In her previous life, she treated her mother-in-law like her own mother, treated her husband with respect and affection, devoted herself to her stepson and stepdaughter, and looking back at herself, Guan Suyi had a clear conscience. But in the end, she was ruined, exiled, and died alone. When she was about to die, Guan Suyi summed up her tragedy with one phrase: doing too much and saying too little.

After rebirth, she decided to say nothing, put on the hypocritical face of a good wife and mother, strive for the reputation of a gentle and virtuous character, bury all the enemies in the pit, and ask them to be grateful and remember her as their benefactor for the rest of their lives.

I love this story. This is undoubtedly one of the best historical romance that I've ever read so far. The plot was intriguing and it's full of literature tidbits here and there. Some might find it boring but I actually feel that it's quite interesting to read.

The characters were also quite likeable. The way MC face slapped her opponents with her knowledge was very satisfying. ML was a bit hateful at the beginning because he threw MC into a firepit by marrying her to Zhao Luli but he soon regretted... more>> his action. He regretted his shortsightedness that made him miss such a precious jewel like MC and he also learnt how a marriage could affect woman's happiness and future. He didn't know it before because he deemed it to be unimportant but since he fell in love with MC, he started to see many things that he previously neglected. Fortunately, it wasn't too late for him to repent.

The extra story was also quite interesting. MC was softer and weaker compared to in the main story but she also had her own charm. <<less

Finished reading the third time in June 2024 and I still feel the same about this novel. What a lovely book!

-------

Wow! What a wild ride.

... more>> I binge read this for 2 days coz I can't get enough with every chapter I read. Good thing I started reading this after the whole novel has been translated, otherwise, I'll be quite impatient to wait for the next release. Haha.

After being reborn, the FL has become strong willed and expressive. She was no longer the floor mat that she used to be in the previous life. It was due to her refreshing personality that the ML fell in love with her. And boy he's a blood thirsty man but transforms into a gentle giant in front of the FL.

This is a plot driven novel that involves harem/family intrigue, ethnicity, philosophy and politics.

I wish I could have my very own Hunnar. What a sweetheart.

Thanks to This Seat is Bored for their hardwork in bringing this work to the English reader. Good translation, just need some editing. You'll appreciate the translator's annotation and it'll make you understand the flow better. Cheers~

I love the 25 extra chapters. You'll never know that the FL in the previous life could meet the ML and accept being a concubine. What a satisfying extra story. 😊 <<less

This is a face slapping novel with some solid grounding in Chinese philosophy and history (with only some random small errors) ! The callouts are well deserved, and I like how the characters develop as well as fail to develop. Recommended reading for women who have been bullied, incels should stay away if they want to maintain their sleep quality.

5 stars.

Too convoluted and tedious. With the kind of status she was bestowed and the golden finger of past memories, her revenge shouldn't be so long winded. The title is who cares in the end I think she cared too much. Bah.

But the translation was superb. A job well done.

Luckily I found this story😅 the title is really simple make me don’t want to read it. Also there are some reviews that make me had a second thought. Love both the story and extra because they are together in both lifetime. But there are flaw in some plot because perhaps author forget... no details in some part and also the characters that had been forgotten 🤣

At first I was hesitating if I should continue reading because firstly I didn't like the ml, he wasn't any different than any other simple minded advantage taking person, but suddenly just because he listened the argument of FL in the teahouse he became interested in her and secondly the novel has a heavy historical plot with society rules and all that which makes me kinda bored.... But I'm happy that I didn't stop reading and it just because of guan yi our fl! She's really a memorable FL for... more>> me, beauty with brain and strength! I really like how she can tackle any difficult situation and has a sharp mouth while also capable of keeping calm in danger.. and after more than half of the story I became to like the ml, his character started to grow on me.. there are many characters which I like and also dislike but I really like how author nim wrote her characters... I even liked the antagonist or side characters as I can compare them with real persons who can do petty things for their advantage. It has become one of my favourite novel <<less

It makes me sad that the most liked comments are the ones who hate the MC for... having too many thoughts. And being too intelligent and too good at philosophy and also not being perfect enough.

"She talks too much." Wow, such unique criticism for a female character.

