The boundless universe was filled with all sorts of wonders.

I, Chen Ping’an, only have one sword, to move mountains, turn the seas upside down, suppress demons, deal with gods, pluck stars, break rivers, destroy cities, and open the heavenly abode!

My name is Chen Ping’an, Ping’an* of Peace, and I am a swordsman.

The Midland world was full of wonders.

In the center of the world, there was a scholar who had once used a sword to slash out a waterfall of the Milky Way. This was the person he was the most proud of.

At the edge of the East Sea’s cliffs, there was a nameless Daoist who was unwilling to ascend to the peak of a mountain. He only wished for a cool breeze to brush against his face.

In the Western Pure Land, there was an old monk who liked to treat people to chicken soup and tell stories.

In the southern border of the Wilderness, there was a blind painter who controlled golden-armored puppets that were as tall as mountains to move the hundred thousand mountains, creating an embroidered picture.

An impoverished youth who grew up in the north. One day, he saw tens of thousands of Sword Kinesis Immortals above him, like a swarm of locusts crossing the border.

He wanted to see for himself the scholar that the storyteller had mentioned, the surging tides of the East Sea, the vast swamps of sand in the west, and the majestic mountains of the Southern Wasteland.

Thus, one day, the youth picked up the wooden sword and began to descend south.

Notes:

* Ping’an means peace

** The four directions here are just the four sides of the map of China and the earth. As for the World of Righteousness, it was only one of the four “World”.

When you know what angle to approach this novel from, it loses most of the complaints people tend to have about the "filler". This novel is a coming of age novel more than anything. The whole premise of this novel, even in the blurb, is that the MC wishes to explore the world and achieve his dreams, seek towards his aspirations of character. Power has always been secondary for him. Yes, it began out of necessity, but it's little more than peace, discipline, the desire to protect and survive, and... more>> awe that pushes him. These "filler" arcs are not filler if you see it through the lens of him slowly experiencing new things in life and growing/learning from them, which is his primary goal. It is still a cultivation novel so of course there needs to be power progression for a character like him who isn't already near or at the peak, but it's philosophy and character development (whether it's learning more about the character or them learning from the experience) that takes up the main focus. I do have to admit, the world building can be jarring at times, but I believe it's moreso an issue of execution than the information actually being redundant to the plot. Another issue with the novel is its POV switching. I'm one to believe that POV switching, if it's going to be lengthy, should be done only after the major event occurring or broken into small chunks of interactions during the event. To give a scenario, take an action scene. MC is fighting like crazy and things are escalating and then BOOM, we get a long chapter between (may be split into several parts) of some important spectators interacting and commenting on what's happening and why. Rather than that occurring, it'd be better for that POV switch to occur after the fight and make a hybrid between a recap and the interactions that occurred during the fight. This or during the action scene, it could be 70% action and 30% the conversation between the important people that's there to add nuance and lore and world building in each chapter. Also, as a brief mention, it can be very difficult to keep up with all the information, and let me tell you, most of that information will come back in some shape or form to be the plot device used to explain an event. In numerous cases, you'll have to be able to reference the world building information from however long ago in order to make true sense of what's happening and why. It can be very troublesome to have such a good memory. This novel practically requires you to take notes to fully understand it.

Besides that, my issues really ends rhere. Characters are VERY well written and will grow on you, im convinced of it if the author wants you to. This isn't to say that any of their deaths will strike some huge chord in your heart or whatever but you find yourself feeling fond of the characters and feel they make everything more vibrant and real and that they're all important in some way. Id argue that the cultivation pace is fine. I didn't like how long the MC was without cultivation but from there on, his cultivation progresses well especially with the system that the world appears to have. It's very big on enlightenment and spirituality, which doesn't come easy. I could say more but I'm kinda out of time. Do try the novel with the lenses of it being a slow paced coming of age novel. <<less

This web novel is a bit convoluted and vague at times for my tastes, but holy sh*t it has some top tier character interactions, not to mention some actually interesting villains (sometimes). I wouldn't put it up there with the upper echelons of cultivation novels like Ze Tian Ji, Path Towards Heaven, Daoist Gu, and Lord of the Mysteries, but its comfortably above average.

