Description

Ruan Xi was reading a novel with a laid-back female protagonist at her own leisure. When she woke up again, she had transmigrated into the book and became the female supporting character with a good life, Ruan Xi, of whom the female protagonist envied.

In the story, the character Ruan Xi was the replacement for the engagement that had fallen through because her transmigrated, legitimate older sister, Ruan Ning had abandoned her fiancé from a rich family. Later, Ruan Xi was pampered to the heavens by her husband and became the winner in life as an imperially mandated first-rank wife to an official.

Ruan Xi, who had transmigrated over, watched as her transmigrated legitimate older sister prepared for that marriage happily. Similarly, her legitimate mother had also decided on another marriage agreement for her.

Ruan Xi: “……”

Years later, after the sister is suffering from her husband’s family, she came to Ruan Xi to see her struggling with misery. When she stood at the door of Ruan Xi’s house, she watched the cold and violent man in her previous life hold her in the palm of his hand with all kinds of wealth and love.

I mtl-ed the second half of this novel, and for the most part, it was an ok read.

The beginning starts off strong, with MC using her smarts to survive. The relationship between MC and ML was cute in the flirting stages, but it progressed quite quickly and became very sappy very fast.

The third sister is the main antagonist and for the longest time you wonder how this girl is still even alive. She is so annoying and rude and the fact that no one has succeeded in hiring someone to... more>> end her life is simply short of a miracle. I honestly don't understand how she can offend so many people and commit so many social offences against people but still escape unscathed, only to continue doing the same thing without much consequence.

There are multiple reincarnated/transmigrated people in this novel, and the og plot and the new plot get confusing af as you lose track of who is who and what happened in which timeline. The fact that there was an og novel and plot isn't really relevant for much of the novel. The one I feel most sorry for is the og heroine. She didn't get her happy ending, but she came to terms with her lot in this lifetime.

Plot was readable, but bland. Besides the third sister being an annoying bug that won't die, MC has a smooth life. She marries a dream guy who doesn't accept concubines (author introduced some bs trauma from his childhood to explain this), she gets along with her mother in law, she gave birth to a son almost immediately after marriage. Her life is literally perf and all the women in the novel are jealous of her. <<less

Dropped at around Ch 40.

The Female villain is on her 3rd life and is still s*upid. The "I can't member how to breathe" s*upid, the late stage "Wux-tardia" s*upid.

The Female lead "exists", because she simply exists in a room, everyone talks about how refines, how noble how brilliant, how.....

In the 1/3rd of the novel I have read, I have been begging, hoping and praying for a time skip or FML lead move out or a time skip. The novel seems to be focused on how "funny" the F-vill is as... more>> she plots and fails but the author is incapable if doing that. The dialog and world building are also terrible, it is not even enjoyable as afternoon time water novel. <<less

This novel confuse me at first with the same surname for both FL and villian and all that transmigrated stuff and it does take me a few chapter too fully graps the concept so let me try to explain it here without spoiling more than the synopsis.

og: Original

First the og FL and og ML has little role is this story so throw these characters into the back of your head.

The OG novel has a supporting female character who is a transmigrator which is Ruan San (san - meaning third). Ruan... more>> san is the third daughter. She is the only legitimate daughter while others are illegitimate including our FL. For this novel, she is the main villain.

The FL transmigrated into this novel as an illegitimate forth daughter of Ruan Family as Ruan Xi (si - meaning forth)

So this novel is not the same anymore as there is our FL, Ruan Xi and also Ruan San has been reborn. Yep she has been transmigrated and also reborn hence why I was confuse at first.

So in the OG novel, the transmigrated Ruan San doesn’t want to get married with her fiance as he was a low born so the marriage was transferred to the OG Ruan Xi. OG Ruan Xi has happy marriage while Ruan San continue living miserably until she die.

