This could be one of the best novel series I have read if it wasn't an isekai. I don't even know why it is a gender bender isekai to the point of having "TS" in the title as if it is a main focal point. The inclusion of isekai elements exists solely so the author can draw parallels to Earth and video games as they aren't confident in writing from the perspective of an actual character in the world. It also lets the author skirt around their lack of world-building.... more>> These are my only significant issues against what I consider a must-read series. It has its isekai cliche shortcomings, but people comparing it negatively to Tanya are doing a disservice to prospective readers. <<less

This..... this novel is masterpiece.... I'm not even exaggerating it's scary....

I was too immersed in the story... when something happy happened I smiled, When something bad happened I cried..., and when something upsetting happened I got angry...

Sometimes I wanna punch the author in the face with hatred because they keep making me depressed when something bad happens....

I don't even like war novels infact I don't like depressing story because it hurts me... but this novel is different... I can't stop reading it.... I've been reading it for 4 days straight...... more>> every chapter is interesting in its on way. I'm always engaged to the story... just... wow....

And you know what? I'm also reading it with google translation... imagine if I'm reading it with proper translation.. I might go crazy... it's scary...

Honestly give it a try... don't drop it when your emotion can't handle what's happening because I'm also the same at the beginning...

The story is just too... good... that it grabbed me to the throat without giving me a chance to escape...

Sorry if what I'm saying is hard to understand... I'm ESL myself and my english is not that far from great.

I wanna just say for the last time, please give it a try, well... the translated chapters is only few...

If you can handle MTL it's honestly readable... just adjust the things in your own... <<less

Webnovel reader here, caught up to the latest chapter.

First off, do not be fooled by its setting and compare it to something like Youjo Senki. This is nothing at all like anything else currently floating around. It is a piece of WW1 media, with a light fantasy skin painted over the top of it to bait people into reading it because us weebs wouldn't read it otherwise.

And secondly, on that note, it is genuinely one of the best pieces of WW1 media ever made, up there with the greats like... more>> All Quiet on the Western Front, They Shall Not Grow Old, and 1917. It's certainly the best to come out of Japan and it's probably the best one to come in a long serialised form in general.

This is a story about being in Hell and struggling to have the desire to survive. It's about the instantaneous nature of tragedy and how it can come from nowhere and take everything in an instant. It's about the fleetingness of human connection. It's about how everyone, on every side, of every temperament and every background, lives the same, smiles the same, loves the same, cries the same and dies the same.

And despite being deeply miserable, it is also deeply touching and emotional. Even when you lose everything, you're not alone; everyone else is just like you. The common root of suffering turns strangers into people you understand and trust in an instant, fleeting connections power through the despair of tragedy and give you hope and the will to trudge through hell. Everyone, no matter where they come from, dies the same, yes, but they love the same, and they smile the same. Life is precious, so don't waste it on hating, don't waste it on fighting. <<less

I've tried typing this up multiple times now, but ended up writing essays. There's a lot I really want to say, but I don't think this is the suitable place. As such, I'll try to keep this as short as possible, but please understand if I end up rambling too long. This story is good enough that it's hard to keep myself from doing so.

This story is good. Period. It's really good at keeping you engaged and tugging at your heartstrings. However, it should be noted that this is definitely... more>> a war story and is best termed as a tragedy. Bad things happen, and then they keep happening. Over and over. If you're not okay with getting emotionally gut punched relentlessly, this is not the story for you.

Touri is the main character. She's a former top ranked FPS player before she reincarnated as a orphan girl. She joined the army to try to repay her orphanage and because she thought maybe she could do well with her FPS skills. This was, however, a gross overestimation of her kills and those kinds of thoughts quickly died when she faced the reality of war.

As a character, Touri is a kind and very morale character. She keeps her word and repays her debts. She is also capable of casting magic, mainly the Heal and Shield spell. Because of the valuableness of Heal magic, she is assigned as a medic and somehow gets attached to an assault platoon where the story begins.

The story is very much NOT kind to Touri. Tragedies happen all around her and no one is safe from dying. Seriously, word of warning. Don't get too attached to anyone, no matter who they are. More than likely, they're going to die.

Example (major spoilers) :
Spoiler

Rodney is a soldier who joins Touri's squad early on. They bond and become buddies. They even go on a date together at one point, though they both claim it's platonic. Rodney quickly becomes an existence Touri depends on to a huge extent.

