In the end

Xiao Rong traveled back in time and became the advisor to a warlord during an era of contending heroes.

This warlord was stubborn, refused advice, was overly sensitive and suspicious, prioritized military affairs over civil ones, and most importantly, was brutal and bloodthirsty. Xiao Rong had to assist him because his life was bound to the warlord’s by a system that detected their matching energy fields. Xiao Rong’s well-being depended on the warlord’s fortune—when the warlord’s luck declined, Xiao Rong would cough up blood and need medication.

Thus, the palace became a scene of vivid spectacles:

When the warlord wanted to execute a righteous minister, Xiao Rong clutched his chest to stop him: “Your Majesty, you must not!”

When the warlord wanted to release a pleading enemy, Xiao Rong, pale-faced, intervened: “Your Majesty, you must not!”

When the warlord wanted to massacre surrendered captives and innocent families, Xiao Rong, spitting blood, grabbed his sleeve: “Your Majesty, you must not!”

Eventually, the warlord became psychologically scarred by Xiao Rong’s blood-spitting episodes and started listening to him in everything, fearing that any displeasure would cause Xiao Rong to die.

The obedient warlord turned into a wise ruler, and the empire was within reach. Xiao Rong stood satisfied on the city tower, overlooking the vast lands.

At that moment, a hand reached for his waist.

Xiao Rong: “Your Majesty, you must not!!!”

Look at how many exclamation marks I used, you idiot!

However, the warlord examined his face and concluded: “No blood, so it’s okay.”

Xiao Rong: “…”

Xiao Jing Ya

Status: Completed
It's 4.5/5 for me but I put 5 to boost bc it's worth it.

This is a throne struggle type of story, and I really enjoy it.

You see, I like 'flawed' protagonists, and this novel has both of them flawed. But the author did it beautifully that their flaws actually embellished their characters.

MC, Xiao Rong, is very prideful, petty and has a poisonous mouth, but is actually a kind and good leader who does the best for the people. He's greedy for money (bc he had no money when he first... more>> dragged his sick body to chase after ML all over the central plains), was prejudiced (bc he only read the history books, which was certainly written by the winner), and irritable (who won't be irritable when you suddenly got tied to a hopeless tyrant and told to make him the emperor and would die if you fail?). But he's not a narcissist. If you read more, he's actually quite humble. And he doesn't like to take credits.

But I have to say that another reviewer's comment isn't true. Xiao Rong was indeed prejudiced, but he's only prejudiced towards people with clear marks in history (bc history is written by the winner and there's a lot of missing backstory there). He is NOT looking down on regular people in historical times. On the contrary, he REALLY understands them and their way of life, and he lives with them with ease. He doesn't have any protests against the living condition or intelligence either. He even respects other scholars and talents for their skills that he doesn't possess.

He mainly ONLY looked down on the ML, Qu Yunmie, which is pretty understandable because Qu Yunmie really was reckless and brainless sometimes, so much so that he really did 'play good cards into a waste', as Xiao Rong said. In the first place, the reason why Xiao Rong was sent to Qu Yunmie was bc Qu Yunmie was the man who was supposed to be the winner, but he died like a dog bc he did everything wrong.

So no. Xiao Rong isn't looking down on people nor is he a narcissist.

Anyways. ML, Qu Yunmie, is a ruthless, bloodthirsty, suspicious and reckless war general. And by ruthless and bloodthirsty I mean RUTHLESS and BLOODTHIRSTY. As in massacring an entire city when he's really angered. He genuinely likes killing people and views people's lives as ants. But he's very loyal to his people and actually rather innocent, as he was barely 14 when he was forced to be a general of a great army in the midst of a war.

But here's the best thing: both of them influenced each other and gradually mend each other's flaws. In my opinion, love stories are the best when it's two flawed people getting perfect together, rather than two already perfect people getting together without flaws.

Xiao Rong was very prideful at first, he only did everything according to his plans for 'the greater good' and cannot tolerate Qu Yunmie spoiling it, but gradually, he began to see that these people were different than the ones written in paper, and he gradually saw who Qu Yunmie really was and how he changed for the better. Qu Yunmie also melted Xiao Rong's heart bit by bit, and eventually made him realize that he already had a place here.

