In her previous life, she treated her mother-in-law like her own mother, treated her husband with respect and affection, devoted herself to her stepson and stepdaughter, and looking back at herself, Guan Suyi had a clear conscience. But in the end, she was ruined, exiled, and died alone. When she was about to die, Guan Suyi summed up her tragedy with one phrase: doing too much and saying too little.

After rebirth, she decided to say nothing, put on the hypocritical face of a good wife and mother, strive for the reputation of a gentle and virtuous character, bury all the enemies in the pit, and ask them to be grateful and remember her as their benefactor for the rest of their lives.

This is a well written book and the translator did a superb job. It's very difficult to translate the original text. Given the time period and political setting of the story, the author tells a story of a woman reborn. She tries to do the best she can with what she knows from her previous life. This is not a novel that is easy to understand, but if you keep on reading, you will see why this book is so excellent.

To all supporters of strong female characters, this novel is just memorable. In case you wish to learn some historical facts, interesting historical anecdotes are deeply portrayed in the plot. Just give it a go and don't leave behind the extra chapters, they just show a different character development of the main couple.

I enjoyed reading the story. The female lead after reborn did not go about plotting revenge like the typical story stereotype. Instead, she just tries to change things by steering around the situation to save herself and her family.

As for her enemies, she outsmarts them, that they trap themselves in their own schemes to rise to power.

I like how there is a second part in which the s*umbag ex-husband in reborn. You to see if he is willing and/or to write his wrongs towards the female lead. This is something... more>> which is usual and it is the first time I am reading such a story plot. <<less

A mostly solid story. I like that there is a logical sense behind her logical reasoning and extreme knowledge. The story does get a bit messy because they never give us resolution for some of the problems given to the leads, specially some of the political ones. I like the relationship between the leads and the side characters even though some of them mysteriously disappear mid way and are never mentioned again.

The side story is a bit more messy because of the situation the leads are in but again good... more>> example to show how they both uniquely understand each other. <<less

I love them!!!!!!

Even tough I haven't finished reading the novel (currently on ch.166), I couldn't help rating it. From skipping the long paras in the starting chapters to actually enjoying the policy making process with the touch of literacy, I have come a long way.

I did not read the extras but the entire novel is brilliant! It's a lot of faceslapping, but sophisticatedly so. The topics are very interesting--the first 100 chapters were better than the latter half, imo. Unlike other rebirth eye for an eye stories, this one does not make me feel like my IQ dropped. FL is truly amazing, unlike those others who are supposedly genius but only knowing how to do some dirty plot and go to some jail cell and rub it in their face.

For those that who are hesitating to read this, please don't. This novel is a hidden GEM.

FL is smart and sebsible in the her last life (since this is rebirth) and was determined to save her family from going down int he current lifetime.

As for ML, alot of people don't like him, is the sweetest redemption FL for her tragic past life in the current life time. If some of you don't like him its fine but romance and love starts differently in some people and in this case, ... more>> the ML's forceful porsue warms the already cold heart of FL

The only thing I don't like in this novel is that it has a rushed ending and even though it has extras, it did not show their happy ending in the current lifetime but focuses in the another timeline similar to FL's past lifetime but:

Spoiler: It is similar to the past lifetime but it happened before FL was driven out of the Residence. An alternative story in which “What if ML met the weak and obedient Madam (what ML calls FL) and not the stubborn and arrogant FL”.

I was a bit disapointed in that cause I wish it showed what happened after:

Spoiler: The ending was kind of a let down. In the current timeline FL gave birth to two children the eldest being a princess and the youngest being a prince and they personalities are switch. The princess was like the ML who trained to be a female warrior while the prince was like FL who likes to study. And thats it, THE END. We didn't even know what happened to MuMu (Fl's adoptive sob turned to adoptive brother inorder for hin to inherit the families (FL's family) title instead of it falling into thehands of their gready relatives. We didnt even know what happened to Zhao Chunxi (she was one of FL's enemies, also her adoptive daughter) who has the most wonderful character development through out the story

But aside from that I dont ave any more complains for this story, so please read. It will not dissapoint but instead slaos so hard you'll be cheering for FL all the way. <<less

Very good second chance novel. MC, Guan Suyi, rebirths before her marriage and prevents her grandfather from suffering ridicule. This directly changes the fortunes of her family. This event also bring her to the notice of ML, Emperor Huo Shengzhe.