At one point, Rodney volunteers to be a decoy on a su*cide mission in order to keep everyone safe. Touri volunteers to join the decoy unit as a result. They're both mortally wounded and, in order to keep from sharing another tragic secret, Touri confessed to him as he lays dying against a tree. They have an impromptu marriage before he dies, her first kiss being one that tastes of blood. Touri then straps Rodney's body to her back, drags herself to a river, then throws herself into it so the enemy can't desecrate Rodney's corpse and can't have their way with her. Her body belongs to him now, after all. (F*cking beautiful scene btw, had me in tears)

She survives, of course. Fast forward a bunch and she meets Rodney's little sister, Linalee, who he had talked about a lot before. She's the sole survivor of her town after they got attacked by an enemy army. Touri wants to get to know her since she's technically family, but Linalee is prickly because she's in mourning. However, after some effort, Touri gets through to her and they become much closer. Linalee even starts calling her Onee-san. Then the enemy attacks and Linalee gets horribly killed. Cue Touri completely falling apart.

[collapse]

The world itself is also quite interesting. It's a pre-WW1 era world where guns are just starting to be widely used in militaries and countries still try sending knights on horses charging into trenches lined with gunmen. It's also a world of magic where exceptional soldiers are capable of actually charging into lines of soldiers with only swords and Shield spells, though that's generally only done by Ace class soldiers (super rare, you'd be lucky to find one in a thousand). This allows for a setting where mass combat is standard, but single soldiers can sometimes make all the difference.

Touri's skills (major spoilers) :
Spoiler

Touri herself starts off quite weak, not even capable of casting Heal despite being a medic. She quickly picks that up though alongside the Shield spell. She also trains to have the endurance to keep up with the assault platoon she's assigned to. Because she has excellent battlefield awareness, she also picks up some training as a scout. Eventually, she trains under a defense platoon and finally learns how to shoot and Shield properly.

From her past life, she also has some experience with leading squads and basic tactics, though it takes time before she can translate that to a real war. Quite frankly, her tactical capabilities as a battlefield commander are likely just as good, if not better than, the best two commanders in the story (both of whom view her as monstrously skilled and really want to recruit her for themselves), but her low self-esteem, modest nature, and general pacifistic personality means she doesn't think of herself as that skilled. It's also not a skill she really gets to show off until way later in the story.

Her best ability however is her danger sense. It's basically supernatural with how good it is. At the right times, she can know what actions she should or shouldn't take entirely based on her danger sense. It takes a while before she really starts showing it off, mostly because she spends most of the story in the field hospital healing, but when she pops off she can really pop off. This becomes especially useful later on when she finally stops being a medic and gets assigned her own company to lead.

[collapse]

One trick the story does is give you a preview of what happens from a future, historical perspective. It'll even outright tell you the outcome of the war or of a particular battle. However, it's also a case of unreliable narrator and a showing of how victors write the history books. The author definitely uses this really well as a tool to lead you in whatever direction they want you to go. It's incredibly well done and I'm genuinely impressed with some of the things they pull off with it.

If I had to give criticism, it'd have to be that the story perhaps gets too depressing and dark. Bad things just don't stop happening. Like seriously, they don't. Even when it feels like things might be getting better, it's just that you haven't noticed the knife already starting to twist. It never feels like Touri gets a real break and it definitely gets frustrating at times since you really start wanting her to get a real win. But since it's war, even her victories often feel more pyrrhic than anything else. It's still written really well though and it generally doesn't feel like the author is forcing things as much as it feels like a natural extension of what was already written.

Great story, highly recommended. 5/5, as long as you can stomach being depressed by the constant deaths and tragedies. <<less

Once in a blue moon, you pick up something that hooks you, keeps you thinking about it, turning the pages. When you finally finish it, you're left with shivers, and a numb, lethargic feeling in your mind. You need to move on with your day, but for the moment, you are simply content to bask in this melancholic feeling.

This is one of those. It's not a power fantasy, not a progression fantasy, litrpg, regression, or any of the popular genres of this time. It's just a story of a young... more>> girl's desperate struggles to live and protect her loved ones in a land ravaged and torn apart by war.

