A nice slow burn novel of this trope. I enjoyed the author going step by step into the MC’s and ML’s journey and starting a business which for once was not related to food or a restaurant. The relationship of the main couple is a strong point but I also enjoyed the supporting cast, how they’re never forgotten by the narrative and the brotherhood stays wonderfully strong till the end. Also a surprising amount of female cast and good female characters as well.

Like most novels of this type it does... more>> get a bit boring at times. Especially the last 5 or so chapters with the time jump felt personally boring to me, but also the comedy of that arc is something I don’t really enjoy. It’s not offensive but something I find annoying. Thankfully it ends in about 2 chapters so yay.

The MC also has smooth sailing at pretty much everything and I think after finishing the whole novel, that having zero business drama, especially in the beginning when things were so uncertain, was a bit of water opportunity. Let the ML go wild at least once! Alas.

It’s a feel good novel though and I did enjoy reading a low-stress novel. The most tense thing that happens is that MC and ML have to hide their relationship until they reach the year it is decriminalized. But they’re surrounded by love and support so the novel never lets you despair or feel too stressed out there either.

Overall a nice novel to relax with and easy to pick up and read in bits too feel good. The translator also does a fantastic job of giving details to china’s history in the notes! So we get a nice history lesson too. <<less

Hello everyone, I'm this novel's translator. This is actually the first project I picked as a translator, so please, please, don't hate this novel because of my skills! I'll try to become better and do this novel justice. I'm really grateful for the person who gave this novel a five star review before me, thank you Olooki for finding this novel interesting enough to look for and read the original, based on only a couple of translated chapters. Now, I want to say a few words about why I chose... more>> this novel as my first translation project. I'm not going to spoil anything about the plot, just want to talk a little bit about the main characters, as they are the reason that I found myself drawn to this book. Mind you, this is just my honest opinion about them, but I'll still mark it as a spoiler as I'm going to talk about some significant events in the book.

Spoiler

Let's start with Shu Ran, the MC. He is a transmigrator from modern times, a college student who woke up living in rural China during the '80. I have no knowledge about the conditions of life back then, so we'll just have to regard what the author says as truth. He is a highly educated young man, probably enrolled in a business programme or marketing/design degree, as he is very good at promoting and running businesses. Although not clearly stated how rich, I believe he also comes from a well-off family, since he can afford having such an expensive hobby as calligraphy and doesn't care much for money. He is also true to himself, confident and comfortable with his sexuality. Such a man was suddenly forced to live in poverty, with an uneducated and somewhat ungrateful family, faced with a grim future. Despite this, he is a highly adaptable individual, he never complains and tries to take care of those who are good to him. He learns to farm, wears old clothes and becomes responsible for the well-being of his sisters, while constantly looking for a way to improve their standards of living and escape the countryside. This opportunity is provided by the ML, and he never hesitates to take it. Marrying the ML is his chance to pull himself and his sister from mud and he grabs it, accepting the price he'd have to pay. He is cunning and knows how to talk in order to get the results he wants. As someone commented on the original novel, Shu Ran is very fit to walk the officialdom path. If transmigrated in ancient times, he'd probably become some emperor's prime minister. Regarding his relationship with the ML, he has some misconceptions about him, thinks he's a villain and mostly agrees to the marriage in order to save his sister. He knows he comes with benefits, but he believes his sister deserves better, instead of being sacrificed for money by their family. He has a handful of misunderstandings about the ML, but we can't blame him. After all, the ML is supposedly a very famous figure in history, someone controversial and whose reputation precedes him. I believe is similar to going back in time only to become Henry the 8th's wife. Some considered him a great ruler and he might have been a good husband but heck, no one would be thrilled at the prospect of marrying him :)) So right from the start, the MC accepts the marriage with the mindset of taking on the villain himself, pay him back the money his family took and get along with him for a year. He also finds him good-looking and sexually attractive, so he doesn't think his loss is that big. After all, he's confident in his ability to live well next to another man and help him earn money.

