As a young servant, Gu An accidentally broke a pot containing a spiritual flower. While he was panicking, he discovered that he had absorbed twelve years of lifespan from it!

Thus began Gu An’s journey to immortality.

To cultivate safely, Gu An chose to become a servant disciple in the Taixuan Sect, where he planted medicinal herbs daily to consume their lifespan and enhance his own cultivation.

He continuously evolved his basic skills with his evolution skill until they became divine abilities.

Eras passed, stars shifted, and the world changed.

Legends of immortals began to circulate.

Gu An, now an immortal, spent half of his lifespan to push his cultivation beyond the limits of immortality and achieved the saint realm and stood above the heavenly Dao.

However, one day, an old man in white robes, who looked like a true immortal, visited Gu An.

“I am the Celestial Lord Xuanqing from the heavens. The Great Emperor Taihao has heard of your numerous good deeds in the mortal realm. You have repeatedly saved countless lives and have accrued great merits. He has specially dispatched me to invite you to join the ranks of immortals and assume the celestial position of Divine Steed Officer.”

“Dare I ask, what the duties of the Divine Steed Officer arre?”

“The Heavenly Court possesses divine horses capable of traversing heaven and earth and move between yin and yang. The Divine Steed Officer is responsible for overseeing and feeding these horses.”

Hmm? Raising horses?

MC is ruthless, author is even more so. Just when you say what a decent guy, author does 180 on the character. His thoughts are inconsistent.

As for the thing that made me give 1 star is just a scene that outright made me stop reading and give the review.

Spoiler

He casually ens*aves a cultivator for a 1000 years in animal form and then rides it. I stopped reading there. He was going to kill him but he knew he didn't deserve it. Hell, he done it because he's powerful to begin with and could help him.

Then there's that mocking of Green Hero author who has an MC that's reluctant in relationships when MC himself is far worse. He fears heavens are blocking his path with woman but he keeps the woman close anyway.

[collapse]

Also author seems lazy as he brings tropes from his other novel. Characters are basically reimagined here. <<less

Spoiler

I'm not going to rate this novel because honestly I'm still undecided.

On one hand, this is a competently written novel and far better than most typical Xianxia novels, surely this deserves at least 4 stars. But on the other hand, I hate the concept and MC so much I wanted to give this a 1 star.

The setting is nice, the support characters are distinguishable from one another and each has their own personality, and even though so far the whole novel is happening in one place there's always something going on with teh plot and subplots that it's not boring.

However, one: I hate systems that just give everything to MCs without them having to work for it. Two, there's a big difference between low-key and cowardice, and the MC of this novel is simply a coward. I've literary read hundreds of CN novels over the past decades, reviewed dozens in this site alone, and this is the first time I've ever felt compelled to call the protagonist of a novel I read "a coward", that's how bad the MC is.

Everyone sees the MC as a good guy and kind, but actually most of his acts of kindness he did to either cover his own ass or to advance his goals. For example, people think he's a hard worker, but actually it's his system that forces him to work hard in the field. People think he has a good heart and don't like cultivating or killing, but actually it's because he's afraid of fighting and dying. People think he's always ready to help but limited by his ability, when actually he can easily help everyone around him in secret due to his OP-ness, but he just doesn't.

For example, he lets a junior, whom he claims to care about, learned a demonic skill that could turn him into a mindless killing machine, because he claims that everyone should make a decision for themselves. The thing is, the MC could have taught this junior himself, any of his random skills is far stronger than the demonic skill AND without the side effect, AND he can do this in secret or by using a secret identity (something he did later on for another kid). The junior has a grudge to avenge so of course he would learn the ONLY skill he has access to, but if he has other stronger skill he could learn would he choose to be a killing machine? Obviously not, because he is a good kid at heart. The MC, however, despite being able to help, didn't. And thus, he let this good kid he claims he cares about turning into a killing machine and harms many others.

I also hate how he humbled himself in front of people far less powerful than him just to maintain his cover. The MC has no backbone. He bows his head and butter up low level managers of the sect for a little profit. He's always afraid that there's someone stronger out there I would be surprised if he's brave enough to go pee at night without asking for an escort. Dude got no aura, pride, or charisma of a powerhouse. I mean there's low-key and there's spineless.

