Who Are You Calling Gege? (Esports)

Jiang Shi is a gaming livestreamer with outstanding appearance and top-notch skills.

At the same time, he is also an extreme hand-con and face-con.

He simply has no resistance at all.

He once fell in love with someone online because of a close-up of his hand. He stayed up late every day after the livestream to use his secondary account to help his partner gain points.

The key is that he is also sweet-mouthed. In order to please his partner, he always calls him “Gege” and sounds very obedient.

But later, Jiang Shi forgets the password of his secondary account, and the relationship ends without success.

Having lost such a high-quality partner, Jiang Shi recorded his feelings on his secondary Weibo account with a look of melancholy.

[I have only called one person “Gege”, and he will be the only one I call that in the future.]

[His hands are so big, he should be able to hold my entire neck, right? Will he like to grab me?]

[His fingers are so long, and he can help me do many, many things.]

[I don’t know if my Gege prefers doing it from the front or behind…]

This sad mood lasted until Jiang Shi saw the photo of captain Xie Xu on the recently popular TLG team——

He is simply a heavenly dish!*)

Jiang Shi: I’m alive again.

Jiang Shi sneaks into the TLG team that night.

One time, when he is duo-queuing with Xie Xu, he sees the other party’s amazing teamfight capability with his support hero, and blurts out: “Gege is awesome!”

That day, Jiang Shi is punished with extra training.

In the silent and deserted training room, Jiang Shi is grabbed by the neck and forced to look up.

Xie Xu’s slender index finger brushes across his lips, his lips curve into a smile, “Who are you calling Gege?”

——

Xie Xu once had a boyfriend, but he disappeared a few days after he won him over.

He found a blank Weibo account through the other party’s QQ.**

After waiting for a long time, the other party started posting, using bold words. The last post read, “Gege, I’m here!”

Below is a photo of Xie Xu attached.

The next day, a newcomer comes to the team, and his voice is very similar to his little boyfriend.

He also pretended to be very obedient in front of him.

The newcomer copies the exact methods used during their past online relationship, trying to ensnare him bit by bit.

Xie Xu curls his lips and accepts it all without a hitch.

Finally, Xie Xu looked at the newcomer – eyes red and body trembling – circles his fingers, lowers his head, and chuckles directly against his ear,

“I prefer it from behind.”

Yup focus on silly interaction, romance-comedy, and a bit life drama, not so spectacular but it hooked me oh~. Although many times I got annoyed by lele (mc's team mate and follower) but he do became important character for our mc-ml-fans interaction. Average but enough, oh btw it a bit explicit (chinese level) and plus MC (shou) falk in love first! (This just my cup of tea ah~)

Reads like a 4-star but the amount of secondhand embarrassment from this novel is absolutely diabolical.

How can it be soooo ludicrous, so embarrassing... that it’s incredibly fun to read?

The gaming in this novel is pretty surface level but it works & it establishes the setting nicely. It is the CRAZY ANTICS from MC & his fans that make it so hard to put down this novel. The romance was cute & I was screaming at MC to hurry & spill his truth. A hand & face con? Same here, Jiang... more>> Shi. <<less

I'm literally making an account just to review this lol last time I checked the 1 star ratings are too many for my comfort. If I have to be 100% objective, this novel is like, 4.5/5 so getting 3.9 is unfair.

anyway

this is good! I've been craving a shou MC like jian rong so getting recommended this novel is just perfect! While those two characters are actually different, but they have similar vibes and I especially love that particular vibes!

this novel itself is 90% romcom, the esports part is more of... more>> a background than anything. Still, it excels at being both heartwarming and downright hilarious, so props to that. The characters aren't groundbreaking, esp if you have read many danmeis before, but they're entertaining and do have dimensions. They're never boring, and always able to make me laugh. The plot is also quite simple, there's no mindblowing plot-twist, but it suits the kind of story this novel is.

As for the translation: the translator is honest that this is edited mtl, props to that. And honestly, their translation is superb (english-wise, at the very least). It's not awkward, the grammar are good, and it's consistent throughout the series. I forgot it was mtl halfway reading ch 2 ngl. Lately, it's been quite hard to find translation that is easy to read, so I think I'm a bit biased when judging this particular translation. TL, DR: it's good. Read it. <<less

This isn’t a bad story—but it’s not a great one either. If you’ve read I Can Do It by Jiàng Zi Bèi, you might find yourself thinking this feels like a lighter, somewhat less cohesive version of it. In some ways, it honestly reads like a knock-off (sorry!).

That said, this novel does have its own moments of uniqueness. For one, the fans of the MC are a level of unhinged that’s both absurd and weirdly endearing.

Minor Spoiler-

Sending him cond*ms to help him sleep with the ML levels of crazy

[collapse]

It’s ridiculous, it’s over-the-top, but it’s also kind of funny and supportive in the most chaotic way possible.