The plot unfolds with multiple schemes and detrimental events against MC. One of them being

Spoiler

ML bestowed MC marriage to Zhao Luli, her previous life husband. Ah, that was a jerk move by ML. It was enjoyable watching him fall in love with MC and then hating his past self over and over again for forcing his love to marry someone else. So refreshing.

BELOW IS A BIG SPOILER BUT I COULDN'T IMBED THE SPOILER.

.

...

ML bestowed the marriage because he felt he owed Zhao Luli for taking his first wife, Ye Zhen, as his concubine. However, ML was tricked by Ye Zhen into becoming his concubine. ML didn't love her and never consummated their marriage.

[collapse]

The main story plot and stuff was entertaining. As for the extra chapters, I felt they degraded the FL. It was an alternate universe version where the FL was portrayed as weak. It was like eating a slice of yummy cake (main story) and then finishing up with burnt toast (extras). I would've preferred to not have read the extras.

NOTE TO SELF: Favorite event starts on Chapter 19. <<less

Actually, the story was quite interesting and I ended up binge-reading the whole chapters (yes, fortunately, the novel has been translated completely).

For the first time, I encountered a long-winded MC and ML lol. MC is truly a good teacher hence speak and explain thing clearly and orderly.

While the ML also talks and communicates nicely. He has a straightforward personality. (Finally, not a cold and cool temperament, not typical who says little).

Overall, the story is unique and worth reading. And I agree with some points of fellow reviewers here, such as... more>> the ending being wrapped up too fast.

The only thing that perhaps I missed:

Spoiler

The 1st husband's second brother. Did he come back or not? Or I just missed reading his part?

I enjoyed this novel because I enjoy philosophy and there was a lot of discussion about the nature of man and the differences between laws that favor the elite vs those that favor society, which is very topical right now

The translator did a great job

I feel like I read it before in some chinese website, im almost sure so I stopped at chapter 97.

Just want to say that I like MC (FL) so much. Even when things repeated at the start (getting married to the same man) she stayed calm and chose to look for a different path with the little options she got.

That confucian dude was so annoying, fortunately she was able to stop him from the start.

Also, her revenge was not cruel, she just decided to ignore them, later the kids repent... more>> and she kinda let go.

Mmm yeah, won't say anything else, I forgot hahah, give it a chance bc it's really entertaining. <<less

First of all, thank you translator for your such a good translation, and even explaining terms on the novel.

Its really a joy when finding a novel that can entertain. The FL was rebirth, and decided to live according to her will. The title itself, who cares -, doesn't fit the story, because FL is indeed cares to much, especially towards her family, thats why this time she was keeping an eye for one that destroy the reputation of her grandfather and father.

FL's battles of literature is satisfying, the angst and... more>> thrill is well put inside the plot.

Now, about the romance. When reading this novel, countlessly I'm asking myself, do I want FL end up with ML or not. While I can sympathize with ML's past, I find his courtship towards FL is a little bit unethical. But it also one of the charm, because this ML is full of flaw but in the same time can be so charming.

The other character also served its purpose and leave impression. The extras story is nice read as well. <<less

This story has the best FL of all times. At first when the FL got reborn she didn't immediately change to become a vicious and vindictive FL.

and usually in a lot of story we will have FL who is mary sue and all knowing, using all the future knowledges to their advantage. And reading so much about that kind of plot make it boring to me.

So I love how MC works hard to make changes and is a strong, intelligent, and independent woman

What I appreciate and love more about this... more>> book is the unusual way that FL and ML not immediately fall at first sight and chase and devote to each other immediately. No they have to face challenges first to become together <<less

Definitely a 10/5 Josei amongst josei.

First of all, tackling the main criticism of most negative pointers, mainly the ML:

He's someone who makes mistakes, but the important factor is that he learns from them and does not repeat them.

... more>> He will crack his skull open trying to gain MC's affection but if she admonishes him, he'd go back and seriously reflect on it.

