The traitorous general Gu Mang was returning to his homeland. Everyone wanted to see him dead, and it was said that the one who hated him most was his former best friend—the cold and ascetic Young Master Mo.

The rumours said: Young Master Mo prepared three hundred and sixty-five methods of torture to interrogate him with, just waiting to try them out on Gu Mang. They were so varied it was more than enough to toy with him for a year without repetition.

Except these rumours were very quickly forbidden by Young Master Mo. The reason given was that they described him as a lunatic, and were severely inconsistent with reality.

So what was the truth?

The truth was even more unspeakable—

Mo Xi’s identity: the most abstinent commander of the empire.

His relationship with the traitor Gu Mang: they’d slept together before.

Jesus lord that was intense. I almost cried in the first 7 chapters. Really good solid storyline. The characters all have substance, with their own struggles and motivations for their action, and it seems there are a lot of secrets waiting to be unfolded. Despite the focus being only on MC and ML so far. This novel is full of angst and brutality and I can´t wait for further chapters.

Seriously can´t recommend this novel enough. Everyone should give it a try.

What can I say? I'm not a fan of this show-don't-tell format in books. We must have made a trip to the past a minimum of 6 times, and that's on top of just constantly talking about the past. Overall it was frustrating. And then always with the surprises. Like ... more>>
Spoiler

It was just one plot twist after another. I won't provide any links, but look up "When the hero is just as smart as the villain" by CalebCity on youtube and you'll get a good sense of what this book is. I thought of that video immediately.

It feels like everything had to be complicated and "unexpected" (quotes because I think Meatbun is underestimating the reader's intelligence).

HE? I guess? That last chapter at the end was so... blah. Personally
Spoiler

I hate BE's but after almost 200 chapters of this chaotic mess, I would still endorse both dying at the end! Maybe I would feel more sympathy for them living if there was an extra chapter IN THE MAIN STORY with them hanging out. But we don't get that here.

This book was never gonna be 5 stars for me with all the flashbacks, but it went down to 3 after I got towards the very end and suddenly, after yet ANOTHER reveal, they dared to suggest
Spoiler

the use of that stone to make like 190 CHAPTERS all for naught. I know it ended up being the case that it couldn't change anything, but in the remaining chapters, it failed to impress me enough to improve my rating of it again.

SO! Sorry for all the spoiler warnings. Anyway, it's a good book. I know it's a good book because I never gave up on it even when it frustrated me. I looked forward to reading it everyday, so that counts for a lot in my mind. Despite its flaws, I still enjoyed it. So while I can't bring myself to give it a higher rating, it's worth checking out. Yes it is HE. Yes you are guaranteed to bawl your eyes out at some points, as is Meatbun's style. Just don't go into this thinking it's gonna make it up there with some of the classics like TGCF or 2ha (Another of Meatbun's works, if you somehow didn't already know). <<less

Ok this is subjective.

Objectively, I think this coulda been a 4, maybe 5?

It was well written, and you can tell it was very well thought out. But for me personally, there were some things I couldn't quite get behind, which is why I gave it a subjective 3.

... more>> This book in many ways, kind of remind me of if you were reading MDZ but from Lan Zhan's perspective, with a much more unintentionally cruel Wei Wuxian. The protag is the Gong in this novel.

In MDZ its stays pretty 'innocent' for most of it, and you just pine for WW and LZ to get together. In this novel however, they're already in love, but the Gu Mang 'betrayed' Mo Xi so you just kind of winder throughout the novel why the Gu Mang betrayed Mo Xi. Its just so exhausting how much hurt Mo Xi goes through, you just want SOME kind of happiness for him, even if that means the love of Gu Mang, who may or may not have betrayed him.

We also dont get to know much about Gu Mang until much later, but there are many parts where he is quite cruel to Mo Xi in order to "protect" him. All of this, and its just.. Not very romantic and not enjoyable to read about.

The intrigue is alright, but there are SO many flashbacks, it did get a little frustrating ro read, and at some points I just started HEAVILY skimming to just get on with the plot. <<less

As with 2ha, I wanted to like this but like 2ha, I had similar issues with it. I really liked the first half, but the second half left me frustrated.

So this novel is pretty similar to 2ha structurally: angst and relationship development in the first half, plot and mystery-unraveling in the second. I really liked the personalities of the two main leads, and the angst was really good. Mo Xi's years of devotion and loyalty, constantly putting his heart out there despite being betrayed and hurt was just so sad.... more>> And there's just something so personal and sweet about finding a home in one another. The fluff and lighthearted parts were also so cute! I loved wolfboy!Gu Mang's escapades in Mo Xi's house 😂

However, the pace was quite slow at first, where you don't really learn much. This becomes a problem in the last 20-30 chapters, where all the plot twists are suddenly dumped onto you. The first fifty chapters felt to me like no progress was being made, other than lots and lots of angst. The author also uses a lot of flashbacks in the first half, but it left me feeling quite disconnected from the story.

