Wait, did that mean the handsome husband from the book was hers now? Chu Lian decided to welcome him with open arms!

However, what she got wasn’t the kind husband she had been expecting. Instead, his personality seemed to have been completely flipped! He left her all alone on their wedding night… and just five days into their marriage, her dear husband abandoned his loving wife and left to enlist in the army!

Fine! Be that way! She could pass her days perfectly well somehow, even if she had to do it alone!

Chu Lian put her household in order, charmed the rest of her new family, and did a little business on the side. She even opened up some new trade routes! Her days passed peacefully and leisurely… Until her dear husband got into trouble at the frontline of the war.

Hmph, isn’t he crawling back to me for help in the end? Forget it, I’ll go save him myself!

It was really a good read, I didn't skip even one chap (for once)...

Spoiler

I had to endure the ML at the start because he was bad, even though it wasn't his fault, and the only thing I took really bad was the 360° change between the female lead and the grandmother in law;

[collapse]

Also the ending was a bit bland it wasn't really satisfying but overall it was a pretty good read!

The translation was great, this had so much potential but sadly the story was kind of...I quite like the FL, she’s generally a likeable character and I really enjoyed reading about how she made a business for herself. I was really hyped for the romance to kick in but tbh once it did it went downhill. The ML went from (understandably) cold and distrusting to scary mood swings, tantrums and almost r*pey at times! Like what??! Couldn’t understand why the FL didn’t get more angry when he was groping her... more>> sleeping body, like SHE NEARLY DIED A FEW MINUTES AGO AND JUST WOKE UP TO THE ML KISSING AND GROPING HER TITS, THATS HELLA TRAUMATISING!! <<less

Loved it!

My only complain is the ending was rushed. Some of the character we were curios about we don't know how did they end up. For example XY character, did marry YX prince and lived happily or not? Did XY Princess marry YX person or not? What happened to them.

Altough the male lead and female lead ended up happily ever after, but the world of the novel is... Well you can see why some author is called "author mom". They protect their main character that much, nothing can defeat them,... more>> and the author made some really s*upid villains to make the main characters and other good characters look smart.

Overall, I liked the novel, ending was a bit disappointing, because lot of people were curious about some side characters, but it was good. I loved the male lead, he was a bit trsundere but he was really sweet later on, and always pampered his cute wife.

Dog food, I ate lot of dog food later on.

The romance was slow, but the food p*rn before the romance made us happy. <<less

It started out well enough and the middle was fine too although I also dislike the handling of Madam Zou's character and the MC's interaction with her. The stuff that went wrong could have been avoided if the MC wasn't so apathetic about it. Everyone is responsible for themselves but the MC has made some morally questionable choices. Having a flawed character if fine but it also conflicts with how the character is portrayed at other times.

There were some shades of "you can't change destiny" in that there seems to... more>> be some invisible force trying to drive things back toward the plot of the original novel despite the MC's effort which could have been interesting but that seems to have been dropped.

Unfortunately the story takes a nose dive with the arc starting at chapter 625. It takes a couple of chapters to do the dive but it devolves into everyone's favorit C-Novel cliche of drama via misunderstanding. It would have been fine if this was placed earlier in the plot, prior to the couple resolving their position regarding each other. This is basically 25+ chapters of useless filler. Plus because I have paused here until if finished before continuing so I don't know where it will end. This arc alone is enough for me to recommend against reading this if you are reading these reviews to try to decide if you should start. <<less

Well, I liked it a lot at first, but ever since the main couple has gotten together, this novel just frustrates me. The author seriously has no concept of how relationships work, and all these descriptions of supposedly happy marital s*x that are actually kind of r*pey leave a sour taste in my mouth. It has also been really dragging out over the final 50 chapters, introducing unneeded misunderstandings and not really any sort of plot climax.

The best of best!

I really like the flow of the stories. The pace is nor too slow nor too fast. Although I don't know how Chu lian can remember so much recipes in her head, but really I do like how people around Chu lian act like a foodies who think nothing than to eat a good food!

This story is hilarious and always makes me hungry. The faceslappings are satisfying too.

I like how ML is soo tsunderee and love his wife and her food.

And the translation is really the best!