Yeah btw I'd like to address that Xiao Rong's main issue is that he doesn't see himself as a part of this world/timeline. He did his best to change the country for the better, but it's evident in his narrations that he didn't see himself in the future of this country. That's why he's so detached and indifferent towards others, and subconsciously closed his heart against the people here, and one of the main reason why he didn't reciprocate Yunmie's love right away despite the clear indication that he shared the feelings. You know the bystander syndrome of transmigrated characters who thinks they 'don't belong here'? Like that.

Qu Yunmie also changed gradually, from a ruthless prejudiced vengeful person who would behead a scholar for speaking up against him, into an actual monarch who did good for his people. He listens to Xiao Rong very well, and gradually realized how good it was to have goodwills from his subjects.

They both grew up as a minister and a monarch side by side, and it's rewarding to see how their Zhenbei army integrated, being accepted, and eventually admired by their people. And that's only the platonic side!

The romantic side is even more rewarding. It's a slowburn for sure but damn it burns real good when ignited! From watching how Qu Yunmie despised Xiao Rong (who possessed all 6 characteristics Qu Yunmie hated lol), to how Qu Yunmie genuinely cried when they reunited after Xiao Rong's supposed death, was so... I don't know what to say. IN SHORT, IT'S SO DAMN GOOD!

Qu Yunmie fell first and HARD, and he's surprisingly so cute and innocent that it's endearing. Including using the drunk trick to steal cuddle times, sharpening Xiao Rong's sword (which earned Xiao Rong's anger bc it wasn't supposed to be sharpened as it was a prop sword for dancing lol), and following Xiao Rong secretly while sleeping on trees when he traveled 🤣 He's also very straightforward, wanting to marry as soon as he confessed (bc he is surprisingly very pure and only want to go all the way after marriage lmao), and his jealousy is also rather childish. But he feels everything deeply, and you can tell the weight Xiao Rong had in his heart by his actions.

Xiao Rong too, he fell slowly, but no less harder. It's because he's 'indifferent' towards relationships and personal feelings that the narration from Xiao Rong's pov didn't show his feelings explicitly. You just know how he gradually cared for Qu Yunmie (and everyone else too) genuinely. How he gradually went from being forced to be tied with Qu Yunmie's fate to really wanting Qu Yunmie to be a good monarch and live a good life. He's a man who hides behind his strong mask and calm face, but his care for Qu Yunmie is very obvious underneath.
Spoiler

Man, the part where he was dying and the narration said that typically people would call for the god they believed in at that time, but Xiao Rong only called 'Qu Yunmie' repeatedly, is really... 😭🤌

[collapse]

The way they get along is also very enjoyable to read. Their bickering is like old married couple hahah 🤣 with Qu Yunmie basically drooping his dog ears in guilt whenever Xiao Rong was angry, and Xiao Rong repeatedly indulging Qu Yunmie and showing his hidden side only to him.
Spoiler

Especially after they confessed to each other and wanted to marry 🤣 the court was wondering whether they would have a good emperor (Qu Yunmie) with an evil queen who seduced the emperor and bring the new dynasty down with his poisonous beauty (Xiao Rong), or that the good emperor was actually Xiao Rong (bc he's the one who's good at governing) and Qu Yunmie was the evil queen (bc he's the one doing whatever he wanted). But in the end they have to accept the possibility that it's actually two evil queens 🤣🤣🤣🤣

[collapse]

JUST READ AH, THEY'RE SO GOOD 😭

And also! The great thing about this novel is that every other characters have their layered depth and unique temperaments. They're not merely there as background props, but real, living and breathing people with their own problems and thoughts. And I like this author very much for not afraid of making their characters 'flawed'.

For example, Song Shuo, the scholar and Xiao Rong's best friend, who was written in history as a gentle and virtuous elder loved and admired for generations, was actually a sharp-mouthed, narcissistic, insensitive chatterbox who doesn't care about anyone's face, and could be so idiotic at times lol. He actually ended up a kind and gentle elder in the original history because he had to pretend, and that pretense had become real with time. Only in this life he truly let go with no worries, because he knows Xiao Rong is there for him, and their people would accept him for who he truly was.