No story is perfect, and certainly not this one, but this is one of the rare times where I feel that the story it is telling vastly overshadows any of the flaws a reader may find.

It's not a story for everyone, but I'll leave this review in hopes that even one more person would pick up and enjoy this emotional work. <<less

This web novel has serious potential! It’s currently on its third translator (which is a bit worrisome) but all three have done good jobs so far.

The world and protagonist share many similarities to Youjo Senki, but the protagonist of this is more compassionate.

The plot and side characters are well done in my opinion, I feel like this story has a soul. It was able to evoke emotion and that’s always a sign of good writing!

I hope to see this novel continue to get written/translated. (Also it has a manga adaption)... more>> <<less

First of all, a Youjo Senki this is not. If you want a military story, look else where. This story is a trajedy through and through. A story about people in a war and how they deal with being people in a war.

If you are easily emotionally manipulated by an author (I am one of these people) and get easily attached to characters, this is the novel for you. People will die and they will die like flies. Without reason, without little or no conclusion to their arc. Are you... more>> in the need for catharsis? Read it, if not, wait until you want to feel sad. Yes, it is a bit torture p*rn-i. Yes, the military maneuvers make little sense. But if you are here to remember the fallen, their smile and laugh, their hate and faults, read this.

Faulty, but I can't help, but love it. <<less

I really don't understand the other 3 reviews so far. The story is just pure nonsense.. And I really mean that. Nothing makes sense.. The worldbuilding, the army command structure, the battles, the characters. It's like reading something a schizophrenic wrote, without any knowledge of historical warfare or even basic common sense. I could of course elaborate further, but it's just a waste of time honestly. Read the first two chapters and experience this trainwreck for yourself.

In conclusion: don't get fooled by the neat cover and just read Youjo Senki... more>> instead. <<less

In short, Good. Very very good.

Lots of complaints about the unnecessary TS elements and reincarnation. I used to think that way as well but the reincarnation element honestly has a really nice payoff in the future volumes in really well written ways. The TS part is still unnecessary but its such a small detail that I can't find reason to give it any care. Here is a review that focuses more on the important stuff.

This is a story with lots of heartbreak, lots of depression, and very little hope. Poor... more>> little Touri has to fight in a war as an insignificant little medic and is constantly experiencing loss and despair. But even through that, irreplaceable bonds are being formed and life is being lived, as desperate and difficult as it is in the front lines. There's something horribly sad but equally beautiful about that. It's a story that makes you feel many things by masterfully weaving tragedy and heartfelt warmth. A certain moment from the end of volume 4 absolutely violated my emotions. I'll never recover from that damage. 10/10.

Spoiler

THEY DESERVE TO BE HAPPY

[collapse]

There's no issues with characters and their respective development. From the main character to the lovely band of soldiers whose fates are intertwined. The author is very good at crafting characters. Certain individuals that you despise in the beginning get the development they deserve to become memorable and relevant even after they are long gone. Characters that start great become even better or more complex with time. Especially the MC. I adore all of them. Great stuff. They all deserve to be happy and loved.

I'm not really great at following war plots or political plans, but I had a great time with this war. Things HAPPEN and escalate very quick and I love that. It's not a slow burn plot which would still totally work for this kind of story. I'm not nearly knowledgeable enough about war to know if what is happening is realistic (Apart from a play from a certain bordering nation that even I definitionally knew was a head scratcher), but even though I usually don't enjoy this kind of genre, I'm having a blast with this one. I'm always interested to find out what happens next in the war.

Give this a shot. Even if you hate TS. Even if you hate war stories. Even if you want the main character to be a cheat soldier who can solo end the war. And if you dropped this somewhere in the first volume, I suggest you to give it another shot. The first arc is noticeably the weakest arc. I hate to say that "it gets good trust bro" but it really does.

This story is worth your time.

And the cherry on top, translation is very good. Solid work from multiple people or so I've heard. I hope this hard work carries to the end of the story, which is getting very close.

Will continued to stayed tuned till the bitter end. <<less

Wow.

I rarely wrote reviews on NovelUpdates but for this one, I felt a compulsion to write one. For those of you who came here thinking it's a 'youjo senki' wannabe, it is not. The story has a similar background and theme, but it focuses more on the emotional aspects and tragedy of war than military stories.

