Xie Yang, a freshman in college, embodies social anxiety, timidity, and well-behaved qualities. He was born with fair skin and looks like he has a baby face. Because of his quiet, shy, and timid nature, he is often mistaken for being gay. The boys around him avoid him as much as possible. In fact, he really is gay.

Xie Yang has been secretly in love with a boy for a long time. The boy is outstanding in appearance, good at studying, and comes from a good family background, making him an unattainable dream for Xie Yang. The only chance they had to interact was when his roommate’s five-player team for a game was short one person, and they asked him to fill in. Unfortunately, Xie Yang is terrible at the game and doesn’t even understand the skills, often missing or causing his team to lose. At the end of the game, he heard the boy say, “Forget it, you guys play.” Xie Yang was then kicked out of the room.

One day, he overheard the boy talking about him with his roommate. “No impression.” “Not interested.” “Don’t like him.” Xie Yang’s secret crush ended there.

By a twist of fate, they met again in a game, both using pseudonyms. They developed a good impression of each other and started an online romance. After spending some time together, Xie Yang decided to confess the truth.

“I… I’m a guy.”
“It doesn’t matter. I like you for who you are, regardless of gender.”
“I’m… I’m really bad at games.”
“It’s okay, winning or losing isn’t important.”
“My… my personality isn’t great.”
“I think you’re very cute.”

One day, Xie Yang discovered that his online romance partner was actually his former crush. Remembering what the boy had said, Xie Yang broke off their in-game relationship overnight and blocked him.

Later, Xie Yang was cornered. He was pinned against the wall and kissed repeatedly. “Still want to break up?”

You don’t need to chase the moon, because it will come to you.

So far it's a lazy and substanceless rehash of the unrequited love story, but this time with the addition of the recently popular e-sports setting. It's simply too embarrassing to finish. The MC, Xie Yang, while initially earning some sympathy from his "pwease pity me uwu" backstory, quickly becomes tiresome. He's obsessed with Qi Xu to the point that he unwilling to consider any other men because they don't measure up to his idea of Qi Xu. But get this, despite being obsessed with Qi Xu, he seemingly doesn't know... more>> anything about Qi Xu. His positive perception of him comes almost entirely from superficial traits like his looks or voice. In other unrequited love stories the MC at least has some flashbacks to when the ML let them borrow a pencil for an important exam, gave them an umbrella on a rainy day, or otherwise showed some warmth to the so that the reader can understand the foundation of the MC's attachment. Without establishing this, Xie Yang comes across a delusional facecon.

The author will also give you a headache as they navigate between telling you how good looking Xie Yang is and his own internal monologue about how undesirable he is. Seriously, even in the first chapter the author couldn't refrain from having one of Xie Yang's dorm-mates reflect on how he's actually quite attractive. It's such a Mary Sue trope for the author insist the character isn't pretty, and then only provide complimentary descriptions of him.

Qi Xu's interest and attraction to Xie Yang is also inexplicable and somehow gross. Qi Xu's a long time league player and has probably met other players with a similar attitude to Xie Yang, so what makes Xie Yang's servile behaviour so special and attractive that it catches Qi Xu's eye? Who knows. It's never made clear. Perhaps like when he moaned about many pretending to be obedient, Qi Xu could tell that at a glance that Xie Yang was genuinely a pea brained yes-man, but in truth this hardly matters. Qi Xu's type is very, um, Jax main, like registered s*x offender vibes. He wants someone who is obedient and seems easy to deceive so that it evokes his protective instincts. So, a child? The author is not helping Qi Xu beat these allegations because his initial impression of Xie Yang's smurf account is that he's a 7th grader. Xie Yang asks for Qi Xu's age, but Qi Xu never bothers to find out if username Caramel Pudding is a minor. And in a later chapter, again, "It was like teasing a kid, yet it also felt like teasing someone you're dating". I'm begging the author to stop drawing parallels between Qi Xu's object of affection and children.

Here are some other things that made no sense or made me laugh :

Spoiler
    • First and foremost, are straight women okay? Starting an online romance over LoL? Is this really your fantasy?
    • Xie Yang is a computer science major at a prestigious university and he is genuinely acting like learning the basics of MOBA is as difficult as inventing cold fusion power.
    • Xie Yang is a computer science major but the story seriously dedicates more time to talking about his part time work at a cake shop.
    • Xie Yang works part time at a cake shop and bakes some of the cakes that the shop sells. This makes about as much sense as a part time waiter also cooking the dishes he serves. I know the author was desperate to paint a picture of Xie Yang as a dumb little housewife, but please, his job would just be to handle the register and at most help with prep work. The cakes would be left to the baker or their apprentices.
    • Despite how frequently it's mentioned, the author is too lazy to introduce us to the owner or any other workers in the cake shop.
    • Qi Xu's deep chuckles which make Xie Yang blush make me cringe. It's giving domineering discord moderator.
    • Somehow manages to be both misogynistic and homophobic by constantly reminding the reader about how it's natural for women to play support even though Xie Yang is a man. I guess from the author's perspective the shou being weak and pathetic makes them somewhat like a woman and so naturally Xie Yang should play support too?

I ggl translated the whole thing and oML this book was so sweet! Its a college romance and the pursuing arc was super satisfying, but the actual romance was just so lovely! The male lead and MC are such green flags and they are just soo cute! It ended wayy too early and they should have prolonged it a bit longer. Its a really good book and you wish you were the MC way too many times! The relationship is nothing toxic at all!

A very sweet old-fashioned novel. One of those where, while reading, you can't get rid of the feeling that it was originally written as a classic BG novel and then genders were switched without changing characters, details or tropes.

Can't really call MC and ML likeable, also author's obsession with term "obedient" as a main character theme is a bit unsettling, but they are not annoying, at least for me.

Dropping it because MC is a bit too meek and dumb for my liking, but translation quality is good and text is... more>> well-written and dynamic.

Actually, recommending translator's site for visitation, had a very pleasant time reading novels there! <<less

4.5 stars**

This a wonderful read for those who like fluff, a clingly lover (ML), and lots and lots of dog food!

MC has a crush on ML for a few years. However, he is timid and shy and has social phobia (as many of us might understand). Reading about his POV really made me think of long gone days of just liking someone for no reason.

ML is very doting and very, very clingy. He's so sticky! However, he treats MC really well. Apparently, MC is just his type. His style is... more>> more of show-not-tell.

When these two are together, I got a very pleasant feeling. I thought MC would have some issues with intimacy (as many other innocent characters do, all awkward and stiff), but aside from his shyness, he was very willing to participate in intimacy with ML. There is no smut in this novel, but just allusions to intimacy. I still didn't feel like I was missing anything since they have good chemistry.

I really enjoyed this one and look forward to the last few extras and maybe more from this author one day. Novel has 57 chapters of main text and 14 extras.

Edit: I forgot to mention, many thanks to the translator. I was just checking out their site and added a few more novels to my TBR. Thank you, translator/s! <<less