On the other hand, the ML Xu Shen is a man that nobody really understands, someone who lives in the grey area between good and bad. He indeed has a reputation, but it stems from external factors that are not his fault. He is someone abandoned by his family, a child left to live on his own, under the pitying and questioning gaze of simple village people. Someone who had to do anything necessary in order to survive. Living alone in a closed society where family is very important, everyone somehow believes that it's his fault his parents left him behind and that his character must be just as bad as theirs. Apart from his handful of friends he treats as brothers, nobody pays enough attention to try and get to know him. They just run their mouths, letting his reputation spiral out of control. They also don't understands how he earns his money and how can he be so successful. Being jealous and knowing he has no family support, it's easier to just assume he's doing something illegal, than accept he's a good man struggling to earn his money thanks to his own efforts. There is another important aspect to his character, his identity as a man confused by his s*xual orientation, living in a repressive era. As a modern man, the MC is far more open and relaxed, and doesn't think is such a big deal to marry another man, especially someone he finds attractive. The ML on the other hand, never really expects to be able to marry according to his s*xual orientation. He is someone who longs for a family of his own and believes his only attempt at happiness is marrying MC's sister, an educated woman of value who is praised as being capable as a wife. He doesn't expect to find fulfilment next to her, she's just his best bet at escaping a life of loneliness. He is eager to treat both her and her family right, as long as she's willing to come home with him. And here comes the MC, an attractive young man who doesn't shun him and also offer to take his sister's place as his wife. It's no surprise that the ML is smitten from the very beginning, since being with the MC feels "right". It's actually quite cute how he degenerates into an obedient love fool when they're alone.

Something else that I like is how they have great chemistry and intimacy right from the start, and I think this is also thanks to the MC. He never rejects the ML, not even in front of his close friends. He's not really shy, and in fact, reads as having more love experience than the ML, or at least knows more things. There is no questioning of feelings between them, no push and pull, no lack of consent and definitely no annoying white lotus behaviour or "sempai yamete!" situations :)) Their relationship grows naturally, steady and quite fast. I think that some readers might think they are progressing too fast and might be disappointed about the fact that they sleep together before technically falling in love. But I sincerely think that's quite realistic, considering the circumstances and how adult relationships usually work. After all, they are married, living together and sleeping in the same bad. They find each other attractive and want to make the relationship work, even if the MC believes is for a limited amount of time. There is no reason to refuse intimacy and I also believe that is a good way to develop feelings in a marriage of convenience situation.

[collapse]

In the end, I would like to thank everyone who decides to read this novel. It's a very nice slice of life story about earning money, becoming successful and falling in love, with an immersive setting and well-written characters. The story itself is short but long enough to capture your interest, there is no angst and the dog food in sweet and abundant. Also, the doing business part is also something I've personally never encountered in a transmigration novel before. This is not a "let's open a hot-pot restaurant" type of novel, the MC really relies on his knowledge to come up with business ideas that are adapted to the society they live in, things that he knows will be profitable in the future, but nothing OP that would make him the saviour of that era. Everything is very rational and logical, so please give this novel a try. Thank you once again! <<less

That's my first review ever. I started with 3 first chapters here and read all the novel on Chinese website with google translation. I hope novel translation will be completed because the story deserves it.

I recommend this novel for its heartfelt feeling and immersion. I liked the well-written characters, the development of the business, the atmosphere of 1983 and some realistic moments, but the text is not overloaded with them. An excellent lively plot did not let me tear myself away from the story. The author is quite logical, the... more>> story is solid, and you can enjoy it.

Spoiler

Although the main characters first get married by coincidence, their feelings develop harmoniously and there are no doubts or deviations. ML is very caring and loving. MC is creative and talented in running business.

Mutual doting couple! I love it!!

The main characters' personalities are fleshed out that they don't feel one-dimensional, and I like how they skipped being shy and went straight for the bed scene.

I'm especially taken by how the cp communicate and understand (+pampering) each other when one side is unhappy. They know how to make each other happy and it's just so endearing to see how their unhappiness never last past 1 chapter. No random jealous misunderstanding arcs, no unnecessary drama arcs, because they actually communicate!

It's also nice to see a... more>> business novel that doesn't start out with grand investments or a small snack stall by the road. It's not the best 20s century transmigeration I've read, but it hits all the right spots so I'm giving it 5* as of chapter 45. (I'm surprised the ratings are lower than 4.3 since it's a pretty good novel)

I can probably finish the raws, but I'll wait for the translations because I like reading footnotes.

Edit : I came back to finish it seeing the translations are completed. My thoughts hasn't changed. I love this! <<less

This is so good! Like Olooki before me (thanks for the review that lead me to reading this gem!), I read the first few translated chapters, then read the rest of the novel with Google Translate.

No misunderstandings, no unnecessary drama, no sudden accidents to create plot. They are great at communicating and have an understanding of each other. Even when their feelings are not mutual, they are aware of this and consenting. They also respect that the other has a past they do not wish to share and simply wait... more>> until they are ready to share everything, not pushing.

A lot of the novel focuses on their love while doing business in a growing economy, but also discusses issues of the time, such as how they have to hide their relationship which was considered illegal under the broad term "hooliganism", which was not removed from the law until 1997.

