Listening to the croaking of frogs in the corner of the wall, Ji Wan’er looked at the knife in her hand. What problem can’t be solved with a delicious meal? And if there is one, then two meals will do.

Well, tbo it seems like this is an arc rather than a complete novel, as it really follows the usual steps in a porrige novel, but ends just as the ML passes the final exam.

It did sort of betray the original couple dynamic and just went on to turn it generic, when it started off very fresh with MC being the one who teases and makes moves with ML -with him being really shy and always following her words-, but eventually turned into the usual, ML having insane stamina -and... more>> selfishness in bed- despite being a wilting beanstalk who literally only studies, and MC being weak, unwilling and constantly embarrassed even tho she is more active and definitely healthier.

There's not much thought being put into the difficulties of working in a kitchen, and cooking is shown as really trivial and easy to do, but that is generally the problem with other novels as well, it just stabes the eye a lot more because MC's only thing is taking care of a restaurant, as opposed to only using the cooking as a home skill, her management of the house is completely taken out of the equation, so it doesn't really include the daily life, more like it puts a limelight on the difference between OG host and MC.

As is often the case OG host is turned into the worst wrongdoer and ML and the rest of the ppl are just her victims. And yes ik most won't really think twice about OG's situation, but a very loved and spoiled girl is married off to a well known humanoid quill pen with no means, who happens to be an orphan with 2 younger siblings -very famously mistreated by their family- just because he is striving for officialdom. How exactly did her mother expect this to go? Truly incomprehensible. She marries in and is faced with a man who won't even talk to her, let alone touch her, having grown up knowing that the biggest shame for a woman is not consummating the marriage. Keep in mind this is barely a teenager, who has no one to confide in or seek advice from about her entire world basically collapsing, when things actively get worse as her new husband is kicked out of the house with nothing and now she is supposed to do everything while he isolates himself in one room. She, a teen girl who never did anything in her house, is supposed to take care of 2 children and a boy, who she only met very recently and who has so far treated her worse than she ever experienced? Is it any wonder she goes to her mom every day? Even if that mom is the person who sent her into that hell she is still her mom. Small wonder that all this turned her into a mean spirited girl who only knows to lash out at those younger than her. Seducing men? When the only way out is finding herself a man is it really surprising that she would make the choice to seek one? Yep she did wrong, was mean and selfish, but the worsening of her character and behavior is inescapable. She'd grown up never doing anything in the house, pampered and praised, always reminded of the capital and the great riches by her family, her mother praised her beauty and told her she will marry someone with money, someone who will go into the capital and bring her with him, and then... her mother chose a piece of parchment who lives in poverty as her husband, with a terrible family, would've been easier to just kill her.
Spoiler

And by the end the man who took OG host as his concubine is shown to have been living an infinitely better life now that she's gone, as if she was the only woman he could've possibly taken as a concubine, and if she didn't exist he'd be a perfect husband and father, bit*h please, if not Ji Wan'er than it'll be Jin Wan'er or Jing Wan'er.

I really cant take the ML anymore. He is so irresponsible. He is so engrossed in reading that he ignores everything else. He ignores when his wife beat and scold his siblings all day, He also ignores his wife completely and doesn't even talk to her. He just gave her his mothers dowry and doesn't even say anything. And she is supposed to be take that money and take care of him and his siblings and the home. He doesn't provide any emotional support to her, he doesn't talk at... more>> all. How can anyone survive in such environment? He fails as a elder brother and as a husband. He doesn't protect them from his relatives when they are thrown out of the house with nothing. What kind of official will he even become with such a character?

Even after the FL transmigrates, he doesn't help her in any way at all. She does all the heavy work too, yes he needs to study but he should also take up atleast some of the responsibility at home. His siblings despite being children are so much better than him. The FL cuts up the bamboo and builds a fence around the house and he doesn't even think about helping. The house is in such a state and he does nothing. He is the eldest and has to take up atleast the responsibility of giving them a decent home. The house will be leaking and will be in a really bad state. He could have fixed the leaky roof in many ways even without any money. BUT HE DOES NOTHING. He does nothing. I am really annoyed by such characters. I cant take him any more. I really hope the FL will leave him and take his siblings along with her and build a new life for herself. <<less

3.5 but rounded up.

Don't read this while hungry.

Fairly standard cooking-based transmigration story without too many hurdles for the couple to overcome. The romance is very slow to build (the MC has only kissed the ML on the cheek twice by about chapter 50) and very gentle. The title is misleading as she is neither Buddha-like nor a main consort (she's the only wife).

