This is a short novel with just 28 chapters and an Epilogue, but don’t let its length fool you; as it delivers a profoundly painful and heartbreaking experience. Please read with tissues on hand! The plot follows a tragic love story that will leave you bawling, as the characters navigate immense suffering and sacrifice.

While the emotional weight is undeniable, the pacing a little questionable, the novel does have some plot holes that could distract you from the overall impact, especially if you are the one to read plot heavy novels!... more>> Despite these flaws, I found myself unable to stop crying, completely immersed in the raw emotions of the narrative. If you're prepared for a gut-wrenching journey, this book is worth the read. 🥲 <<less

I think there was more in this story, it should have been longer with more plot but still I loved it.

Spoiler

Though I liked that it was not another 'the emperor falls in love with his concubine and they have a good time together' story, I found it realistic that the concubine only endured the emperor's approach but the end still hurts my heart.

[collapse]

I know, I read a tragedy but I expected a bit more. That's why I couldn't give five stars but in my opinion it is also a very good review if the reader desire for more detials and more act, because that means the story itself is well written. <<less

The story is good, but their personalities are rather... shallow.

Spoiler

I liked the first part of the story until the... s*x scene. I know the MC used that to get closer to the ML, but there are other ways to get closer than doing... that. It was a bit uncomfortable to read.

And the ending was a bit rushed. Like the cat dying so suddenly to add to the MC's misery, sending Xiao Bao far away—when he could've been the MC's personal attendant? —And the empress's involvement felt like a plot device.

It's ridiculous how the ML quickly fell in love with the MC, even abandoning his duties to visit. Everyday. How did the other concubines not hear about this? They could have been other antagonists, but only the empress and the Little Prince interfered.

And the side characters, Jue Yu and Qi Sheng, their romance was like random inserts from nowhere. It's like the author added it because they wanted to. I'm not meaning to offend.

[collapse]

The story is cute with the MC, his cat, Xiao Bei and the Little Prince. Until the ML ruined it. Anyway, the epilogue is alright, although I feel that the MC deserved better. <<less

I will give 4.1

That is because this is written extremely well and the MC is one that is easily lovable. From the first 9 chapters his personality is electric and I cared and loved him so much.

I would give this a much higher score but it's just rushed. It's not really a tragedy in my eyes, just like an open ending (what I will believe).

... more>> There are a lot of major dead ends which haven't been written about and stuff that needs more explanation.

Overall I don't know if I would recommend this because I just fell in love with this character that has been left in limbo. Anyways I'm glad I read it, the angst was good.

Btw the ending left me wondering so I came up with my own events that happens after.

Warning I got carried away so it's long 🤡

Spoiler

I think MC actually loved ML and doesn't blame him but closed of his heart after ch13 because he was too scared to loose it. He knew already that things don't last so I think he wanted to get it over with and lessen the pain of goodbyes.

Here's what happens after (in my head, cont from last chapter)

It had only been one year and in Wen Mu Yans mind he has reached his final state, no changes no uncertainties anymore, nothing to loose or worry about, all defeated with life. But the emperor still loved him dearly, watching him from a distance, happy that his body is recovering. In his mind the emperor knew he will start to make him happy again, he just needed time for him to heal.

The emperor starts to bring in some cats to keep him company, as they just so happen to enter the villa, more servants who are friendly join the court as they needed employment, and he accepts them. The lonely solitary life Wen Mu Yan lived for a year slowly begins to change again.

During this year the emperor secretly punishes the lady dowager, firing all her staff and placing her under house arrest. He made sure no one can hurt him again, threatening her eyes if she did anything again to Mu Yan or hus brother. The emperor fixes up his government and military, re evaluating his men's loyalty and enstilling better dissipline to the rules.

In the villa

Rui Ze will sometimes come visit him, Wen Mu Yan sometimes hears his voice start to break and he could tell by their parting hugs he is getting taller. Rarely the emperor will accompany the prince on his visits, announcing himself but keeping a distance, although he was actually there every day. Weekend long visits were not uncommon during celebrations, and they will in the summer stay for a week to train.

Later on Wen Mu Yan visits the lotus camp as he misses Xiao Bao. They reunite and he lowly regains his previous joy in life, he no longer thinks about those desperate times as he wants to be happy and live his life.

Wen Mu Yan and the emperor eventually get talking again, sipping tea and sharing whatever delicacies he brought from the market with the emperor. One day just in conversation he says he misses the livelihood of the palace and that this place is too quiet.

At this time the Dowager dies. Older Xiao Bao will move back because he misses Mu Yan (sneaked on carriage) . He gains his confidence to love the emperor again, moved by his patients and dedication (he figured out the emperor was watching him through their chats and his slip ups).

Through the little gestures and visits he finally realises the emperor's feeling are true. And after another year he figures out that he is still in the palace, but again he's not concerned with this anymore as he knows from experience he can leave whenever he wants (ie unrealistic of him to live away, with no job/backing anyways).

