The traitorous general Gu Mang was returning to his homeland. Everyone wanted to see him dead, and it was said that the one who hated him most was his former best friend—the cold and ascetic Young Master Mo.

The rumours said: Young Master Mo prepared three hundred and sixty-five methods of torture to interrogate him with, just waiting to try them out on Gu Mang. They were so varied it was more than enough to toy with him for a year without repetition.

Except these rumours were very quickly forbidden by Young Master Mo. The reason given was that they described him as a lunatic, and were severely inconsistent with reality.

So what was the truth?

The truth was even more unspeakable—

Mo Xi’s identity: the most abstinent commander of the empire.

His relationship with the traitor Gu Mang: they’d slept together before.

It's not a review because Yuwu is brilliant. Please go and read this wonderful novel to experience constant heartache (we are all masochists, just accept it and revel in the mastery of angst in this novel)

Here goes the snippets of my reading thread:

Yuwu will make your hurt. Six chapters into this story and my heart clenched for Gu Mang because he doesn’t appear initially so he is alive through dialogues and other people’s memories. Especially when you contrast it to the reality of the situation.

but it can also be... more>> peak comedy when Gu Mang comes to stay with Mo Xi... oh the hilarity that ensues. The ascetic cool and calm General Mo has got no chill when it comes to Gu Mang, our wolf pup. Gu Mang the new cat and General Mo the exhausted cat dad

I love my ultra tsundere prickly Mo Xi

I can sympathise with Mo Xi’s emotions... he hero worshipped Gu Mang and rightly so, only to find him so utterly lost

The moment when Gu Mang mistakes the s*ave collar for a necklace and thanks Mo Xi... the undercurrent of emotions in this scene

Past or Present... Gu Mang consoles our sulky Xihe Jun

Gu Mang had given him grace. Cries

The past... their past

The beauty of Yuwu is that you see exactly why the love and hate runs so deep. It’s not some abstract love-at-first-sight passion kind of thing. They were each other’s everything. It was Them against the world. Brothers, friends, comrades and lovers all meshed together to form the deepest of bonds.

My poor baby, he worked so hard to return everything back to his Gu Mang Gege only to reach that point and not have his Ge to give it back to anymore

Teaching him to read🥺

my heart hurts. The ribbon scene in the pool

My heart aches is what I feel most of the time reading this novel.

Mo Xi has all my heart. And So does Gu Mang. I adore these two characters. And for all those who think Mo Xi is a s*um gong or don’t like him need to re-read Yuwu. Mo Xi is one of the most understanding partners I have ever seen. After so much being hidden from him. He gives Gu Mang the freedom to keep some things from him. It shows his respect for Gu Mang.

My poor MoXi😭

I always thought it was Gu Mang who was going to make me cry but it turned out to be Mo Xi.

Oh, my heart is so full😭

I was wrong Gu Mang did make me cry

The first time tears rolled down at a happy ending

The ending was so satisfying. <<less

I am absolutely obsessed with this novel the characters are amazing and the angst is just Chief kiss I did need to take a few breaks while reading it but the gong was surprisingly one of the most greenest ML and MC he is such a sweet mochi and truly a devoted lover and our shou is tooo great for this world ahhh the amount of times I cried they both truly deserve eachother specifically gu wangs mo-shidi ~, the dynamic was kinda like a husky shou and a cat... more>> gong, and the side characters truly had personality I even cried for one so much absolutely did not regret reading it✨🫶🏼 <<less

i can’t believe how underrated this novel is. It is a masterpiece, I didn’t think I would be so emotionally invested when reading it. It has an amazing story line, strong romance and not to mention the humongous amount of ANGST. Both MC and ML touched my soul and I love them sm. It broke my heart multiple times when reading it but it was all worth it at the end. There were also spicy chapters, meatbun never fails to deliver us with some VERY good smut, it was very... more>> enjoyable to read. And of course great happy endings and decent extra chapters.

overall amazing novel, please read it! <<less

One word to describe this novel - Pain, this novel is kinda the one to make you depressed whole day until you finish it. ML is literally just suffering throughout most the of the novel, living in torment both mentally and physically (to the point you might feel the author is brutally torturing and abusing him). MC is no better, but he's mostly suffering mentally. To put it straight, they both suffer in their own ways. Even the cp's happy moments are bitter sweet kind. For people who can't take... more>> extreme angst, I suggest skipping this one, knives in this one is much worse than 2ha. What they had was kind of a forbidden love, social class (this is like the main theme) acting as a barrier amidst of all those scheming happening around. The plot is well done (as expected from meatbun), the twists are amazing, so it's better not to spoil yourself beforehand. The cp is so precious, they love eo so much (I love them sm too T.T). The HE kinda seemed forced, but no big issue and meatbun already mentioned reasons for that in her a/n.

