Tang Heng gets into trouble while playing in a band and meets Li Yuechi, who comes to his rescue. As they get to know each other, Tang Heng falls in love with Li Yuechi despite their polar opposite family backgrounds, but Li Yuechi is imprisoned for stabbing Tang Heng’s uncle. Six years later, Tang Heng is now a university teacher. He’s reunited with Li Yuechi again during a poverty alleviation project and the truth of what happened back then is revealed little by little…
Tang Heng witnesses the cruelty and reality of the world and the dark side of people. He suffers from the blow brought by the truth but never forgets the original heart and faces it bravely… Through the main character’s experience, the story makes us believe more firmly that as long as we have justice in mind and go forward, we can definitely see the light.

This is an excellent read for readers who are looking for an angsty novel! You will definitely experience heartbreak and heartache, but you will be rewarded with a HE.

The story is set in modern-day China and alternates between the present day and the past, weaving together two timelines to slowly reveal all the details. The MC Tang Heng is a sociology professor who unexpectedly encounters a character from his past when on a work trip to a small remote village. During this trip, he learns the truth of things in... more>> the past that had been hidden from him. When the flashback begins, Tang Heng is a spoiled rich kid in who is in a band with his friends as the lead singer. His actions and thoughts start out pretty juvenile, and it’s clear that he really hasn’t seen much of the world. His first few interactions with the ML Li Yuechi are a bit antagonistic but this is not enemies-to-lovers.

I really enjoyed the progress of the story - how the MC gradually matures and starts considering others, how the MC and ML navigate this relationship where they come from polar opposite backgrounds, and how we learn the entire truth. The author exposes ugly parts of human nature and society, but tempers the overall serious tone with some humor - the bandmates are really funny when they rip on each other.

Overall I would rate this novel around 4.5 because I wanted to see more justice imparted. Rounding up to 5 stars.

This novel leans towards the mature and realistic side with its tone and content so don’t expect face-slapping or much fluff. But it’s definitely worth reading! <<less

My take on what I consider a very difficult novel to read.

At first, I believed the MC’s issues were due to immaturity from being raised as a spoiled rich kid. But now am convinced he was ... more>>

from early on. Possibly triggered by his father's death when he was young. Or maybe it also had to do with his annoying mother.

The ML has known abject poverty his entire life and this makes him feel unworthy. He’s convinced that everything comes with a price. Nothing is free; even happiness. It’s sad that he can’t see just how much he’s done for his family, friends and lover.

These issues colored most of the story. The MC was insecure in every part of his life and that manifested in paranoia, lack of trust, and having swift reactions to events without thinking them through. He did finally get it together but it took time.

The premise of the story is the fallout from academic cruelty and corruption. It’s not pleasant to read unless you are drawn to unrelenting angst. I struggled to get through each chapter until near the end.

There is a happy ending, but holy cow, it takes forever to get there.

Thanks to KarateChopMonkey (who took over at some point) for a flawless translation. <<less