This story follows the life of an elite soldier (MC) and her feelings throughout the war. The MC is not an all-powerful soldier like that in youjo senki; she is just one of the victims... more>> dragged through war, succumbed to its violence, and prevailed. It tells the story not from the perspective of the 'protagonist of the world' but from one of the participants of the war.

This is the kind of story that aims to bring you what it felt like to be a soldier during a war. You will feel sad, melancholy, and wistful through the tragedy being told. There might be little plot holes here and there, and the military strategies being used here might not make much sense on a deeper level. However, if you came here for the feeling this book can bring you, you are at the right place. <<less

For as much praise as others have given it... it's kind of just okay-ish. It's not as bad as being a complete mess, but if you go in expecting some amazing and heartfelt story, you'll end up starkly disappointed. The characters feel flat most of the time, with only moments of being okay. The world itself feels empty and gray, which is perhaps fitting in one sense, but truthfully just feels neglected.

If I went in with lower expectations maybe I would've liked it more, but it's just not that interesting.... more>> Give it a try, see if you can connect with the characters, and keep expectations lower than the 5 star reviews would suggest. Maybe you'll come out with a higher opinion than I did. <<less

A masterpiece thats slightly marred by rushing things. I dont give this masterpiece praise to any webnovels, but this isnt just any webnonel, this is a real deal novel thats pretending to be a webnovel. It has problems, it has inadequacies. But its still one of the best.

Now you saw the title and dreamed this is some war hero protagonist story, then u will get disappointed for the first 30-40 chapters. And that disappointment may continue slightly in the first half of the novel. This is a medic's diary as... more>> the title suggest. If you expect some CoD things, wanna run and gun left and right, this novel isnt it, (at the beginning.) Even the MC learned it the hard way. You follow orders, you wanna stay alive, you see the hell thats created by war. Thats it.

This is a story about how war is hell, it has the same taste as those like All quiet on the western front. At least at the first half of the novel. It changes in the other half. If u cant read 30 chapters without dopamine rush and have chronic main character syndrome, either skip the first half to read the later half of the novel, or dont read.

Now to the inadequacies. To have this dark and gloomy atmosphere, author has a tendency to end the side characters really fast. Yes, It does give the sense of "you will die a dog's death in war and nobody will care" but its too rushed. Great characters with huge potential dies too randomly. They dont have enough backstory for us to feel the tragedy.

TS/GB is really unnecessary. The main character acts like little girl. The classic selfless, naive, gentle, weak, obedient healer girl type. This would be understandable if she wasnt reincarnated. But why are you SO afraid of brats who intimidate you around but actually less than half your mental age? They are just lowest grunts rookie Privates. Even after reading the later parts of the novel her personality still doesnt make sense, fully. Her personality really doesnt match her experiences, to the point where:

Spoiler

she was about to gangb*nged by enemy soldiers, she still wanna stay oobedient. She was about to get r*ped by one of her allies, she rushes to enemy trenches etc etc and she still doesnt wanna hide a knife or something to defend herself. (Btw dont worry, novel has no r*pe tag)

[collapse]

Now another thing to note. Both how the army acts and how strategies works feels decent for a novel, but not realistic enough. Its too malleable in places where it shoudlnt be, and its too hard in places where it shouldnt be. Just for the sake of the plot.

The force feeding of ideologies are also kinda annoys. Like how is the communist girl and that ideology is the worst evil. True or not I dont care, just dont force feed it. Its understandable it happens bec the author is Japanese but meh.

The romance is there and not there honestly. Its both unasked for and sub-par. Its ambiguous maybe, so you will understand. Its satisfied those who asked for it. While it didnt displeased too much to those who didnt want it. I would have preferred no romance but anyway.

The luck, coincidences and Deus ex-machina or plot armor is subtle, but it is there. Even if we attribute some to the MC's intuition and make it subtle. <<less

If you're looking for something that is going to induce heartache, then you've come to the right place. I threw myself into this without a lot of expectations but I was pleasently surprised -although I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece. Don't be deceived by the negative reviews. The character development goes very deep where even things that happen in the earlier chapters will continue to matter later on and have various implications (psychologially and on decision making). The world building is also very detailed however there may be some "plotholes"... more>> or things that only make sense because the author desires so, but it's not to the point where it becomes an issue (I've only noticed these because I was actively looking for such).

