Lovely piece of tragedy. Short, sweet, and a bitter ending. The only thing preventing it from full 5 stars are a few inconsistencies that probably could've been wrapped up for explained better.

Spoiler

Like why blind him instead of muting him? That seems to be the more logical response to silencing a witness if you absolutely had to avoid killing him for some reason. But of course that would've negated the whole story.

Originally I was about to rate this a 4/5, but the ending made me change my mind.

At the start this is a pretty predictable, but amazing story. I was sad that many of the plot parts were so short. For example, we never even meet the empress. There are so many parts to this story which could've been expanded on, but other then that everything was good. The ending is what just made me fall in love whit this story.

It only took me a day to read trough this and... more>> I really recomend it! <<less

The translation was done quite well and I was pretty surprised by the number of twists that the story had. Take the tragedy tag seriously.

I'm not a huge fan of the story. I felt that some things didn't really make sense (some of the foreshadowing in the beginning didn't match the ending, though the translator does a good job of trying to tie it together). It felt like the author started the story intending it to be a fun fluffy one and decided halfway through she wanted a dramatic tragedy... more>> instead.

Spoiler

Also, I find it a bit unbelievable that the emporer doesn't remember the kid he demanded be blinded. How did it come as a surprise to him that he'd be hated by the person he blinded?

The irony of this story, it utterly was beautiful.

Spoiler

I wouldn't categorize this as romance though, it was more like one sided pinning on a person who even if he wanted to love, it wouldn't be impossible. I mean how do you expect the person you blinded to love you?

The MC hurts me, that sort of pain, deep down in your heart, the feeling of your own heart getting stabbed and twisted. That's the feel.

Spoiler

The way Mu Yan kept hurting himself and trying to help Xiao Bao hurt me, the whole story hurts me.

I confess, I don't ship the ML with the MC. The blind concubine deserves better. <<less

When I read it somewhere I didn't know it is tragic. I gave 4 stars cause I hate tragic story but I honestly like the MC and side characters. I just don't like how it ended. I just feel that the MC deserves better.

A very bittersweet/angsty story about the emperor stumbling on a mysteriously blind concubine who has been forgotten by everyone in the palace. Both people have their secrets and hidden pasts. The translation and writing flowed very well, and the imagery was very vivid. Despite the lack of originality in the plot of the story, it was still an engrossing and emotional read.

Spoiler

I wasn't a big fan of the emperor for the majority of the story because he was exceedingly self-centered/spoiled and didn't take care of the MC unless it suited him. But taking into account his status as the emperor (in terms of his spoiled selfishness), he did bring a genuine heart towards the MC which redeemed him a little by the end.

[collapse]

As for the ending...

Spoiler

Although the main story fades out before a true 'happy ending/reconciliation, ' the author hints at the main relationship's eventual affection with dialogue in an earlier chapter, which is good enough for me.

Ah ;w; the feels. The story itself is very good, the plot flows nicely, just that for those with a sensitive heart, I'd advise you to read this in the safety of your room, or don't read it at all. It's neither HE nor BE, a neutral end. Takes on a realistic view, and just, basically I made the mistake of reading this in class and I had to hide in the bathroom to cry it out. Tragic beauty.

Warning: This story is a tragedy with a sad ending.

But I like tragedies sometimes so... If you also like tragedies, this made me cry a little. Like, not heartwrenching sobbing or anything, but it was pretty sad.

It's also pretty short, but I feel like it would have started dragging if it was any longer. So the author ended it at the right time. <<less

A fairly good story. The last several chapters made me bawl and left me with a bitter taste in my mouth, but I didn't feel dissatisfied with the ending. Of course, I wished for a happy ending where everyone is alive, together, and happy, but everyone in this case had done too much to be happy together. I actually think the author did a bang up job of making this realistic; the bad guys aren't always punished, the evil deeds aren't always forgiven/forgotten, and getting your wish doesn't necessarily make... more>> you happy. Yes, it makes you bitter and sad, but a happy ending isn't always good, and a good ending isn't always happy.