I actually want to give 1/5, but when I notice that the author write 330 CHAPTERS, I give the author another star for her hardwork.

i really have high expectation when I see this novel ranking (#7 in weekly rank).

the male character is so focused on finding the loophole of his wife' behavior (since the male character is reincarnated), while the wife (AKA main female lead) is busy with cooking....

when I see the synopsis, I thought that the male character will definitely go to army within few first chapters, and until... more>> 82 the main male character was still on the journey to the army....

i thought that it's better to put the genre into COOKING, BAKING, and all those stuff. not really have some spices of romance, both main character also doesnt look smart, the story flows veryyyyy slow..... <<less

Uh this.. Novel is interesting in its own way but all I can say is that not every problem can be solve with food. Author is putting too much luck on using food to solve problem. Like seriously, author, not everyone is a foodie. A lot of nonsensical part every now and then and I find MC is too lucky and she does not have any downs in life. Too much bs.

Take your standard transmigration to the useless xth miss novel and just toss all the usual issues like political scheming and assassins in favor of comic misunderstandings and cooking. I'll be honest when I say I was expecting something else when I saw the title, but I'm enjoying this.

The male lead is natural very confident in his opinion that his wife is an evil woman who is planning to betray him, since he's reincarnated and she betrayed him the previous time.

The female lead meanwhile decides to ignore the plot and... more>> be a happy noble lady. Since she doesn't know the plot like the Male lead and is confused by his behavior. <<less

I've been browsing reincarnation/transmigration novels and so far TMR became one of the most interesting ones.

Basically, the one who Reincarnated was the ML and the MC transmigrated into the MC of a novel she read in the modern world. When they meet, ML just has a big misunderstanding so he is a wee bit rough.

The progress of their love story is reaaaaaly slow.

... more>> Anyways, I love the food p*rn added to it. Somehow, it makes very big sense to me.

Imagine how horrible it would be if you suddenly enter an era with only cooking, frying, and steaming the only way of cooking food! <<less

The premise: The protagonist is a modern food-lover who awakens in the body of the female lead of the book she was reading. Furthermore, she does so just before the first night with her new husband... who turns out to be compltely different from the nice gentleman she remembers from the book. This is because she didn't finish the book, so she was unaware of the fact that the male lead actually reincarnated, remembering all the crap the original female lead put him through in his first life. Because of... more>> this, he is trying to passive-aggressively get rid of the MC, who in turn just wants to have a simple, carefree life and completely ignores him.

Characters: First have our female MC. She is calm, straightforward, and while she is just a foodie, because this is a fairly straightforward ancient environment, her modern culinary knowledge makes her an incredible cook that shocks everyone. The male lead, on the other hand, is a jaded reincarnator who tries to get rid of her any way he can, which often backfires on him in a hilarious manner. There are also a lot of side-characters, but they are not particularly fleshed out. They generally only exist either to serve as speedbump, to applaud the MC for her culinary skills, or a mixture of the two.

Plot: There isn't much. While there is the underlying push and pull dynamic between the two leads, there is not much of a plot to talk about aside of the heroine trying to avoid the more annoying plot-points from the original book or trying to curry favors from others with her cooking. Speaking of which, don't read this while hungry, as a good third of the chapters are all about people cooking or eating various dishes.

Writing: Generally okay. Aside of the culinary side getting a little tedious at times, the author had a good sense of humor and setting up the characters. Most of the comedy comes from either the male lead's petty, stubborn jabs at the MC (and the ways they often backfire) or the servants and other side-characters misunderstanding the nonchalance of the MC as her coping mechanism and trying their best to cater to her. There is little romance so far, and to be frank, unless the male lead would go through a lot of character-development (and specifically apologizes for almost strangling the MC on their wedding night), I'm afraid things could end up really, really creepy and disturbing.

Translation: Very good, with timebun on Volare actually adding a ton of extra notes and pictures to illustrate the foodstuff and other elements. Kudos for that. However, what infuriates me in turn is that they had the unholy idea to divide up the chapters. The chapters themselves are fairly short to begin with, so more often than not you can end up with 700 words long "chapters", making reading this WN daily completely pointless, like trying to read a webcomic with only one panel released per day.

Summary: This is a decent slice-of-life comedy/food-p*rn work. However, I recommend reading it in at leas 60 "chapter" chunks, otherwise it is very unsatisfying. <<less

Love this story so far, really looking forward to each new chapter.

The female lead isn't cultivating some incredible martial art, she isn't the world's most insanely talented doctor, but she does have cooking skills that are slightly over powered. For the most part she is a very believable and flawed individual that doesn't come across as unbelievable.