Spoiler

It was really touching when it finally was removed and the first thing they thought of doing was simply to walk outside openly holding hands, for the first time after being married for 14 years.

[collapse]

Another thing I liked about the novel is that while the MC was quite powerful and talented, his skills and knowledge could be explained by his background and interests. He also did not blatantly copy works of the future, but instead created his own original works and relied on his knowledge of what would be popular in the future to create something fresh and new. <<less

It was pretty good. Really nice to read a sincere ML and a couple who communicate.

Partway thorough it felt like their relationship had developed to a certain point and their professional endeavours had developed to a certain point and the story became less interestingly written for me. Most of the detail was devoted to frequent romantic and intimate moments (which some people will love but didn't progress the plot in any way and became rather tiresomely repetitive for me personally). The professional pursuits felt more summarised than before, and that... more>> had been a large part of what I'd enjoyed about the first half of the story. It felt like the author was spending most of the time giving standard happy endings to the main supporting characters, which was nice if you like everyone settling down neatly, but, again, felt like the story was no longer really going anywhere interesting.

I'm afraid I skimmed the last 30 chapters. But I skimmed rather than dropped because I liked the characters and did want to stick it through to the end with them.

There were a number of other irks which are minor and common in Chinese webnovels - for instance, I never enjoy the trend for having a hierarchy among the male friendship group with, of course, the ML at the top and friends always deferring to him. Not a huge issue, but it drags a decent story down for me; there are many common-found minor things present that readers of this type of novel will be familar with and may or not may not be as tired of as I am. At least the more selfish family members didn't do the typical popping up constantly to scheme and manoeuvre for advantages.

...

This overall has a pretty good tone and a mostly interesting plot. The core characters have nice relationships with each other and it's nice to see some slightly different industries covered. It's very easy to read and one where the main couple tend to always succeed at what they do and overcome challenges smoothly (in fact, I wish there had been more genuine challenge and struggle in some of their pursuits). If you like a lot of fluff and couple moments, you will be fed this in masses. I wanted more from the second half, but it lost its feeling of momentum and focused on comfortable aspects that I wasn't personally as interested in, while skimming over the things I was. <<less

The story is truly captivating, filled with well-developed characters that draw you in with their authentic personalities. The way they navigate both love and business, with a greater emphasis on love, creates a beautiful and compelling narrative. I found myself wishing the story was longer, simply to immerse myself in it for a bit longer. It’s hard to put into words just how beautiful the story is and how well the characters’ personalities were portrayed. An absolute gem that leaves a lasting impression!

5 stars for the love development of MC and ML. Their approach to their feelings are very mature.

Since some aspect of the story is business development, I find some of the ch's a lil dragging. Will continue during my free time

This is the first review I've written for a story I've read on Novel Updates and I can confidently say that this is the best danmei I've read in all the years of reading danmei. (I even made an account just to write this review)

Although in the story, it's not really explained how it was that Shu Ran ended up being transmigrated (did he die in his previous life? I don't know) it absolutely didn't take away from the stories wholesome love story and satisfying wealth accumulating factor.

The love... more>> between Shu Ran and Xu Shen was so pure and their personalities were so compatible, that all I could do throughout the story was smile from ear to ear. Even though their relationship was sort of like a fairy tail love story, it didn't really matter, because from the type of people they are (Shu Ran: A confident and intelligent person and Xu Shen: A strong and take no shit, confident man) it can be seen that they are mature people; a couple who can communicate their feelings in a respectful manner, without letting bad feelings grow in each others minds and hearts because they hold such respect for each other as individuals and view each other as equals.

The care they showed for each other when they talked about their not so pleasant childhood was so heartwarming that I really just teared up, being so glad that the author could write characters so beautifully perfect for each other.

The side characters in the story: Chen Kai, Chen Sen, Jiang Fan, and Shu Ran's sister were also written beautifully, and I was so glad that they could also get into relationships with people they loved.

I'm also going to say thank you to the translator for translating this beautiful story and giving me the opportunity to read this masterpiece <3

EVERYONE READ THIS!!! <<less

This novel is so many things. A decade+ long romance. A brotherhood of men growing up together and experiencing life's joys and challenges. China as it goes through changes related to rights for the gay community. What that community went through in an unfriendly environment. The growth of trade in that time. How and where it developed. Why someone might be more successful only selling overseas.

Lots of the LGBTQ+ information shared throughout the story was fascinating. I've always wondered how queer people were treated and whether it was safe for... more>> them to be out. Quite a few questions were answered.

As a few others have noted, the story may have gone on a few too many chapters, but that would only decrease my rating from a 5 to 4.5. The relationship between the MC and ML more than makes up for that slight drag.