Overall, it's a must read in my opinion and I can't wait for the next chapters!

I usually don't leave reviews, but, I also want this story to receive so much more recognition and attention than it has. There will be a few minor spoilers in this review so be warned. I highly recommend reading this if you want a story with deep character progression and dramatic storylines. I don't recommend reading this if you just want pure action and heroism with an off-the-bat op character or something like that, because this story is much more grounded. The protagonist is human above all else and so... more>> is everyone else in this story. There are no "heroes" here. This story focuses much more on Touri's relations with the people around her, and her struggle to survive in a desperate and brutal war and her fight to maintain her sense of self and hope. With that out of the way please allow me to gush about this absolute masterpiece.

The writing in this story is so beautifully written that it almost felt as though nothing was wasted and that there was a purpose for damn near every action and event. The characters felt so real and alive that for the first time ever I felt as though I truly cared about each and every character. Every time I went to the next chapter it felt as though I was holding my breath, stuck anticipating what disaster were to come about. I felt genuine anxiety and despair in every chapter. I truly felt like I was watching someone fight and struggle through a war. Every hardship felt real and emotional, and the good times felt worrisome and fleeting, but, they also felt well-earned. The author does a very good job of manipulating your emotions, in many ways, you end up being able to feel the same emotions as Touri or her comrades. The character progression is amazing and watching Touri change throughout the story is both rewarding and heartbreaking. My main issues lie with the sometimes non-sensical battle strategies, however, that was never the main point of this novel. Another problem mainly towards the end of the novel is that some characters felt like they got cut short or died kind of s*upidly, however, even in those instances I feel like the characters overall were amazing. Arcs/Volumes 9 and 7 for me especially felt kinda off and weaker than the rest of the story, though there are many shining moments in those parts as well. I well and truly believe this novel deserves to have so much recognition for how well done the story is. This novel earned all 5 stars, and Touri earned her much needed rest. <<less

This is the first and probably the last review that I will ever made, but it is something that I must do. I want this story to be read and to receive all the recognition that it deserves, so I will make this into 3 parts: the first to convince those who haven't read it yet to read, by showing what expect and more important, what don't expect, all without spoilers; then a second part with a few selected spoilers for those yet not convinced; and for last, just some... more>> opinions with tons of spoilers for who already finished it.

I know that is a not an orthodox review, but I am not some expert doing a proper review, so I am not going to try to do it, there is plenty of people doing better than I can, so I am going to do something with other purpose. Sorry for any mistakes here, English isn't my first language and I am not used to write something like this; and sorry because this will be a bit long (I am a bit too excited).

1 -

A) what expect about the story: this is a war story (obviously), but it is not about genius strategies, glorious battles and great heros, it has it, but the focus is more about the people who fight the war and how it changes they. The author don't try to creat a whole new world from nothing, but uses our history to be the base; this gives an aspect of realism and allow the author to focus on the characters. Like some already pointed out on other reviews, you could take of the isekai, TS and magic out of the story and it would be basically the same. For those who don't like Isekai, don't worry, it is not like an ordinary annoying Isekai; for those who don't like TS, don't worry, the protagonist is totally a girl; for those who don't like magic, I don't know what are you doing here, but you might like it because there is no absurd magic (almost). Though it have some common places and tropes, it is the most unpredictable story that I have ever read, not only every one could die, everything will change many times with a simple sentence, it is shocking the amount of plot twists. And more important, the author don't think that you are an idiot, not every thing will be directly write, you will have to think.

B) what expect about the protagonist: the protagonist is a little girl called Touri, she has an rare ability to use heal magic and shield magic. Don't expect the normal grow in power that most isekais have, she starts totally useless in all meanings, but she never stops, slowly and certain she will grow up and learn from her mistakes. She is a great character and will suffer a loooooooot (normally when you like a character, you pray for they safety, but I literally pray for her death at some point, because it would be way better for her).

C) bad/annoying parts - it is not perfect. The translation is good (I recommend the WordPress Ozy, it is the best from the beginning to the end), but the author sometimes will repeat basically the same sentence two or three times, not a big deal and it is not that frequent. The main character lack self awareness, but this is far from other super annoying characters, it is just slightly and have an excellent explanation. Also some events don't make any sense, but are a few (arc 8 basically).