And then Mi Jing, the buddhist monk who's literally treated like a living bodhisattva, kind, virtuous, and wants the good for the people. But because wants the good for the people, it's inevitable that he must step back into the secular world, dabble in politics, and use people who should be used and do what he should do regardless of personal feelings. So that Qu Yunmie accused him for not caring about Xiao Rong, because the people are more important for Mi Jing than one Xiao Rong. Mi Jing would also step back or assist Qu Yunmie and Xiao Rong's relationship accordingly, because their good relationship means better life for the people. He's a really good monk, but from some perspective he could be said to be a bit cold.

And then the little puppet emperor He Fu, who's still 8 yo and underestimated by everyone, including Xiao Rong, but actually very cunning and selfish that he betrayed his country to seek refuge with his enemies. His actions are very understandable, as he was just a terrified child, but it's also chilling how he could throw away his dynasty just to life.

There's also Gongsun Yuan, a general of Qu Yunmie's Zhenbei army, who had rebelled in the original history, but chose to immediately declare his loyalty in this timeline and abandoning his longtime-friend-turned-rebel to avoid getting implicated by the rebellion. In the original history, he rebelled because Qu Yunmie was a hopeless leader, and in this timeline, he stayed because Qu Yunmie has a better chance to succeed. It sounds cold and opportunistic, but it's actually understandable, because Gongsun Yuan is a married man with a harmonious large family, and he had to do anything to ensure his family was safe.

Etc. Theres SO MANY wonderful characters here with interesting depths and various backgrounds. Like Xiao Rong's demented grandmother (who was actually one of the only two people who knows that Xiao Rong isn't actually their family's child), or Qu Yunmie's aunt, who's a tribal queen etc.

The politic is not as complicated, because it's rather straightforward as they're challenging a falling dynasty to establish a new one rather than competing for a throne from inside the court.

Their ragtag family is also very wholesome and down-to-earth. They're also very harmonious despite all the differing personalities and standpoints. Remember that this era was when Daoism and Buddhism had not been intertwined yet, and there were even contrasting religious people such as Mi Jing as the most respected buddhist monk and prime minister Gao as a fanatic Daoism believer, but they could respectfully live in harmony in one big family. It's clear that Xiao Rong is the glue that held them together and make them strong.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE an author who doesn't shy away from flawed characters. A character doesn't have to be 'morally perfect' to be a good protagonist. People from 'the good side' doesn't have to be likable or flawless. But they just have to be good for their people.

All in all, a very good historical novel. One that truly feels like a story with real people with real flaws. Good romance also. I don't find it boring even though it's slowburn with so many chapters. My only regret is that there's not enough chapters after they're established 🤣 <<less

If you want to read this novel first of all ask yourself if you cherish your life, if you do don't bother reading this bs. Why? Because I almost had a heartattack watching the s*upidity of the protagonist. Before I thought he was funny but omfg...... especially the way he treats the ML Like I get it, NO relationship can be so simple BUT these people quarrel day and night if I didn't know better I would think this was some dog blood satirical novel. Also the way he never... more>> says he likes the ML until the end but always plays with his feelings is so.... like you know this has attachment issues and is very suspicious of others despite that you treat his feelings like a game say you love him now but then say you'll beg God so that you aren't together in the next life times. Like??? And the ML literally felt like his heart is being ripped open whenever he acts like this but he just DOESNT CARE. like ok you want him to feel bad for you but why? If you love him why are abusing him mentally?? No matter how I look at it this relationship is crazy Toxic. He even admits it himself (mc) says he's narcissistic, selfish, and a bad person. But this guy acts so f*king self righteous he acts like the savior for the ML says he doesn't want to owe anybody anything and claims the ML owes him nothing, but is that what he really thinks? No in his mind he always subconsciously thinks the ML is ruining his life because he's tied to the ML who died in the official timelines (MC transmigrated from the future). At this point I hope the ML finds a beautiful lover and spits in the MC face. F*ck I haven't hated a character in so long honestly somebody should beat the drums for this author.... <<less

The thing that stands out to me most is MC and MLs chemistry, one completes the other, even if they dont know it yet.

MC is sickly but not incompetent, all he needs help with is physical movement but he also uses it to his advantage along with his knowledge of strategy and history. (and general shamelessness)

ML is ruthless but not dumb, he understands the hidden truth behind words and acts on them in a... lethal way... but hes not an ML that kills just to kill, despite his short... more>> temper.