Her feelings and intentions are so easy to understand, as a women she was taught to hold her tongue and bear all hardships with silence. Like so many women are to this day. Being quiet doesn't mean she's s*upid. But in her first life... more>> she learned harshly how holding her tongue to be 'virtuous' only allowed people to step all over her and take advantage of her mercy. She's brimming with ideas and thoughts and bit her tongue to follow the rules of society but it came to nothing. She's had an entire lifetime to think of rebukes and rebuttals but never said them to maintain a facade of peace. But now? Who cares. She already died once in disgrace by being obedient. No more. <<less

8/10 had no expectations for this book but it is surprisingly good, while most contexts like "world view" and "political stuff" is hard to understand I think it is still a very informative book like it teaches you history. Moreover, a strong FL is always a good thing in this kind of novel, very satisfying to see her rebuke others.

This is a must read! Don't walk, run to This Seat Is Bored and be prepared to pull and all-nighter. The FL has a compelling quiet conviction about her that is very attractive. Her character does go through some changes but that's expected when she is free and able to find herself. I didn't mind the ML, if anything I quite like him but he is a very polarising character. I'm on old school Mills & Boon reader and I appreciate that this is fiction so I don't take anything... more>> to heart. The comments section is WILD though. I skimmed through it and mostly stayed away. There was a lot hate strong opinions about the ML and FL but funnily enough those same posters continuesld reading (and commenting) right to the end (as far I could see from my skimming). There's even an alternate ending that explores how the characters would have developed if the og timeline continued but the FL didn't die. Very very interstating. I loved it, it felt darker, more grittier, less romantic and more real. Read this. 9.5/10! <<less

Put off reading this for a while due to some of the comments complaining about the FL’s monologues, which in retrospect I find to be an absolutely amazing critique given that the setting of the story is literally how philosophy shapes law and culture and directly impacts people’s lives. The “monologues” aren’t even that long! I mean I did skim most of them because as it turns out I know nothing about Confucianism or Legalism and the translator probably wasn’t able to completely capture what was being said... but FL... more>> is basically the local tyrant of rhetoric and I love her for it. Absolutely destroying everyone with her mouth only? Totally savage. Love her for it.

Also she really gives the ML a run for his money, though readers who don’t appreciate domineering MLs still might not appreciate him. I found their romance to be genuinely sincere and touching, and overall thoroughly enjoyed the story. <<less

I like the FL, she changed her personality as the situation and her enemies changed. The initial face slapping felt ruthless though it was never disgusting, just right for the situation she was in. She became more determined and proactive as the situation changed and her enemies became cruel.

At first, I actually stopped half way and couldnt get my self to read the rest because I didnt care for the ML, but I am glad I picked it up again because ML was a very decent person, I dont necessarily... more>> love him but he was good to the FL.

Overall good novel <<less

I really liked the FL right from the first chapter. Most especially her devil may care attitude. Most of the characters were actually morally grey which made them interesting even if you might not like them (not the villain’s though. I absolutely abhorred reading about them). However, I would like the novel more if she had gotten married to the emperor right of the bat as planned. Rather than marrying the ex husband and going through everything again (albeit with a different mindset). I still don’t get what the point... more>> of that plot line was. Every single chapter of her married life was just vexing my spirit and the ex was just a pathetic excuse of a man.

I haven’t gone far though but I just keep getting irritated. However, I might pick it up again. <<less

Phenomenal writing. Really good strong female lead who has her head in the right place. Three dimensional characters.

I usually give one star for novels I don’t finish. But when I got halfway, something about the pacing felt dragging which was unfortunate because I lost sleep over the first half. It was that good.

Very well-written story and the translator did an amazing job. I really liked the FL in this story, she really took every situation in stride. She's an intelligent character who didn't take any bull crap from anyone and that includes the ML. We meet the FL during her 1st lifetime and we get a pretty clear picture of the life she had been living. We get to see her awakening to a new life where she is able to make different decisions. If you've read the summary and the tags... more>> then you have a clear idea of what kind of story you'll be reading, if you like these types of stories then you will enjoy this one as well. I didn't care for the ML too much because
Spoiler

he seemed controlling and easily swayed. He married off the FL without asking her or her family just because a guy he wasn't even close to anymore asked him. Then after meeting her changed his mind and decided that he wanted to marry her. And then he involved himself in her marriage making life unnecessarily difficult for her. As if he was saying wouldn't prefer to be with me than with your husband? Her husband was terrible and the only reason she had to endure him and his family is because the ML MARRIED HER OFF TO HIM.

