The irony of this story, it utterly was beautiful.

I wouldn't categorize this as romance though, it was more like one sided pinning on a person who even if he wanted to love, it wouldn't be impossible. I mean how do you expect the person you blinded to love you?

The MC hurts me, that sort of pain, deep down in your heart, the feeling of your own heart getting stabbed and twisted. That's the feel.

Spoiler

The way Mu Yan kept hurting himself and trying to help Xiao Bao hurt me, the whole story hurts me.

I confess, I don't ship the ML with the MC. The blind concubine deserves better. <<less

story was ok I only kept reading bc I wanted to find out the reason for mc's blindness. The "romance" between the main couple was lacking tbh. I was more interested in the general and teacher's relationship. (Lowkey want a spinoff about those two but oh well)

It was a very nice story but the ending felt forced. I understand that the author had this end in mind (probably from the beginning) but the characters' interactions lacked logic in the end.

For example, why would the empress be so dumb to give to the little prince poisened cake when, if the prince died, it was very easy for her to be discovered. And why not a strong one if she just wanted to kill whoever. And the cat was never really portrayed as so impatient towards the food in wen mu yan's hand. Why would she grab it and eat it? It was even mentioned that she was being calm at that point.

*indirect spoilers*

The author has done a decent job on sticking to his (her?) vision. The problem is, this vision can fit in one small byte while the story is 20 odd chapters long, covering a few years in time. Also, the chemistry between the MC and ML is not much at all, and it drops to the bottom when the MC finds out the identity of the ML. So what starts out as a cute love story with a mild humorous side to it abruptly ends up leaving a terrible... more>> taste.

Although it is a terrible tragedy, there is no scope for redemption, which I think is a flaw when it comes to storytelling. It leaves the feeling that there's something left unsaid. There has to be at least a glimmer of hope left in the end, even if a rainbows and sunshine type of happy ending is impossible.
Spoiler

The MC basically spends his days is a melancholic daze that is impossible to shake. The story starts out like that, it ends like that. What happens in the middle is he loses one after the other whatever little things, freedom and people he has thanks to a certain person falling in love with him. So when he returns to that silent melancholic daze, it is even worse than when we began. This is the nature of the tragedy. One can't help but want to go into the story to shake that man to come out of it. He is just too pitiful...

I might only be on chapter four and I may be stopping here because I started reading without realizing the tragedy tag was there but just these 4 chaps were absolutely amazing as you can connect with the characters you feel a smooth dynamic between them all and I'm already crying at chap 4 I can't imagine what would happen if I finished.

A fairly good story. The last several chapters made me bawl and left me with a bitter taste in my mouth, but I didn't feel dissatisfied with the ending. Of course, I wished for a happy ending where everyone is alive, together, and happy, but everyone in this case had done too much to be happy together. I actually think the author did a bang up job of making this realistic; the bad guys aren't always punished, the evil deeds aren't always forgiven/forgotten, and getting your wish doesn't necessarily make... more>> you happy. Yes, it makes you bitter and sad, but a happy ending isn't always good, and a good ending isn't always happy.

From the MC, I'm strongly reminded that you can't go back to the past. Whether it's the him before being blinded, or the him in the cold palace, they're not the person he is at the end of the novel. We can see that clearly in the ending scene:

Spoiler

He's watching the scenes go by on his divan as he once did while the emperor is watching him as he once did, but neither of them can regain that happiness they once had. The emperor now knows his sins can never be forgiven and his love will never be requited, while Mu Yan feels completely alone. I wonder if he ever felt he wouldn't have been happier staying in the palace where he could see Rui Zui, even if he had to tolerate the emperor, though he certainly doesn't regret his decision.
