What Should I Do if My Best Friend Is a Green Tea? [Transmigrated Into a Book]

My name is Yan Xi.

I have a best friend, but she never respects me.

When we go out to eat, she always chooses restaurants so expensive they make me want to cry, without considering my empty wallet.

Best friend: “Use my card, I’ll cover everything.”

Me: [Frustrated] How does this make me look to others?!

When we go shopping, she always drags me to luxury stores.

Best friend: “I’ve only used this bag once. Here, take it. Oh, and this one, and this one—you can have them all!”

Me: [Frustrated] What am I, a garbage bin?!

When I was heartbroken after a breakup, she never stayed by my side.

Best friend: “I’m so busy these days. Just go out and clear your head on your own!”

Alipay notification: ¥100,000 received.

Me: [Frustrated] Can money replace friendship?

Me: [Grumbling while accepting] Okay, maybe it can!

However, one day, I awakened.

I realized that I was living inside a novel, and my best friend was the villainous supporting female character in the story.

She didn’t have time to stay with me because she was desperately chasing the male lead—a man who would never love her, like a hopeless simp. In the end, she lost both her love and her wealth and was exiled to a remote island to dig up sweet potatoes.

It must be this cursed novel plot corrupting our friendship, leaving nothing but money between me and my best friend!

I must save her!

“You argued with your fiancé? Oh, if I had such a wonderful fiancée like you, I would definitely trust you unconditionally!”

“It’s okay, your fiancé just said a few things to me, just scared me so much I nearly fell off the 20th floor… It’s no big deal…”

“I know you have a fiancé. I won’t get in your way. I can handle it on my own—getting rained on, dealing with cramps—it’s all fine. You go be with him…”

Best friend: [Tearing up] Yan Xi needs me!

Male lead: What the… what kind of Bi Luo Chun is this?!

(Note: “Bi Luo Chun” is a type of green tea, used humorously here to describe the absurdity of the situation.)

⚠️Warning: ⚠️ Slight pe*ophile, child trafficking, doubtful consent and many more.

This is a story of two girl best friends (Yan Xi [MC] and Zhou Qingyu [BFF]) helping each other in their best ability. The author did a good job distinguishing their friendship from a romance (not a yuri story) and a master-subordinate kind.

I also appreciate the villainess keeping true to her character as having an arrogant mouth but a gentle heart for those she care.

Spoiler

She would willingly throw everything she has to the people in her heart, which what happened when she was controlled by the plot to be obsessed with the OG!Hero and with our MC.

[collapse]

However, I do not recommend this as a romance story.

Yan Xi (MC) x Zhou Yanci (BFF's brother; ML)

There is a huge age gap of 7 years between the two. MC had a crush at ML when she was still a minor (15ish), while ML had a crush on her when she's 20.

Their romance started before ML fixed his family dilemmas and before ML and BFF conflict was resolved.

Speaking of the siblings dilemna, here is my summary on their issue and my humble opinion on it + on BFF "awful business performance"

Spoiler

The two are half siblings who used to be close until BFF's mom died.

BFF was disappointed that ML didn't came with her at her mother's wake and her maternal aunt manipulate her to thinking that ML wants to take all the family property for himself and hated her.

It's important to note that BFF is 13 at this time while ML is... 17. What did ML do when he discovered this scheme?

He just ✨️walkaway✨️

It's not that surprising then why they both went LC with each other.

Even if there were miscommunication, the mere fact ML did nothing speaks volume on his attitude on their relationship. I hate that this was gloss over and their relation turned good thanks to MC.

And I love that they had to debuff BFF to suck at business so that ML would have a "legitimate" reason to take over the properties or else their business will be ruined. Yet, still show BFF having numerous business doing fine on their own and how she's capable for certain industries.

So much forced and twist is made to just make this dynamic work that I hope the author just drop this plot point that she sucks at business and just made her unable to lead the company higher than what her father did or also great at business but controlled by plot and later find the entire thing as not for her.

[collapse]

Here's my more detailed explanation and humble opinion on to the MC's lovelife.

Spoiler

To be honest, I didn't mind the age gap and the entire dating your best friend's brother as I read worst ones. I just didn't like how their romance started. Made me fully realize why some people do not like dating their sibling's friends or age group.

