The writing is pretty bad, and the MC is not a very interesting character. In my opinion. I've only read 15 chapters though, so maybe this story becomes 'unique' or worth reading after that.

I only read about 15 chapters (up to 3.3), and the writing is very repetitive, and the MC and writing are both 'cringy'. Definitely feels like it's aimed towards a super young audience, but it doesn't have shounen tag...

Writing: There is soooo much repetition, it often reads like the Author has amnesia and forgot that they already... more>> gave us this info, 10 times over. The amount of times 'Reo' will be described as handsome, tall, and popular, made me go a little crazy. I understood it the first 10 times, in chapter 1. Can we maybe talk about his personality?? or your history with him?? how they met/struggles they went through?? or anything interesting at all???

Each chapter read like a 'word count' had to be hit, and the Author just kind of does the basic info you would expect from this kind of story, and repeats it. "She is cute and popular and hates men" - ok now repeat that info, for the next 8 chapters, INGRAIN it into them!!! Have 3 other characters come up and say that same sentence to the MC as well!! Genius! Now the readers won't forget she is popular!

Almost 80% of info, WILL be repeated, at least once, a few paragraphs after it is given. It's very odd. That made this read a bit like a fever dream to me, because I would ask "Wait, I was JUST told this info 2 paragraphs above... why are we repeating the exact same sentence?.. Ok now I see the same sentence AGAIN.... and AGAIN... wth...."

MC: I don't care for him too much. He's the typical "Oh this girl is so popular and hot, she is way above me. I must get her permission to even talk to her friends, and I must never dream of talking to her" while being SUPER calm during interactions with them, making the girls flustered if anything.... I don't like this MC trope. 'No Love Comedy (SNAFU) ' did this trope in a good/interesting way, by giving us a lot of internal dialogue and interesting convos, as well as somewhat realistic set-ups (like the club). This does not have any of that. I do like his doting relationship with his sister, and his 'calm' personality, but the CONSTANT 'comparing' to and between others, based on 'popularity' level or looks, and his plain s*upidity, is making me super uninterested... I've seen this 'trope' of MC too often, at least give him like 1 unique thing. (Actually maybe that's the sis/bro bond). I won't give big spoilers, I haven't even read much. This happens like in 2nd chapter, and just continues up to 3.3 (then you have to pay, no thanks).
Spoiler

The MC's childhood friend, says he likes this quiet shy girl, so the MC decides to help. How does he help? He decides to 'befriend' her, for like 3 weeks, talking to her every free chance he gets, so they become super close. What is his plan after this? He doesn't know, and we don't know. It's s*upid. He tells her friends, that HE is interested in her, because of course he can't say his friend is! (Why can't he just say he wants to be friends?? We don't know..) that's why he is talking to her, so now HER friends all think he's trying to date her, and are supporting him. He will 'internally' think "Oh no, but I don't even like her!" at least 8 times, by chapter 13. (in span of like 5 chapters, we GET IT).

- Ok re-reading this, this may have been the 'comedic' part. If it's funny to you, then I guess this is up your alley, but I didn't find it funny, so to me it was like "why would you say that, and then regret it, and still not fix it....?")

After like 3 weeks of them meeting at the garden she tends to, he thinks 'Oh I should let my friend who likes her, know that she likes gardening, he may be able to meet her out here at her garden'. 15 chapters in!!! He knew that on day one though....

[collapse]
He is annoyingly active in certain areas (like be-friending girl his friend likes), and annoyingly inactive in others (like dispelling rumors he likes her, or getting his friend to even meet with her once). I've only read 15 chapters so could be proven wrong, but so far there is nothing unique here, just same old 'non-popular plain male MC gets the most popular girl' trope, but written pretty poorly imo. A 'turn your brain off' read, which = a bad read.

The rest is like super slice of life, like:

She ate the food. She is cute while eating. I never realized how cute. But she is very cute. My sister is also cute.

Many cute girls like my best friend Reo. He is so popular and cool and handsome and tall. I am just his childhood friend, quite and invisible. But I don't mind, cause I like Reo too.

Oshi has a popular childhoood friend too. We are similar. her childhood friend is also tall and pretty and popular.

Her name is Asahani. She is pretty, and popular. She is a lot like Reo. They are both tall and pretty and popular. Compared to her, I am nothing..

- repeat repeat repeat

- like that level of 'basic' info, said in such a plain text boring narrative way, over and over and over.... <<less

Not nearly as terrible as the other review made it seem. I can't call it amazing, but it's definitely decent. It follows a fairly generic premise of 'normal guy has somehow got onto the "perfect school idol's" radar, who is not nearly as perfect as she portrays to the rest of the world'. In this case, he's a childhood friend (henceforth CHF, as it'll come up a lot lol) of a male version perfect school idol, and his friend falls for the popular girl's quiet friend.

As you can see, there's... more>> a lot of symmetry, and it gets brought up a lot and there's more examples. Popular person who has quirks, with a faithful CHF who supports them and are just really good friends. There's the female duo and now the male one. The popular ones are pretty dependent on their far-more-skilled-and-homemaker CHFs, and they really respect/care for them and see all their best qualities. Meanwhile the 'invisible' ones in the relationship have slight jealousy, yet still care for and adore their popular-yet-quirky CHFs. There's a lot of duality going on as you can see.

Anyway, as to the 'repetition' that the other reviewer states, they seem to have not realized that the chapters are broken up by the translators, so the '15 chapters' they've read are actually... 3. Maybe 60% of the way through a Light Novel, and is honestly very par for the course for LNs in general. So yes, we see that his friend is tall, handsome, and popular like 8 times in the first chapter, because it's important for characterization. Once the story is out of the prologue that tones down of course.

The writing isn't amazing, but it's valid enough. The author has a plot in mind, and the characters are developed well enough. Obviously, the most important are the male and female leads, with the most focus on them. The other halves of their duos get the remainder of the characterization (oh and his 5YO sister). There's the standard absentee parents (working overseas, constantly busy, etc), with a large house for the plot to take place in. Think ToraDora. (it's the gold-standard of setting these tropes up lol).

Honestly if you treat it as just yet another LN high school romance story then it's just fine. As I said, it's not a masterpiece, but it's quite fluffy and having a B-couple to contrast and compare to the main couple's romance is a nice touch.

A couple of bonus points for genre-saavy readers:

  1. MC goes through his standard 'dense about feelings due to inherant low self-esteem', but in this case we get the female-friend's version first, and all of the 4 people conspire to help each of them out. So any dense moments are quickly dealt with. Everyone is very supportive of their own friends, and in general making everyone happy.
  2. The B-couple gets together at the end of the first volume, and after that both characters get a nice personality growth. The shy girl develops a pretty vicious tongue when she talks with the MC - because they're so incredibly similar they can be open with each other, and she is a massive help with the MC get over his own issues so that he can start the real process of getting together with the main heroine.
  3. Another CHF of the MC's (we actually knew she existed a long time ago, I just didn't mention it) shows up in V2, and it seems like she's going to be another love triangle or something, but instead the story doesn't go that route. She jumps in and causes the heroine to initially panic, which just drives her forward, but she flat out isn't interested in romance with the MC, so what would be really annoying drama gets avoided gracefully.
Anyway, as I said, it's not bad. Pretty much generic LN fare, in that it's not heavy (pun intended) and the writer is probably like a 18 year old amateur.

I can't speak about the translation quality as I haven't checked out the source material, but they clearly speak English well enough that IF it was MTL it's been heavily edited for readability. Frankly I don't think it was MTL at all, but either way the TL'ers have made this eminently readable compared to some. Kudos to them. <<less