He moves back into the servents house in the palace with xiao bao and the now many cats. He wants to be there for the little prince as he grows up. Xiao bao and the Rui Ze are older now and they have sworn to never leave his side. Maybe because they are older and stronger now he believes them, no longer feeling like a burden.

At some point the emperor announces is brother as the next heir, and he is allowed to marry whoever he wants.

They get married, Then they will live happily ever after, just like the beginning 🥹.

I read this in a few hours because it's a really short story, but nonetheless it made me cry quite abit of tears. Gave this a 5.0 but tbh I wanted to say its a 4.5. Here's my review:

mc: delicate, gentle and kind-hearted. Everything bad that fell upon him was never his fault nor intention, and he got all this undeserving suffering from it (even after years have gone by) and I feel so sorry for him. Imagine having to live with this pain for the rest of your life... more>> knowing it would never be justified.

ml: he is quite literally one of the worst piece of cow poop to exist in historical danmeis. His personality is just detestable, and none of his actions were even remotely acceptable. What he did to the MC years ago,
Spoiler

not even remebering that a child was wrongfully blinded, and to think it was because the MC caught the ML colluding with the empress dowager. How could he not even recall such an incident when he did someone so wrongly last time?

[collapse]
and he still wants to hold onto the MC after everything, refusing to leave him. Do you not have a conscience or something?

I didn't like the ending, in the sense that the MC never got what he wanted (which was freedom) and the ML would rather trap him forever all alone than to let the MC go and be happy, finally free from the clutches and bad memories the palace and people have given him. This twisted affection he had for the MC came too late, and if he even had half a decency in himself, he wouldn't have treated the MC this way.

overall, if you're in the mood for some sad, angsty novel that's a quick read; this is for you! <<less

I give it 5, but I don't dare to read it again.

This book goes heavily into emotions.

This is 1 time read book that I recomend everyone to read.

Why, because it's beautiful.

That simple. I've read this novel a long time ago and still remember it as if it was yesterday.

Congratulations Author,

You have created something amazing that will stay in my memory forever. Not as a good memory, but worth remembering.

I would rather call this a tragic life story of a blind concubine who finally gained a bit of solace at the end of the tale. But that was also thanks to the fact he is blind or else in reality he never got what he actually wished for except

Spoiler

his wish to send Xiao Bao faraway away from the palace

As for romance I feel it's been one sided since moment "his" identity was revealed and it'd be that way forever though in the end he might have forgiven and accepted "him" judging from the hint given in first chapter.

Anyhow, I could never forgive the ML (I mentally slapped him a thousand times -_-), not for what he did to him in past but how he acted after things were revealed later. He could have at least let him go....

I loved the side cp, specially Jue Yu, those two were adorable.

Short and heart wrenching story but a good read, no regrets. <<less

A TRAGIC AND SAD LOVE STORY. It reminds me of a bedtime story or a tale that you would hear growing up and you'd become sad and hope that it never happens to you. I love this story so much, it's short, it's easy to read and understand and it's just written really well. The ending kinda parallels to the beginning and I love that because this time it's like "Wow it's the same but this time we're full of memories" so when you read it all you feel is... more>> bittersweet at the nostalgia of it all. I highly recommend and it's okay if you don't cry, to be honest I didn't cry either but it is still a very sad tale. <<less

Such a good story even though its a tragedy I thought they were gonna end up together instead they both ended up alone😭. One thing I'm confused about is what happened to the Wen family?

I was not expecting the emperor to be responsible for all of Wen Mu Yan's suffering😭

I did not expect the ending, every time the CP will be coaxed by ML very easily which will fix me however in this one our CP was greatly hurt by ML hence was not coaxed as easily but there was one note I don't think anyone noticed

Spoiler alert

This is the first meeting between the blind concubine and that man.

... more>> Afterwards, a very long time afterwards, when the blind concubine reminisces upon these memories, he will ask: "Why did you lie to me and say you were a guard?"

The man teasingly says: "Because you looked easy to trick."

The blind concubine will say indignantly: "I do not!"

The man raises his eyebrows in disbelief, opens his mouth, thinks for a moment, but then swallows the words that he was originally saying, "Oh alright, I concede."

Like their first meeting, the man's soft gaze concentrates on his lover. Never has it wavered in the slightest despite the endless passing of time. Regardless, regardless of the fact that he knows the blind concubine will never be able to see it.

This note in the first. Chapter when the author wrote it, I said to myself why she would spoil the ending by mentioning that both of them would end together, but then when I read the ending I understood. They will end up together maybe after sometime, we have to remember the ML is the emporer and nothing would stop him, so maybe it would take them many years to get together but I think with the help of the younger brother and Xio Bai after say 5-7 years of separation they will end up together after all time heals the wound and the blind concubine yearns always to belong somewhere and have company. I thank the author and the translator for their great efforts <<less

I seriously enjoyed the book. It started so sweet and cute but it eventually got darker and the mystery behind the MC made this whole story even more interesting, even though it was a tiny bit predictable.

Spoiler

Tbh the only thing I didn't like was the ending, because even though it was poetic and all that stuff, I feel like it was too unfair for the MC. He went through so much and in the end he still ended up with nothing.