Compared to the many many MLs out there, which one isn't completely shrouded in protagonist halo and guarded by the author even if they do hypocritical things? (Like stowing FLs like items at home not to be shown on the outside, diminishing their worth as human beings by criticizing their dress code and entire human being is for their own to see and enjoy, etc. Subtly mostly ofc but the chauvinism is prevalent, particularly in the overbearing CEO genre)

ML is always eager to learn, better himself, and treasure what he has despite the grim life he led.

Most importantly, I love how there's no immediate fate-like attraction forming between the main protagonists, it's too pretentious
Spoiler

I'm glad he didn't fall in love with her at first glance and wanted her no matter what just because of a couple of sentences she used to rebuke someone. Only after hearing her true thoughts he gradually became more and more attracted to her and then, later on, to her looks (she was wearing a veil during most of their early encounters).

[collapse]
ML is unbiased until he learns of her personality and becomes fond of her.

To say he's forcing MC to submit to him is a far cry
Spoiler

MC is leading him on, consciously or subconsciously. She openly admits to this, later on, confessing to her duplicity, and explaining how she wants him to hold onto her. She needs sincerity and perseverance, no wonder, considering her first and 2nd life both having to tango around with the s*upid and cowardly 2nd ML (ex-husband, Marquis Zhao).

If she wasn't leading him on, she wouldn't turn back after rejecting him to ignite a small flame of hope nor sending back her replies of 'rejection' to the love letters but never ignored them.

There's no way of measuring the expiration date on someone's feelings so she's very very very carefully, testing out the waters.

[collapse]

The title of the novel who cares isn't addressing MC's attention and focus on others but the moral upbringing and changes of ethics at the time. It's about MC finding herself.

The face slapping is refreshingly open. I adore how she's not relying on past memories to suppress others but on her own learning and knowledge. The regression (I'd hate to call it a rebirth since she just went back in time) hardly matters except for saving a few of her close relatives from a miserable fate.

She has her own flaws and she can openly admit them.

It's not a streamlined change that came with her regression but a gradual one with the help of self-reflection and some others.

Her and ML's line of communication has always been very stable and clear. Even if there are misunderstandings, both will confront them immediately and directly.

The antagonists don't fall short in the limelight of the protagonists. They are smart, have wit, don't blindly stumble forward to trip others, and have to be carefully guarded against, some openly some secretively.
Spoiler

Their endings are not stereotypical either, some attaining redemption though having to live with their own causes and effects. It's a far better outcome than the usual route of killing troubles and removing the thorn (in the eyes of readers and protagonists).

[collapse]

The only complaints I have is about MC's mother and the fate of
Spoiler

General Zhao (the younger brother of Marquis Zhao, her brother-in-law) 's wife and son. The poor lady got cannon foddered so hard to lift up ML's birth arc. With how the deeply emotional scene was developed, I thought MC would have had some more lingering feelings for baby Huai'en but she threw him to the back of her mind a bit too quickly.

Understandably as someone leaving the Zhao's, she has no right to interfere with her soon-to-be ex-brother-in-law's child but seeing one of the antagonist stooping low enough to drug a baby of 3months old to fake false attachments to her just to get a minor emotional stab out of MC and get away with it is quite revolting. Like MC had speculated, it makes sense that the antagonist wouldn't kill the child but it's 100% sure that he'd be absolutely ruined (character-wise) by her. I know it's just a very minor side character but argh my maternal instincts!!!!

[collapse]
The mom annoyed me to no end. For such a strong-willed and smart family, she's the sole rotten pillar.

She fills her daughter's brain day in and out with the boudoir women's proper conduct nonsense.
Spoiler

She lost her 2nd child because of her clansmen and still served them like a maid until she almost lost her daughter as well. Oh, wow, it takes two severe lessons for her to wake the F up. That's not all, after her daughter's divorce and awful first marriage, without learning from ANYTHING, she's ready to shove her into another pit. MC voiced that thought and wanted some understanding from her mother wishing not to remarry, but this dear good mom says yes on the front and goes behind her back to arrange a marriage. If it wasn't for the strict and ridiculous list of rules the 2nd prospective in-law sent them, she wouldn't have been any wiser.

Let's not talk about how wussy and useless this mom is on other occasions. Sees trouble, and immediately faints. Sees a conflict and immediately tucks herself in. Gosh, such an awful and terrible influence. More than the Xu-Neo-Confucianism that was oppressing the women of the upper classes, I blame the mother for MC's self-restrictions.