The male lead is a great counter balance. Again, not over powered, not unrealistically emotionless or cold, completely believable.

The story is at times, funny, catchy and witty. A great read.

BEWARE of SPOILER

Spoiler

If you have read Doomed To Be A Cannon Fodder, then you'll know there's some resemblance between both stories. Both MCs were transmigrator that was good at cooking and war tactics albeit accidentally. And both ML was tsundere. The biggest difference was that in TMR, the ML was reborn. It took a while for me to warm up to TMR because it lack humor.

All we got from the past Chu Lian, she was a globe trekker because of the nature of her job and had tasted almost every delicacy there was. But, for Chu Lian to be an expert in cooking without further detail, was not convincing enough for me. Unless of course, she's a natural chef. He Sanlang was as tsundere as any ML can be. He was cold towards Chu Lian because, in his past life, she betrayed him for another man.

What I like about Chu Lian, even though she read the book, and knew most of the antagonists, she gave them the benefit of the doubt. She gave them chances to change the course of their life and if they still proceed to harm her, only then will she retaliate. Unlike He Sanlang who at the beginning of the story, not once gave any chance to Chu Lian.

I read this story mostly because Dryvk, a reviewer on NU, ranted about Madam Zou. And I have to disagree with Dryvk. Truth be told, every noble lady especially born as a Di daughter was taught household management unless they are not favored like Chu Lian, which later on we learned the reason behind it. For Madam Zou to fail her duty, and for us to later found out that her dowry was more the amount than when she brought during her wedding, yes embezzlement, I didn't think there's any redeeming quality for her. One thing I do agree though, it's not up to Madam Zou to decide whether she gave birth to a boy or a girl. But, the moment she emotionally ab*ses her two daughters, I cross the line with Madam Zou.

2.5 stars (for food, side characters and translation quality)

I hope no one ever learns from the examples of Chu Lian or He Changdi. Please communicate with your significant other/s. Be straightforward and honest. If you feel like you'd rather give your lover the cold shoulder than properly communicate. The relationship isnt worth keeping.

The misunderstandings and the lack of communication+ cold wars were truly infuriating and toxic.

The ML is way too dub-con too my liking. FL doesn't like but doesn't say, she calls it "torture" but still goes along with... more>> it. TALK! DAMMIT! I don't know how many hairs I pulled out of my scalp. The so called snu snu was hard to read through.

If they were in the modern times they'd have divorced by now with FL giving the male lead silent treatment waiting for ML to speak up.

Yet she never does the same.

The author tries to pin it all on the ML when relationships are a two way street so the couple are both at fault. He Sanlang the tsundere was infuriating at the start, due to his PTSD his paranoia was understandable, and he later showed signs of improvement. However, the FL remained the same, indifferent and lacking growth besides having a golden finger for certain occasions.

While at first her giving ML "retribution" for how he treated her initially was satisfying to read. It got old way too fast, plus since they already decided to become a couple, why did they still went with their round-about way of communicating. Both sides hurt and silent, keeping things to themself until one gets guilt-tripped/feels guilty and speaks up.

**THEY BOTH DON'T APOLOGISE TO EACH OTHER FOR THE ACTIONS THAT HURT THE OTHER PARTY. The number of apologies can be counted on one hand.... The lack of accountability and sincere apologies. Author tries to show that they "talk through their eyes." That is a one way ticket to miscommunication folks. I get that eyes can be "expressive" but what is more expressive is words coupled with actions!

The only thing that kept me going was the foods, the foodie nobles, tsun tsun Duanjia, Prince Jin+Sima Hui

(This review was written after I re-read it again, I finished in 2019, and realised how harmful the miscommunications/stone walling were in this relationship.)

Author tries to justify it through FL point of view but it's just another way of justifying avoidance/refusal to communicate. Both characters seemed to improve yet author pulls their IQs down to the ground again for "drama" and "plot" sake. We don't need drama like this. Make the plot fun not unnecessary misunderstandings that stretch the "drama. <<less

First of all, I believe that for thoroughly enjoy this story one must be aware of its genre.

This is set in ancient china, a patriarchal society, its a transmigration and reincarnation story, with romance and food p*rn. It's not a revolutionary take on the premise either. With this in mind, unless your ability to suspend reality is lower than average and you dislike this type of genre in the first place, you're certain to enjoy this novel.