ML and his sister (BFF) did not like each other to the point of going low contact. It doesn't matter if the reason is misunderstanding or dumb, it just feels off for MC, the sister's bff to have a crush on the brother. And then ML courting MC and MC accepting it while ML and BFF are still estranged.

Not to mention their entire romance reeks the cold ceo story type with the "How dare you be close to that boy" and shove a kiss.

The cringe is so high that I think I might have ignored some plot points from skipping these chapters.

[collapse]

Zhou Qingyu (BFF) x Pei Hanli (HL)

If the previous one has the cold ceo script then this one has the loyal dog script.

And as much as I adore HL obsessed love, I do not like masochistic loyal dog that are willing to torture themselves for their master and his reason for loving BFF is so dumb.

Spoiler

Near the end, we get an insight as to how the novel ended with the OG!Hero taking over the Pei family.

Apparently, HL is so obsessed with BFF that when BFF chose OG!Hero, HL was happy to relinquish his property and revenge just to make BFF happy.

Mind you HL was schemed by the OH!Hero's parents to be child trafficked and was just fortunately rescued by BFF and her dad. But he was willing to let it go and keep it a secret just for her happiness.

And the reason for his obsession is just because BFF and her father "miraculously" went to the village he was taken for charity. This dude took the opportunity to touch BFF with his dirty hands and BFF made a ruckus and so her father discovering his identity... JUST THAT???

[collapse]

We were also introduced to BFF's ex which for me was a very good guy, so good that BFF did not want him as he deserve better. I find his entire existence cute but not needed.

The ending was ruined for me thanks to the romance but it was still a fun read. <<less

This was a very easy read! It’s not the most awe-inspiring or plot-riveting novel, but it’ll do enough to satiate a craving for this “green tea wins the day” trope. Our main characters absolutely have plot-armor and the lucky protagonist buff—very ironic as they’re trying to go against the lucky buff from the novel in their own world.

The CPs were alright (nothing specially moving about them especially for this type of novel), but I personally believe that the real golden relationship was MC and MC’s bestie. The two have been... more>> at each other’s sides at their best and worst; it’s truly so wholesome to see them come to defend each other—with MC defying the laws of plot just to ensure her bestie thrives above it all.

Overall, I’d recommend this novel for people who enjoy these tropes [modern day green tea protagonist, xuanhuan/OP characters in the business/entertainment world, villainess makes a comeback, etc... ], but you can surely live without it. I’ll give a fair warning that this is a “mostly low brain-power plot that serves the characters” type of novel—which is absolutely still enjoyable—, but may not be for those who want more bite or world-building.

Thank you to the translators for introducing me to this novel! <<less

Everybody needs a friend who can support you. But not just blind support. It's nice to have a friend who can save you from a fire pit.

This novel gave me a high blood pressure. The beginning was truly irritating. I needed to finish it to feel vindicated. From the summary, you know it's full of cliches and have a predictable outcome. I read it regardless. After reading too many BLs, it's nice to have something like this. At first, I thought this could be yuri but it's not.

Honestly a nice read. Not much depth to it, just something to read when you're not looking for something very emotionally-engaging.

What I enjoyed a lot is the relationship between MC and the eldest lady. There are not many c-novels that centre the friendship between two girls, so I am happy with this find.

There was a good amount of comedy and not many plotholes.

Also must mention ... more>>
Spoiler

This novel gave the OG FL a chance at redemption. I have read way too many novels where the female villain character is absolutely annihilated by the plot even though most of the damage done to the MCs are from the OG ML. I am not discussing whether she deserved the chance or not. I am just saying it's nice to read a novel not completely villifying a female character for once.

Anyway, solid read. <<less

Amazing read.

The friendship is the focus of the story. And how a friend (in legal way that doesn’t really go against her best friend who is being mesmerized) tries to save her friend from the plot of the novel.

Some secondary characters are well written (like Su Lingling, she is not a braindead person and is quite a good friend to Ye Luoyi and can see right from wrong even in rivals or people she doesn’t get along with).

The romance is just a side-plot of this story, but is cute (love... more>> how they "solved that situation" in a real life manner, not the usual novel thing).

