What can a person do to survive?

Mei Lin might not know what others would do, but she is willing to sacrifice everything—her body and dignity included.

She yearns for life to blossom as recklessly as flowers in February, even if only for a brief moment. Yet, in reality, she lives like a toad in the mud, shrinking away, ugly and filthy.

She only knows that with life, everything else can be discussed. But without life, what is there to talk about?

What she never expected was that she would ultimately fall at the hands of Murong Jing and that bastard—a man who once used her as a toy to please another woman, a man she had paid back fiercely, a petty, vindictive man.

That wretched man!

But in the end, the story concludes with a happy ending.

I read this with a hope to see a more questionable side of Murong Jinghe because the drama adaption is very lacking in that aspect. I'm not disappointed!! He's worse than my other blorbo lol Don't get me wrong. I love Kill Me Love Me cdrama but I feel his transition to "actually he's a good person" is too sudden for me and the drama is falsely advertised as toxic romance in the trailer. I much prefer the novel version where the characters really get to know each other once... more>> they became stuck together in worse case scenario (remote village arc).

Surprisingly, I enjoyed reading this. Maybe because I have very low expectation and used to red flag characters? Mei Lin is such a cool assassin and good person similar to her drama counterpart but she's more sharp in figuring out Murong Jinghe's identity. I find it easy to love Yue Qin and Qing Yan here. Yue Qin is only a kid who follows Mei Lin while Qin Yang is a gay eunuch who serve MRJH. They have surprisingly more screentime than Murong Xuanlie and Princess Zi Gu in the novel. Yes, the novel has a gay side ship!! Qing Yan's love life. I already love Qing Yan in the drama so to find out he's originally gay is a win-win for me.

As for Murong Jinghe, I do like his flawed indecisiveness because I love schemer character stereotypes. This type usually finds it hard to identify what is sincere or not because they are too jaded to the point they can become a bad person. They are terribly bad at handling sincerity so I really expect they will hurt their partner in some part of the story. Also, I understand that he thinks he love Luomei because they are childhood friends after all and she's been his childhood crush while Mei Lin is just one of his assassin that he only spends time with for months. That's years versus months!! To add to that, he wish to become an emperor so their social status is a big problem for him. Despite that, I still have gripe to his character.

Spoiler

My problem with him is not indecisiveness but more like he lack a reflection arc, a smooth transition to think about his feelings. He don't dwell much about his feelings or talk about it with others. Like why he like Luomei and Mei Lin in the first place? What's their differences? Why he choose Mei Lin over Luomei? Him becoming an emperor is not even explored in the story? I can't imagine him as emperor! At least the drama MRJH has work experience because he became a governor too and not only a general. His drama version is better in that aspect.

Sure, there's war and he's busy but you're selling it as romance so he need to think about why he like his woman. In the beginning, it looked like he's using Mei Lin to make Luomei jealous but later it became he use Luomei to make Mei Lin jealous. I also hate that the heroine became like a plot device. She's the answer to most of his problems! So even if the heroine want to get away from him, the plot is like NOPE WE STILL NEED YOU TO PROGRESS. Want to frame his prince brother? Let's use heroine to escape suspicions. Broken meridians? Heroine has the doctor for that. Luomei is dying? Heroine's worm inside her body can heal her. Luomei left MRJH because he became an emperor? MRJH goes back to pursuing the heroine. That part is what annoyed me the most. Maybe its because its from the heroine's perspective who unconditionally accepted his terrible sides so its hard to see him as good love interest. He's interesting character for sure though. All I can say is the author must be a sad*st to write this lol.

[collapse]

This story for me is a bittersweet sadistic romance. It make me sad most of the part because heroine deserve to be treated well. From what I understand, heroine's love for him is selfless and treasure her feelings despite being unrequited because as an assassin she's forbidden to have emotions so once she has that it felt like she got to know a side of herself outside her assassin persona. She continue to grasp it because she probably perceived it she's more than an assassin. A human with emotion. On the other hand, her male lead's love is quite selfish and need validation from his partner. Having a broken body, he seek control to other people so that he'll know he's still good enough and in control. It just this condition work well with Mei Lin more than Luomei because Mei Lin will continue to love him even if he's a broken man but Luomei prefer the past capable general Murong Jinghe.

