It's a pretty good read. If you haven't LOTM, you wouldn't be none the wiser. Nonetheless, it is a fan-fiction (of game media), but the fanfic elements are pretty unobtrusive and I forgot it was at some points (the world and system is original). It has pretty good scenes, action, and planning, but a common critique of the novel is that it feigns intelligence for well explained coincidences. This does get a little tiring at points.