P.S. Sending lots of love to Chuyi and Ah-Lian <3 <<less

This story is good! I love the plot and the side characters but i'll rate this 3 stars because the main characters' rs didn't grown on me and I was expecting more with this novel.

I read this for angst because a lot of people told me this is more angstier than 2ha but after the story, I didn't even shed a tear for them though ... more>>

I shed a tear a bit when murong chuyi died

The angst is from beginning to ending, so for a person who likes angst but doesn't like angst with characters I wasn't familiar at first, I wouldnt cry for them even if the angst here is v delicious.

The main character's relationship didn't grown on me as much as the side character does like chuyi that's why I tried to finish the story for the plot and didn't read the extras. The fluff part was some at the middle and at the backstory and in the ending but those few fluff didn't helped to made their rs grow on me.

I still like the story especially the plot twist!!! Meatbun really did a great job in their stories' twist!!! <<less

So far out of Meatbun's novels, this was the one that actually made me think the most. About motives, about relationships - I was spinning theory and theory after myself wanting to figure out the truth ahead of Mo Xi. The angst was really bad, and honestly, I don't blame Mo Xi.

He still loved Gu Mang, and was disgusted that he did still love him. He loved him, and he could remember the pain GM felt before he left, and understood why he would want to betray the kingdom. At... more>> the same time, he hated him for the deaths and pain he caused; not just to the common people, but to himself as well. And so while he'd do everything in his power to take him under his possession when he returned, he also couldn't bear to treat him too kindly because he felt the souls of the dead watching him with accusing eyes.

At least I can say that out of Meatbun's protagonists, Mo Xi is the one with the most morality and best values. He never forced Gu Mang in any way, even when he thought he was a traitor. And he never forgot how well his shixiong treated him when they were young, and was thankful for it. As for Gu Mang, he takes self-sacrifice to the next level; I love him to bits <3

(P.S: Side characters were addictive and I wanted more of them!) <<less

It's a well written novel. The writer is good at Showing instead of telling, and since we mostly got MC's pov, we are in a journey with him.

This is a masterpiece, highly recommended

It is knife after knife, NON STOP, knives!! MC was hurt because he didn't understand the truth behind ML betrayal. He missed treated and said a lot of hurtful sh*t to ML. But then later you find out what ML went through and sh*t that hurts even more! The smut was good. But so little happy moment. Then ending was too much, just had too many twist and turns, plus the MTL translations sucks. It was hard for me to understand what's going on, but I kind of have an... more>> idea of the overall story. <<less

This book is so goddamn angsty it took me a few months to finish it (also finished few other novels in between haha). Too angsty for my taste (and I've enjoyed 2ha) but it's an overall pretty solid read. Meatbun has a thing with her writing where she just reveals a lot of plot twists at the climax, those plot twists were handled much better here than in 2ha. Her writing has improved, but aiya some parts are just too unnecessarily angsty. The characters are great and complex but their... more>> development was just buried in the angst. Idek what else to say, just too much knives <<less

Beautifully poetic and extremely powerful emotional writing; use of two seemingly unrelated situations to hint at a deeper meaning or warning; shifting dynamics between different characters, in particular the switch between Mo Xi and Gu Mang's control of their very fragile relationship juxtaposes against their past selves, and against the political power play of the court; the jaw dropping plot twists and subtle hint dropping throughout the novel. The entire novel can be used as a study in how to weave emotions together with heavy plot. Revelations are better paced... more>> throughout the novel and overall a more steady and grounded novel than Erha's rollercoaster change of pace. <<less

I think that Yu Wu is very good for what it's worth, but you must be aware of Meatbun's plot execution issues before going into it. It's been a running theme in her novels to struggle at the 2/3rd mark. I feel like every single new reader of hers shouldn't expect too much from the conclusion of her stories.

