Isekai-esque fun times part 3

Novels I have read or am reading. Must have at least one isekai-esque element, such as game like systems, reincarnation, transmigration, progression fantasy as the tags suggest. All novels also including my personal score and review, some spoilers might be included be warned, and some might be outdated by the time you're reading them as I don't keep up with most of them after adding them, just my notes and experiences at the time as an avid fan of the genre.

Mostly Korean and maybe a
few Japanese novels. I will update the list and add novels I like and find
worth reading every time I discover something noteworthy(be it good or bad), might go through periods of silence as I get burnt out of reading or have other things going on in life.

The world is interesting, overall design is reminiscent of the persona game series with arcana's, hidden dungeons that only a certain few people can see and enter enemy types and weaknesses and powers are something you can easily image being a setting for the game series, mixed with a decently written magic academy setting it's great and stands out among the others.

Story structure is good, in every chapter it feels like we accomplish something. Characters grow and are interesting, and have fun personalities as well as powers, and the world feels alive with stuff happening behind the curtain that we explore later and it's not entirely centered around the protagonist being the center of the universe.

The main character is good. He's overpowered but I find the skill system to be in depth and interesting enough to not really matter as much as he never really bulldozes enemies without it feeling deserved or boring. Personality wise he's fine, but can be kind of off-putting as he's compassionate sometimes while being absolutely heartless/ruthless in others and it's hard to see where he crosses the line. But in the end I feel that he does stand out among other 'isekai esque' protagonists and has good lines and moments and makes fun relationships.

Side characters are the standouts and I love the chapters/arcs centered around their troubles and them growing as people. The main cast, at least as far as I got after writing this, are great, but definitely feels like some are sidelined too much as we introduce more and more, wish it was more focused on only the core members.

Villains are kind of the most forgettable part as I don't think they get as much passion put into writing them as the side characters, some are just completely cartoonishly evil or s*upid, some fighting and dying would've easily been stopped if we had a single moment of conversation. It's fine if the author wanted it to be like that, but it gives a strange dissonance as main characters are allowed to grow while others are bullied and never given the proper attention they deserve. Which I think goes against some other themes this novel tries to present but it's not a huge off-putting thing. <<less

Inconsistent shabby writing and very random world building is it's most glaring issue, but if you look past that there are moments of fun and good ideas mixed it, that sometimes aren't executed the best.

What i found most enjoyable were the character interactions, this is one of those rare times where I wish it just had less 'action'. A lot of scenes/arcs full of potential for good and interesting, gradual character building and growth are just too often skipped over in a couple sentences, days, weeks, months. While I found the characters to be some of my favorite aspects, they aren't utilized to their full potential.

When we're finally past the island arc, something that the novel has been building up since the beginning, so much random stuff happens rapidly and randomly. A whole process of the protagonist, finally after 10 years of being stuck on the island and leaving, sailing across the sea for months with his new companions, is just skipped, in like 2 or 3 chapters, the tone shifts from a chill survival/comedy novel to something entirely different in nearly every chapter, it's just so... rushed, like the author was just trying to get you from 1 point to another as fast as possible with as little elaboration as possible, just so many moments like that, that feel so out of place are stuffed in this and it's hard to give it a good score even though there are aspects of it that I liked somewhere in-between. It just unfortunately gets worse the further we get from the main, reasonably unique, island survival setting, becoming just another cliche'd story with a game fantasy academy happening in the background with barely any consistency, repercussions or impact to the main character that unfortunately isn't blended well most likely because of the authors inexperience.

I still think it's worth checking out and maybe someone else will find it more enjoyable than me. It's just that I personally didn't expect it to be as comedy centered as it is, especially when NU doesn't even have that genre/tag added as of me reading/writing this. <<less

Action Adventure Comedy Fantasy Harem Romance Tragedy

At first it starts out like the other hundred misunderstanding comedy novels, near indistinguishable from each other, with a seemingly overpowered but idiotic main character and the ever expanding harem, but the interesting underlying world setting, progression and motivations of the protagonist had me glued to it and I think it payed off, as it gradually shifts, becoming a somewhat horrifying tale of trust, betrayal and obsession that had me perhaps invested too much...

It's definitely flawed and can be jarringly uncomfortable at times, and while the translation is only halfway done as of writing this, I have some hope for what I think it's doing and turning out well in the end. But I do recommend checking it out if you don't mind some of the disturbing aspects of it.

The harem I found the most appalling as there's many common cliche's and some characters were almost impressively lazily written. It focuses way too heavily on the very overused yandere tropes, which just doesn't feel naturally stitched together in this novel at all. I feel that it definitely could have been better implemented, sometimes a girl just falls head over heels for the mc even though he's done absolutely nothing special, nor was the girl in such a bad mental state to instantly feel such strong obsession for a person they barely know, there probably are meta explanations of the original world of the adult game being so every woman is programmed to fall in love with someone instantly or something, but that feels too lazy and nonsensical, especially for the type of story the author is more leaning towards.. It just feels very shoehorned in for some fanservice at times, while it serves for some drama, it works maybe only once out of five cliche moments.

I always find time stopping powers interesting, and sometimes it is here, but MOST of the time it feels way too inconsistent and improperly used, nerfed or buffed only for the plot to progress, which I should've expected for a novel with comedy as one of it's central themes, but It always breaks my heart to see such underwhelming execution of the most broken power of all time. Sometimes even out of pity(plot armor), the story even gives the protagonist more time related powers because his main one is apparently so restrictive, but it feels so unnecessary when they could've just upgraded his current one, as it's shown previously to be possible, it just makes what's already poorly executed, more messy.

I also have some minor complaints about plot holes, parts of the story that are seemingly important being forgotten and almost never being brought up for a long time, but I think this review is already too ranty. I'm mostly pissed because I did enjoy it a lot and want it to excel even more, but ultimately I don't think it's too big of an issue and had a good time reading. <<less