Many thanks to ReeaM at KnoxT for an excellent translation. <<less

ohh I remember this novel. I like the MC because he fulfilled his end of the deal. He promised himself in place of his sister and he was actually willing to be amicable with ml. They both trust and treat each other well. Mc's background also stood as a nice setting; he isn't omniscient but believably capable.

Starts out strong, but I'm about halfway through the novel and it's really starting to get draggy. There are barely any conflicts or buildups in this to keep it exciting, and I feel like this story is just padded with a lot of meaningless conversations. I do plan to read till the end though even if I have to muddle through it, because I've gotten to the point where they've started their business ventures and I'm interested to see how it goes.

I really like how much personality the characters have.... more>> They're reasonably flawed and the MC in particular is a complex character that I kind of love-hate. He's witty, blunt, and a little c*cky in the way a privileged modern era kid would be, but he's also 'soft tempered' and doesn't like offending anyone. Sometimes it's frustrating a bit how thin his face is.

I find the ML really likeable. I think he's even a little too good for the MC... he's tolerant and doting and very affectionate. Both of them are well aware that the ML loves the MC more, and sometimes a bit too much. The MC doesn't lead him on though and they're usually open and honest with each other. It's a relationship I can fully support and root for.

(EDIT: I skimmed through the latter chapters and I was glad to see the MC developed after he got more chances to shine, and his relationship with the ML is now rock solid to the point where he would defend the ML in public. I understood the MC wanting to hide his relationship from society because they're not tolerant with homosexuality, and the ML always going along with it because he loves the MC and doesn't care about things like that... but I disliked that the MC hid it for so long from his close relationships and people he SHOULD be able to trust, like his sister. Glad that the novel settled all loose ends like that.) <<less

I don't know how to feel about this. The beginning was alright, the ML wanted to find happiness so he took a girl who seemed to be smart and loyal as his wife. That girl is the mc's sister. Seeing that she didn't want to marrying him, the MC took his place.

If you're like me who wanted to find something fluffy to pass time, its TOO fluffy. Actually, it might just be the way it's plotted. Its on the same category as the book I'm reading for school.

Also I'm triggered... more>> by the fact that the author is trying so hard to emphasize that they’re beautiful. One chapter was just about how people praised them for their haircut and beautiful face, or maybe I’m just projecting idk but this novel isn’t that fun to read for me ig. <<less

It really started off good in the beginning but then it fell flat and boring as the chapters progress.

I love ML so much. How can someone be this lovable. He is really the perfect standard. And I like how the author gave the side characters more depth and personality.

However, some scenes feels a little unnecessary. I get that since this is a slice of life novel, it focuses more on everyday life, and they often delve into mundane details to build character and setting. But it feels like they are... more>> dragging on without adding much value. I think that without the unnecessary scenes and plots I think that this novel would only have 30-35 chapters.

I usually enjoy reading slice of life novels but the slow pacing in this one was def killing my interest. I was literally struggling to finish this. Personal preferences also play a big role—what feels mundane to me might resonate deeply with you. Its just that this novel doesnt really align with my taste. <<less

Personal rating 5.0, why? Bcs they're so fffking sweet, it fulling my expectations for 80's danmei, MC doesn't had unreal gold finger, but real talent, the development also in line with history, although there's no antagonist and supporting side character is also positive it's not makes u bored, it full of anticipation, the development logic also line with realistic speculation. The ending was a chef's kiss *muach..

A funny, lighthearted, easy going story about two people making a fortune while loving each other and enjoying life with their friends. Could be regarded as a younger, spirited brother of the novel Investment Life. The economical progress is described in an interesting way, in a large part due to the fascinating side characters, the group of friends around the main pair. Everyone slowly grow up, change, start families, and the entire progression is shown in a soft, slice-of-life way without any significant angst.

The plot definitely what I wouldnt expect based on the summary alone.

The story start unique where MC negotiate to ML how to let his sister not marry him. So while the story start with no Love, it's a Mutual Consent. Their first kiss and first time also all with Great Consent.

ML may seem domineering and MC was wary of him at the beginning, but it was Understandable with the knowledge he had about the Future. But his relationship doesn't based on Fear whatsoever.

ML truly treat MC so well everyone can... more>> see that. So it natural with how MC can easily fall for ML. It became easy after the debt from previous negotiation cleared.

But sadly the relationship between MC and ML is mostly secret to anyone but ML's good friends. They don't have real marriage because it's in a Normal world (no Ger or MPREG or Omega verse) and 1980 where no Gay Marriage allowed.

ML is not All Powerful person, so it's basically story of Ordinary people become Rich with help of MC. MC try so hard to not let ML in Bad/Illegal Business.