There is just the right amount of worldbuilding and political intrigue for it to still be memorable and interesting without feeling like too much or too little.

Side characters are also well written, despite only having 9 chapters currently, they already have concrete personalities and traits and are, honestly, as endearing as the MC and ML are.

Overall, I would definitely recommend giving this a go! <<less

This novel is really good.

MC has a sharp mouth but a tofu heart.

ML is a wounded king wolf that becomes a husky

Classic trope. But still my cup of tea.

Im glad that MC stayed true to his character til the end. Both ML and MC are flawed characters, but their imperfections are what made me like this couple. 😍

Everyone is lacking. And what this novel lacks the most is--everything.

The protagonist himself single handily made this novel almost unbearable. At a surface level I did find him funny like his narcasstic, selfish, arrogant personality was whatever right and it was mostly played for comedy. That was fine until it gets to the romance. Because when your in a relationship or ambiguous whatever your characteristics will become more obvious.

Especially the way he ab*ses ML like at one point he gets angry that ML asks him to drink so that they... more>> can have s%% but he gets angry that ML won't just do it. Like on one hand u say ancient people are s*upid on the other you make fun of him for being a gentleman? Why don't you just go dIe omfg. <<less

It was really good in the beginning MC has way with his words and he can talk his way out of anything.

ML has no brain though only thing in his mind ' is Kill Kill Kill' Stubborn and annoying in the 2nd half.

MC has history as his advantage and system danger detecting, he know what to do with each steps. He saves people who should be saved and changed the tragic ending of the original timeline.

But the 2nd half I really can't get into the novel. It was just back... more>> and forth between MC and Ml, it was so meaningless and s*upid. The misunderstanding and terrible conversation that is not productive was so annoying because it last like for 70 chapters, the plot wasn't relevant it seems and went off hill. MC pulling ML's feelings and then they keeping it surface level, I feel it annoying and I really don't care about it in general.

Great first half, terrible second half. I still enjoyed it, they way they explore each characters past and their decisions. Character interactions is really interesting. <<less

MC thinks he's above everyone else. That's it. He respects no one and toys with the whole realm with all the people in it like it's a friggin board game. Now, some might say my understanding is shallow and that all of his policies are geared toward benefitting the common folk, but honestly while his intention is in the right place, his attitude just made it feel like he was calculatedly raising lifestock for himself. Is that anyway to treat human fates under his command? Felt pretty callous to me,... more>> but well I understand it's strictly subjective so whatever.

Romance tag in this story is purely for decoration. He treats the ML like a s*upid, flea-ridden mutt only good for fighting and killing. With their chemistry it would've been better for them to just remain as friends. Maybe get wives of their own and have children with them. Would've qualitatively transformed this novel imo. If you're into OP transmigrators doing whatever the hell they feel like with next to no empathy to the world (and the people) they find themselves in then recommend it to you. As for me I'm not into this stuff. Gonna mark it up as a reminder for myself and move on. <<less

Ok! So I read the entire novel and I will say Xiao Rong is one of the best protagonists out there in terms of being relatable, realistic and in general super interesting!! Don't judge him too soon before reading the entire novel because ohhh boyyy!! Reading his journey is so worth it and not only his character development but Qu Yanmei also has such amazing character flaws and development that I rarely see in Danmei MLs, but I think the most amazing thing about the entire novel was that they... more>> each acknowledged their flaws and this innate nature, they also accepted that changing some things is really hard so all they can do is have themselves or others fill in for their flaws because they are not alone!! This is such an important aspect of the story that genuinely made me cry!! Having flaws is not bad! Having prejudice or fear is not wrong what's wrong is not acknowledging them and not trying to be a better version of yourself and our MC and ML as humans struggle with this changes a lot and intentional or unintentionally hurt each other but I think that's what forms their genuine relationship that they hurt each other, they realise their mistake and try to make amends and sometimes the situation or their feelings are not in favour but still they try hard to come up answers, the process is painful but we can their feelings for each other and that's what makes the novel even more amazing!!!
Spoiler

