In her previous life, Mei Wushuang was a useless footnote under the dazzling light of her eldest sister’s story. Her own family, led by her ambitious sister, plotted to seize her marriage and dowry until she broke off the original engagement and married another man. Only after seeing her eldest sister marrying Prince Wei in her place did Wushuang suddenly see the truth.

Years later, Prince Wei, Ji Yang, ascended the throne as Emperor. Her eldest sister became the virtuous empress that everyone praised, but Wushuang’s husband “sold his wife for glory” and offered her to her brother-in-law, the Emperor.

She became the Lady Fengtian, a title whispered in hushed tones. Everyone said that she was a minister’s wife but had defiled the palace and bewitched the Emperor with her charm.

“If the Mei family desires the Crown Prince,” Ji Yang declared, “he will be yours to birth.”

Then she died, and when she opened her eyes again, she had come back to life, back to that moment when her eldest sister had proposed the fateful marriage swap.

——

The world only knew that Prince Wei, Ji Yang, was capricious, cruel by nature, and bloodthirsty, earning him the title of “Wife Killer.” However, they did not know that Prince Wei and Ji Yang were two souls sharing one body.

The true Prince Wei was calm and restrained, a man of hidden depths and calculated ambition. The crazy Ji Yang acted recklessly and was violent and willful.

For Prince Wei, marrying Mei Wushuang was a duty, the fulfillment of a promise, for Ji Yang, she was his medicine, and also his life.

Prince Wei never imagined that one day he would be jealous of his other half, a jealousy that would haunt him across two lifetimes.

Pretty solid fluffy read with BIG BEAUTY MC and her super OP ML (can I count them as two MLs lmao). MC is not your reborn-all-knowing-powerful protagonist going around slapping faces so don't expect that. It's actually almost slice of life with the romance a very prominent part of the story and I find MC and ml's interactions to be sweet and natural, so kudos to the author for that (also thanks for the author managing to basically give me two MLs but still a 1vs1 pairing hahaha).

It was a smooth read. Face slapping didn’t go as hard and overall the FL was kind and positive. It was refreshing to read about someone who didn’t go crazy seeking revenge. The ML was OP. The ending seemed convoluted to me. Also, the chemistry was decent, nothing to squeal over.

Should have given 3/5 now that I realise it.

Spoiler

The entire tomb/musoleum part seemed unnecessary and the 25 chapter dive into the past life gave me headache

First of all, please adjust your mentality before reading this novel especially if you like strong and OP MC.

Let’s be open minded, MC was raised to be timid and weak with low self esteem since baby. Even she has the chance of rebirth, she was not suddenly OP or became genius. She just became clear headed and more courageous. In my opinion, her character is realistic.

ML is OP and domineering which is a perfect match for FL/MC. I think every ancient women and at least half of modern women are... more>> longing for partners / husbands that can be relied on. If you have someone that you could relied on everything, why should you be a strong woman?. Because of circumstances, fates, bitter reality we could only be strong and relied on ourselves.

Last thing is don’t forget this is novel and author has freedom to create her / his own story.

Overall, this novel is enjoyable and light read. Even the MC is weak but this is much better than other novels of rebirth that make MC suddenly became genius and OP after rebirth although in her previous life, she was s*upid and weak. <<less

Underrated.

This isn't Mask Feast's strongest work, but it's still worth a read for how cleverly it plays with power dynamics, layered characterization, and that memorable dual-ML execution. It doesn't deserve such a low rating—it's overall well written, and the translation quality is strong.

The novel thrives on layered schemes and morally grounded motives—each major player has a reason for their choices, and the plot respects their intelligence. Everyone is out for something, and that realism helps the story feel grounded. The political moves make sense, the side characters aren't flat, and... more>> no one makes decisions "just because plot."

What truly sets this novel apart is the male lead's split persona. The dual-identity trope isn't new, but it's rarely done with this level of nuance. The ML isn't just "cold in public, warm in private"—he's genuinely two people, each with his own distinct personality and emotional logic. The internal conversations between the two personas were rather funny, the contrast especially compelling, and easily the highlight for me. Watching the FL navigate her relationship with both sides of him adds a strange, twisty charm to the romance.