The protagonist is a fundamentally generic Xianxia protag, though made a lot more interesting through actually having non psychopathic morals and having some pretty sh*t luck. He... more>> also knows how to set boundaries with women who are interested in him because he only loves one girl. The supporting cast is incredibly strong for a xianxia web novel, and honestly with how slow paced the story is, thank god. Don't get it twisted, this story can be really slow paced at times, sometimes unbearably slow, so if you aren't a pretty patient reader this probably isn't for you, as narrative payoff can take a while. The supporting cast interacting with the MC is the fundamental draw to the story imo.

In fact, I'd argue that often I wasn't necessarily bothered by the slow pace, but more so the cast the protagonist was stuck with at the time story progression was at a crawl. When the protagonist was surrounded by interesting characters with unique dynamics like Cui Chan, I wasn't bothered at all by the incredibly slow pace because the character interactions drew me so much, but there were definitely times when the revolving cast was weaker. Fortunately, it wasn't too often. The fight scenes and story arcs often ended in anti-climaxes, which means that the character moments are all the more important to justify the overall unorthodox direction the story can sometimes take. I actually don't mind the anti-climaxes too much, as it kept me on my toes a bit, making the story less predictable.

World building is another focus of the story, and it was a bit hit or miss for me, where at times it provided welcome character to the world, and at others it felt like it clogged the pace considerably. That said, I do admire just how much thought the author put into all the different continents and empires within their world, and their willingness to just let the characters spend time on what can sometimes feel like meaningless detours. It really feels like a grand adventure where every mountain is a hurdle.

As for some other smaller aspects of the story like romance, it was surprisingly good, especially for a xianxia web novel. The heroine is a fairly refreshing character in a similar way as the main heroine from Histories Strongest Senior Brother. The author of this story isn't a hack like HSSB's though, so she's a lot more well executed, and there were some genuinely touching moments where you felt the weight of both characters feelings (low standard I know). The translation is solid, and they do a great job of explaining the various poems and references to east Asian philosophy for the sake of the reader.

Overall, I'd say this is a story that's worth trying, but it definitely won't be for a lot of people. It's that slow paced. That being said, if you aren't so caught up with the destination, and are willing to enjoy some pointless detours where characters get to shine through their interactions with each other, then you might get a lot out of this web novel. God damn is it long though, 366 chapters felt like 2000 with how high the word count was. <<less

I enjoyed this for a while but the author has a tendency to go off on very long tangents. A dozen chapters can go by where the main character isn't mentioned and the active characters are newly sprung into existence for some unknown purpose unrelated to anything.

I assume the author is trying to make the world seem larger with multiple plot lines going on simultaneously but it isn't done well and the plot lines never converge on each other so the side stories are seemingly random things that should be... more>> edited out completely.

Unfortunately a dozen chapters of "stuff" seems to be happening more often by chapter 300 so I can't be bothered to continue.

Was great while the author focused on the main character though! <<less

I very much enjoyed this novel, it's in some parts similar to Mao Ni's works in that there's a lot of plotting and scheming going on. The first book is kind of confusing and the MC is almost a side character until the end of book 1.

The only real complaint I have about this book is that the cultivation stages, what happens at each stage and how you rise to the next level, aren't really explained. At some point it's explained what happens in the first 4-5 tiers of martial... more>> arts cultivation but how am I supposed to remember that when it actually happens a hundred chapters later? The cultivation aspect is the weakest part of this cultivation novel and there's different kinds of cultivation as well; Martial Arts, Qi (the normal kind) and spiritual (dieties etc), I think? Does Daoism and Confucianism have their own cultivation levels? Almost 400 chapters in and I don't know

The best part for me is the adventure, seeing different things in the world, and meeting new characters, and the interactions between them and the MC. Seeing what kind of nefarious plots they stumble across, or are the target of, on their adventures is great. The characters are all fleshed out and have their own quirks and views on the world which are well explained.

Personally I love all the exposition and explanations that don't serve a real purpose, but I can see other's not enjoying it. <<less

Sorry. Not my cap of tea. Everything went well, I liked the pace, world building, characters interaction. But I tend to notice small things that burn my bu*t really hard. And when the MC, young peasant kid (without training), managed to ambush and kill 2 grown ass cultivators. That became a no-go flag for me. Also, from the author's side it explains like "Well, he did a lot of manual labor, had good stamina and all that sh*t you know". WTF? Well, the slavеry wasn't a thing if it was... more>> enough.

EDITED

Spoiler

I was thinking of giving it two more chances, but only if I get bored. Givin it 1 strike so far