I didn't like the ML ever since the two of them had s*x. He kept telling MC he cared about him and loved him, yet he still hurt him so badly, the MC kept bleeding even the next day. Someone who loves you wouldn't stop regarding your feelings once their pee stick is out.

I didn't feel bad how in the end he still didn't manage to get MC's forgiveness because he didn't deserve it and even the way he apologized didn't sound too sincere to me. He simply wanted things to go his way, no matter what, so the fact that he didn't get MC in the end pleases me.

But I feel like after all that pain and suffering for nothing, the MC should have at least had a happy ending. His attendant was driven away, his cat dead, no one by his side but quiteness and loneliness. It's clear that he is depressed and suicidal and in this kind of environment I doubt he will live long... The least the ML should have done for him was to send him back home to his family or to let him leave with the general and his attendant, not to let him be alone and depressed in a pretty "cell" that he can't even see.

Overall it was nice... But the author really likes to ab*se their readers. <<less

I really enjoyed this novel... I think the blind concubine's story is very human, and the narrative style is very good in hiding the 'past' and whatever he felt during the whole time things were happening.

It's also very melancholic, but for me it fit with everything that made the character become what he did.

I really dislike the Emperor LOL I wasn't expecting anything about the main couple - I didn't even notice the 'unrequited' tag before - so I feel like the ending was okay and I wasn't sad about... more>> it.

I remember just last year reading this and here I am looking at the cover and remembering everything, every moment & every detail.... the author totally made me fall in love with the couple... beautiful and kind hearted lovers. I still cry remembering this and I will never reread it because it still hurts (cries*) from beginning to end he still ends up being alone but sometimes we need to forgive and love and leave the hard past behind.... to... more>> me it wasn't the emperor he loved, it wasn't the guard that disguised himself he loved, it was Rui Xuan a Normal gentle, kind hearted man that visited him just because he wanted to. This was an interesting short story, not that much politics but showing a healthy (traumatized) wariness of it, with beautiful relationships around the MC.

While the MC is not the most calculating character, he's super lovable and catches onto lies quickly, despite wishing to trust in what people say.

I am disappointed by the ending though... it was beautiful, concise, cutting, and disappointing'...

tbh I would have been very happy if MC got to leave the palace and live happily with the general, the dr, and Xiao Bao, , , I'm so disappointed in the emperor's selfishness. Greedy and self concerned— not only is Jue Yu and General Qi more than enough to protect him, Jue Yu is a great dr and Xiao Bao loves him and takes care of him, they would have surely kept him safe and healthy. Look at him still wishing to see Xiao Bao!!!! That's not cute!!! That's catastrophic!

I liked the ending. I see there's a lot of debate about it but this is a very good novel.

It's very realistic how xnn found comfort on his cat yuli and xiao bao, they were his light, of course he'd pour all his hope and dreams on them. I wish they'd have stayed like that.

At first I thought the emperor was very adorable with the way he treated xnn, but when they had s*x, I started to sense his "love" as a mere obsession, he started showing his possessive and... more>> demanding self, which is a red flag

Spoiler

I felt so hard when yuli saved muyan and rui ze, she and xiao bao were truly the best thing ever, I would have loved if they could be together forever, it's so sad that xiao bao and muyan couldn't even say goodbye to each other

Then general qi and rue yu uwu, I'm so glad they got a happy ending at least, they're so adorable

I am happy with the ending bc there's no way muyan could just forget that rui xuan was the cause of his blindness, they weren't meant to be together, and they could be happy at last only bc muyan was blind and couldn't see that rui xuan was watching him from afar every day ;;-;;

I really like the pacing of the story, it fits the short 29 chapter window. However at some parts I really really don’t know what’s going on? There’s a lot of misunderstandings, a lot.

Spoiler

eg why was Wen Muyan so insistent on hating the emperor? Isn’t it the empress who wants to kill him? Why didn’t he tell the emperor after knowing him and having such a steamy night that the empress was the one who blinded him etc?

I could understand when he said that he didn’t trust the emperor would love him forever that kinda thing so he doesn’t want? To tell him?

[collapse]

anyhows, this story tackles some really deep and mature stuffs.

Spoiler

the ending showcases what Wen Muyan wants number 1 and what he wants number 2 and the conflict in this selection because he knows he cannot have both. In the end, he chose the easier, more carefree path. Regrets? I don’t know.

I personally love tragedies (i know. Gotta get those tears) and this one left me utterly upset. The MC had suffered so much till the point he broke down completely. It didn't matter how much the ML tried to fix everything- the damage had been done. But it was the ending that really made this story a true tragedy.

Spoiler

The ML's promise to the MC to let him be free was a lie. The MC asked to leave the palace and the ML finally caved after seeing how shattered the MC was staying in the palace. But instead of actually letting him go far away from the palace, like he wanted, the ML tricked the MC into believing he was on a carriage far away when in reality, he was still on palace grounds. In the end, the MC is lonely with no one, but he believes that he is far away and finally free. In actuality, the ML still watches him from afar as the MC has never actually left the palace.
