When I Reincarnated as the Main Character of a King-themed Fantasy Manga, There was Another Reincarnator in the Village

――I think I’ve been reincarnated.

That might be the best way to describe my current situation.

I thought I died after being hit by a car, but when I came to, I was a baby. And it was in another world.

I didn’t meet any gods, so it doesn’t feel natural, but I’ve considered myself lucky to get a second chance at life. I have some regrets from my previous life, but starting over from childhood is an enticing prospect.

If there’s a problem, it’s this: after seven years of living this new life, I realized that I had become a character from a manga I once read in my previous life. And not just any character—the protagonist, Brave. There’s another thing too. It might be a source of hope, so I’ll hold off on labelling it a problem for now.

Hahaha… defeating the Demon King… if I could leverage my hero specs, it would be a piece of cake… but there is no way that’s going to happen. Phew—this isn’t good…

What’s bad about it… is that this manga follows the classic trope of a hero and his companions defeating the Demon King, who is trying to invade the world. Since it’s a typical shounen manga, the power of bonds and friendship is emphasized, and the story isn’t very dark. On the contrary, the protagonist often powers up through the encouragement of friends, which is a big concern for me.

…Can I power up through the encouragement of friends?

This was my sincere question.

In my previous life, no matter how much my classmates cheered for me during sports day, I always needed to improve my rank.

This means that the power of friendship, which should enhance my innate abilities, is something I inherently lack. And without the friendship buff, I’d be significantly weaker.

…The world is doomed.

――I can’t just do nothing while the world falls apart, especially since I’ve been reincarnated as the protagonist. I’m doing my best with daily training, thinking that even a surprise attack or anything could work. It might be futile, but there’s another concern.

Because of too much training, I’ve entirely ignored Alicia, the heroine who is supposed to be my first companion in this typical story.

I haven’t talked to her much at all, and the reason is the other issue I mentioned earlier—the mysterious boy.

I haven’t spoken much with him either, so I don’t know much about him (I don’t even know his name), but I can tell he’s another reincarnation like me. He’s been dropping lines from our previous life and flaunting his knowledge, which made it obvious. Me? I’m a loner and don’t talk much with the villagers.

So, he shouldn’t know that I’m also a reincarnator.

Can reincarnators help each other out?

If he were my ally, even if I’m not confident in my role as the protagonist, I might manage if I have a fellow reincarnator by my side! That’s what I initially thought…

But he’s just ignoring me…

He hates me.

Instead of helping each other, he’s been cosying up to Alicia and has somehow secured the childhood friend position. Seriously? Alicia is still just a kid at this point! It’s honestly creepy…

Is this another issue? Yeah, it is.

I have the issue of having my protagonist’s role usurped. Alicia, one of the heroines, is more like a stranger than a childhood friend, which will mess up the story.

If the story collapses, I won’t be able to use my knowledge of the original plot. That means the protagonist might not be able to defeat the Demon King, but that’s already irrelevant. The story was doomed from the moment I became the protagonist.

He probably wants to humiliate me, the protagonist (me). That’s why he’s been disrupting the original story from the start. If I had to title it, it would be something like, “I Reincarnated as a Mob Character and Took Over as the Protagonist to Defeat the Demon King ~ All the Heroines Followed Me Instead. The Protagonist? Let Him Try on His Own~”.

In my previous life, stories where the original protagonist loses and the reincarnation shines were popular. Maybe it’s going to be like that here, too.

I want to avoid a humiliation storyline. But it’s not all bad.

Because—this means he might defeat the Demon King for me without me having to do anything!

He might have the potential to humiliate me, but at the same time, he hopes to defeat the Demon King on his own.

So—I don’t hate him. Even though he’s spreading nasty rumours about me to the villagers, turning them against me, and making them treat me like a piece of tr*sh… somehow… I can barely tolerate it.

There’s only room for one protagonist. Let’s divide our roles. From now on, I’ll call him the true protagonist. If he aims to be the hero, I’ll step aside. I’ll head to some remote village and live a slow life. He can go ahead and defeat the Demon King or build a harem, whatever he likes.

Now that I’ve decided on my action, it’s back to training. Even if I don’t end up fighting the Demon King, I need to use my manga knowledge to train… I might need to use it against the true protagonist instead…

I hope it doesn’t come to that. I don’t want to humiliate anyone or be humiliated. I want to live a safe life.

—Ten years later.

…The true protagonist is missing?

