If You Yusui had died completely, he would have been just an ordinary crown prince in the history books who failed to seize the throne, lying in a small grave with the terrible posthumous title given by his father, left to be gossiped about by future generations.

But he was reborn! And kept being reborn repeatedly.

In his first life, he failed in the power struggle and was sentenced to death by his own father, with the posthumous title “Crown Prince Li”.

(TL: “Li 厉” meaning difficult to endure, terrible, or aggravating)

In his second life, he was diligent and cautious, but eventually died from serious illness.

In his third life, he bided his time and gathered talented people, but was ultimately executed by his third imperial brother’s army, without even leaving a complete corpse.

….

In his fifteenth life, he was extremely careful and only sought to survive, but was sent to pacify refugees and ended up hacked to death.

In his sixteenth life, the deposed crown prince opened his eyes and thought: “I’m tired. Whoever makes me unhappy, I’ll make them even more unhappy. To hell with respecting the worthy and being gentle and kind.”

So upon opening his eyes, You Yusui’s first action was to arrange for the most expensive nanmu wood coffin for himself, and then proceeded to act recklessly.

He insulted the emperor’s favorite concubine, punished his younger brother, beat officials, and repeatedly pushed his father’s boundaries.

Looking at the crying court and harem, You Yusui sat on his palanquin with a long-stemmed pipe and chuckled. “A person should do things befitting their posthumous title.”

You Yusui thought that with his defiant and troublesome behavior, his father would immediately depose him and offer him a cup of poison. Instead, he became his father’s most beloved son.

You Yusui: “My father probably has some issues.”

And those officials who hadn’t yet adjusted to the crown prince’s change from gentle and kind to troublesome: “The crown prince has probably gone mad.”

5 out of 5 stars.

I loved every inch of this book. It was silly and flawed in places and could have used some polish but none of that detracted anything from the enjoyment.

I think the Emperor is the most realistic depiction I have seen in any danmei, he was flawed but you could understand him, funny but deadly serious, loyal but willing to kill to do what was necessary.

... more>> The MC and ML were lovely, absolutely soothing to the soul.

This novel was funny and emotional and striking, with familial and romantic love.

I would highly recommend reading this as a palette cleanser or if you're just looking to enjoy a high-handed over the top silly love story that can pack a punch of emotions out of nowhere. <<less

This novel is really funny! But more importantly, it carries out the plot in a way that averts a lot of things I find annoying.

The novel has what sounds like a typical setup - the MC is disliked or neglected by everyone, and he doesn't want to become the leader or participate in the power-struggle, so he slacks off and/or just does whatever he wants. In the process, he accidentally wins everyone's favor. 99% of the time, how the story plays out is similar - the MC is forced into... more>> being the leader even after he makes it clear he doesn't want to, and people who were portrayed as being terrible to him in the past are redeemed.

Any misunderstandings are A) caused by people being unrealistically oblivious, B) Happen without the MC meaning for them to happen, and people not believing him when he tries to deny them, and C) are ultimately never cleared up, leading to too many annoying misunderstandings. This novel averts this.

Like other novels where the MC is the child of a ruthless, powerful figure who's manipulating his children in a power struggle, the MC's got issues with his Emperor father. But the Emperor eventually starts to favor him once the MC stops giving a shit. In other stories with similar setups, the parental figure is eventually redeemed, their actions are retroactively made to be more reasonable because of circumstances or whatever, and the MC stops hating them and makes peace even if they can't be a loving family. But this MC doesn't stop hating the Emperor. The two start getting along better as the Emperor starts caring more, but everyone remembers that the Emperor is a terrible father and has been horrible to the MC in the past.

Along the same lines, the Emperor isn't a terrible person in a flat way; he's legitimately a good Emperor and fighter, he's not s*upid, he works to get rid of corruption and make the common people's lives better, and he says and does some funny sh*t and is entertaining as a character. But he never stops being ruthless and, even though he starts caring more about the MC, still completely ignores/would be willing to kill/disregards the wants and needs of other family members. Characters aren't set up as "good vs. Evil" in this story, and the Emperor is a good example of that.

The MC's circumstances also aren't being set up as "MC is forced into being the Emperor even though he hates it and despite trying everything not to become the Emperor". It could change later since I haven't finished the story yet, but it's more like the MC is being set up as the person who will support the next Emperor and be tied to him politically, keeping him safe and in a position of power without being forced into being in charge. So I'm glad that the plot isn't painfully forcing the MC.

Also, the misunderstandings in the story aren't painful, and most characters are smart enough to avoid having s*upid understandings. For example, the "big" misunderstanding, that the MC is really weak and ill: this misunderstanding is not only being enforced by the MC himself, but other characters around him start realizing that he's pretending because they aren't s*upid, and then they go along with it anyway because they understand why the MC is doing pretending without someone explicitly explaining it to them. Some misunderstandings for the sake of comedy happen, but these are small, quickly cleared up, and don't hang on like a dingleberry on bu*t hair.

Reading this novel is a nice experience. There's other great things too, like the MC and ML's relationship not being full of s*upid drama. Female characters are developed characters. Has a good balance between silliness and seriousness. A great time, highly recommend, 5/5. <<less

I loooove this story. The synopsis did this story bad. I was expecting cliche story and so on. The synopsis made the MC look like a foolish babe MC, the usual salt fish syndrome etc made me almost pass over this gem. Thank God I didn't.

The MC warms my heart. The novel looks into trauma, revenge, politics and so on. Imagine being a figurehead crown prince where the emperor has made you a target for aristocratic families, your mother the empress schemed to death and other princes are powerful and... more>> smart.

Throw in the fact of a slow poison and the emperor deliberately making you s*upid through incorrect education so as to make you a perfect target. Now imagine living this way 15 times.

Of course, he went mad and became tired. My favorite MC...🥹 <<less

Initially, I thought that the MC would be an OP, would get his revenge in a high profile manner etc. But this is more about living well with ML. This is a very good story. Although common, but it is written well so I didn't get bored.

I also like the emperor's personality. He cared for his people but at the same time cruel to achieve common good and stability.

The reason for MC repeated reincarnation is mentioned in the extra ch's

I read it all in two days because it was better than I ever hoped for. The main couple interactions are so cute and their romance seems natural. I can’t tell if it’s just me but the doctor Cui and Xie Tan have so much tension together, I wished there was more words about them. Xie Gong and Teacher Gu were such amazing old men, I laughed every time they were together.

I came to love the emperor, his obsessions with bears was hilarious to read. While I hated how he... more>> acted with the Queen Mother for so long I understood that he couldn’t go too harsh or the civilians would have thought he was abusing his power.

When I saw how many chapters the novel had I thought that it would be a nice background novel, something to read over time when I can’t find anything else. But even around 200 chapters I wished it was longer. <<less