Let me put it this way, say you won a billionaire dollar lottery, would you be willing to work at McD sucking up you manager's ass and accepts daily ab*ses from the customers just so your family don't find out you're rich and ask for money? Even if you should, could you? Of course not, you would go F this sh*t and open a restaurant somewhere else, or just retire early away from your family. Because unlike the MC you still have your pride (as a billionaire), guts and brain.

An example of low-key MC done right, in recent year is probably the MC from Follow the Path of Dao from Infancy, who hides his strength but not because he's afraid he's not strong enough, he's simply waiting for the right moment, and when push comes to shove he explodes, even when he's still far from being the best in the world, he mans up and fights for what's right, even if it means going against and getting killed by his own father.

But I don't know, man. Perhaps I'm nitpicking. Because overall this is a good novel, perhaps even a gem for fans of low-key MCs genre. But for me, it's just frustrating. I like OP MCs, I have no problem with low-key MCs, a combination of both is even better, but not if the source of the MC's low-key-ness is his cowardice. I just cannot respect someone who's afraid of his own shadow despite having the ability to shatter the sun.

I've read the raws until chapter 200+. This is horrible. Seriously. It's one thing for the main character to be cautious and a little cowardly, but this MC is just a paranoid loser. And the author REALLY wanted to make MC's decision to be low-key and hiding his identity a right choice. 200 chapters in and NOBODY had discovered he was powerful.

Although the author's previous work, Top Tier Providence, also had protagonist who's kinda low-key in the beginning and focused on cultivating in seclusion for a long period of time,... more>> at least it had a lot of comedy to make it entertaining. This garbage has none, even though the 'comedy' tag was shamelessly plastered on it.

The formula for this novel is as follows: cowardly MC plucks herbs, gains lifespan, use the lifespan to upgrade his skills and cultivation, meets an enemy whose cultivation is lower than him, kills the enemy in one-shot, maintains his cowardly nature and thinks that he's still weak. Rinse and repeat. Oh, and als0 he wears a mask every time he take action. That's important to mention because hiding his identity for no good reason is what he does best!

An MC who doesn't have any goals other than cultivating to an absolute peak in secret and a system who lets him do just that. Hiding one's ability and identity is okay for a hundred chapter, but not to the extent of two hundred chapters. I just glimpsed at the latest chapter at c430, and yes, nobody had discovered his identity yet. What's the use of writing overpowered MC if you're just going to hide him behind a mask all the time?

Garbage. <<less

This novel is part of a growing trend in xianxia webnovels which basically boils down to being slice of life cultivation novels. It's relaxing, low stakes, little action and just steady accumulation.

To give a brief description of the novel, it's about a farm owner who cultivates herbs for his system and hides behind the scenes while witnessing the the history of the sect and the people he cares about. Instead of a novel that solely focuses on the mc's personal exploits, it puts a lot of focus on the current... more>> affairs of the cultivation world.

It's nothing particularly amazing or new but for people who enjoy that sort of thing, it's a really good read. Personally I think it improves on similar novels with how the protagonist is not completely dismissive or aloof to current affairs, because honestly nothing kills a seclusion-type novel more than the author trying to convince you that the current arc is meaningful only for the MC to completely kill the momentum by not caring about it and wasting all those chapters setting it up.

Normally I would've just ended it there and not even bother giving it a review, just rate it 4 and look for the next novel to read. However I'm looking at the 3.2 rating and current reviews and I just felt like I had to share my thoughts in case people dismissed the novel simply because of its abysmal rating.

This novel, and some of the other newer novels like it, is for those who are tired of all the face slapping, potato galleries, one dimensional harem members, and plot armors. Having outgrown these core aspects of the genre can honestly feel like it's about time to move on, but after having spent so many years reading these novels, who wouldn't have lingering attachment to this cultivation world genre? That is why I'm guessing that more and more slice of life xianxias are coming out recently because I believe it's an effort of some authors to try and find new directions for the genre to expand on, and honestly I couldn't be happier if that were the case. Protagonists with iron will and constantly dancing with life and death are all cool and all, but really when the realities of life comes knocking, it's hard to take these sentiments to heart. That kind of passionate and hot-blooded action is reserved for the youth. The fantasy has shifted from heroism to simple stability and peace.