And because of that, the Demon King’s army has made significant advances, turning the world into an apocalyptic wasteland…

—You’ve got to be kidding me…

(a spoiler free review)

First time I wrote a review on this site because I think it's worth to do so for this novel

at first you might think of this novel as the same old isekai novel where there is two reincarnated individual who knows the future progression of the storyline where the MC is a decent person and the other reincarnator is a ruiner/selfish prick who has no tact & turn everything into chaotic situations.

while those to some extent were true, this novel is actually closer to a... more>> satyrical story that's making a mockery of those multiple reincarnated-individual isekai.

have you ever read a novel comments/reviews that basically complaining on why the heck the MC didn't just follow his lustful desire & just took everyone as his wives? Or why the MC didn't just brute force everything with power if it's already obvious that he's already the strongest warrior in the world? Or why the MC even bothered to kept his knowledge of the original story a secret to himself despite he's surrounded by powerful & high ranking individual who will unconditionally trust him even without any tangible proof, instead the MC were often took the hard way into making sure that the current timeline didn't stray too much from it's original path despite it took way too much trouble and effort?

this novel are basically answering all of those questions on WHAT IF: the MC just prioritizing his desire of lust, the MC powercreeping from the start, the MC disclosing information of future events without even checking if the current timeline is staying close with the original story progression.

and that is just about the other reincarnator, the actual main character of this story is even more of a mockery to the whole isekai genre than the other reincarnator,

what we got as a main character isn't a studious individual who kept training & grinding his whole life just because the author said so. Or not an MC who's vehemently seeking revenge like no other thing mattered, we didn't even got an MC with a strong sense of justice who would go out his way to prevent a demon from comitting genocide.

what we got instead is a common japanese people who need motivation for training, a person who got angry at someone for ruining their and makes his life harder, but he didn't go out his way to plan a meticulous revenge. This MC even took his time to consider whether the people that were about to be massacred were worth helping or not (and no, he's not seeking for monetary rewards)

the main character is a common & realistic person who you'll often find at the street. But he's still interesting & kindhearted enough as a main characters and makes you wanted to root for him on his endeavours.

this novel isn't a tale of a hero, but a tragedy story where a person doing what he think it's best. <<less

I'm still not that quite good at reviews but here we go I guess:

Not really that far in, but this is genuinely a really well-written story.

The MC differs from your other OP-isekai, harem-seeking heroes, in that he's very realistically written - he's not a good or bad person, he's just a person living for himself. He doesn't suddenly grow a hero complex or decides he's gonna save everyone - he just does things for the sake of himself.

Some people may take issue with this - a lot of the comments... more>> on the original site did look down on the MC for not being so active in his "hero" role but with a mixture of his original personality, his cold childhood, and the presence of the other enthusiastic reincarnator, you can't really blame him for not trying to stick to his original role for the sake of humanity.

Spoiler

Originally, he himself is somewhat of a normal person, getting scared by monsters and fighting (which is an obvious thing to be scared of as a modern person) and also not really being into the whole friendship-power up thing Shounen Heroes usually use. And then his detachment is made worse by the fact the village that took him in as an orphan just kinda leave his survival to himself, not really prioritising him in times of famine and letting him find his own way to survive, which he doesn't really blame as he understands where they're coming from, but doesn't really create any strong feelings between them. So he doesn't really have that attachment to the world - why break your body and mind helping a society that don't really care about you? And the reincarnator seems more than happy to take the hero role from him, so why not just let him do as he pleases?

[collapse]

The setting is pretty grim - there's none of that tropey hero Shounen Isekai stuff you see in the usual stories - people are selfish/realistic (however you wanna put it), and the demons are completely evil. Even our MC, Brave, after the true protagonist's collapse doesn't immediately go "looks like I'm gonna have to jump in and save the day" - he takes a while to ruminate on if he should even fight the demons in the first place like he originally should or just run away like everyone else, which got some bashing in comment section of the original site, but it makes sense considering he has little to no attachment to the people of this world.

But overall, seems like the author has a good sense for the story and has created a very interesting work. They have taken the more human approach to this kind of story - rather than tropey shounen stuff that are a dime a dozen, they decided to show a more mature aspect, showing how people can be selfish and at times be caring, asking the question of "Should you fight for a world that doesn't care about you?", which is definitely intriguing. I'm really looking forward to how this work would develop.

Translators seem to be doing a good job - hope you keep up the good work! <<less

The description of this novel is indicative of the quality that can be expected in the story. Let me explain.

There are two main viewpoints shown to readers: Cain and Brave. Cain is the one who wishes to defeat the Demon King and save the world. Brave just wants to survive the dangers of medieval fantasy. After a time skip, readers are shown Cain and his party subjugating hordes of monsters and parading through villages as heroes. Brave, on the other hand, is living modestly as a solo D-rank adventurer surrounded... more>> by acquaintances. Despite the disparity between both individuals, Cain still feels that Brave could be a rival for his love interests.