MC doesn't have any Golden Finger, he just has his Knowledge and Extrovert personality. ML will try to protect him as best as he can.

ML truly support MC. He even can tell MC has secrets, but he won't force MC to reveal it. MC also want to tell ML his secret, but so far it's still hidden.

Anyway this Novel is really Nice. I pray so hard the rest of the story is as Good and Satisfying!!! 🙏🙏🙏 <<less

This story is beautiful a slice of life I can't ever put down.

There's no exaggerated villains here, just humans with mistakes different mindsets with varying environment that shaped them to who they are. I was so feeling sad that it ended 😞. There story was beautiful and a bit realistic, I just don't know but the scale of how their business grew and built business every half a year or another year is realistic or a bit fast pace for the story. But it's compact with the story of even... more>> the side characters have ending. I love stories who started in the 80's just like "reborn in the 80s" it was also a good read. But this one focused on their development together with the times. It's more realistic than the other with mpreg but it's good. Will miss Xu Shen and Shu Ran. I just ended it but wanted to read again from the beginning. <<less

As an opener, I would like to quote the first line of a song that is not relevant to our protagonists, but perfectly encapsulates this novel in one go.

You touch me and its almost like we knew that there would be history between us two.

Yes, this is from Lauv's "There's No Way". I can't help but be reminded of that line while reading because despite this novel being less spicy (I blame it on Screen Partner for making my cravings raunchy these days), it's like a crispy, refreshing gulp of... more>> ice water that's quenching my unknown thirst for young adult romance. Minor spoiler, but I think the standout moment that truly made me think, "this novel is Really Good" was when—

Spoiler

during their wedding night, they have yet to truly know each other but both of them equally wanted that night anyway because they talked with so much considerate honesty. The attraction. The chemistry. The lack of affection. Culture. Tradition. Commitment. It was not enough, and yet somehow when the bedroom door was shut they found themselves satisfied. As if they knew it was a good start. That they can make something special out of it.

As a reader, I think it did a really good job of showing what marriage is like at that point and place in time. It's fast, it's stoic, and it's awkward—modern people like us would rarely think that such a relationship can work—but if it does work, what does it look like? If a modern day person is thrown into the mix, how will they do it? In conclusion, the wedding night scene really got me hooked with the sheer amount of plot and characterization that the author managed to cram and while still making it look cute and silly and hot and grounded.

[collapse]

Speaking of really good things, here's some more little praises I have for this novel:

• Age-appropriate!! By that, I mean the character move very much like people of their age range. Even the translator pointed this out. As men in their early 20's they really act like it, and as they grow older you can feel them gracefully mature. Really cute!

• Cast dynamics are present!! The friend group in this novel is big (started with a core group of 5 that doubled up in size as the years go by lmao), which is honestly unexpected since the novel is short in length, but I really loved how everyone got some cute little moments with Shu Ran or Xu Shen that makes their connections distinct and memorable.

• Shu Ran and Xu Shen!! Ugh, just them in general, really. They were written so well. You know how in most novels you kind of automatically accept that the leads just get together forever because it's an unspoken rule that endgame by the end of the novel = lifetime?? Yeah, I'm afraid that's not the case here.

This will be my closing remarks so I'll say my final gibberish from here on out.

Shu Ran and Xu Shen talks a lot. In a sense that Shu Ran talks a thousand words, while Xu Shen listens to a thousand words. And no, this is not a case of an introvert and an extrovert being a match made in heaven, but simply a case of talking it through until you can Talk About It (you'll know when you read the novel). There's so many explicit (with dialogue) and implicit (just brief mention) moments of these two just chatting the night away, and oh boy, it is simply so dear to me. It is not an exaggeration to say that during the first four years of their marriage, when they NEVER asked any question about things they badly wanted to know because the foundation of their relationship isn't secure enough, talking incessantly to each other is what made it look and feel like a walk in the park. You can never guess how many times I said, "They were friends!" during those moments lmao like I was just truly happy that if they suddenly became real and Real World things were applied to them I can be rest assured that they'd still be together until the end because THEIR LONGEVITY MAKES SENSE!! BECAUSE THEY! ARE! FRIENDS!

And that's how I end this review. Read it, please. They're really precious. If you want it fast this novel ain't it, but I'd still encourage you to proceed because you deserve to see pretty things. Check it out! <<less

Sugary sweet~

The story itself is average, with the MC and ML being OP businessmen whose ventures never fail. However, the author does a marvelous job fleshing out their romance. The main supporting characters are memorable and interesting. The story spanned decades of the couple's marriage, and it really felt like they and their friends were maturing together.
