrophic failure, which author brushed aside by gifting MC painting skills suddenly. It left me wondering if, out of nowhere, she'd become skillful at other things.

[collapse]

Later on, the quality of the writing falls off, as if the author lost the motivation to write. Many conversations become watery, and author simply doesn't possess the skills to make MC's greatness enjoyable to watch.

Spoiler

for example, MC becomes "very knowledgeable" about medicine on the basis that the medical achievements of the time are backward, like very very backward. This is indeed a plausible explanation, but it doesn't make it any less boring.

[collapse]

Author shows good cooking scenes and the fighting scenes are passable, but other things lag behind and it shows when he tries to develop them.

There are other details that, if you want to dig up, can grind your gears, but that otherwise are irrelevant.

Spoiler

one of them being the way the martial competition rewards winners. The top 30 can be directly assigned to positions in the ministry of war, and since they're mainly ranked by strength, I'm assuming it's not a role in court, but in the military. This doesn't make much sense. To begin with, such roles are assigned based on connections and merit gained, and the higher you go, the more your intellectual qualifications, charisma as a leader and experience are needed, none of which are being adequately measured. So one cannot realistically be assigned to a role of importance, but only start slightly above a normal soldier (let's say a small commander of a 10 man or 100 man squad). Perhaps if they were a genius, they could be assigned under some general for nurturing, but those parachutes would still create dissatisfaction within the army's strict hierarchy and system. I can see this working for martial arts instructors and assassination squads, although too much of a hassle.

Another flaw is how the involved authorities use shady means to affect the top player in the competition... But this is something so important that the court gave a death order for ALL departments to participate, why do minor officials really believe they can mess with this at will? It seems like the risk is much greater than the rewards.

[collapse]

I'll finish the translated chapters but I have my doubts on whether this will be good. <<less

True rating is a 3-3.5 which I'm generously rounding up to a 4, and then extra generously giving them another star because reading this brought me a lot of enjoyment. So I hope other people can discover it too.

The ending was extremely rushed in my opinion.

The overall pacing was a bit inconsistent like in some places the story would drag, and then in other places, there would be a one sentence summary of events that happened over a 4 month period.

A lot of unresolved threads but they weren't critical to... more>> the overall plot.

The translation had some weak areas. Like occasionally the capital city would be translated as "Kyoto" which... there's no Japanese presence in the story so I figured out oh that must be the capital city mistranslated. A lot of times the gender pronouns were not correct.

I'm being extremely generous with a 5 star reading but only because I enjoyed the story, I liked the MC, the romance was just the right amount I wanted (not too much and didn't overpower the plot) and story completed in under 200 chapters as opposed to other stories going on endlessly with 900 chapters. <<less

[ I don't know about other, but I truly enjoyed reading this novel.

First of all, the FL is actually independent, highly intelligent, and best of all self-aware of her limitations. I adored her accurate and fast decision-making in the middle of crises.

Second of all, the ML has a very discerning eye for judging characters. I loved that he could like the fat FL and that she didn't have low self-esteem but rather worked hard to always improve herself.

Finally, I immediately got hooked in the story because of its fast pace.... more>> You could say that there were many fast-forward scenes, but I truly liked that the author didn't get engrossed in those arcs of the story, less the story got boring. I rather prefer the character development of the FL and learning what knowledge and insight she could offer for every situation she faced.

Highly recommended novel for those who love a strong self-reliant FL]

If you're looking for romance this isn't the novel to read. There is barely any romance and FL doesn't fight for her ML. The ending felt very rushed even though it was a "happy ending".

The main problem of the story is that it's overly tropy and it honestly feels more like setpieces linked together than a cohesive narrative. The pacing is sometimes alright, often times light speed wtf happened?

To put it in simpler terms, it feels like every detail, every convenient plot contrivance exists soley to push the story along. There's so little connecting text and fluff and just pure storytelling. It's plotpoint after plotpoint without pause.

As a result, the characters end up feeling mechanical. The execution suffers, and while I commend them breaking... more>> the mold and not demanding the male lead be stronger than the female lead, strong female protag just isn't enough to compensate for how.. Bland it ends up being. <<less

The OP-assassin-transmigrates trope is always hit or miss for me, but I went ahead and finished this one. The premise was fine, but everything else was meh. Akknovel's mtl disease is extra strong with this novel - pronouns are a mess and names are mixed up or translated into English (Qin Chuqin turns into Zhou Wenxuan, Xiaohua turns into Little Flower, the Gong family became the palace family, etc.). It was a bit uncomfortable reading it but I've seen worse, tbh.

Translation aside, the actual writing was often rushed and disorganized.... more>> Important scenes,

, were brushed over in one or two sentences, while filler scenes with relatives running businesses were given full chapters. The author should invest more time into writing a slice of life novel instead of an action one.

The romance was rather abrupt and not well explored. I felt that the couple did not actually have any particularly meaningful conversations until the last chapter.

In conclusion, it's a brain off read. If you like immediate satisfaction from OP protags, this one's for you, but otherwise I wouldn't spend much time on this. <<less

Enjoying to read at first but later becomes frustrating. The FL isn't a damsel in distress which is great but it takes her 150 chapters to only START paying attention to the ML. Not even falling in love yet.

It's also frustrating as the FL has no care for the current period of time she's living in. I know it's only a fiction but still some notion of the reality should reflect on the FL.

Could type more but I'm already bored with the book. I've dropped it at c165. I was... more>> hoping to get some romance. Otherwise, the action part is really well written. <<less