Though it might seems like I am trying to make you don't read it, I am trying to not set on you the wrong expectations. This is no ordinary story, and it is a master piece, I read it on 4 days and in the meantime I almost don't eat, don't sleep, don't do anything and even stops some addictions/bad habits forever because even weeks after I read it, I was still with my head full, reflecting of this absolutely immersing story, at the point that I don't mind anything else. So, I have a biiiiig last advice from anyone who will read it: I know that some of you might be starving for a story like this (even without knowing, like me), but don't devour every thing, be a gourmet and eat piece by piece of this story, feeling and reflecting slowly, so you don't end up like me. This is my regret and I hope that you listen it. Well, anyways, give a chance, the first arc is the weakest (still great), so I would recommend you to read at least until the second (still not the better) if possible, then the stories will drag you if it is for you.

Now with some spoilers selected to interest you if the first part don't convince you totally. I would not recommend seeing this because it could make your reading 'less better', but if you wouldn't read it anyways and have patience to read a bit more of my unnecessary long recommendation (sorry for that, I am too exited), why don't read it? The worse that will happen is... Better not think.

Spoiler

well, lets go.

First of all the protagonist Touri, is totally a girl and even love a boy/man, this is why the TS could be taken of with out problem. There is nothing that a TS normally have and there is no reason to make it a TS, besides some people preferences (I have already read a lot of TS on re library because even though it is not my personal preference, the story could be incredible on the same way a non TS). So don't go with bias.

Same for the Isekai, the protagonist don't use her past live experiences to rebuild the word and bla bla bla, the only reason why it is like that is for justifies the survival instincts and make some parallels with our world history.

About the protagonist being weak, don't worry, on the right time she will be an Ace (not just as a leader, but physically capable of turning the tide of the battle. She can even cut bullets and kill other aces), just be patient.

The most interesting part of the story is that Touri experience every side of the war, literally, from a simple soldier to a leader, from an austinian, to a rebel and a sabbathian. She also go from a pacifists inocente girl to a ruthless completely mad woman. It is very interesting and sad seeing she get more and more mad, and yet, more and more strong because of that (not only she, we saw a lot of characters being distorted by the war, in maaaamy ways). She also have enemies and friends on every side and kill both unfortunately (I want to cry, detail: I almost never cry, but this story make me crie twice, and if I don't desperately try to stop myself, I would cry even more).

I also love how the author manipulate us to hate, love, despise and glorify the same character/group/nation over and over, until we don't know what else think about nothing. Garback is a good example, we hate him, but the more the time pass, the more he is justified, until we see parts of him in every one, and why he did everything he did. He is one of my favorite characters along with Touri, Rodri, Sylph, Gorski and some others.

And it is it. If you still won't give a chance, sorry for wasting your time, I have nothing else to say.

[collapse]

Now for some opinions that I want a lot to share, with huge spoilers, just for who already finished everything.

Spoiler

it might seems obvious, but I just realized that sylph lost on purpose on the day after I finished it. I thought that she was so desperate with everything that she blunder, but she actually lost and die on purpose, staining her name forever for the sake of her country. This is very sad and make much more sense she go with Touri like: "even after all that I did, you will still manage to loose?!?!".

And about the continuation on the LN that Ozy is translating, after think a bit, Iris might not be the daughter of Bern and Remi, but Touri brainwashed. If it is this way, she come back to Sedol 10 years after the war, both her and Sedol are brainwashed to forget everything, and 20 years after the war we have Iris and Sedol not remembering Touri correctly. It would keep the two endings together and justify some holes, like Sedol not remembering nothing and Anita's quote at the end.

Or bern could still be alive at the end of the light novel, so he could have a child (the only reason that Touri don't grow up is the drugs that she uses, so to Iris look a child, she couldn't be a +20 years old woman). This would explain why Iris want to know about Bern crimes.

And I must say that I am divided with this continuation. From one, side I am sad that Touri still not have her happy ending with her son and is suffering more even after everything, also sad because her name was stained after everything that she have done for her county and beloved people. I also read only finished stories nowadays so I am quite of disappointed to see that I am once more having to wait years for an ending that may not come and could be horrible. But from the other side, if it has the possibility of having a better ending for everyone, especially sylph (doesn't even need to be Yuri, just her living a pacific hidden life with Touri is absolutely good), I am open to it. And at the other hand, it must be way more interesting from the point of view of someone reading the LN first to have this future shards.