The main protagonists are OP, there is no other way around it. Even if... more>> the ML had reincarnated there is a lot of inconsistencies in his character and how others perceived him. For example;

Spoiler

He was supposed to have reincarnated a little before the wedding, so his personality should still have been the same as in the original book, kind, optimistic, caring and relaxed, but when he remembered his memories from his previous life, he was stoic, cold and expressionless but nobody questioned him even if he was the "most" favorite out if his brothers.

[collapse]

The ML received a lot of hate at the beginning for his actions against the FML, but I believe he was in all his right to act the way he did and he slowly changes and falls in love with her. Which was sweet, incredibly hilarious, and clumsy.

Although, the FML doesn't have the knowledge of the whole novel when she transmigrated, affecting her "cheat", she was still pretty OP. Her recipes, business skills and all of her foreknowledge that she did have, set her up for success since the very beginning.

The antagonists are frustrating, to say the least. The cannon fodders are extremely disappointing, and the ending was rushed.

Still, I gave it a 5 star, because all of this was withing my expectations and the author still added sufficient twists and interesting arcs that I very much loved to read.

The fluff is unimaginably sweet, the sexy scenes are steamy within the common boundaries of a CN novel, the action and tense situations are not too heavy and not too consuming, just enough, although some endings were a bit unsatisfying there was enough face slapping at the beginning to quell the thirst, the food p*rn was amazing. But all of this was made justice with the awesome translation it has. The terms were well explained, the TN were useful and the flow of the story was devoid of crappy grammar, there are still a few minor slip ups, nothing preposterous.

Overall, this was a story that you'll enjoy once you're used to the genre and its common stereotypes. <<less

Ok guys, this is my very first review despite countless Chinese novel that I have read. The sole and only reason I write a review is because of the.... ENDING!

I was left with completely baffled with the ending. It was so abrupt and rush. Like the author already fed up with the story and decide to end thing in one freaking chapter! (Split by 3 chapters if I'm not mistaken) The amount of time I spent to read this story is wasted just like that.

in my point of view, the... more>> story is not that great but it was passable.
Spoiler

Even though sometimes I was left frustrated by how the author give a lot of leeway and chances to ML, I can bear it. Afterall, this story is set in ancient China and the MC is not like others transmigrator character which know everything that going to happen. The flaws and every little details in the story make the story passable to read. BUT BECAUSE THE ABRUPT ENDING, I ONLY GIVE THE STORY 4 STAR. NOT UNTIL U READ THE STORY U KNOW HOW FRUSTRATED THE AUTHOR END THE STORY. Its just like that. All conclude in one f*cking chapter.

[collapse]

And I left with unsatisfied desire like someone block you when you're about reaching c**max, after a very long endure. That kind of feels. <<less

An incredibly good translation. Obviously the translator really invested time and a lot of love into the translation. It has well researched comments for everything not translatable into english, and chinese customs that most westerners wouldn't know.

As for the novel itself, it's an intersting and good read for the first 400 or so chapters before the male lead suddenly falls in love with the female lead, basically r*pes her, and all the female lead does is swoon over what a good husband he is.

Interesting, if somewhat lengthy novel. Romance wise, it wasn't really romantic, but they didn't fall in love too suddenly but rather quite progressively. Typical historical setting family and power drama. FL is quite OP with her cooking skills and miscellaneous knowledge, which is quite unrealistic. ML is a massive jealous fool but a protective husband. Not much comedy in this novel IMO, except how everyone seems to fall over themselves just for FL's food (which is ridiculous, so matter how bad historical food is, there's bound to be SOME good... more>> stuff somewhere other than food cooked by her right???). The last chapter ending was quite abrupt, but most of the loose ends for the plot was settled, so it was just the last chapter that seemed to be written badly.

Overall, interesting read that isn't boring, but not very realistic with some plot holes here and there. Read when you ran out of better stories to read. <<less

A slice of life tale which gives a realistic depiction of a marriage where both characters think they know their spouse.

Translation quality: volarenovels is creme de la creme. You won’t be disappointed.

Writing/Story quality: A basic plot which can be entertaining at times, but lacks some of the more nuanced characteristics of a great romance novel.

This novel is best for those who like romantic subplots and are looking for something more mature than Daughter of the Emperor, but tamer than Adorable Food Goddess.