I thought the novel was going to be about s*avery at first, then it turned out to be about court politics and the ruthlessness of power, then it turned out to be about spies and the hardships they go through... and the whole novel just went like that, constantly changing focus. The last 20-30 chapters were especially frustrating to read, because after about 170 chapters of the characters seeming a certain way with clues that they're sus, they'll be revealed to be on the other side, then revealed again to have another agenda, and then revealed to have hidden something else. Like one reviewer said, it no longer felt believable, but seemed almost comedic. I also felt that the two main characters became kind of poorly written by the end.

Also didn't really like the Chinese imperialism and the othering of enemy states and nations. And s*avery in this novel was more of a plot device than anything else, which is uncomfortable to read at points. Overall, I liked the two main characters, but didn't really like the rest of the novel. <<less

I started off absolutely adoring Yuwu, the premise was amazing, the characters very appealing, and very intriguing plot ahead. Plus its Meatbun, so, of course, it would have fantastic writing, well constructed plot, and lots of knives!

However, I don't know if this was because of reading in MTL, but I felt like the story started going downhill after chapter 140 or so? Like there were so many reveals and plot twists and events that I could barely keep track at one point. Like it was all well planned, but not... more>> so greatly executed? And at one point the knives became too much and felt aimless. It didn't have the same heart-wrenching quality that the initial knives did. The plot is excellent and as per Meatbun style- extremely well planned with like 10 shocking twists. But it did feel a bit rushed and jam-packed.

This may be because I finished the story in MTL though- a lot of nuance may have been lost.

Overall, Yuwu was great, and definitely a wonderful read! I couldn't stop reading this once I started! Gu Mang is my beloved, I love him so much. Mo Xi is well-written character, and you really feel his pain and angst.

Murong Lian....I still didn't like him that much even at the end, but my hate for him significantly decreased so that's something.

Thank you to Meatbun and the translators! <<less

As a fairly seasoned reader, I was expecting knives and tragedy given both Meatbun as a writer, as well as all of the general warnings from other readers. Yet, this novel fully surpassed all of my expectations. It is misery to the highest level. It is constant. It is unending. And unlike the author's prior work, we do not really get anything to let off the pressure. The plot is just too dense to allow readers to breathe, and I did not even make it past the halfway point.

The main... more>> pair could be interesting, if someone would get them into a normal, non-world-ending, non-trauma-inducing situation for five minutes. The point of view was a change of pace though, at least in comparison to other novels. The MC's position being out of the loop felt vaguely compelling, and his genuine hurt made for this being a way more interesting read than it would have been from the ML's point of view, which granted, is also more common for this type of story.

Every bit of this book so far is a slog and I have skimmed to the end to know that finishing it fully will not satisfy. Honestly, I am a little sad about that. Meatbun is a solid writer from a stylistic standpoint, and is doing interesting things with the main characters' points of view. Yet, for all of the cool story beats (tattoo-origins), there were a whole lot of things that negated any actual interest in reading (Unending trauma). If you stop looking forward to a book, you stop reading it.

So I did. <<less

It took me a really long time to finish 2ha (like almost a year), and now, I even had the guts to read Yu Wu.

Yu Wu is really beautiful... but painful. Unlike 2ha that's fluff at this part and next, the tearjerkers, Yu Wu is consistently painful. Have they not suffered enough? 😭

I like this very much. There's so much angst but I still like it. As expected of Meatbun though, he/she doesn't disappoint.

The story is really good. Every character have something to do with the ML and MC. The plot is like a puzzle : each memory are a piece and more you read, the more you see the whole picture. Finally, the emperor is special, the emperor's cousin's seems a good villain, the great master crafter and his nephews belong to a strange family...

You wont feel bored and a special thanks for the quality of the translation !

I love this story so much!!! You should just read it, this won't disappoint you. It's so sad, and the whole time I read this, I had my tissue box by my side the whole entire time. The MC and ML go through so many hardships and misunderstandings until they are finally able to unravel all of it and know each other better. It's too good! I wish there are more translations for meatbun's novels because only 2 so far is not enough for me.

As expected from meatbun, there’s a lot of knives. But it just so good, and the comedic part is superb.

And here I just want to beg the translator to take care of themselves, and please please let me see the 8000 words locked in chapter 106. I dont want to get stabbed by flying daggers only, I want to see the car scene too!!! Here i’m crying reading the original version of yu wu in jjwxc with locked chapters. @_@

OMG, I love it. Reading this story till the end is like going a long travel. Many twist and turn.

At first, I didn't like this story that much because it felt like another version of GDC (the story is totally different, but the feeling? Aura? Seems to be similar). But, later I totally forgot about that and falls for the couple. They are just so out of world. Plus, the story is so interesting and well explained at the end.