The MC is a young woman who transmigrates into an ancient time where she is already married. The host was originally a cruel and vain woman who disliked... more>> her husband, spread rumours about him, mistreated his siblings and often went out to interact with other men (but she was never intimate with them). The MC considers just divorcing him like a sensible person but after seeing her husband, she decides to hang around. Rather quickly, she decides that he's not a bad person and she begins to dote on him.

The ML starts off as a quiet and emotionally stunted scholar. He has been focusing on studying so that he can pass the exams and live a better life. He starts falling first for the MC and gradually worms his way into her heart. Eventually, we learn that he's not actually eq stunted but it's more of an indifference from a shitty paternal family.

Spoiler

They spent his mother's dowry. Starved and mistreated his siblings. When he failed the exam twice, they split the family and kicked him and his siblings out. Only to return later and try to take over the MC's shop and ride on his coattails when he does pass the exam. He had to threaten them with involving the law if they didn't back off (he was going to bring up his mother's dowry which was worth about 100 Taels).

[collapse]

Other than dealing with his family and the two men who were interested in the MC, there really isn't any problem. They slowly confirm their feelings and only engage in full intimacy at about the last fifth or sixth of the book. The MC quickly builds up a food-based empire while the ML conquers the different exams. While they keep the ML's siblings with them, the two gradually fade out of importance during the later part of the book.

Overall, it's not spectacular but it's a fun and uncomplicated read. It's very much a slice of life about the MC. <<less

Date Read: 24/5/2024

Personal Enjoyment: 4/5

I liked it. The pictures definitely helped give me that cosy slice-of-life atmosphere. Because there weren't a lot of descriptions of the food. The story is pretty short, I read it in a day. There weren't any frustrating events with only one faceslapping of relatives. Otherwise, it was smooth sailing. But it wasn't boring as some smooth-sailing poor-to-rich stories are. Because the business making was a bit more detailed than others! At least for most of it. All the money numbers were actually stated with... more>> costs, expenses and net profits. Of course, near the end, it got vaguer sadly. I didn't like the romance after they got together though because the ML changed and got “cured” into a typical ML who “sexes” the FL until exhaustion every night regardless of how she refuses *rolls eyes*. So sad, I really loved the dynamic at the first 3/4ths of the story though. The ML was so easily flustered!

Short Summary: Girl MC transmigrates into a cannon fodder-ish character wife of a socially stunted scholar and his 2 young siblings. She then cooks her way through life to earn money to cook more food.

Plot: 3.8/5

Pretty simple plot. MC comes in and cooks her way to a comfortable life for her and her family. Her husband grows out of his insular shell from her food and passes his exams because of love. I do feel like there were missed opportunities for more plot though or as if the author decided last second to just not explore some plotlines. For example, what happened in the original book with the protagonists and also the neighbours. There was an agreement for the MC to teach the kid 4 meat dishes and 4 vegetarian dishes but there were zero mentions of her doing that. But we know the husband's sibling got to learn from the neighbour to sew because there were mentions about that. A little odd but it didn't annoy me or anything.

Writing/Translation: 4.3/5

The translation I read is from bekiapobenjieming. The TL is very good. It's edited MTL but the finished product is fantastic. Every sentence has an effort to make it easy to read and understand despite having some minor errors. You can tell that there were multiple rounds of editing. Also, it's full of pictures showing the food and that made the experience very atmospheric and helped increase the reading experience by a lot. Honestly, I think the pictures made this into a ⅘ experience for me instead of a likely 3.7/5 without it. Yes, there were a couple of wrong pronouns and missing words at the end but it all felt like missed typos only. Every sentence was completely understandable. Kudos to the TLtor!

Pacing: 3.9/5

For the most part, it was good. We follow the MC step by step to earn more money for her expenses. And the ML didn't come in and negate all her efforts by showing some hidden past that comes with lots of money or doing something off-screen to suddenly earn double the amount she did. It is only near the end of their stay in town that the pacing got faster and things started to get a lot less specific. This seems to happen with all Chinese novels, unfortunately.

Setting/Worldbuilding: 3.7/5

Pretty generic. I would say 0.2~ stars was purely because of the pictures the Translator added since there weren't many descriptions of the food or the scene.

Characters: 3.9/5

I really liked the MC and the ML at the start. The ML was such a different character than I'm used to in these poor-to-rich transmigration stories. He was so flustered and untalkative, it was cute. The MC was also nice and calming to follow. She wasn't too extreme in character, neither too OP nor too helpless. But hardworking and grounded. The two siblings were a bit generic but not bad. The antagonists were meh. I barely knew who was who because the in-laws' names were so similar and they didn't appear much. The maiden side of the family was mildly more interesting, especially the Mc’s mother.