The two protagonists also establish that they are reincarnated into a manga. Despite reincarnating, both do not seem to actually be capable of stopping the Demon King. Cain gathers the usual harem of girls, while Brave trains his physical and magical strength to survive solo. This lack of foresight leads to the king of Eustia dying in a pivotal battle against one of the four Heavenly Kings under the Demon King.

This story is garbage. The chapters flip perspectives constantly, so the narrative voice is always different. Both Cain and Brave are not engaging protagonists that I can root and cheer for. Cain is an arrogant groomer that wants to bask in glory and women without giving the effort to earn it. Brave lacks any characteristics besides getting stronger to not die. I cannot recommend this isekai story to anyone who has ever read an isekai or fantasy novel or a good novel.

This is my personal rating. 1 star is bad. 2 is meh. 3 is good. 4 is great. 5 is a masterpiece. <<less

The author does a great job showing what happens when someone becomes a narcissist just because they know the "future." A lot of reincarnation stories romanticize the concept, but most people are just ordinary. They should recognize their limitations, life isn't like a novel, and things don't always go according to plan.

The protagonist, though a bit irresponsible at first, fits this mold. He knows he's just a regular guy but doesn't fully realize that even so, he's got the responsibility of saving the world since he essentially became the hero.... more>> Honestly, if I were reincarnated as a hero, I'd probably want to live a normal life too, instead of fighting demons and watching my comrades die. The burden of people's hopes is a lot to handle, and it makes sense why he made certain decisions. After all, he never asked to be the hero.

He's a very rational and practical character, always weighing the pros and cons before acting. His intelligence and decision-making only faltered because of a certain someone's narcissism born from being overly confident about saving the world. Still, he's surprisingly likeable, and pretty mature. His pessimism might be off-putting at times, but given the world's collapsing around him, it's understandable. As they say, we suffer more in imagination than in reality.

His flaws actually add a lot of depth and charm to his character, making him feel more human. He's not the fairy tale hero people often fantasize about, just a guy trying to live life his own way.

The side characters and even the minor ones in the background are well-portrayed. They all feel like real people with their own lives, driven by human nature, whether that makes them seem selfish or foolish. The story itself has more depth than I expected, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. Definitely worth giving it a try.

PS. The story is surprisingly dark, merciless, death is everywhere. Each chapter is actually pretty short, you can just read each of them in under 5 minutes.

The way he slaughters demons is so satisfying, it feels like I'm reading Goblin Slayer again. <<less

When I started reading this novel I didn't really have many expectations about the story, that it would be similar to pretty much any isekai series. My thoughts were shattered after I read, there are many praiseworthy points of this novel.

This novel gets straight to the point in chapter 1. In most works, I often see the author spend at least the first 5 chapters writing about the origin of the main character (something the author clearly wrote poorly in the introduction section). introduction), it causes a certain boredom that... more>> reduces my interest. But here, that doesn't exist, the author really goes deep into the story without any lengthy backstory because the author did that in the introduction. This accelerated my interest in continuing to read.

What makes this work interesting next is its content. In short, it's like konosuba, an isekai that satirizes other isekai but in a darker direction. I'm sure you've read works where the MC gets isekai and takes advantage of his knowledge of the plot and takes the position of the main character. But have you ever wondered what will actually happen when those things happen? Take advantage of future knowledge to rob the female protagonist, create an innocent harem, save characters who aren't worth saving, build reputation without considering the consequences... etc.

But unlike other works where MC's actions are moralized and the main character is blackened. No miracles happen here, the consequences of breaking the original plot become more dire than ever. Reading the work, we will see the true image of ourselves - modern people who do not face any dangers. Our MC is truly an ordinary person who carries a huge responsibility for himself, he is very realistic. Some people might think he's heartless but that's actually what everyone would definitely do when they find themselves in that situation. Consideration is given to whether risking one's life for unrelated people is really placed in the work, whether shouldering a responsibility that is too big for oneself is also. This is a bright spot for our MC.

This is not the kind of cliché story like revenge, accidentally taking away the main character's chance and accidentally saving the world, traveling and forming a harem,... This is a story about a person trying to live ! <<less

This web novel is something I really wanted to see for a long time.

There are basically no side characters that stay along with our protagonist, just facing the overbearing doom of the near end of humanity via war (more like slaughter) due to the demons. We see how the world reacts and how they face these dilemmas, with the reader and protagonist knowing full well that the world could’ve had a better future.

About our protagonist: He’s basically a normal guy, not too brave but diligent enough to try and survive... more>> without people helping him ever since he was young: so he’s fairly strong from the start. If the plot were to originally play out, he would’ve been helped out by the childhood friend’s parents for food and affection—but was taken away that opportunity by the other transmigrator. He doesn’t believe he could’ve been the hero anyway due to his low self-esteem, but continues to live his life through the mundane actions in his life as a low ranked adventurer while hiding his strength. He thinks about traveling the world, but based himself in one town since he’s lazy to move—pretty normal, right? But that all changed, when the demons attacked.