And for last, I want to say that after the end of arc 4, it was the only time that I pray for a character that I like to die. While reading I was expecting an ending that everyone encounter at the afterlife, maybe even reincarnating at other peaceful world (we know that this is possible) or living together on heaven. But Touri wasn't able not even to rest in peace. It was the first and probably last time that a history will make me feel like this, I owe the most sincere thanks to the autor for everything, from the happiness to the sadness

This is, in my opinion, the greatest novel of all time.

Everyone should go in blind, and while there are some weak intermediate moments, Deus ex Machina plot armour in the most unexpected of manners, the finale was 100% worth it for me, including the many, many twists and turns.

This is no Youjo Senki clone, despite the author directly attributing inspiration from it, as well as the parallels.

Youjo Senki is something that serves to foil this one. Where Youjo Senki glorifies war in a complete power fantasy, this one hints at... more>> reality, making this (Aristotelian) Comedy-Tragedy the greatest antiwar webnovel of them all. <<less

I neither have the patience, nor the words to describe how I felt reading this. So far, I'm on my 3rd reread of this story. I've projected onto the MC too hard, the Platoon Commander Garback is the greatest of all time. I love everyone, I still can't stop crying when characters die.

God, this webnovel found a cheat code to my heart.

No matter how many times I try to close myself off and run away, I just can't help but love it all the same.

Don't suppress your emotions, just come... more>> to terms with them. <<less

To be frank this is still a pretty good story, and the author clearly tried to plan things in advance. Given the standard of ratings on this website the current rating, while a bit high, is very much justificable.

I did really enjoy the parts about daily life as a soldier, how soldiers fight and strategize in small scale military engagements, the rough conditions ... more>>

- those were generally great, made sense within the setting and made it feel real, even if dark and saddening.

However there are fairly enormous flaws. Quote from the author:

"The reason I wrote this work was because I got hooked on the anime version of Youjo Senki on Amazon Prime and watched it all in one go, and I decided to write about modern warfare in a fantasy world... Without coming up with the plot. I have a bad habit of writing whatever comes to mind. I entirely improvised Chapter 1."

Message to be had? This is a story focused on tragedy, on character drama, not on the actual reality of war or realistic outcomes/military maneuvers.

Firstly, while this is a story on war, the tactics and strategies written are asinine and simplistic, something purely decorative to serve as plot tools to justify the progression of the war in certain directions. Strategies like multi-point simultaneous breakthrough (instead of concentrating troops towards a weakness or point in the enemy formation, just send them at multiple!) are used repeatedly by various commanders, each seeing it as the pinnacle of modern war strategy. Incompetent military commanders are not defined by bad strategies but rather by the complete absence of them and just tell their troops to push forward, and survive because their subordinates or collaborators try to exploit some clever (/s) vulnerabilities to turn the war around. Armies of tens or even hundreds of thousands are routinely routed with leaders killed or gravely wounded with a single "masterstroke" strategy, sometimes because the leaders just charged ahead, or because the HQ was undefended because of some distraction or something, and I guess the other soldiers just died or vanished spontaneously. Enemy countries will seem on the brink of collapse, only for miraculously huge reinforcements to show up from other powers with very little rationale or description of international politics. So called strategic geniuses that turn the tide of war seem to only shine because of the profound incompetence of any other strategist around, with "genius" level tactics winning because they tried not being sitting ducks, using surprise attacks, or being able to predict the opponents' move as if war was just rock paper scissors...

Countries will try to ethnically cleanse enemy nations upon victory to avoid resentment, and when offered unconditional surrender will continue to fight, then suddenly find themselves on the brink of ruin and extermination because of internal conflict or external enemies suddenly deciding to jump in to support the losing party... only when the enemy is on the losing side of course.

This part I'm less critical about, but characters tend to be extremely nationalistic and support their country no matter what, as each character other than the MC always seems eager to massacre soldiers or even innocents from enemy countries, and rarely if ever try to make peace or accept surrender, each side always pillaging, plundering, massacring enemy villages and not believing/caring that their own side is doing the same.