A word of caution: this story is definitely not for readers who struggle with secondhand embarrassment. The MC is peak embarrassment-core. He will drag you through all five stages of grief with his antics. If you’re into that kind of chaotic humor, you’ll probably be entertained. If not... maybe steer clear.

The ML fits the classic “perfect from A to Z” gong mold—caring, competent, gentle, but unfortunately lacks real depth. The same goes for the side characters. They have their moments, sure, but overall feel underdeveloped and more like background decorations than people.

Despite all that, I did find myself laughing out loud in places. There are genuinely fun, entertaining moments scattered throughout the story. It just doesn’t quite come together as something emotionally resonant or narratively solid.

In the end, this feels like one of those reads where you finish and think: “That was fun... I think? I don’t regret reading it, but I’m also not sure what I got out of it.”

Final thoughts:

Read it if you’re on an eSports BL binge and want something chaotic, light, and ridiculous.

Skip it if you’re looking for a story with emotional depth, strong character development, or a well-structured plot. <<less

I’ve never been interested in esport novels but pick this one up cause of the translator and!!!! It’s so good!!

The MC is hilariously shameless online but acts super sweet around ML (who seems aware and amused by this) and is a brat to everyone else. But despite the shameless stuff he says online (like constantly talking about sleeping with ML or just straight up asking if ML sleeps naked) he’s has no experience irl and gets flustered easily~

This novel is a funny sweet read and I’m looking forward to each... more>> new chapter! (Can’t wait for them to find out about MC alt account) <<less

Firstly a lot of love for translator for a good translation thay make me impatience and mtl the novel and im can successfully say 10/10 for this good book.

If you want to read a pure fluff and don't want to read any angst or doesn't care for a plot that doesn't have any backstep etc. Then this a good choice for you. The comedy the fluff well developed. The plot also good. If you someone who doesn't care too much about the deep of E-SPORT then you will enjoy it... more>> coz the author doesn't go that deep to e-sport and it well balanced between then e-sport, fluff, comedy, and romance. <<less

Better than I expected. It was written as it is in the sypnosis which is quite shocking by the way since most of the time authors tends to deviate from the original written in the sypnosis.

Anyways, among the e-sports story I've read so far this is by far the ones who actually based off their position in accordance to their role in the game in real life.

I mean, most of the time the captains would be the jungler when in reality most of the captains in e-sports are like the... more>> ML the healers or the tanks. This is because they have the most important skills when playing which the map awareness.

Also, the MC being a bottom laner is quite new too since most of the time they'll be the mid laner.

Overall, it's good. Might as well add that somehow I do kind of feel bad for North, I mean, he wasn't pointless when he went for a more brighter future when he joins the SK eSports team, but it has its own consequences, he was ostracized. It's much more harder to work in an environment where you were ostracized than having no friends with your workmate. Though he got all his karma at the end. <<less

this is not very game-focused, more focused on the romance instead. I came here after reading "don't pretend to be good" and found this to be quite similar although this MC isn't trying to put on an obedient persona on purpose. MC is a small streamer who's shameless while live-streaming, even calling the ML husband, but irl he's quite thin-skinned and obedient only towards the ML since he fell for his face.

this was v sweet and fluffy, although the mc's backstory was heartbreaking, which only made me like him more... more>> as a character bc he did whatever he could to survive alone before joining the team. I like that the MC isn't weak and can stand up for himself, both in the game and outside. The ML is also super doting towards him

overall was a good read, although it may just be my personal preference since I like this type of shameless protagonist and eat it up every time. <<less

Super sweet and fluffy novel with the most shameless MC I've ever read. I've lost count of how many times I felt secondhand embarrassment on his behalf when something embarrassing he said or did got exposed.

Don't expect too much gaming here. That's just the setting but the author mainly focuses on the MC's interactions with his fans online and of course the romance.

Only minor complaint is that they took too long to get together. They were flirting with each other for a while before it became official, and I just... more>> wanted them to hurry up and kiss already!! <<less

Interesting! The age gap, the background, and their relationship development. Cute and fluffy. There're some past moment about the main couple that makes me cry too. But the mc's cutie style.. It's a lil bit cringe for me. Uh.. Sometimes I accept that somehow. Because that's cute.

Maybe more like a 4.5/5, but I'm rounding up. I usually don't like esports BL, but I really liked the main character's personality and found the story to be pretty funny. Although it could get a little boring / slow at times, and there was quite a bit of stereotypical face-slapping, all in all it was still an enjoyable read. I also felt that the translation was easy to read and flowed well.

This is such a cute story. I 100% recommended if you’re looking for something soft to read.