The argument one reader said about "ped*" plot. She was 15 years old and he, 22 years old, helped her and was handsome. So like most of the teens she had a crush on him, but that was it. She focused on her studies and part-time work. And he didn't feel anything except pity for an abandoned kid. Most of us had crushes at that age (idols, celebrities, actors, boyband's members?). How is that illegal?

Overall, it is an amazing and fresh story that focuses on friendship. There is no dog blood drama, no visciousness. Characters are not 2 dimensional and have their own reasoning and at point can realize what to do and what is right. <<less

It's been a long time since I was so engaged in a story that I stayed up all night reading. That alone gives it a 5-star rating in my book. But what made it so engaging?

  • humor: well-woven into the story without being superfluous; it was integrated and a natural result of characters rather than being added
  • characterization: despite all the tropes, the characters felt real--not two-dimensional stereotypes. I didn't always understand the 2FL and her abrasive personality, but as the FL succeeded in showing the world the 2FL better qualities, I began to understand as well
  • relationships: rather than making the romantic partner fulfill all the characters' needs, genuine friendship and affectionate family ties were highlighted and prioritized. The FL was fiercely protective of her friends and employees. She showed them respect and they naturally reciprocated that.
    • autonomy: rather than blindly following fate [the novel plot], the FL worked assiduously to save her friend from a terrible end.
      Spoiler

And rather than falling under the protection of a man or a powerful family, the novel FL chooses to determine her own success after the original ML

      [collapse]
  • utilization of the system: rather than having a 'supreme AI system' dictate every single action, this system set up one gargantuan task and then learned alongside the FL, providing information and support like a friend. I loved its fangirling
  • translation: I wasn't struggling through this one; mis-identified characters and mis-gendered pronouns were almost non-existent [as a former English teacher and professional editor that's a huge compliment]

I really enjoyed this novel because it focused more on friendship than romance and it was nice to see a depiction of positive female relationships

I found the romance relatable, it started off with the MC trying to keep the ML healthy to help her BFF and the ML slowly fell for her. There was no g*ooming plot, yes the MC had a crush on the ML when she was 15 BUT her BFF had a strained relationship with the ML so the MC avoided him for 5 years (her BFF... more>> was more important than an adolescent crush)

I highly recommend this novel. The depiction of friendship is such a refreshing change from the women competing for a man/resources trope <<less

I found this novel very easy to read, no overly complicated plot. I actually read this novel because of other readers' reviews. At first I was hesitant because when I read the synopsis of the novel, because I felt the genre was Yuri.

But after reading other readers' reviews saying this novel is only limited to the friendship of two women and seeing that none of the tags refer to the Yuri genre, I was interested in reading this novel.

I didn't think too deeply while reading this novel, I enjoyed the... more>> comedy as Yan Xin tried to persuade Zhou Qingyu to stay away from Pei Yubai and Yan Xin's interaction with the system. But I think what's interesting about this novel is the friendship between Yan Xin and Zhou Qingyu, I've only come across this kind of female friendship novel. <<less

I liked the story.

I also just want to correct someone's review. The Best Friend is not good at business. While controlled by the plot she is terrible at it and has her aunt as a CEO for Starlight. Her older brother is overwhelming better BUT he doesn't stop her from projects even when she was controlled by plot and basically funding Tianhui.

Yan Xi is good at business and takes advantage of plot related opportunities so that the Best Friend is able to improve in business.

Loved it. The romance is not the main topic, friendship is. The characters have a very cute approach to love and the relationship developed in a very relaxed manner.

There is familial love, friendship and romance. Highly recommended.

It's a pretty good read. The friendships in the story are not exactly relatable, but they are heartwarming and distinct, which is the best part of this novel (after all, the whole book centers on this friendship). However ... more>>
Spoiler

the story is very one sided with little to no room for antagonist to fight back Perhaps the author wishes Pei Yubai felt the same way as he did to Zhou Qingyu? Probably. But, it's a bit odd because Yan Xi doesn't have any prior scheming experience, so it's wierd when she schemed with high accuracy even though author describe her as very smart girl.

Also towards the end, it feels like there's a forced romance plot, as if the author ran out of ideas. Instead of exploring her family dynamics which I feels still lacking, they opted for a cliché CEO storyline. Imo, even without Zhou Yanci and Yan Xi romance the story can still running.

[collapse]
Even though it's not perfect, the rest of the novel should makes up for it. <<less
