Upgrade Specialist in Another World

Just as a gamer found an overpowered skill book called ‘Item Upgrade’ in the hottest virtual reality role-playing game on Earth, something happened to the game’s system, causing his soul to leave his body and go to another dimension. Common sense dictates that he would be born anew then become the greatest overlord of this world by making use of his advanced knowledge. Not in this case! He was already dead. Only some fragments of his soul and that skill book managed to get into that dimension and merge with an ordinary common youngster called Bai Yunfei.

This was the enormous Tianhun continent, where humans could be said to have no limits. There was a group of humans here who could cultivate the power of their own souls then control their bodies, the natural elements and even other people’s souls with that power! These special beings were called — soul cultivators. Come witness how the several fragments of the dead inter-dimensional traveler’s soul and that skill book, which was not governed by the laws of this plane, were going to help Bai Yunfei become a legendary soul cultivator and craftsman!

At first the title was a major turn off but then I decided to read it anyway, and it wasn't a complete waste of time, MC gets an obviously major advantages compared to rest, but not so far as to easily slay anyone... so it's still fair I guess?

pros :

ruthlessness is enough

... more>> not a complete twat

fast paced but yet not overbearingly fast

typical xianxia world with the twist of the MC

cons:

MC is still "kidlike" no experience whatsoever in any matter, mortal or immortal world

too weak but yet aloof, hope this won't go on too far

Anyway it's still the beginning, so I'll definitely keep on reading, recommended <<less

While there are many issues with this novel, the one thing that irks me the most, and the reason I decided to drop it is the fact that the author shamelessly makes the enemies scale to the power level of the MC instead of trying to think of new and interesting settings. To the point that the MC can break into a sect and lay waste to it killing scores of disciple with impunity until the headmaster himself has to take action, only for that same sect latter on to... more>> have several figures on par with the headmaster at the time popup out of nowhere. <<less

Spoiler

if you are looking for an arrogant MC that loves showing off his power and curb stomps everyone without setbacks while bragging about "the great me" then this is not the novel for you. The MC remains about a half step ahead or behind his peers throughout most of the novel and he loses/ retreats more than once. His cheat has a lot of limitations, he's left to figure everything out without help and it's not like he can just upgrade equip infinitely, in over 1000ch the highest he's upgraded was 14. He's moderate for a cultivation MC and while he's neither a genius nor a moron, he has moments of both. He also suffers from bouts of Thrice Reckless Disease which causes occasional lapses in judgment.

Spoiler

also, what happened with him being part of the fate sect? He passed on the cultivation technique but kept the ring and the spear and everything else so I thought he was still a member of the fate sect. He even gets help from his seniors from the fate sect from time to time. Did joining the crafting school automatically negate his being a part of the fate sect? I wish the author would have explained that part better

[collapse]

yes, there are aspects of this story that will irritate anyone, especially when there's a hundred-plus ch of constant fighting to slog through, or the repetitive escalator fights every. Single. Time. The MC walks into a town/city. The author isn't talented in writing fights so I started skipping from the first page of each fight to the end. It's not a harem, (a plus), but the female lead has little personality and exists mostly to be rescued and as an accessory for the MC. The gun fu was lame and the author seems to have realized and stopped using it, other than the occasional show, after that single arc. And there are some fairly big plot holes that aren't addressed so far. But I quite liked a few of the arcs, like the soul beast forest one, and the good parts help make up for the bad ones. Since I've dropped the last few novels I tried to read by c200 and the highest they've rated was a 2, the fact that I've managed to read over 1000ch means the story is interesting enough.

Spoiler

I love that his soul beast is the one who levels up/ gains exp by killing monsters or people and not the MC. His only game-like ability is his upgrade skill

[collapse]

now about his stalker,

Spoiler

a big wig jr sect leader being that obsessive about some low ranked shmuck made no sense to begin with and to declare him his arch-enemy made the main villain look idiotic and foolish, not scary. All I can think is that he had some kind of love for/crush on the MC and was uncomfortable with his feelings so he decided to focus his entire life on trying to kill the low-level guy.

even the MC is confused and points out that they have no great hatred or anything once he learns who's behind all those assassins and him being set up. At that point, he doesn't even know what sect the guy belongs to or what their plans are. This obsession makes the fact that he keeps losing and running away once the MC gets stronger something funny, which I don't think the author intended. Yeah the MC hates him now but he brought it on himself by constantly seeking him out and causing problems. If he'd never bothered I doubt the MC would even remember his name by now.

[collapse]

so far I want to rate this at a 3.5, but the editing is terrible with mixed-up tenses, strange sentence structure and word mix-ups like 'memories' instead of 'methods' or the like. I actually counted more than a dozen misplaced words in just one chapter and it happens in just about all of them. In the end, I'm giving it a 3 for now.