The FL herself is competent and adaptable. She learns how to survive in an environment where everyone's either lying, plotting, or both. Her growth never feels forced, and she holds her own even as the schemes around her deepen. Normally I find the trope of a weak FL irritating, but here it was quite well done.

That said, a few things didn't quite land. The age gap between the leads is a pet peeve of mine—even if it's era-appropriate, I couldn't help wishing the FL had been allowed to grow up more before marriage and pregnancy (always gives me creeps even though I know it's historically accurate). A slightly older FL or even a younger ML would've made their dynamic easier to buy into. But I do agree that their relationship did feel somewhat natural despite the flaws.

Some timeline jumps between current and past lives also felt abrupt, and the mausoleum arc... I'm still not convinced it was necessary. I feel the past life story would have been better presented as a complete extra rather than part of main story.

But like I said, still worth a read. This is one of the better novels. <<less

I found some parts of this novel quite engaging- eg FL was ok, not as dumb as she thinks (as others have mentioned) and also the dual personality of the ML was definitely a different take on the usual ML. Here the ML is 2 in 1 - cold and scheming and at same time, impulsive, martial arts type. However, FL is really too much a Mary Sue in this life. Everything goes her way and ML is always there to save her. After a while it gets boring. I... more>> skipped towards the end. <<less

This was an interesting book to rate for me, because I personally don't think it's exceptional, on paper I don't think the MC or MLs or the plot are to my liking, but I still looked forward to each chapter release. The translation definitely played a part, it was really good.

The MC is weak, foolish. naive and cowardly, but while the book constantly calls her s*upid, I don't think she is. She's pretty competent in gauging the ML's mood and pleasing him, and can string together clues quite well. So,... more>> it was a bit weird for me, that she was called s*upid constantly. She really is weak though, relies mostly on the ML to do things for her. She isn't too annoying, but I was frustrated her a few times, because she couldn't communicate, but that was mostly in her previous life. My main problem with her personality is, one, she never gets more self-reliant, two, in the end of the book she's called the ideal woman men like (one character tells to another one, that she should be more like MC)... and again, literally the ML does almost everything for her, she's only proactive in the first part of the story, from then on, she's mostly passive. She isn't someone people should aspire to be. There would be no problem with that, because again she's a character who is kind, gently and benevolent and adapts very well to situation and is much smarter than what the story makes her out to be, she has plenty of good qualities and is a well-rounded character! But I feel like the story by the end explicitly sends the message that she's the right kind of woman? Maybe I'm just overreacting.

There are two MLs in this story. One is your typical cunning, competent, cold emperor ML, one that's very common, and the other one is the childish, arrogant, playful and impulsive. While I don't really care for either of them individually, I think the dual soul disorder was very well executed and made the ML a lot more complex. I think the reason why he likes her is s*upid, and I personally would be pissed if someone would like me for that reason. I think she likes him, because he treats her well, but I think that makes some sense. Other than that I think they're well-matched and work together. There's a weird age gap between them (13 years, he knew her when he was 16-17 and she was 3-4, and she's 15 and he's 38 when they meet again), which isn't mentioned often, but makes me really uncomfortable when it's brought up.

Now one thing I have to mention if you expect revenge or face-slapping from this story... don't. The MC never wants revenge, which is fine, but it annoyed me that some characters don't any repercussions. It might be because her previous life didn't really end miserably and the people who wronged her suffered some consequences in that life, but still.

Spoiler

Mei Wuxia (her cousin) 's misfortune is only revealed in the extras, which considering how much she schemed and how guilt-free she was, it's a bit late, but to be fair she faced a lot of misfortune but escaped every time. Princess Minghui is the one I'm pissed about. In the previous life she someone got the bad ending, and I think it was equal to what she had done in that life, but in this life?? She gives aphrodisiac to a violent s*umbag of a man so he would defile MC... and then she's got the nerve to be angry? Gets scolded, and then she blames Mei Wuxia and does the same thing to her? She then gets to marry into a family that treats her well, a husband who loves her. That's her reprecussion? Sure she gets mad about her husband possibly accepting a concubine, and gets scolded by the Empress Dowager to be more like MC, but other than that that's almost as happy of an ending as it gets?