Spoiler

One "genius" girl repeatedly described as "kind-hearted" who becomes a pretty good friend to the MC is from a different nation. Next time we see her, she's unhesitatingly helping other countries exterminate and invade the MC's country because apparently it'd save her own (very little explanation or story telling for this), and the next time they meet apparently she now hates the MC for... defending her country from soldiers she herself sent attacking and killing the MC's allies and friends, or for obstructing her plans.

The coalition she's helping invade the MC's nation sometimes listens to her orders/advice with devastating effectiveness, or sometimes rebels/resists her instructions (and hence failing abjectly), depending on where the plot next needs to go (hard to know when the author hates explaining or justifying plot developments). In addition, her genius-level tactics feel like cheating, as she repeatedly overcomes significant military disadvantage with simple strategies and her soldiers are almost always capable of striking at command/communication posts and HQ with ease and blazing fast speed against practically zero resistance. Effectively, it just feels like her soldiers are given a massive stat boost when under her command rather than succeeding because of human ingenuity and that this "genius" girl has some limited form of omniscience when it comes to the battlefield with unmatched communication abilities to reach her troops.

[collapse]

Basically every character you meet will die. I actually quite like the tragedy and story, and did actually cry several times, but over time it felt increasingly fake, because it's clear that the author is simply not intelligent enough or willing to make logical/more detailed plot/military developments to make them feel natural. they will simply flip over the table when things are going relatively well for the MC in basically a few paragraphs to essentially say: "And then things suddenly got worse." It's impossible to take the war seriously because of how artificial it feels.

The "romance" (Warning massive spoiler/important event in the plot) :

Spoiler

At some point the MC apparently falls in love with a guy who later is mortally wounded (guess what, she finds out about her feelings right at that moment).

In previous chapters she showed no particular romantic thoughts, and then at some point he's dead, leaving the MC constantly and repeatedly rejecting others (fair), because according to the narration she's loyal and wants to remain faithful, thinking that her body belongs to the "husband" she spontaneously "married" with a kiss in around two minutes or less after she apparently discovered her love for him as he lay there coughing up blood and dying. One might say it was foreshadowed/implied with the unreliable narrator trope, and that's fair, though the lightning fast emotional transition from 'Hey I'm sure we're just friends' to 'My love for him is eternal' after a single kiss (the guy is dead by the end of it) is still disconcerting. Consider it an attempt by the author to make their work slightly different from other TS stories where the MC, despite having turned into a woman, still seems distinctly male/engages in a yuri romance/isn't really treated as a woman

I generally try to be pretty strict when evaluating stories, and try to avoid doing it immediately after finishing a story, to get some emotional distance. So I could certainly make some critiques of this story, and point out some things that might have been handled better. For example, the idea of advancing from actual medieval weaponry to fairly modern firearms in the span of a decade stood out to me as a bit of an absurdity, magic or not.

And on the note of magic, whilst maybe a bit better... more>> done than in its inspiration, Youjo Senki, I certainly feel the story had a bit of a missed opportunity. Aside healing magic and a few types of magic meant for combat, surely there could have been a lot more different applications for magic in a world war scenario? I think that's something I'd personally really focus on, if I ended up taking the same premise, of modern, industrial scale warfare in a world where magic exists.

But I don't really feel the need to extensively nitpick the work. Regardless of some small missteps along the way, it was an incredibly immersive read. The visceral portrayal of the horrors of this type of warfare left an impression that easily overshadowed small quibbles about realism. It's a genuinely memorable story that really stands out on its own merits. To point out just one of the things that stands out, the characters were often likable, and even the ones that weren't meant to be liked were always interesting, and interacted in very authentic ways. The elements of military strategy discussed are plausible enough to also make the portrayal of various geniuses believable, which is where depictions of warfare stories can often fall short. <<less

Couldn't wait for the translation, so I dove into the raw and finished the novel. It’s hands-down the best web novel I've read this year. Though inspired by Youjo Senki, it sets itself apart with a stronger focus on the brutal realities of war and the intense struggles of individuals trying to escape the relentless cycle of violence. It’s not without flaws—there are a few subplots that wasn't fully explored, and some developments feel like they could be handled better. I genuinely hope the author will consider refining these areas... more>> in the book version, or maybe in the manga. <<less