The Idea of the story had potential but the writing is terrible. The protagonist seems to be s*upid. they take the hard path more often than not and never learn from their mistakes. The author seems to struggle with fleshing out ideas and descriptions, instead opting to repeat the same thing in different ways for one to 4 paragraphs when they need to hit word count. He loves to say "X doesn't even need words to describe it" or variations of that. The author also makes the protagonist do s*upid... more>> things, repeatedly, to advance the story and add twists. effectively the protagonists s*upidity is the authors crutch, yet our protagonist is a genius... often the author tries to add lines intended to sound deep but just end up sounding silly.

If that weren't enough, the translator (editor?) seems to have a terrible grasp of the English language. It is not rare to see words that are inappropriate in context with the rest of the sentence inserted, often with the same mistakes repeated. common phrases are butchered, sometimes leading to self contradictory lines. lots of unnecessary addition of words as well as absence of necessary words. Double negatives abound.

Between the inexperienced author and the translators ignorance of the English language, this novel becomes very hard to enjoy. As I tried to read this novel I just keep being reminded of the invisible dragon (look it up on this site if you don't know that it is). <<less

I really think you should try to read this novel if you are tired of the generic MC in the majority of the chinesse novels. Yeah he starts a bit naive, maybe dumb, but just look at the enviroment he grew up in... I remember some coments saying hes dumb becouse he thinks hes slow when in reality he's increadibly fast cultivating... well he's new to that world then, no one told him anything so... duh!. And Even then, overpowered?, godly cultivation speed? - nope aaaand nope, yeah he's stronger... more>> than average for his level, cos of his equipment, and he's faster than average, but not something totally unheard off. Contrary to the majoerty of the wuxias the MC is not a GOD that can go around killing enemies 3 steps ahead of him, he's simply better than normal and even that has a justification. And again, a refreshing MC that is not a complete jerk that goes around mass killing and thinking he's noble because someone looked him badly first...

My conclusion, its quite worth to read it, simply to break from the norm, its not perfect in any way, but is... refreshing. <<less

I actually quite like this novel. It can be a little boring the first few chapters (as you would expect to establish word building) but not too slow IMO that you would end up wanting to drop it.

It's refreshing to see an MC that has still remained as kind as he can without being taken advantage of too much. He still helps other people as best as he could and refrains from pointless slaughter. Sure he did some dumb emotional things at the first book but he has learned... more>> to pacify his feelings and calmed down later on. He's really OP now but has still not shown too much arrogance, at least IMO.

It's also refreshing to see how he has built his way to the top without previous world knowledge as his arsenal. Not saying I don't like those, but it's refreshing to see another way.

The romance is okay. It's there but it's not the main focus of the story ib any way. I think it's the author's way to spice things up in the story.

I honestly think this is an understated novel and you guys should check it out. <<less

I would probably have rated this a 3 if it weren't for the disappointment factor. See, this is basically an average, nondescript cultivation novel with no major bad points or good points. If you've read a few cultivation novels you won't find any surprises. It's just that I expected more character from an average person who's forced to use a brick as a weapon at the beginning, but he quickly becomes just like any other xianxia protagonist (cunning, brutal, loyal to friends... except when doing something else would move the... more>> plot along of course). No growth or anything towards that, he's just suddenly like that.

I recommend reading the first couple of chapters so you know how the "cheat" works, and the first few fights are entertaining enough. If you like the concept of the cheat you'll enjoy the novel to some extent. If the upgrade system doesn't really interest you, you might as well forget this novel exists. <<less

It start nice and okay story to enjoy. Not fascinating to the point you cant stop yourself to continue read it, just it is refreshing to read. The MC has good senses, cold headed and worked systematically. Think before act. Not that someone who coward or dont dare to do something unexpected. However it all changed since he join the school. He became hot headed. Especially that scene where his lover got hit. I cant accept so many of his decision, literally skip half of the chapter, reading the book... more>> became a torture so better drop it. <<less

Don't let the title and the picture fool you, it's just like a Xianxia with a little twist. I like it so far, the MC is quite original and not so ruthless like many other Xianxia MC's. He has a clear mind, trying to live without much bloodshed but is not afraid to act if it is to protect the weak etc. Try the first chapters, it will give you a feel if this novel is for you. I would recommend it!

It's still under 10 chapters, but it's very interesting! I can't quite put my finger on it yet, but it doesn't feel like a typical xianxia. Also, the beginning of the story is hilarious. At the very least, check it out because He-man is translating. Will probably edit this later when there are ~50 chapters.

This is a 1 star review but the Upgrade Technique cranked it to 3 stars. That's cheating!!!

This is a classic cultivation/system novel (system limited to displaying game like stats and upgrading weapons).

The upgrade gizmo was more interesting early on, it turned low level items into magical. Its not as fascinating when it turns 1000 damage item into a 1200 damage one. Despite authors attempts to add some deviations later on, it's not really enough to carry the story.

This story suffers terribly from "young master syndrome". This is how the novel... more>> starts (a young master feels offended by MC, captures him, etc.) and gets worse multiple fold by the time MC reaches the city where every chapter is some s*upid young master thinking he can off MC.