I also genuinely think MC's fear of not being able to answer ML feelings is real, because for one ML is going to be the emperor and we can't know how people can change once they get that power, secondly MC was put in this situation against his will which not only displaced him into ancient era with no financial or life security, he was also robbed of his identity and freedom. MC also shows a lot of PTSD symptoms after experiencing so many near-death events, so I think it's completely understandable for him to take some time off from everyone and everything to figure out who he is and find inner peace for the challenges he is going to face! Don't forget that now he is not only going to be minister but also empress, which is a whole different level of responsibility. So his hysteria is valid, and I don't think he is overreacting

[collapse]

Spoiler

After rereading this novel, I have a much better understanding of Xiao Rong's character. I think the author really portrays his struggle with having control and his power dynamic with ML in such a powerful yet nuanced way that it can be overlooked sometimes. From the start, we are given titbits of Xiao Rong's life, and we come to know that his parents are divorced but still maintain a good relationship with each other and Xiao Rong. Just that they are not too involved in his life or he is in theirs, this is the same with his extended family, they have an amicable relationship and provide him with ample financial security. This sets a tone that Xiao Rong is secure financially and is also provided with the freedom to do what he wants in life without being burdened by family expectations or disagreement. The same can be said for his social circle; he has amicable relations with his peers, and his supposed lack of close friendships may be attributed to losing his best friend early in his life. Overall, we can say he has absolute freedom and control over his life, but this freedom and control are taken away the moment he is transmigrated and tied to a single person. Now he is constantly haunted by his impending doom, his vitality and health are held hostage daily in the name of fulfilling his mission. Any person in this situation will grow resentful towards that person, in this case, the ML, even though he is not to blame. In the beginning, we even see Xiao Rong not doing anything particular after he transmigrates for 1 or 2 years? This can be seen as him trying to regain that control but failing to do so, and being forced to take action. From the beginning, Xiao Rong has lost control and freedom that he had his entire life and is set to be doomed by the narrative at play. So when he is finally free, we see him being listless and only thinking of going far from ML and regaining his freedom. At that point, I think he not only wants to regain that control over his life but also to see if he will choose ML and stay by his side if he regains that control. The final argument before he leaves is heartbreaking, but I think is the most beautiful scene that captures their dynamics as a whole. Xiao Rong and Qu Yunmei are similar in many of their habits and temperament, which gives them their common ground to understand each other, but they are also understandably different in their ideologies. Qu Yunmei can not understand Xiao Rong's point of view at the end, so he in return argues his point, but what makes Qu Yunmei take a step back is when he sees the heartbreak, sadness and helplessness in Xiao Rong, he may not understand Xiao Rong's thoughts, but he does understand his feelings, and this allows Qu Yunmei to let Xiao Rong go and also gives Xiao Rong an oppertunity to regain the control of his life that he lost. I think this is exactly the reason Xiao Rong comes back to Qu Yunmei and decides to stay by his side. Throughout the story, we see Xiao Rong's struggle with control, but what we may miss is that Qu Yunmei is subtly yet slowly trying to give back the control Xiao Rong has lost to him; this is very much done unintentionally on Qu Yunmei's part, but he makes Xiao Rong his equally in all ways possible. This is what makes their relationship so flawed, but beautifully, they may have arguments on their ideas in the future as well, but as long as they empathise and understand each other's feelings, they are meant to be together.

The interactions of the leads are fun and its quite engaging! Tho I do wonder why someone that knows so much history majored in dancing instead, feels like wasted talent, maybe history was a hobby, it doesnt have to be your main pursuit for you to be so good at it (i know living examples). Its not impossible but I wonder if his actual career will come into play...?

Note : Only read 10 chapters

I like the plot but I can't stand the main character. I know author purposely write him like that but reading in his pov just make me uncomfortable. He's like most transmigrated MCs, look down on ancient peoples and kind of narcissist (based on the 1st and 2nd chapter). I don't mind character with flaws but the way author wrote the MC's personality just not for me. I feel uncomfortable and can't continue reading this.

Also the basic chinese MC trope - the MC describe as... more>> having really beautiful face and really smart unlike others (this MC read historic books, knows a lot but majoring in dancing).

Maybe more chapters translated, I will try to read again. Hope others that read complete novel would give much better review than me. <<less
