Giving it 5/5 to pull up the ratings because it deserves it.

This is a short, straightforward story that knows exactly what it wants to be: simple, short, sweet, and charming.

No intricate palace intrigues or drawn out wars. It's just fluff, fluff, more fluff, and a dash of poignant unrequited love. Just a dash.

If you just want to smile and feel silly happy, this is the novel to read.

A heartwarming short story with some light angst and a dash of mystery in between.

Overall well-balanced story, fluffy parts were fluffy, but had just enough plot to keep the reader invested and interested in the characters' outcome.

If you've read other ancient-style stories, how the plot unfolded is pretty common. But still nice read overall.

... more>> I only wish it was easier to get immersed in the writing.

The translation not only has pinyin everywhere but was extremely inconsistent. For example, the translator would translate Fourth Prince, but not translate "fourth brother." Both forms of address also referred to the same person as well... why?

Not only that, Second Prince was completely pinyin, which gives the false impression that the Second Prince is different or unrelated somehow, when the author literally addressed them all the same way.

Spoiler

Furthermore, the translator would sometimes say "Ninth Prince" but then alternatively use pinyin to refer to Ninth Prince. Pinyin is not Chinese, it's a guide on pronunciation of Chinese characters. And is especially confusing without the intonation marks.

For people who know Chinese, this becomes even more confusing because in MOST texts, jiu is uncle, not "nine." They have the same pinyin, but because the translation was so inconsistent and flipflopped so many times, half the time my initial impression were that they were saying "little uncle, " not "little nine."

If a form of address that has the exact same character and exact same meaning but are treated completely differently by the translator, it gives the reader the impression that they are not the same people. Which is wrong because they are the same, as intended by the author.

A ton of common ancient phrases were also left in their original pinyin, despite having very commonly accepted translations (like "your highness" and "gentleman"). Some common NON-ancient phrases were also kept pinyin, like "dumplings" and "grandpa."

I almost thought jiaozi was "carriage" for a hot minute... ("dumpling" and "carriage" have the same pinyin when you don't put intonation marks) lol.

At this point, it would be better to put the original Chinese characters in the text, literally would have the same result as footnoting all that pinyin to non-native readers, but at least there's the benefit of readers who know Chinese not getting confused.

[collapse]

Otherwise, translation was very thorough... I did appreciate some of the onomatopoeia (like ze -> "tsk") getting translated properly. <<less

Honest rate: 4.7 so it's ok to put 5 stars lol

Ok let's take it seriously.

Is this fluffy? Not quite.

If we're just gonna focus on how cute our little prince was then yeah you can say that, but to find out that there's something hidden behind those cuteness you really can't say this story is fluffy. It's a bit dangerous actually, although it's not unusual since well, that's how it usually was between the heirs and the throne, still you would feel sorry for our little prince. He's not s*upid, he... more>> knows whats happening and he knew how dangerous his situation was, that's why I'm glad that he's still clear headed despite of being too inlove with his Yan Daren.

When it comes to our Yan Daren, I'm just glad that he become straightforward when he's finally clear about how he felt towards the emperor and what he really feel towards his (future) wife. And from that moment on, he did everything just to get him back and our little prince was lucky with that.

Over all, this is a light read, which is good to spend your time with during the weekend. <<less

omg such an amazing story!!! Why haven't I read it till now.

It was such an beautifully written story, ahhh, I fell for it.

I love love the MC, he was so smart, cute and awesome👏. And ML as well, such a cold and yet loving, caring person.

... more>> Reading this novel made me feel such different ranges of emotion from happiness to sadness, to despair and agin ecstasy.

While reading a emotional scene, I don't know why but tend to imagine the worst case scenarios in my head and that makes me cry so muchh.

This novel is really so niceee, it should be highly recommend one. And the smutty scenes they were few but enough to satisfy my heart.

I love this story alot and it didn't even take me long to complete reading just 25 chapters.

I would highly recommend this story to every single person who's seeking a good bl story.

It's really a beautiful story.

Thank you author and translators, I am really grateful for ur hard work

And guys do recommend me a similar one like this story, I'll pray to god so that he'll bless u🤲 😂😂 <<less

I thought this was a light hearted pursuing the ML ancient novel with a bit of smut BUT!! It has conspiracies!!