From the MC, I'm strongly reminded that you can't go back to the past. Whether it's the him before being blinded, or the him in the cold palace, they're not the person he is at the end of the novel. We can see that clearly in the ending scene:

Spoiler

He's watching the scenes go by on his divan as he once did while the emperor is watching him as he once did, but neither of them can regain that happiness they once had. The emperor now knows his sins can never be forgiven and his love will never be requited, while Mu Yan feels completely alone. I wonder if he ever felt he wouldn't have been happier staying in the palace where he could see Rui Zui, even if he had to tolerate the emperor, though he certainly doesn't regret his decision.

A beautiful story, one that makes you unable to stop once you start. It pulls at your heart strings and wraps you up in the emotions and ordeals of the characters as each chapter reveals more of the painful past. In the end, both characters got what each of them wanted, but were they actually happy?

This was a story about loneliness and really hit home for me.

The novel is really good.. I love it and also hate, because it makes me cry so hard!.... To be honest I didn't notice the tragedy genre. If I did, maybe I didn't read this... Which is going to become a big lost to me... So I'm thankful that I didn't notice it...

I'm a person loves to read happy ending story... But reading this is not also a bad choice... Because like other novels, this novel makes me smile and experience the feeling of being in love... And makes me realized the reality... Not all love story have a happy ending... But it doesn't mean that because we have a sad ending, we should stop loving the person we loved or stop to love...

OMG!! My tears are not enough to fill the sea!! If u wish for heart break then go ahead and read!! Know the true meaning of tragedy! Although not on the level of Cold Sands, my heart still bleeds oceans!! The happiness was so fleeting and the end was so bitter!! The story ended well roundedly and tied up a lot of ends, the pace was even and the story was enjoyable to find out what happens next BUT AT WHAT COST!?

*cough*..... yeah, well solid 5/5 a bit confusing around... more>> the middle with the sudden plot turn but all in all pretty enjoyable ^^ <<less

This novel is very good, its just that the ending is ;-;. This novel made me cry. The MC bears all the suffering and just bottled it all up never saying anything even if he got hurt in the process. He is smart but kind of s*upid at the same time.

Spoiler

What frustrate me the most is that they never got together.

Aaaaaah man, what a roller coaster. But it is pretty realistic. The ending itself was just a slice of life, not one of those fantasy fairy tales. That's why most people are dissatisfied. I thought the would be a cliche but it was made with the reality of life in mind. You really don't know what to suspect. I wonder about

The whole story is understandably ended up in tragedy. I like the little details that the author puts here and there (the description of the settings or some nostalgic memory related to certain character) which welly coraborates with the whole events. The characteristic of the Blind Concubine is also quite interesting. A blind man who seems to be so pure and simple, yet deeply miserable and lonely. The caring emperor who seems to be a sincere helper has his own dark secret. The twisted relationship between the Blind Concubine and... more>> the emperor is well written.

It's a convincingly heart-wrenching tragic, yet a beautiful story. <<less

Gave 5 stars because this book definitely didn’t deserve the 1.7 rating it had when I saw it. Though normally I’ll probably give it 3/4.

Character development and plot building needs more work, but it is a perfect tale of tragedy.
Spoiler

The novel presents a desperate situation that did not get resolved till the end, a really sad circumstances that all the characters has to stick till the end and may make readers feel unsatisfied.

Probably the first BL I ever read. It starts quietly, with a blind concubine forgotten in the cold palace—until the emperor unknowingly pulls him into a world of unexpected romance. But the good days don’t last and the story turns darker. It’s not a typical romance; it’s a story that cuts deep, making you feel for these flawed, fragile characters. It’s woven from pure emotion and raw pain. The ending still haunts me after all these years.

Christ this is sad

"Sometimes Xiao Bao leaves and Yu Li isn't here. It

gets very quiet and there's no wind. So I wonder whether I'm still alive or if I've

... more>> already died."

Ultimately the author got tired of writing it, and just decided to have a quick ending. I mean it's fine but It's not going to feel good and honestly this is probably what would happen in IRL. Emperors would never allow their lovers to just leave, it's against the rules, tradition, and who knows what kind of secret their lovers know. Plus Emperors are selfish, they don't actually love, they possess objects and people. They rather hold them prisoner in a golden cage like a song bird than let them go free. If this happened IRL in history, I think the emperor would have either:

  1. Execute
  2. Banish
  3. Lock them away in a golden cage.
Look I get it, I written stories too, and usually I don't know how to end it. I get inspiration of an idea, go through 6-12 chapters and then that was the end of the inspirations. LOL And I get stuck with an abrupt ending. <<less