[collapse]

I found the FL husband's daughter to be a very interesting character and I was glad they didn't make her a 1 dimension character. I wish we could have seen more of her and I wouldn't be mad if she got her own story. All in all, I would recommend this. Great read. <<less

Really loved the novel. So happy that many tragedies were able to be reversed.

Also, genuinely hated some characters- really shown why us women and other marginalized groups are still where we are and that is additionally to the hatred and violence from men there are always some women that love to show how much they hate themselves and other women and want to destroy the life and future of others and even themselves, lifting themselves up in a f*cked up system instead of improving life for others and themselves. (The... more>> anti-abortion, etc movement worldwide has many female supporters/leaders.) Truly incomprehensible - how one can think their values/morals are more important than human life; but punching down is a sure way of success...

After all the two women in the Xu family could be so self-important about their limiting and mu*derous beliefs because they were lucky not to be married to terrible husbands.

End of rant 🐈‍⬛ <<less

I loved this. It was so freaking spectacularly awesome. I feel like if I dont use enough adjectives, you won't get how good this book is. It was the best chinese novel I'd read in a while. I can't stand those sappy novels with boring MCs. I loved our FL, she was freaking fantastic. The book was so so good. Wanna say a big thank you to our translator, it was a marvelous job.

It's a great novel, which I definitely enjoyed and liked a lot. The plot is not simple yet very interesting, it's about the foundation of a new dynasty era, it has detailed writing with reasonable motives. Especially about the ancient china's religious philosophies, in regard to confucius and legalism mostly. The characters, just wow, many of them have character development.

The FL was clearly my favorite, even in the later chapters, and the ML second, cheeky scoundrel.

I'll say I took this novel with a grain of salt. Since it has fantasy... more>> genre
Spoiler

for example: reincarnation, internal energy, human masks etc.

[collapse]

Everything besides this grain of salt, and some other things that can be or should be nitpicked by our moral standards, which the biggest nitpick I think the readers have:

Spoiler

is the ML pursuing FL, which I admit he did overstep some boundaries, but he did admit his mistakes and changed in the long period of time /Affair Tag/ It's the first novel I read completely, with this kind of tag, which my expectations for it were low at the start. But surprisingly, it was dealt in a straightforward way and in a good length of chapters, in their relationship as friends at first. Where ML pursues the FL which did not accept, who was in a solitary marriage, only after divorce (...). Let's not forget about FL's ex-husband who was drunk and the one who r**** the FL in the first chapters and the first world/story line FL was.

One more thing I want to say is that there are many things that I can't explain because there are many circumstances (ancient china era, ML emperor, etc.) that author led to it be, in a morally good and fictional way, their relationship to even exist. Which realistically in our time of modern era is a big no, no.

[collapse]

Overall, I do recommend reading this novel, just not the extra chapters, since shortly speaking, they don't relate to their second timeline at all.
Spoiler

In regard to the extra chapters they are a second timeline, which I'll say it straightforwardly, they're just bad content and annoying plus rushed. I don't know what the author was thinking, at least the ML and FL end up together, sigh...

[collapse]

P.S. There are bed scenes, but not detailed.

Goodnight. <<less

3.5 not rounded up bc this would have been 5 stars if there was no romance at all for me. Ok, the MC loves the flawed "shameless" ml. Who cares? I DONT CARE. I don't care about this romance at all. This was top tier badass chick MC novel until I had to accept this f*cking ml.

I dropped bc I was totally feeling nothing for this ml. I feel nothing about this romance. This is not for me. This type of shameless is about ignoring someone's wishes bc you "know"... more>> what they want so you do want u want. I don't like characters like that. This reeks of the ickiness you would feel when you see someone who ended up with their boss, and you're not sure if it was a workplace power issue that got them together. The MC even says it: "you've been manipulating my life." And it's true. This book is just about her (being f*cking smart & protecting her family &) dealing with the ml's controlling actions to her life.