[collapse]

PS: The translation was great, there are a few grammatical errors and typos but in no way does it interfere with the reading experience.

The philosophical blabbering sometimes makes sense, and sometimes doesn't, but it never gets in the way of letting you understand the overall picture. <<less

Its a great story. Expected for something light because of the title but its actually a wholesome novel with quite a plot and storyline.

The translator really tried their best as the setting was elaborate and full of long text book like paragraph (which I always gladly skip). It was hardwork and thank you so much because of u I can read this novel.

What I like : the wholesome and mature storytelling. Been some time since I read books like this. The great FL and ML. I like their wits and... more>> banter. They make a great couple deserving for each other.

What I dislike : The pro-longed period of ML wooing the FL. Too much refusal. Its tiring to read. At first I thought they will never be a couple. Once they did, I became annoyed enough to stop. But thats just my preference.

I decided to stop here before more drama gets into the story. Its about to reach harem n empress dowager thingies. Will continue in the future, maybe..

Also saying thank u to the author!

Overall I would recommend this book. The first half I read is wonderful. <<less

The story and plot is good, abit cliche and alot of face slapping. I like these reborn genre so I am ok with it. But I do like the alternate timeline more than the main story though. I am not good with history and there’s alots I means alots of historical, or even laws, and Confucius teachings, which kinda boring for me, but if you are culture buff it is a very good information there. The wrap up ending is ok, even some event a bit vague. Good read. Tq

SUMMARY: After suffering through many indignations as the second wife of the Marquis of Zhengbei mansion, the FL was chased out of the manor and forced to live in seclusion. Prior to this, she had worked hard to raised the children of the first wife, had been a virtuous legitimate wife, and had done everything to please his husband and mother-in-law. However, rather than appreciate her efforts, they schemed against her and left her without even her dignity.

Now that she's got a second chance at life, the first thing... more>> she does is prop up her paternal family and avoid the subject of marriage. The first goal works out well, but as for the second, she still ended up getting married to the Marquis of Zhengbei in the end -- all because of the will of the new Emperor (who, by the way, is the ML of this novel lolol.)

FIRST IMPRESSION? This is the second time I tried to read this novel. The first time I read it, I didn't make it pst the 2nd chapter, and my main comment was: "lots of filler content in the form info-dumps.... I thought this novel would be your typical revenge plot after being reborn, but the FL is portrayed as largely indifferent and lacking desires. The second chapter was also rather boring with all the filler." XD I agree with my initial impression, this novel is a bit boring if you take into account all the illegible history content. (The translation is edited MTL, and while it's a lot better than straight up MTL, when it comes to the philosophical lecturing of the FL, the content that must have already been really difficult to understand became even more difficult to understand *cryingface*.)

THOUGHTS? Okay, but initial impression aside, this novel isn't bad. It does follow the typical revenge, face-slapping plot, like I had initially expected. It's just that the slow-pacing and the setting make things a lot more complex. I can't be for certain, but this novel was set after there had been much upheaval in the ruling class. The current Emperor was a rebel who had very recently overturned the previous monarch and took over the throne, as such, the times were unstable. Being in such a time, the already complex matters of the inner and outer courts are all the more complicated. Nevermind the ridiculous situation in the Marquis' manor that the FL ended up in.

Let me just say, this is not a bad thing. I think that the historical setting is pretty well done. And, if the lectures of the FL were a little more comprehensible, I would have probably enjoyed that too. It's just that I wasn't completely pulled in by the FL and ML. So, after a while, I got tired of it.

Rating: 3.45/5

In terms of content, this novel is a bit hard to read (in more ways than one). It's long-winded and the romance is unconventional (I mean, from the start, she still gets married to her ex-husband, and was even bestowed a marriage to him by the true ML lol). However, if you enjoy history, and you're curious about what Ancient China was like during that time, this is not a bad choice. At least, the POV is close enough that you can still watch a good show of face-slapping in the midst of all the philosophy and history (so it's not completely dull lol). My overall impression of the novel is mixed. I don't think it's bad, but I'm not sure if it's good either. At least, for sure, it doesn't seem to be my kind of novel. <<less