I won’t lie though the amount of times I had to turn of my phone and walk away from second hand embarrassment was countless. However it had me bursting out laughing so it’s such a fun read.

it also didn’t have any particular toxic or red flag for me so PLEASE READ

This is a very funny and cute novel, the MC is constantly facing 2nd hand embarrassment and his teammate and also fan Jiang Lele is always pitting him which is hilarious. There’s gaming aspects but main focus is the relationship is I quite like. Nice read.

This novel feels like a no smut fanfic with a humiliation and edging tag that gets fully written out with only the hints of smut.

I’m currently on chapter 88 so I’ll just write about what I’ve read so far.

Firstly, I came here with high hopes as the rating is particularly high, and while it was a decent enough read, having a 4.5 is really overdoing it.

Within the first 20 chapters u was already annoying with the side character Lele and as I continued to read this, that feeling only grew.... more>> He was literally there just to fulfill the humiliation tag I awarded this novel.

It felt like the author really enjoyed forcing the MC into embarrassing situations and as someone that gets bad second hand embarrassment, it was so hard trying to read this and not be annoyed with lele as he was the main cause of every embarrassing situation as if secrets and personal affairs was just unforgivable he serves as a means to out the MC every single step of the way.

It would have been fine once or twice, but 9 times out of 10 if lele shows up in a scene it’s because he’s about to cause some form of embarrassment towards the MC. There’s probably 1 or 2 scenes where’s he fine and actually behaving like a normal human being and not like a gossipy aunt that can’t keep anything to themselves.

as for the edging tag? This novel does the whole almost-spilled-the-beans-but-oops!-someone-interrupted-as-soon-as-i-worked-up-the courage! Spiel and it’s quiet honestly enough.

The first 2 times I can let it slide as it does help build up suspense but every. F*cking. Time? To the point where they don’t even end up talking about it, the MC just ends up connecting the dots on his f*cking own because very time the ML wanted to bring it up lele, the coach, the cat and the entire universe was just their to screw with them.

i think this novel was just my pet peeve multiplied by 100 and it sucks because I was looking forward to it, but instead all I got is an annoying jumble of what annoys me the most piled into one.

3.5/5 <<less

Dont come in expecting full on esport actions and fully packed matches. This is an esport novel that really focus on relationship both friends and lovers only slightly on family. Its fun and easy to read and understand. Its funny and entertaining as well. I personally love the MC and the ML together. They suit and are good for each other.

this is around 4.5 rating for me but it has many 1 star reviews so I bumped it up to 5. Its good but not as strong as stories like... more>> ‘I Can Do It’ or ‘Glory’ which are more memorable. This is a one-time read for me and that’s enough. <<less

The secondhand embarrassment when our MC, Jiang Shi, uses his alt account and flirts in the most shameless way about what he wants ML, Xu Xie, to do to and with him. Brought me so much joy and laughter that I binged 70 chapters until 6am. I'm a sucker for the secret identity trope and this story does it in such a delightful way. Jiang Shi's reactions during the (multiple) reveals were too real and hilarious.

I really enjoyed the slow build up of the MC and ML's relationship.... more>> Despite how outright Jiang Shi is about his thirst for Xu Xie, that admiration/face-con kink eventually builds into genuine feelings of love and an official bf status until later in the book (around ch 70ish). Like others said, Jiang Shi does remind me of the MC from "I Can Do It" with his smart mouth, dyed hair and crazy gaming skills - and ICDI is one of my fave esports novels. ML's are also similar - the older, calm captain who likes discretely riling up their love interest. One of my favorite relationship dynamics. This novel does have more smut compared to ICDI - which I love and am always searching for.

I never felt that much tension during the esports competition parts - even at certain scenes. The competition scenes are short and don't immerse you that much compared to the romance. Could be a pro or a con depending on your preference. And though there was angst (not between our couple), it resolves itself fast so it didn't feel stir up that much heartache in me.

Overall, just an enjoyable and lighthearted read! So happy I waited until it was fully translated to read it. <<less

Pros:

Nice completely fluffy read. The ML is actually human, even though he’s 4-5 years older than the MC and is written to be idolised, good looking, taciturn to keep that sense of mystery... etc. we see moments of impulse though not greatly explored due to it being a POV leaning towards MC. Their past is cutely tired together, and their abilities are not overly inflated - against other professional players it’s acknowledge that without your teammates it’s possible to be killed or loose the game.

Cons:

If there’s any issue it would... more>> be lack of depth, such as the coaches should be ex-players but that isn’t mentioned. MC in theory should actually show more trauma responses but although not completely lacking, is missing consistency and details. One of the players on the team basically has no personality and is background... which is lowkey sad, if anything one character of the side couple also kinda has pitiful character development.

Conclusion:

It’s a good resting station between heavy reads like 2HA, MIST, The Demon Lord Only Wants to Follow the Script... etc. <<less