Spoiler

With the failure of the other transmigrator, the kingdom and empire go into chaos—almost all of the original story heroines die from the first battle by only 1 of the 4 demon generals magical attack, and the hero had gone missing. We see the town our protagonist is based in is filled with despair and fear, and our protagonist knowing that if he doesn’t do anything—it’s all over for humanity.

Despite knowing power-ups like the holy sword and light spirit contract, which can be tantamount in the battle against the demons, he refuses to get both of them—since the former relies on the power of bonds and friendship (he basically has no one) and the latter is due to respect since he sees the spirit as a friend. Since he trained with the light spirit beforehand (since he was born as the original hero), he goes off and slaughters the demons in his path. He takes caution, but no mercy; willing to use dirty tricks to win, since without them he’ll die. So begins his adventure, to kill the 4 demon generals that are across the kingdom and empire—as for the demon king? Unless he gets the aforementioned power-ups, he’s screwed lol.

[collapse]

The other transmigrator:

He’s an arrogant piece of work, you know? Pretty much took the original hero’s place and failed since he didn’t fit the requirements in power potential. From how he acts, it’s as if he never saw the world as a living place, but a game; the women? Potential harem members! Using his knowledge of the original work, he can save the characters that weren’t saved in the original—and turn them into heroines—making him the alpha hero instead of the beta original hero who couldn’t save them. People now think of him as a prophet that knows the future, the savior that humanity needed to fight against the true enemy: the demons! He’s got it all under control. He even stopped the war between the kingdom and empire; combining their strengths, heroines, boss characters, and OP items will save the day, right? ... Obviously, this blew up in his face.

Spoiler

Some of the heroines have bad blood against each other, with the only one managing them being the childhood friend (saintess). Not only that, the other transmigrator is seen as a h**ny dog by the princess, and sees his ‘prophecies’ as lacking, since he’s messed up the story so much. The boss characters are eager for battle, so they don’t even listen to him and cause the demon king generals to attack earlier than they should’ve. Essentially, he saw the characters around him like—well, characters; when they should’ve been seen and respected as people.

When one of the demon generals attacked and basically killed almost all of the original heroines, the saintess was still alive, and if she had escaped with the other transmigrator—could’ve revived all of the dead heroines back to life. So one of the last surviving heroines sacrifices her entire existence as a diversion to save both the saintess and transmigrator. Guess what he did?

He ran.

That bit*h ran away, leaving the heroine’s sacrifice in vain—as she cursed him with her last moments—and the saintess dying, meaning the heroines aren’t coming back.

Afterwards, he teams up with one of the scientist antagonists (he kept him alive since he saw use in his research), where he makes a plan to kidnap citizens and turn them into mutants to fight against the demons. He even uses this chance to rizz up girls who lost their boyfriends due to his own kidnappings. And his ultimate goal? Find the protagonist, make him into a mutant and fight the demon lord. Since mutants have a small lifespan, it’s killing two birds with one stone!

[collapse]

Some things I wish was more developed:

Spoiler

I wish we got to see more of the protagonist’s childhood. Like how the situations were like, how he was treated. We were only told in snippets over the course of the story, but I’d rather be shown and not told.

I also want expansion of the side characters, since we mainly see through the protagonist, the other transmigrator, and sometimes the princess. I wanted to see how the childhood friend saintess thought of things, since she’s basically the focal point of the change from the original, but I don’t even think she had more than 5 lines in the entire story.

[collapse]

But yeah, love this story—5 stars! Hopefully gets an adaptation soon. If anyone knows more stories like this, please give recommendations! <<less

A very realistic depiction of the typical Hero vs Demon King scenario, with the most relatable, truly ordinary main character I have ever read. I made this account solely to review this novel, it is worth it.

Kindly ignore that 2 star review, that person seems to have completely misunderstood the novel or is simply malicious.

I originally assumed that this story was going to be a shallow one where everyone thinks that the MC is a loser and the foil is awesome until the MC reveals/discovers he's actually OP and beats up the foil and gets super popular. But it turned out that this story has certain things it wants to do, and it's willing to do things that shallower stories wouldn't be willing to. First of all, translation is readable, but iffy. Avoid if you lack tolerance for uncertainty. Story is cliche, but dual flawed protagonists model is unique. One just wants to live long and peacefully, in spite of having best fighting talent in humanity. Other wants to be victorious harem protagonist, while being incompetent and cowardly. So far only former showed character growth. Story has nice, fast pace, but power scale is bizarre. Humanity has two people who can more or less take on Four Heavenly Kings one-on-one, original MC and battle... more>> addict girl, but everyone else is so much weaker, even if a million knights gathers, they couldn't injure one. <<less