Is that just a sign of resignation and conformation to the difficulties in life? Maybe it is, but reading webnovels has always been a form of escapism, I don't feel any shame in affirming to my preference. <<less

Edit: I'd avoid the BOTI Translation website for this novel, at a certain point they don't actually translate the full chapters and it cuts off like 50-75% of the way through. I think it's due to copy-pasting whatever mtl tool they use which probably cuts off after a certain number of words.

Reminds me of Top Tier Providence. It's weird the score is so low.

Overall very enjoyable, with an overpowered and overly cautious MC. It features a large cast of characters, similar to Top Tier Providence, though this MC is... more>> a little closer to the centre of the action. He has multiple identities that somehow keep colliding while he's just trying to live the farming life. The misunderstandings are grounded enough I could enjoy them (as opposed to just cringing) while being hilarious in how events unfold. <<less

I am not going to cover the content much, as other reviewers have done so adequately.

This is a "easy and slow cultivation novel." The character has a system that let's him harvest lifespan through killing, or by harvesting herbs. He can then exchange lifespan for cultivation, or to master/upgrade his abilities. The MC is always higher level than his enemies, is ridiculously OP, and stays timid throughout the novel towards anyone he is not at least a major realm above (which, granted, is almost always everyone except maybe one.)

My... more>> main contention with this novel, and the reason I write this review, is not the novel itself, but the enormous amount of missing content on botitranslation.

Botitranslation uses ChatGPT or some similar AI to translate. This is fine; the translation is high quality, and the release rate quick.

However, in dozens of chapters so far, there is missing content. Not a mere one or two words, but often hundreds.

This is true for more than this one novel, but has been extra noticeable for me here.

To their credit, there is a function to report this, and when I have done so, it rarely takes them longer than a day to fix it. But this is an enormous flaw with their platform. The flow of the story takes enormous hits frequently; sequence of events and important parts of the plot are entirely missing.

Moreover, I believe they should know by now that there are thousands if not tens of thousands of words missing, but I have not seen any proactive fixing of chapters I have not reported, neither for this novel nor others with missing content.

I can't know if there is more missing content I did not notice. Almost all the missing content I have encountered has been at the end of the chapters, but a few chapters have felt weirdly choppy in the middle.

I actually really like this story, and I enjoy a lot of things about botitranslation, but due to mentioned issues, I'm leaving it at three stars for now. <<less

Same author as Top Tier Providence so there's obvious similarities. I've read the manhua of TTP, not the novel yet, and this novel is disappointing in comparison. Even still, I do recommend trying this out if you find the premise interesting or if you like slice of life. Perhaps I'm wrong about some things I've put in this review as I really didn't have the patience to keep reading, and thus didn't get very far. It's something I can only get through by reading via TTS and doing something else.... more>> Reading this actively was a no-go for me.

The novel is basically a slice-of-life cultivation. Gu An spends his days gathering herbs to gain lifespan from them, reading, cultivating, and otherwise just managing his garden. It's broken up by minor villains threatening the safety of the disciples in the garden, some political intrigue (not in depth), and other, more mundane, interactions.

Gu An definitely takes the principle of "lying low" to the extreme. However, I don't want this to be misconstrued as "why did you read a novel about a character lying-low and then get surprised when he lies low?". I don't mind that he does, I loved TTP that has the same kind of premise. But Gu An quite literally avoids as much interaction as possible. He doesn't attempt to play any kind of active role in the world whatsoever, whether covert or openly. He actively recruits disciples of mediocre talent (AKA boring!). So instead of being something more like To Be a Power in the Shadows! or TTP, a character that secretly props up an entire organization, it's more like a really dangerous tortoise that sits in its den all day. Just don't mess with it and you'll be fine.

And thus leads to the monotony of this story. At least in TTP the side-characters are far more interesting and really help to provide the same story elements that you find in other novels (action, adventure, etc). The side characters in this novel have all been very forgettable so far. Alongside this, Han Jue doesn't attempt to literally hide from everyone; people know he's strong, just not to what extent. I think this allows for more "honest" interactions between the MC and other characters.

Well, maybe I'm just not a fan of slice-of-life. This was my first time reading something of this genre and I don't think I'll try it again. <<less