Reborn Ruan san being jealous of Ruan Xi in the original novel decide to keep the marriage and ask her mother to arrange a marriage for Ruan Xi to our ML who in OG novel are famous for being cold and are single until old age, expecting the ML to reject our FL but to her surprise ML and his family accepted the arrangement. So this is the story on how Ruan Xi try to live her life being pampered by our ML while being targeted by the reborn transmigrator Ruan San.

yknow reading this back, I dont thinkmy explaination is much better than the synopsis 🤣

Finish this novel within 24 hour, ofc minus eating showering and all that. I do love laid back novel like this because intense drama is not good for my heart lol. If you want to read novel to bypass your time, I highly recommend this one. Its not too long nor too short. Its not boring nor its has to much political details. Its still serve conspiracy, drama and revenge nicely. <<less

The translation is gold!! Thanks so much translator!

I learnt a lot of new vocabs ^^. Like most people who reviewed I think the storyline is not that exciting, but the way it was translated it feels quite poetic at times, gives flavours that makes me keep going. I do wonder if the raw version gives the same vibe.

This is a story for those who likes to read fluffy dog food romance. And remember that even the title says LAID BACK NOVEL. So do expect the flow to be laid back,... more>> as most of the story telling is from the MC perspective, who conducts herself elegantly and calmly despite calamity being thrown at her by the rest of the world.

The unique part about this novel is the villain

Spoiler

who despite being both a transmigrator and reborn living 3 lives already.. Plus given a self healing system.. Is still living her worst days

[collapse]

Most transmigration or reborn novel tells a tale where transmigrators win in their current life given they possess knowledge of the plot. But this story shows that if you don't have IQ and heart

Spoiler

the villain spent most of her time in envy and plotting. Even after 4th life failed to reflect on her wrongdoings. She just thinks whatever happened to MC is due to luck

[collapse]

in life, and fail to reflect and correct, you will not have the success you yearn for. <<less

This is possibly the most peaceful Palace drama I've read. I mean, it's not like there's no schemes here, however, compared to those bloody schemes and power struggle in other palace dramas, I still think that this story is the calmest after all, I already prepared myself for the bloody fight for the throne, fortunately, there's none since the ML is neither a Prince vying for the throne nor is he a tiger pretending to be a pig or something. I'm actually very satisfied with this set up. Although the... more>> antagonist is indeed like an unkillable c*ckroach, I'm not very annoyed due to repetition because her schemes are really funny and will just caused some speechlessness. However, what I'm actually confused about is the world background. I'm kinda baffled about it because the FL is reborn, transmigrated etc. Then the rebirth of multiple characters added confusion to it. Anyway, I don't pay attention that much to them to avoid being confused. Also, although the ML has a lot of admirers, it's really not as bloody as usual since the ML was straightforward in rejecting them. The FL's relationship with her in-laws is good too. No such heavy dramas. Anyway, I really like it. It just that albeit I don't really find it ending abruptly, I feel like it's too short but at the same time, I don't think that it'll be good to drag or stretch the story more. In short, maybe this length is already enough. Btw, where Li Ji Cheng? As the ML's best friend, he just disappeared and was never mentioned again.

Overall, it's 10/10 for me. <<less

I really liked the story at first but then it just became annoying how the MOST aggravating character Ruan san jie took up majority of the plot. Its almost like the whole story is just about showing off how s*upid and worldly annoying this character is and the FL and ML moments are just side moments.

The FL and ML are sweet and fluffy but it just really annoyed me that for more than half of the story, each chapter is 70% always about the third miss.

Translation/Writing

The translation is very good, I did not remember any mistakes or grammar problems. It was almost too perfect a match to ancient Chinese lol Translation wise, everything is very good with footnotes and pictures for better imagining but writing style wise, I personally found it too long and flowery. This is typical of the ancient Chinese cn though. Lots of long formal names, greetings, sending gifts, all the extra flowery formality adds up.

... more>> Plot

The plot structure is a bit of a straight and mellow road. Not many highs or lows that happened to the MC much. I feel like there wasn't really a climax or anything, just lots of little annoyances that got dealt with.

Themes/What Story Tried to Achieve

Well, for better or worse, the story is exactly like the title says. It follows the MC just living an amazingly lucky life with beauty, wealth, and love in the ancient past. It definitely delivered that.