I went into Yu Wu hoping she would improve after Book 3 of 2Ha was... like that. But she still struggled to draw all of her plot threads to a conclusive ending.... more>> Though I think Yu Wu was definitely a step up, since the story was much shorter and much more concise. (I felt as though 2Ha dragged on for ~30-50 chapters too long)

But if you have simple needs like me (angst & hurt/no comfort), this is definitely it. The characterization, CP writing, character development, etc is all great. I think a majority of the characters are fleshed out, especially Gu Mang, who I feel really shines. He is an extremely fleshed ML and he suffers so much!!! (Mb please let your shous rest) Though I feel like I cannot say the same for Mo Xi. His writing felt very weak to me & I feel like I didn't get a very strong impression from him throughout. This is just my opinion though because I personally know people who think otherwise. It's just odd how he is just... there.. considering how strongly characterized Meatbun's other protagonists are... Chu Wanning, Mo Ran, He Yu, Xie Qingcheng, Gu Mang... yeahhh

I give this one a 4 rather than a 5 because even though ximang's writing and chemistry was very strong, I never felt particularly invested in their relationship enough for it to make up for the story flaws. Meatbun is extremely talented at writing pairings so I never once felt disconnected from the romance, but I never truly resonated with them the way I do other pairings. That's just my personal taste in ships though, it has nothing to do with the novel's writing. Since I didn't really care for ximang I always felt myself more interested in the side characters. (Murong Lian and Murong Chuyi were my favorite parts of Yu Wu not going to lie.)

I will keep recommending Yu Wu, because sadly it's becoming the forgotten middle child of Meatbun as more people flock to Bing an Ben, but hopefully that'll change in the future and more people will experience it!! So yeah!! A strong 4/5 stars. <<less

As expected from Meatbun.

The knives will come like suddenly!

Reading this really gave me a roller-coaster feeling, but honestly, after I finished reading this story, instead of feels empty, I still feel so angry (because of the villain ofc). Like, bruh What the fork just happened-kind of feeling :')

If you love angst. This one is your cup of tea.

The pain was... *chef kiss* :')

Rating: 5/5- Knives! Knives! And more Knives! Wow!

So Meatbun is pretty much my favorite author and for good reason, as she writes the most amazing characters with fantastic world building and the angst is top notch.

Yuwu is nothing like ErHa but that’s what makes it enjoyable! It has its own pits and highlights and it’s leads are absolutely gut-wrenchingly, beautiful! Every character etches themselves into your heart and both their flaws and good points are memorable.

The book has the tone of suffering and despair from the first chapter right up... more>> until the last chapter and you only get to enjoy momentary sweetness in drips and drabs when reading this novel. My heart hurt reading about Gu Mang and at first I truly hated Mo Xi. Except Meatbun once again weaves her magic of making you come to love even the worst of characters (looking at you Murong Lian).

Gu Mang is a difficult character to understand. His ideals know no bounds and sometimes you just want to slap some selfishness into him. By the end of it all, I still learned to accept his character and his choices even though I cried through his experiences.

Mo Xi shows immense character growth from start to finish and his strength and love really develop with every chapter. Although he was always sincere you do end up feeling immensely sorry for him by the end.

I fell in love with our Chu Wanning lookalike Murong Chuyi and many other characters like Jiang Fuli and Yue Chenqing. It’s a wonderfully complex and heart wrenching world created and the journey to victory is filled with all sorts of emotions.

Overall, Yuwu is worth the read and unforgettable. There’s a few Easter eggs for ErHa fans as well although Yuwu is set centuries before ErHa.

Meatbun tops my list of authors! ErHa still tops my list of all time favourites but Yuwu is a 5/5 read and wonderfully memorable and poignant in its own right! <<less

First of all, If you read Meatbun's 2ha work then in comparison Yuwu is painful than 2ha, a unique story of its own out of loads of BL all around these years.

Well written characters, trust me you won't get bored, you'll be wanting for more. The only sad thing about this one is translations are slow, haha. ;P