Love it. Totally a five stars story for me. I even... more>> want to add the stars if possible. <<less

Dont hesitate. Just read it. I usually don't MTL things.. But this might be the first one where I actually completed it. I m a sucker for proper depth plot lines.. Properly built characters.. That have their own distinction. I love both the MC and ml. Its a very well thought written novel by meatbun (the first novel I read from her) . I kept on trying to see how they would have overturn their fate and destiny. Gu Mang's (uke) cheerfulness is amazing, his positivity, and strength. Moxi's... more>> pure love is ❤️. I would love to see this in a live action. If the choosen actors are good.. It would be wonderful to see all the raw emotions portrayed by Gu Mang and Moxi. Also I would thank the translator for doing such a good job. The way she translated the story with her words..I was sold. I cant even imagine how much brain they must be putting to translate a book in such a way that u don't just feel u re reading some English paragraphs.. Instead can immerse yourself. How nice it would have been if I could have completed the novel in ur words rather than the MTL.. <<less

All I can say is: Never judge a book by it's cover. I normally hate it and think of it as "boring" if 2 characters already interacted with each other like this in the past and knew each other too well. That was my reason for avoiding it a bit longer. But: I made a huge mistake doing so. Big second plus point were real Yaoi scenes (it's not BL pretending to be Yaoi) and my love for enemies to lovers - relationships. The writing is just great, being set... more>> at multiple places but never really leaving the MC much, and brings you over the volumes into pain, pain and pain. I cried so many times, it ripped out my heart almost. If you love emotional damage with a HUGE amount of good plottwist, then this is yours! The story never gets boring, since there are a LOT of secrets behind the scenes and constant danger awaits the reader.

Spoiler

Since there is a huge timeskip between their old lives (which is also just explained bit by bit in every single novel) and the present, and since the characters changed a lot from their previous selves, it wasn't a negative factor at all. In a lot of stories and manga it's more exiting if they don't in my opinion. But here, it I think it didn't make it worse.

I have to say I love the plot and the amount of angst (in my opinion it was exactly enough of angst). The plot is amazingly written and executed. The plot twists are unexpected and the betrayals feel very personal. Most of the times I don't really like the ML that much but I fully adore both Mo Xi and Gu Mang. Most of the time I don't care much for side characters so I was positively shocked when I realized I do like them. For me it was far... more>> better read then 2ha then it comes to the structure of the plot but unfortunately it lacked when it came to rewarding the reader. I feel like I have waited so long for main characters to spend time together happy and it never came. Even in the extra chapters there is not much of showing them now happy. Overall it was a good read even an amazing one but I was a little bit disappointed because I thought it could have become my favorite book. <<less

I dropped it after 50 chapters. All I can say is that this novel is not for me. The MC is just too unbearable. And knowing meatbun, I know she'll have a way of tying all threads together by the end and I would have borne with the frustrating MC if the plot was engaging enough but there's just suffering, suffering and MORE SUFFERING. Even the forwarding of the plot is fully based on more suffering. I'm sorry, I didn't like it.

Overall rating: 3.5/5

Couple (TopxBottom) : Mo Xi x Gu Mang

I absolutely love Gu Mang and would die a thousand times for him to be happy, I'm serious. The amount of times I cried for him is just uncountable. A few people may not like Mo Xi, but there's a LOT to unpackage and it WILL make sense by the end of the novel. The novel itself is a journey that we as the reader embark on with Mo Xi (top/seme protagonist) to uncover the mysteries of why things are as... more>> they are, and why Gu Mang "betrayed" him.

I hate (not literally) this novel as well because I was fooled many times by so many characters, and it's honestly so sad how many of the characters were able to scheme for so long under your nose. As things develop, you'll start feeling so many conflicting feelings for the characters. To note, it is deeply tied to 2ha but is an independent story of its own without needing to read 2ha. However, the family tree and relationship between Yuwu and 2ha is mindblowing (at least to me). The angst was a bit too much honestly, and I've regarded meatbun as a torturer of her bottoms/uke/shous, and haven't picked up her other works. But overall the novel was okay, especially if you're curious of what took place prior to the setting of 2ha, but it is overall a pretty boring novel in a sense. <<less

Yuwu is the best novel I've read so far and maybe always will be. I've never seen something so heartbreaking but I've also never seen love so honest and pure like Mo Xi and Gu Mang.

The whole setting is something very interesting for me. I love cultivation stories and the forbidden love between enemies, especial since one is a noble and one is lowborn, is the perfect setting for a completely heartbreaking story.

It's really easy to get into the novel right from the start. The writing is so good that... more>> it even made me forget about the world around. It felt like living the story myself.

Both of the characters completely stole my heart. They're such incredible heroes written in a believable and so perfect way.

I really recommend this so much but be ready for the angst! <<less