Pacing

It was basically quite even. There weren't any parts that felt particularly slow or rushed.

Characters

Basically, I didn't like anyone. I only read until the end just to see how the bad guys went down. This... wasn't cathartic at all. Most of the bad guys just got offed not by anything the MC did so it felt meh.

The MC felt unchanging as this calm, don't care person most of the time and became his in love girl with the ml. She is not anything special. She doesn't do anything except learn how to move elegantly and work hard to be as expected of her status. It's completely bland to follow around. Really, the interesting things are the bad people's reactions and actions towards her, not what she does. The ML is a typical amazing ML with typical CN views especially in this time period. It's just not as bad as a stallion protagonist. Otherwise unremarkable.

The main bad guy is so s*upidly in her own head that she's completely believes she's right. All the expected faceslapping happens due to her own actions that draw in other people's fire. The other bad guys also get killed off by the ML. basically. The MC doesn't really do anything.

For side characters, they are nothing special, don't do anything interesting and basically just follow their job roles. The MC doesn't have any peers as friends so we don't see any meaningful development in the side characters. I do have a soft spot for the Qi illegitimate guy who was the previous life's husband. I feel like he was presented with a more approachable sob story and premise than the ML. It sounds like he has a more interesting bad boy image for me haha.

Overall Comments

It was so meh. No one was likeable, everything felt super superficial, the MC didn't have any hardship or conflict or make me invested in her, and all the faceslapping was really unsatisfying because for most of them, we don't get to see them being confronted by what they did. It was like they got killed off screen or mentioned getting face slapped by some other characters and that was it.

Another main thing is the romance between the MC and ML. Since I didn't particularly like them, I basically skipped all the romantic gestures and scenes. The MC felt like a completely different person when in these scenes. She was all cool and unaffected and then suddenly blushed and felt her heart thumping. I did not fully believe in the progression of love from her side. The romance didn't land for me. It is a typical male lead with a typical cn novel view. The jokes and romantic advances, at least from the guy's side, all have a s*xual undertone and the MC just blushes. All the teasing and flirting was kinda boring and just there. It didn't raise any feelings for me. It got pretty long too. I think I would have enjoyed it more if the courting scenes were shorter with fewer people observing. The humour regarding any romantic scenes or inside jokes that happened because of the romantic scenes likewise, just didn't land for me. Also, I feel like how the MC grew to have feelings for the ML felt like a jump. From meeting him once to writing a couple of letters that just talked about their day, she grew to have some feelings for him? Even after the first meeting, she felt indifferent to him. He didn't do anything for this to happen to me. I think I actually do not like this type of ML, kinda coming on strong and lecherous. And the almighty super annoying cn novel trope, consent is apparently not in fact sexy. He holds the MC's hand with no warning, hugs her the same in public, kinda without caring if she is uncomfortable doing so in public or not. And the usual ML excuse, your mouth says no but your actions aren't pushing me away teasing. No just means no whether it's something innocent like a hug in public or s*x. I think it's the language being used. It's all, "it was evident that he had ruthlessly tossed and turned Xiao Xi for the whole night...". It feels demeaning towards the girls and gives all the power to the guy.

First things first, excellent translation.

However, the novel fails on what it promised. It's not laid back at all. Its a mary sue/dogblood novel. The MC is very very sue, can do no wrong & is the heaven's chosen darling. The ML is op. Now, this by itself is not bad, but, its the other character's that killed it for me. There isn't a sane person in this entire thing. Nobody who opposes the MC seems to have even 2 brain cells to rub together. The main villain - the 3rd... more>> sister is pathetically s*upid, s*upid to the point of absurdity. Not even half a braincell to be found. None of the characters have any character growth. All the other females have to either be spellbound to mc's beauty and stand on her side or they're just villainous being without any working braincells. It had such good promise in the beginning, but did not come through. The MC & ML are cute together in a very formulaic cute way, which is pretty good to read but the rest of the characters killed my braincells. <<less

This novel is artsy for the sake of being artsy, no depth, no fun.