Spoiler

I wish the main couple just go back living to that remote village in the ending instead of becoming emperor but oh well. I appreciate that her mom is at least alive though. The book has happy ending than the drama even if MRJH's actions remained questionable after everything. I also enjoyed the little references the drama used from the book such as the sachet gifted to MRJH, the dog gifted to Mei Lin, wildflowers in Mei Lin's burial, them singing a song in their stay in the village, etc. It really help me finish this with the cdrama in mind because the cdrama cast for main couple are perfect.

5 stars for the translation. 2.5 stars for the characters and 2.5 stars for the story. I'll just round it up to 3 stars.

I only skimmed this as it's not my cup of tea (I don't like unfaithful leads - whether both or either FL/ML). Still, I was curious about the ending, so I finished it.

Spoiler

What I disliked most about the story is that the FL forgave the s*umbag ML and ended up having a happy ending with him. He even made her marry his subordinate, so why?! Why still marry the ML in the end after you got divorce? I know the FL became used to going with the flow and she dont have much choice, but still... I had hoped she would find someone else or be happy being an independent & free woman since the summary mentioned she'd have a happy ending, but I consider the ending a tragedy

Anyway, for those who will read this, still give it a go and see if it suits your taste (especially if you like plots with domineering president types and white moonlight/substitute themes). <<less

Well!! I don't know what to say. Loved it and Wanted to give 5 stars - but I also feel that it will be unfair to those novels I gave 5 stars. So, I will give this 4.7

This story is truly engaging and you won't be able to put it down. It draws you in from the first chapter and doesn't let you go till the end. So much action - still pulls you into a place where you can contemplate and lose yourself in that fantasy world. You would... more>> root for the heroine with all your heart. She is the very definition of resilience. You would love her - and her efforts towards making every situation better.

The romance is convincing, touching and the angst in the final few chapters is so moving and you feel along with the characters.

NOW, the ML - What can I say - He is of course not perfect (that is completely fine) -

Spoiler

He starts of as a very flawed character (again fine).

However, I read these romance novels to read about characters who show more decisiveness when faced with so much character interaction that you as a reader feel moved by-- whereas here, he continues to be ignorant and indecisive

We needed him to turn around and realize the worth of our protagonist heroine --that is so evident to any one with a bit of sense. His realization comes too late and he experiences too little suffering as a consequence.

The heroine on the other hand deserves every good thing

[collapse]

I also agree with another reviewer who said - at least give us more extras to balance out this bitterness...

Overall - Go and read it - It is certainly worth your time - Delivers a solid engaging story that will move you.

P.S. The drama and the novel have only the character names in common with a few broad strokes of story similarities. Other than that - you can enjoy this novel as well as the drama as independent stories. Both are worth your time. <<less

I actually like the story quite a bit. Firstly I like to mention that almost all the side characters in this story, they are very likable. The author is clearly very skilled at writing good characters that are endearing and make u wanna root for them. I even like the setting of the story, and the world building also had a lot of depth.

Let's talk about the main characters. I like our MC. She mostly goes with the flow, and doesn't really make that many decisions that frustrate you. But... more>> the ML is something else alright.
Spoiler

He has very low emotional maturity which makes it hard to support the romance. Personally I don't really like romantic interests who are indecisive, so I am very neutral about him. He tends to ping pong between our MC and his white moonlight. I guess the author really wanted to make the story angsty as possible, which is why the main lead made decisions that were sometimes kind of incomprehensible.

I would recommend the story to anybody whose interested in a short angst filled novel. It's pretty good. <<less

WOW I LOVED IT!!!

This isn't a story drenched in sweetness and romance, instead it's a tale of flawed characters and push and pull of their turbulent emotions. The FL is shown as week character in the beginning but she is strong, determined, lovable and endearing. The ML is however far more complicated, I don't know whether I liked him or not.

Spoiler

Torn between our heroine and lingering Spector of his 1st crush, he is indecisive, wavering and inconsiderate in his actions. His choices therefore repeatedly hurts FL, dragging her through emotional upheaval.

[collapse]

Story wise I loved it very much. This novel kept me throughly engaged without any boredom. I was so hooked by the story as it has that little angst moment between the leads that I finished within two days. After the ending I wanted more side stories of main couples, so unsatisfied with lack of side stories. <<less
