It's a shame

This novel had so much potential but it's kind of shallow in the sense that fluff is overwhelming and deducts from what could be a really deep and interesting premise.

it's van gogh reborn but it has none of his depth, his sorrow. His sadness, instead it's more like a seperate person with van gogh's talents and memories

i would think after dying from desperation and having a trully painful death, those impacts would follow into his second life, but he seemed to shrug it off. Almost like having a... more>> lifetime of memories and experience has no impact on his second life.

how can he be so confident when his entire past life, he achieved no accolades and died alone with nothing to show for it.

how can he be so stable and secure in himself when this is a man whose insanity took him to the very edges of death.

Theres a disconnect between van gogh and his korean counter part and that's what truly brings the story below its potential.

i went into this thinking this was about how Van gogh would be being reborn into the modern world, instead it becomes a story about a protagonist who has the skill and memories of van gogh but without the soul. <<less

I like how the author adds the note at the end of the chapter. The notes are filled with the story of the painting that talked in the chapter, some stories of a figure, the technique and meaning of the painting itself. For me who wasn't knowledgeable on art, it helpful for readers to understand what the chapter talking about.

the most thing I like is that character development is well-develop. I like how the MC is not vincent van Gogh alone or Go-Hoon alone, Vincent and Go-hoon... more>> fused. MC doesn't swamp in the melancholy of vincent's life. MC doesn't show abnormality for being a child with vincent's melancholy, not excessively mature that don't act for 10 y.o. MC still has a childish attitude but is mature at some times. MC truly became a new character that isn't vincent or go-hoon alone. Henry's character development is surprising, but I enjoyed it. I found it to be funny about the interaction of MC and Henry. <<less

This is seriously underrated. The first two chapters are a little shaky in translation, but it smoothes out a lot afterward, so be a bit patient in that regard.

Unlike most "arts" based novels, you won't find flowery language that overly tries to impress upon you how great the art is. Rather, the impressions are frank and meaningful without getting too technical, especially through the lens of a reborn Van Gogh. He has a lot of catching up to do--he has to learn Korean and catch up with the times--and this... more>> process of adaption is quite charming through his POV.

The relationship between Van Gogh and his new grandfather is also very warm and inviting. And yes, little Vah Gogh is praised as a genius, but it's dealt with very considerately by the people around him--they want to nurture him rather than put him on a pedestal. So it's not an "OMG, how can this be?" with people going crazy kind of story (at least not so far).

There's are also a low-key tension about the art world and what art is and should be from the author, but it's not preachy. It mostly delves into the struggles of artists and why the art world has developed that way from a historical analysis point of view.

The stories first chapter is a little discombobulated but it's because Vincent van Gogh is dying from long term lead poisoning. It's better chapter 2. I even cried for some reason when they started showing paintings but I'm not sure exactly why... also the translation just started and they're releasing one chapter a day so that's nice. Happy passionate translators yey.

I have not read it but as someone who is quite into art/art history. Van Gogh, before his big break, was known to draw in anyway that his client asked for, putting what they liked first and foremost for the sake of getting that sweet paycheck. I just find the premise of this story quite amusing and wanted to share this tidbit of information.

It's so new to me. A story abt an artist reborn in the modern world. More than that, I've never come across a novel which is so rich in specilized knowledge before.

The story is well-written, the translation is nice too (though there're still mistakes, it's acceptable and understandble).

This is such a wonderful novel! Deserve more readers!Truly underrated! 10/10! The feeling while I read this remind me when I read The Great Storyteller (another underrated masterpiece) so deep, wholesome not shallow at all! You will be crying and laughing at the same time when you read this can't wait for more chapter!

I end up eating pizza before I know it, even though I don't like pizza just because of this novel.

Usually you end up eating food due to appetizing it shown. But I ate pizza due to the sentimentality I felt from reading of this novel.

I like how the author conveys emotion and knowledge about art.

I'm a sucker for this kind of novel that made me cry. The novel is so cute & emotional, it doesn't feel weird seeing Ko Hun acts like a kid his age despite possessing memories of 36 years old painter. I love the relationship between Ko Hoon & his grandfather the most, so moving & touching.

Another relationship I love in this novel is between Ko Hun & Henry, such a unique as well as fun interactions. While Henry might seems like entitled arrogant narcissistic prick, he has quite the soft... more>> spot within him & he's just a big tsundere. He's such a great character with a lot of depth & dimensionality.

Translation is really well done, as the translator added trivia & pictures of the paintings so that reader can understand the context of the conversation. <<less

This is diamond!! The story is wholesome and amazing. It was amazing how informative it was, it seems that the author thoroughly study every information that he put in the novel. Translators also did very well by not using difficult words, and also adding information about uncommon words used in the story.

Brilliant. The story is practically glowing because of how wholesome it is! While perhaps not entirely accurate in its representation of Van Gogh (because c'mon how would we know?), it's certainly evocative in its descriptions.

I absolutely love it! As an artist myself, it made me think more about the art world and my own process more thoroughly! Van Gogh's journey as Ko Hun was heartwarming and left me giggly, I love his relationships with the people around him, especially with grandpa Ko Sooyeol! I thoroughly enjoyed the 2-month European tour arc!! Can't wait for more updates! I truly wish more people read about this! A hidden gem!

So far, so good. I'm enjoying this a lot. However, the translations are a bit choppy.

As I was reading, there were some emojis so I got a little confused since this is the first time I encountered them in a translated novel. To solve my confusion, I checked the novel on Kakaopage. It was MTL-ed and I saw the differences in the translation. There were no emojis and in the English translation, the protagonist's mother's name is Ko Hae, however, what in the original novel was Ko Hae-Seong.

There were also... more>> grammatical errors and inconsistencies throughout the translation. Like,

Ko Hun's first exhibition where he displayed his painting named [Sunflower] sometimes it's [Sunflowers], other times it wasn't in the bracket, and lowercase. Or a mix of those three.

Though I must say I'm still fairly new to the novel so I hope that the quality will improve. By fairly new, I mean Chapter 19, LMAO.

Don't get me wrong, I don't care about the grammatical errors but inconsistency gets to me. It ruins the flow since I get confused (It's me, hi. I'm the problem, it's me). I am also very thankful to the translator/s for picking this novel up.

I'm nitpicky when I like a novel and the translation is just not on the same level. I'm sorry but it's the truth (The translation got better after around Chapter 5. Don't be like me. I dropped this for weeks because of the first chapters, LOL). It makes me wish I'm fluent in Korean and that I should've seriously studied the language years ago when I had the energy and time to do so. <<less

I LOVE THIS NOVEL. I did not expect this to be so informational and funny At the same time. I highly recommend it if you want to read something light hearted