I really pity the naivety of MC. I feel bad since he was laughing before but now he was crying. I really Hate his brother who proclaimed himself as emperor

The ML really fell in love with MC
Spoiler

I thought it was the ML who betrayed the MC

Spoilerly review below: Our MC from a very young age knew exactly who his favorite person in the entire world was. As he grew older those feelings eventually morphed into love.

The ML knew from a young age he had inappropriate feelings for his best friend and liege. Trying to outrun and hide those feelings was painful. The only comfort he received was from the younger brother of his best friend. The solace he unintentionally found in the boy’s presence was pure. Through the years as his first love disappoints that... more>> original feeling turns to ash allowing something new to grow.

Time, political intrigue and our MC’s persistent unwillingness to separate from his love leads to a happy ending for all. If you don't have a smile on your face by the end, you weren’t paying attention. :) <<less

3.5-4 stars - It's a nice little story, some angst and smut towards the end, otherwise just pretty sweet. Nothing really special or memorable, but good if you want a short, cute romance.

I absolutely loved reading this novel. It is very well written and very well translated.

I found that there was nothing unnecessary in this novel, I can’t really find a single thing to criticise. It is very easy to read, you will never get bored.

It may not be an epic story plot wise but nevertheless it manages to make the reader fully comprehend what the author is trying to convey.

Fluff, just fluff.

For a novel tagged as smut, the smut was just the bonus for me, cause the plot and the story was written really well.

i didn’t just eat this up I gobbled it so fast I now have a stomach ache from all the sweetness

xiao jiu gave me exactly what it was supposed to give: copious amounts of silly fluff, a smidge of angst, a dash of spice, and the smallest amount of political intrigue. This was such a perfect palette cleanser, with it only being 25 chapters it never dragged or felt too heavy, so if you just finished a heavier novel or want to read a danmei that is short enough you... more>> can read it in a single afternoon without using too much brainpower, please read xiao jiu!!!

Such a cute and wholesome story! I feel so empty after finishing it. MC and ML were so devoted, despite the misunderstandings. Lol some misunderstandings were so awkward, but I'm glad they talked it out. The TL was very smooth and amazing, kudos to the TL.

To wrap it up, I'll just say this novel is all cuteness of a pure BL couple sailing in a concise range of a few chapters. At first, with the comedic and silly tone, I thought the story was just about the CP's fluff and... more>> love, but there was tragedy... It came out at a natural pace, but to me, it was unexpected. Xiao Jiu really suffered a lot, even Yan-daren, but I'm so happy that the author wrapped up their endurance with a blissful ending.

Great story; worth reading and even more worthwhile re-reading! <<less

Me and my house are Xiao Kiu stans!

I admit this was a blind read. It feels like a fluffy and shallow story at first, but the author covers all the bases WITHOUT turning it into angst. However, I cried both out of sympathy for the MC and ML and out of sheer fangirling.

Too sweet and well writed. The level of control to not lose the tone of the story? Amazing!

Ahhhh! So cute! MC, Xiao Jiu, is adorable. I love how he is child-like and innocent even through his difficult times. ML, Yan Heng, is worthy of MC's love. Honorable, self sacrificing, and kind... one of my favorite types of MLs.

Spoiler

MC has been cherished since he was young. He was the favorite of his father, the old emperor. ML is the bodyguard of MC's older brother, the crown prince. ML is about ten years older than MC and even carried him as a baby.

MC loved ML first. While ML was away at war, MC's father died and there was a controversy since there was an imperial edict declaring MC as the new emperor. Although MC didn't want the throne and his brother the crown prince still became emperor, his brother still wanted to kill him. ML discovered this situation and tried to protect MC. In the end they had their happy ending.

Of note, I hope the new emperor lived in regret. I think he did love ML in his own way because he noticed that ML was no longer carrying the jade that he gifted ML.

Xiao Ju is short (just 26 chapters) and light-kingdom-danmei. Most of the time is sweet because of the MC. ML is a little stubborn but can fight for his love. There is one plot that made me cry out loud from my guard down. All over is a good sweet danmei.

nb: Xiao Jiu can be a light reading on the sidelines of your painful, angst and mentally breaking heavy reading. ;P