Romance: 3.9/5

The romance is a 4.3 for most of it until the ML got “cured” of his silent emotionally stunted ways ¾ of the way which the romance then became a 3.6/5 for me. The romance was going fantastic because of the couple's dynamic. The ML was so in his own world and was so confused and flustered by the FL lol. And then, I loved watching how their interactions slowly increased and grew. Then Idk, the ML had a breakthrough, had s*x and all that changed. He suddenly became this confident top official and is a menace to the FL in bed *rolls eyes*. You know, the whole go so many rounds the FL is left exhausted the next day. Also, a lot of the “couldn't resist the FL’s actions and then went to have lots of sex”. Also, a lot of the “FL complains and is resistant but the ML just bulldozes over her and kisses her to stop her complaining and having sex”. The usual toxic romance tropes in Chinese novels sigh... This is normal but it really bugged me because there wasn't any hint of this attitude at the start so I feel let down lol.

Rate this 3.5, the story is slice of life, hardly any excitement, and monotonous. The description about the food that FL's made is the main attraction.

FL was blessed with great people around her. The ML's siblings whose obedient and sweet child, that not once hating the FL for OG FL's mistreatment, even before the FL treat them well, the neighbors that helped herself after they reconcile about the OG FL's mistake, and a great mother and family that really love FL and helps establish her for business also helping ML... more>> through his exam. Not once they were suspecting her transformation - they did asked, and just casually accepted FL's explanation.

The ML character is so frustrating in the beginning. He is a nerd, indifferent, and doesn't care about anything except for study. What the most outrageous of him is he let the OG FL ab*se his younger siblings, and let their house unfixed before FL. His siblings was made to revolves around him and help him. Such a useless character in the beginning, thankfully he is changing because he fall for FL.

After 50+ chapter, it feels that the story was rushed, and becoming more monotonous. The romance quite good but not engaging enough.

Overall, this is a light and easy read. <<less

This is a slice of life novel, not much face slapping and zero political intrigue but lots and lots of food descriptions

Spoiler

I appreciate that the food business started out small with a food cart then grew into a breakfast restaurant and then a small 6 table restaurant and finally into a two story restaurant in the capital

[collapse]

The relationship between the ML and FL grew slowly and I found it very satisfying when they finally acknowledged their feelings for each other

It felt like the author may have had more plot but had to end the novel, so the ending was abrupt, which is the only negative about the novel

Highly recommended if you like slice of life novels <<less

Beginning was really interesting, but as the story continued, it just became more and more boring.

The MC had no challenges to overcome. It was like reading a summary of a successful person's life rather than an actual story.

Like reading a Wikipedia article about someone founding a business empire - it wouldn't go in to the challenges, it would just list the successes in a dry textbook manner. Same with the MC. After she moved to the county town, it was just smooth sailing. No issues getting a restaurant supply chain or with recipes. Just a happy fantasy.

sweet and cute, slice of life is definitely the dominant genre. Very minor conflicts. Starts out slow but the passage of time increases quickly thereafter. The transmigration aspect exists purely for the protagonist and her family's backstory and mainly gets brought up so she can compare her current life to the life the original host and her husband's immediate family would have had.

Short and sweet romance. The description for the story does not do it any justice. The relationship between the main characters is a little slow, but believable. You can see them building a stronger connection and getting to know each other and it just makes the story better. I didn’t notice any problems with the translation.

I give this 3.5 stars cus the ending is kinda abrupt. But overall the slice of life, hardworking and food really give a good read. The romance is kinda gradual, just from MC arrival, ML notice her from her food to her changes. Their love bloom as each day they slowly interact. So this novel is really a slice of life. No big drama or any misunderstanding. Not even much political issues or back story. Just hardworking MC, cooking and making money smoothly. Person reincarnates into a novel as a poor farmer who opens a restaurant with her skills as a chef in her previous life. Hardly original, hardly the best novel, but hardly the worst either. Problems are solved as quickly as possible, sometimes a bit too fast especially in the last 10 or so chapters.

Maybe it's because of the last few novels I've read but I really enjoyed the fact that there were no long term misunderstanding, no characters who constantly whine and the fact things aren't repeated a million time... more>> in order to extend the word count. In fact, this story ended before anything could happen.

[collapse]

This story focused more on MC's food business and her relationship with people around her, particularly with ML. There's not much conflict happened throughout the story. Even ML's annoying family didn't make too much wave and they're out of picture rather quickly.

Overall, this story was quite enjoyable to read if you want to read something light and sweet with almost no drama. It's just that...I want at least a few more extras after the ending because I couldn't have enough of it. <<less