If the antagonist is not some young master or other. It is some elder or other. Not much variation there. Bad guys are kept around too long / get recycled. They keep coming back for more since MC doesn't kill his opponents half of the time.

There is hints to some larger plot but it takes ages to develop, if it ever does at all. The real bad guys stay in the back ground, smile and wave boys, smile and wave, and keep sending people to MC but never enough to actually punch through his plot armor. Well.

In the end MC is so powerful that early beginner zone are "upgraded" to match him. Whatever culitvation level MC reaches suddenly there are tons of people that level around or his old acquaintances "suddenly broke through". If not he'd be stronger than even the top elders of his own school.

It's readable if you need something that doesn't occupy brain cells. Unfortunately it lacks the, well, anything to make it stand out. <<less

It was enjoyable at the beginning, then slowly became pretty monotonous. I stopped immediately after guns were introduced; I have no interest in a classic Wuxia story that suddenly throws in guns after a few hundred chapters.

Okay, so 3 stars. The concept of upgrading in this story is quite interesting at first but soon lost its novelty. The upgrade becomes a convenient plot armor and crisis generator for the author, where effects are added, triggered or not, and improved at the whims of the author for the sake of story varieties. The story overall is also kind of rinse and repeat, I get this in a lot of Wuxia but at least they have many arcs with variations amd chance meeting, while in USAW it's more... more>> 'move to another place meet another enemy'

And yeah, the story itself is 'finished but not finished' since the author is suppose to write book 3 but didn't do it. Not bad if you got nothing to read for the 2/3 of the novel, at the last third you'd wish you can finish it fast <<less

I have to admit the prelude was horrible I didn't even understand it maybe that was just me yeah just get past that and it goes up hill from there.

I like this novel I will never say anything is the best thing every so yeah im addicted to it...

Few things I love about it is the MC is so damn human gets drunk on power even though he tries not too he does at times. horrible at directions... and here I thought I was bad at directions okay maybe im... more>> just as bad as him I maybe worst but I have GPS hahaha.. so yeah but other then that

yes he is human so it is also a down side in the story I mean humans don't think of all the issues of what can come of there actions so of cause his actions leads to him getting even more trouble... I mean
Spoiler

I mean if he wasn't so attach to revenge int he first part I think he wouldnt have nearly as much problems as his is having now but... then you wouldn't be reading this now would you

[collapse]

Over all its worth reading giving it try... I find the battles sometimes really hard to read but that because im a slow reader and there's a lot of detail going into the battles <<less

Pretty decent novel. Firs, it is not classic "transported" novel. Instead of a person from our world transported, a computer game skill together with some memories are transported and implanted into a person from another world. I like that MC here is not a rapist or deranged killer like it is quite often in chinese novels. He is indeed immature and s*upid for a good chunk of the novel, but I am giving it a pass since he seems like he is growing as a person. It much better in... more>> my opinion compared to the introduction of MC who does not change throughout the novel.

I also like that this novel does not have a strong focus on the process of cultivation. What I mean is, if you read most novels, you have chapters upon chapters describing how someone breaks through and cultivates. It may sound impressive and show that there is some danger, but it is quite boring to read how MC breaks through next level for 5 chapters. This novel has very little of this kind of thing. Most of the cultivation is just mentioned in a few sentences. MC also does not have a second power, he does not eat magical fruits that let him break through 5 realms at once. He also does not have some sort of ancient ghost that helps him and gives him fancy stuff at convenience. I only have big problem with one case in the soulbeast forest, that was forced.

This novel also so far doesn't put MC for the most part in ridiculous situations where plot armor has to activate. Unlike in other novels, where MC often meets someone he can't beat, he has to be rescued or some bs must happen for MC to survive, and pretty much without injury at that. In this novel, MC is not put in these situations, other than maybe twice, and the solutions to the situations are not as forced (like there is no some strong friend showing up out of nowhere because he happens to be there). MC fights and beats stronger enemies several times with his own power, and he actually suffers serious problems as a result. Alas, he does solve everything later, but this way I like it better, compared to "deus ex plot armor rescue".

I do wish the romance part was a bit better. He and his future wife literally sacrificed their lives for each other, yet they did not officially hook up after that. The whole world makes rumors about them, yet they don't talk about their feelings with each other.

Overall I enjoy this novel very much. It is quite funny and if you get past some s*upidity by MC, the novel is pretty decent. <<less

Chapters read: 27

Oddly enjoyable. Imagine your grandfather finding out how to play a video game and how upgrading a weapon works. Now give him some cheatcodes so his character levels a bit faster than usual. Now give him a side kick... ez now you have USAW. This story to me is more of a "Nothing else is out might as well catch up" type story than a must read. Not my cup of tea, but still entertaining I suppose.

Xianxia novel with failed reincarnation, weak MC, revenge plot, some game elements. The usual.

The MC is different, but it's still too soon to tell if this is good or bad. But anyway, the author is quite good. He combined so many elements, some not found in classic Xianxia, without making the story seem s*upid.

I started it cause it's translated by Heman (original translator of ST - first Xiantia for me) and I am curious.