It also illustrates a somewhat depressing concept of fate from which there is no escape no matter how many times you are reborn. The same fate awaits you even if you marry a different man, choose to behave differently, choose a different money making scheme, etc. This depicts life as a dead end, no redemption, no chance for starting over, etc.

I am tempted to drop it and I keep reading it rght now only because the translation... more>> is so great that it nearly overcomes all that.

I do not know about you, but I was curious when I started and was reading reviews and spoilers about why exactly a man who avoids women and never married anyone in his previous life (due to the shock of once witnessing the bloodbath of the childbirth as a little kid) so readily agreed to marry the FL whom he apparently never met before and whom he clearly has no feelings for during their first encounter after their engagement. There is some curiosity as he looks at his child bride, but nothing else. Why?

Spoiler

It turns out that they did meet before, i.e. The original girl (with the original soul, before the transmigrated soul took over) met him in a Buddist temple when she was about twelve and he was about sixteen and apparently she saved him from some embarrassment and in return he pledged to marry her when she grows up if she wishes so then.

In the original timeline she was given away to another man in marriage by her parents, so the ML lived his life celibate to the end. But in this timeline the FL transmigrated into the body of the bride and there were some wrinkles in the plot with huge butterfly effects, so they did get engaged.

She does not remember that fateful encounter in the temple, although she has access to the original girl's memories, it is very hazy in her memories, no detail.

So far, it reads as an encounter and a snail-paced development of mutual sympathy between two twenty year olds, because the transmigrator was twenty when she died in modern China from heart failure and her fiance is a school boy, an eighteen years old. But the FL's body and mind are supposed to be only fourteen years old, so her behaviour feels artificially mature, too aged. There is no freshness, no green foolishness or spontaneity of youth, none of that. Feels stuffy, cold, too rational, almost snake-like. As if she was a forty years old frigid virg*n, not a hot blooded teenager.

A frustrating read. I dont understand why the rating is high. Full of repeated context of s*upidity by the villain. Also I noticed when FL encounter problem suddenly she got some 'special power' too that can protect her.

I understand being laid back in event of adversity bring interest to characters. But in this story, there's no challange or adversity towards FL as her opponent is too s*upid and/or unlucky. Where's the glory of winning against a worthy opponent? Thats why I think its mehhh and dry.

The 2 stars are for... more>> the interesting concept of the story about reincarnation in transmigration. Idk. The concept is as complicated as the author's narratives.😂

Romance part is okay. But the dating style is so modern. Got hold hands meh, hug2 some more during the ancient time for unmarried couple? Both ML and FL are not even from modern time. Where got this concept ah? When I write like this means I'm annoyed😂😅

But all these are just my opinion. Do read if u want to give it a try. I decided to stop at c33. Cannot go on anymore.

Kudos to translator for your great effort. <<less

Really flat and boring for me. The MC is one-dimensional, the romance is... there I guess, and the villains are so s*upid and only exist to make the always calm and supposedly smart MC look better. Idk, was expecting better, but it quickly becomes the standard story for the genre. The excellent translation is the only thing that saves this novel.

The title says a lot, the story really is about an MC who is mediocre apart from having really good looks and a good bearing. She has skills sure but they aren't ever shown off as such apart from one or two chapters when she makes her hubby a sachet.

the most entertaining thing about this novel is just the cannon-fodder character (mc's 3rd sister) who had lived 3 lives. The first one in modern times then transmigrates into a novel world in ancient times and is finally given a second... more>> chance at living in the ancient times. Not to mention she still has golden fingers (a system I think) but still, both lives ends up miserably and never learns to temper her arrogance and s*upidity.

As for the ori!protags of the novel they rarely ever show up and have no presence and things should stay that way prolly to the end.

Honestly don't expect much from this its just a really light read about how the MC lives by in ancient times following all their rules w/o standing-out and marrying a sweet hubby. <<less

This novel is pretty decent. I like how the romance progress of the FL & ML goes.

Ruan Ning's tossing will make you annoyed, but FL & ML sweet interactions will make up for it.

Spoiler

The only problem I find is that, the author just... Makes everyone except the close people who interact with FL are vicious....

