When I Ended My Unrequited Love, My Childhood Friends Became Obsessed with Me

I possessed someone. Not only did I one-sidedly love the male protagonist in a romance novel teeming with men, but I became… a side character who brings misfortune to the story. I was going to give up on my desperate unrequited love, hoping for the protagonists’ love to blossom as soon as possible, and meekly learn how to knit instead… But something’s strange. My childhood friends keep starting to become obsessed with me.

. . .

“But what if a friend starts to look pretty?”

“What do you mean ‘what if’? You should stop being friends then.”

“Then, how about we stop being friends and start dating instead?”

At this unexpected remark, I cautiously reached out and touched Ju Gaho’s forehead. Is he sick? Or has he perhaps gone crazy?

Rating it a 4 since it piqued my interest enough to potentially pay for it.

Interesting up to chapter 30 and I was curious enough to potentially pay to read more but opted not to. Read the spoiler ... more>>
Spoiler

This part assumes that you're familiar with common terminology in Chinese/Korean/Japanese webnovels. I also only read up to chapter 30.

It follows the somewhat typical trope of a transmigrator who becomes a cannon fodder, has a different personality, and then all of a sudden the characters who previously didn't give them the time of day are all over them.

Trigger/Content warning that there is physical and verbal violence inflicted upon Jung Eden from his father.

Jung Eden is the main character who transmigrated into a novel with some general knowledge of what happens but he doesn't have the real Jung Eden's memories. He also doesn't know how he transmigrated into the book. That part's a little sus (suspicious) and I feel like a common plot twist that could happen is that he IS the real Jung Eden.

Yeo Udam is the protagonist of the story that Jung Eden transmigrated into, and the person that the real Jung Eden liked. He previously didn't give two f*cks about Jung Eden but is now obsessing over him. Homeboy's a walking red flag.

Ju Gaho is their friend and I like him a lot. I'm rooting for him and Jung Eden to end up together but he's giving second male lead vibes because he's so green flag.

I wanted to read more because I wanted to see Jung Eden and Ju Gaho's characters fleshed out more, and I wanted to see where the story was going to unfold.

One thing I would like to see is Jung Eden's relationships with other characters that are nonromantic. Right now the story revolves around him, Yeo, Udam, and Ju Gaho. Ju Gaho has a sibling that was more present in the first few chapters and then fades into oblivion once Yeo and Ju Gaho start competing for Jung Eden. There's potentially a third love interest and then the abusive dad.

if you'd like more details on the story and characters. The rest of the review that's not hidden by the spoiler tag will be about the translation quality.

The translation is probably machine translated as there are sometimes pronoun errors when referring to the characters.

The translation group has the first 30 chapters free. There are an excessive amount of embedded ads and pop up ads, so much that the pages take a while to load. The rest (101 chapters) can be unlocked via coins. It's 15 coins per chapter and each coin is.05 cents, which equates to $75.75 in USD. It doesn't seem like the money goes to the author, the translation is so-so, and having pop up ads AND paywall pricing just rubs me the wrong way.

I'll buy books off of Amazon, GoogleBooks, TAPAs to read novels and webcomics because I enjoy the stories AND the authors are getting compensated for their work. While I would be willing to pay for a translation, it would have to be high quality.

I was trying to search for a korean site to buy the raws from, but ended up giving up since it was a lot of effort to me. May try again later.

This is my own preference and yours may vary but just wanted to put that out there for folks to make a decision before investing time in reading it off a certain translation site. <<less

Typical ABO story but there are some things to point out that just didn't sit well with me.
Spoiler
  • ML and the other alphas do not explain anything to MC. They did not mention how they cover him with pheromones to mark him. ML didn't even mention that he manifested and just made MC believe he had a cold. ML would also constantly keep the other love rivals away even though they're good friends. And when the 2nd ML called out the ML for how he's being a manipulative, he STILL did not tell MC the whole story. Even when the MC was angry and complaining that they tell him the truth, they STILL KEPT QUIET. I sure wish I was just imagining this, but ML admitted he was showering MC with pheromones to induce a heat cycle and imprint with him without MC knowing.
  • The MC is so frustrating. I even saw KR readers complaining how dumb it was when all the clues about his manifestation are right in front of him. I'm not gonna downplay his ab*se, but aside from that aspect, his character doesn't seem to have or do much of anything. It felt like his character plot centered on knitting for a while, but even that didn't hold much relevance aside from bringing in another love interest.

If you can get over the initial 80 something chapters, the plot does get better. It just didn't feel like there's closure for anyone.

The translation is pretty good, except that sometimes characters have the wrong pronouns used. Which didn't make it too difficult to read since up until where I read (c104), there wasn't a single female character so if something said she then you would know it was an error.

I found the main character dry and unambitious, and the MLs actions did not make much sense to me.

For example, the real male lead, ... more>>
Spoiler

Ju Gaho realised early on that Jung Eden wasn't the original Jung Eden, or at least that something about him had changed. But he didn't care about what had happened to the original Eden at all, his supposed best friend for 10 years, only loving the new Eden more than he liked his old friend. It's sad really, the old Eden disappeared and his only friends loved the stranger possessing his body more.

Later on in the story,

Spoiler

after the MC and ML got together after the MC's birthday trip with their friends, the MC spent like a month with no phone, just sleeping and being with the ML. It was like the other MLs disappeared from the face off the earth, and didn't make sense since just earlier Yeo Udam had been obsessively bothering Eden? Where the hell did they go? Eden's world suddenly became confined to Juha's house. I did not like it, even if it was painted as Eden resting and recovering from his abusive dad.

My last straw

Spoiler

when MC found out he was pregnant, he did not want to tell the ML for whatever reason. He didn't want the ML to find out so he even delayed going to the hospital. Scared he might disappoint the ML because he doesn't want to keep it? You should be scared about how you're gonna get an abortion.

[collapse]

Anyway I realised that I really didn't agree with the MC's personality so I dropped it.

All in all I managed to binge to c104 in a day, so it could be something to pass the time with. The start was decent, and reaching the end just depends on your preference. <<less