Everything he does.
Spoiler

he wants to give her a marriage she already rejected? Check ok. Trapped her there. He wants to make sure the backhouse isn't peaceful so she doesn't get with her husband? Check send in the abandoned concubine to her door to deal with. He wants her to deal with the immorality and the difficulty of her current married position of hearing he likes her? Check just confess anyways and who cares if she rejected me bc I know she's got feelings for me. He wants to kiss, hug, and harrass her while she's married bc he knows shes not adverse to him even though she still is rejecting him? Check hey her hand here's my c*otch btw kisses. Who cares about what everyone will say about her if she gets with him? He obviously doesn't bc he loves her too much to give a f*ck. When she's mad and still rejecting him? Check. he's like damn she's cute. "Shameless" ML is equivalent to imo disrespectful to the MC. She's not just cute when she's mad homie. She's f*cking mad can you respect that??? No and the MC low-key doesn't care so WHY SHOULD I CARE. I DONTT CARE ANYMORE BC I DNFED. Fck this. But honestly the author is aware of what they are doing so that's good. But it just makes me question why they like this type of ml. Le sigh. I guess people dig the shameless guy stereotype. Not me tho.

[collapse]

I personally don't recommend the romance but the MC's brains are so big.... If you like ancient philosophy and politics, you should try this. Le sigh. <<less

I really love this story! I like how the FL is strong and intelligent I'm not good in narrating nor explaining lol but please give it a try and don't just based your impression of the novel based on just these low star comments and judge it yourself. Btw, for me this is a fluff, light-hearted novel with no very major major misunderstanding.

I liked it but I'm also conflicted. I'd say the novel could be divided into three parts, each one belonging to a different genre. ... more>>
Spoiler

The first one, the MC delves into politics and academic discussions to ensure her scholarly grandfather and father wouldn't be ruined by an opponent who wanted to use them to get fame (Xu minister of previous life), she also makes a place for herself in the Zhao family and even though she's not happy with this bad marriage the imperial edict forced her into, she's able to live decently. Second part, the emperor starts an aggressive pursuit to court her and get her divorced, using some schemes and both gentle and forceful methods. She makes a literary name for herself openly attacking the Xu guy with well written essays. Third part, upset about women's restrictions she decides to act as she wishes instead of caring about the opinion of others and abandons her former principles as she comes to believe getting power is the only way to live well, then she enters the palace as empress and schemes to subdue all the harem.

[collapse]

So, the first part is a stiff, strict lady delving into morality and governance who believes her family's reputation is the most important thing. The second is about dignity and demanding respect in a relationship but now she seems to use her principles and literary talent as a way to subdue the enemy, now she's guided by the idea of having a clear conscious. In the last part, she throws all the principles aside and does anything she can to live well, she values power for self protection.

Now you get it? The genre is undecided as a whole because we have a philosophical, revenge and romance book mixed up here. That leads to contradictions at some points. The MC does admit she's duplicitous and all, but I felt like I was reading about three different women, instead of one woman going through character development.

I liked the romance. The ML was pushy and overbearing at some points but I liked the way MC wasn't afraid to defy him. He was forced to change and respect her because she let him know she woudn't be bullied into marrying him. He learns, don't worry. And even if I was uncomfortable with ML's behaviour sometimes I also admit the MC gave him mixed signals, which she also confesses later. For a guy raised by wolves, he's not bad at all.

I'm just disappointed with the lack of coherency through the book. It gave a lot of importance to principles and morality but it ended up going the common route. I don't blame the MC for being selfish and rebellious at the end, I just think the author hyped up her rightousness and scholarly talent a lot and then it became a farce, just a tool to control others. With her initial character I thought she's enjoy being a teacher or counselor and was interested in her journey to achieve that. I felt like she lost her purpose and determination as the story advanced. At the end, she was just a typical dominant MC "who can't be offended or else...".

I wish I hadn't read the extras, it was an utilitarian romance which made more sense in the harem context but she truly lost all her dignity in this one. I'll leave an excerpt that says it all.

Spoiler

In the final analysis, most of people's relationships tend to be about interests, to get and to give, gains and losses. Unwilling to pay but wanting to earn profit, how could there be such a good thing in the world?

So she gave herself willingly and got a satisfactory result.

[collapse]

I prefer gentle, mutually respectful relationships without power disbalance so I should have stuck with the main plot ending. My respects to the translator who did a great job and took such challenging story. <<less