When FL got pregnant, other girls (both married & unmarried) envy & wish for her to have miscarriage. This happened A LOT in the novel. Wishing for people to have miscarriage is... So bad...

And the author freakin mention it many times even after the FL gave birth. I mean, yeah sure, you can envy the FL because of her fortunate and 'lucky' life, but to simply ask for unfortunate events to happen to someone who you barely know & didn't even have any intersection with you... Idk what to say.

Author, you made me uncomfortable...

[collapse]

OriFL is just pitiful to be entangled with Ruan Ning. Tbh I really like her a lot, and it saddens me when she died pitifully in her 1st transmigration. But thankfully the author makes up for that in the last extra. <<less

For me, this is a quick read.

MC is your typical calm and elegant protagonist while the ML is a doting husband to his wife. Their life together can be said leisurely but full of drama (thanks to the ret*rded RS).

MC is quite clever and she knows how to adapt into her surroundings. Her only golden finger is that she knows how the plot goes.

While RS (the original heroine) is a reborn person with a very ret*rded personality. This is the first time I witness of how dumb this person could... more>> be despite being a reborn person. She have a very good golden finger: her medical powers. She have a greater hand than the MC.

But what makes her lose to the MC is that she's dumb af.

Everytime when I read her scenes, I was like bruh. Can she ever—I dunno—read the situation?

I really don't wanna know of why RS is the main character of the MC reads.

It is a good read with no heavily family dramas. Thank you @yuuki_Illene for picking up this novel and kudos for your hard work!!

I will wait for the chapters to pile up because there are some words that really confuses me. <<less

I liked it very much. The ML is a steady protagonist who takes care of the FL, there is no drama or misunderstanding in their relationship, which I love. FL's family is a meh, it is ok with or without them.

The "sister" transmigrator is another story, everything she did in the novel was just not rational, making you wonder if she is sane at one point. She adds spice to the novel to tell you the truth.

This is a good novel and seems to have all the elements of a great story, but it's also almost painful to read. I don't know if, as the story progresses, the author will change the tone and focus on other stuff- but so far, all it says is:

--> Family is bad, third sister is s*upid and does not learn from her mistakes, legitimate mother is bad and dumb, only MC is great and knows how to play her cards.

Geez author, I GET IT. No need to repeat the same... more>> pattern every damn chapter.

A little more story and less "Third sister tries to change the past using knowledge of events of the past, that's so dumb, it won't work, she is so bad (and dumb) ".

I'm not necessarily against female villains being portrayed as such and being unfavored in the narrative, but this one... is so crude, so much blatant disdain, the MC halo is that stepping stone sister of hers (that was also the supporting female lead used as stepping stone for the original MC on the novel). <<less

I've read up to chapter 21 and I'm dropping this. The translation is good but the story? I don't know why but I can't bear to finish it. 3 stars for me

I may be the outlier since the story was just okay for me. The story was dragging (I had to stop every few chapters since I literally got sleepy reading through it). I think my problem was that I didn’t anticipate that it was a slice of life story with a sprinkle of romance. It was my fault for not reading all the tags associated to the novel...

Translator did an excellent job (makes the terms easier to understand/remember). Also had some helpful info and images. Truly... more>> one of the best translations I’ve read so far. Probably one of the reasons why I decided to finish reading it.

Both the FL and ML are beautiful, smart, hard working, calm, and lucky. Perfect individuals, made perfectly for one another.

The villainess is annoyingly s*upid, and the complete opposite of the FL. I think I would’ve liked the story a lot more if they made the villainess into a cunning type.

Spoiler

At some point in the story, I just rolled my eyes and predicted that she’ll say or act in the most ridiculous way possible. Rather than shut up and think before acting, she’d just flare up and ignore basic etiquette. If it was her first lifetime then I’d probably be a little more considerate. But being her third lifetime (even a rebirth of the same time and place), it’s just ridiculous.

She repeatedly points out other people’s flaws or being improper while acting unladylike herself.

Even the part when her mother was doubting her, she should’ve been more wary... but no... she turned it up a notch. Simply ridiculous...
