Chu Ge fought in secret realms for 300 years, securing countless cultivation resources for the sect.

When he returned, wounded and exhausted, he expected to be welcomed as a hero. Instead, his master and senior sister cast him aside in disgust.

For the sake of a newly admitted junior disciple, they shamelessly tried to seize Chu Ge’s life-bound flying sword.

Fortunately, Chu Ge was reborn with memories of his past life and saw through their despicable schemes in advance.

Enraged, he severed ties with the sect and joined the demonic path.

On the path of cultivation, he strode forward fearlessly, covering the heavens with a single hand and ruling over eternity.

Just as he climbed to the peak, his master suffered divine retribution, struck down by lightning, while his senior sister drowned in regret.

Now, they wept and begged him to return to the sect, pleading for his forgiveness.

Chu Ge chuckled coldly at their desperation.

“If regret could change the past…”

Starts out like a typical "reborn after being unfairly maligned and used by ungrateful sect sisters and master to raise the new parasite junior brother" story. Of course there's a setup of a half-dozen or so senior and junior sisters that are directly successful due to his efforts but remember absolutely nothing about it as they're trying to bleed him dry.

The new junior brother, Ye Chen, has a favorability system, he can redeem things for points and in some fashion manipulate people. Ye Chen plays the green tea with the... more>> master and sisters to build favorability, undermine Chu Ge and steal his luck and opportunities. It's not clearly defined exactly how much Ye Chen can manipulate people, but at least some of them show signs of acting like they do solely because they're ungrateful tr*sh. The system is briefly introduced in the four-chapter prologue, where Chu Ge argues and then discards everything to escape the sect trap. Ironically, the villain is more interested in exploiting Chu Ge than hurting him, while the sisters and master are vicious.

What sets this apart from other abandon the parasites and get revenge novels is that after the main character, Chu Ge, leaves the "righteous" sect, he immediately starts looking to join a demonic/evil sect. The common trope is that "evil" sects aren't really evil - just more savage and risky. That's here, but Chu Ge isn't here to make friends. He has some ability that can only be learned from zero cultivation that pairs well with the evil sect traditions of corpse refining.

At the evil sect, he starts on a path of blood and vengeance, killing the dumb, hateful, and regretful alike of his former sect members to use them as materials. Normally I'd consider spoiling this, but there aren't any surprises here. It's just a question of whether you'd expect the characters to truly be that dumb and selfish, and whether you were expecting the specific punishment that awaits.

It's a novel that's unabashed in its cruelty. Random characters introduced with a simple bully history only to be killed off. Of course, Chu Ge deserves his vengeance even if it's based on his past life before regression. It's a bit too "kill the culprits for future crimes" for my taste. I think the true draw to this genre of novel is the regret of unfairly wronging the protagonist rather than the ten-fold revenge.

Spoiler

Choosing to refine the two sisters who came to retrieve him - one out of duty, and the other out of belated concern - into living corpses with forever imprisoned souls that have to watch while he uses their corpses to carve a bloody path through his old sect is a lot of unnecessary escalation for what are probably the two most sympathetic regret heroines to date.

[collapse]

Seeing this type of path this early in the novel, it's clearly an author who knows his target demographic is unmitigated bloodthirst with the pretext of grievance. It's not that regret spam novels are particularly deep in the first place, but this type is even more preposterous at solely using the story to justify the slaughter. <<less
